Makars Gourmet Mash Bar (Mound) Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Makars! As a party of 9, they were super accommodating of group as a walk in (but definitely recommend making reservations so you don't have to do this). Everyone enjoyed their entrees - even our picky eaters! I personally had the haggis entree and thought it was delicious. They also have a great selection of beers. Definitely recommend this spot if you're in Edinburgh - just remember to make a reservation ahead of time or go for an early dinner if you're going to walk in!
Great restaurant
Great food, fun place & Kallen was a great waiter. Would highly recommend Makars Gourmet Mash Bar Company. Highly recommend the Wild Boar sausages.
Why does anyone go there?
Busy place, queue outside. Don't really know why though. Food was OK but tiny portion of beef on large pile of mash for quite a lot of money. Microscopic servings of slaw - like a teaspoon. Beef gone in seconds then just a plate of mash... Apple crumble was a joke. Barely 3 spoons and its gone. Quite hectic inside. So I really don't know what the fuss is about. You can have far better food for the same money without the queue at loads of other places. Really dissapointed.
Delicious food, but BEWARE you may not get a table after waiting in the wrong line at the 2nd location
Beware - if you're a walk-in, wait in line at the corner location. We waited 30 minutes at the other location around 6:30pm on a Friday only to get to the front of the line to be told that location was full! We and the 20 people behind us had to join the back of the line at the other location. I even stopped by at 3pm and asked the hostess how things would look around 6, and she didn't bother to explain their system. Also, don't get your hopes up about your order while you're in line. 2 out of 3 menu items my son ordered were out. Last complaint is this was the only restaurant after a week in Scotland where the server essentially asked me for a tip -- other places some servers took the machine from me and marked no tip themselves knowing I'm American and not wanting to take advantage. That said, all the food was delicious. The sauce on the chicken was a highlight. Cheddar, Applewood cheese and bacon+onion mashes all excellent. Lamb fell off the bone. Lions mane mushrooms were interesting, and the mushroom display in the basement was a treat.
Dinner
Excellent and quick service from the staff (Notis & Caitlin) and the food was great with the Haggis starter being top notch
Shoulder and service top tier
Been craving the beef shoulder ever since. So good. Only to be made better by the service, Alan was my servers name i think. Polite and informative. Would visit again when back in the city.
Birthday meal incredible
Incredible everything! Went for my birthday meal and was surprised by the staff with a birthday sticky toffee pudding and the whole restaurant singing! Couldn’t recommend enough
Fabulous food and great service
Fantastic food, lovely staff, and a friendly and warm welcome with prompt service, but we didn't feel rushed despite the obvious popularity. We ordered the hog sausage and haggis plus the fruit crumble desert. The dishes are just as delicious as they sound on the menu, and the quality of the I gradient is obvious, as are the skills and care of the chefs . We were looked after by Emily, Caitlin, and Kallen, all of whom made us feel like we were the only customers they were dealing with that night despite the crowds. The restaurant operates a simple text-based queuing system that means you can go for a stroll and return at the time suggested by staff. 10 out of 10 and we will definitely be returning next time we visit Edinburgh
Lovely restaurant need more around the uk
Friendly staff, delicious food, bill wasn't extortionate and portions left our bellies full! Wish we had one of these in every city in the UK

Made reservations to dine here on a weekday afternoon for a late lunch and I am glad we stopped by! Friendly service. Great tasting food and very reasonable prices. Def suggest making reservations, the walk-in lines can be lengthy (and for good reason!). Def agree with their own description of Scottish comfort food. Our group tried the beef shoulder and the boar sausage. We did ask for an additional side of mash that never came but wasn't an issue knocking it off the bill. Full bar and beer options. Will come back again on the next visit!
We went to Makars yesterday on a Sunday for lunch.
Here's some key takeaways: - the walk up lines are LONG. Plan for a wait or go here at an off time. For us, they lose a star because there's no real feel for how long we're waiting. The line is long and outside. For a business this successful in the 21st century, get an iPad or something so people can queue and know their place. - the food was great, but they were out of the Lion's Mane mushroom, which they advertise all over the website and on the walls of the building. Several of our party specifically went for this. If the restaurant had posted on the door or told us when we queued, then no problem. Waiting all that time just to find out we couldn't order the main dish we wanted was very frustrating. Overall, this was a decent experience. Because of the queue and the missing item surprise, we won't be back.

There are 2 Makars Gourmet Mash Bars, one is reservations and one is walk in only. My family and I went to the walk in only branch and waited around 30 minutes in line for a table for 4. The food was definitely worth the wait! The restaurant is cozy, warm, and smells delicious. We ordered the haggis (not pictured) which was very tasty and came in a rich creamy gravy. We also ordered the scotch eggs (not pictured) which were fresh with a crunchy exterior. Definitely recommend both starters. The mains were so so good and felt like homemade comfort food. The lamb shank was fall off the bone. The gravy for the chicken was so good we all fought over eating that gravy with our mash. The beef was probably the least favorite of the 3 as the top was abit dry, but it was still yummy. Service was excellent, we were updated on how long the wait would be and our waitress was attentive and friendly. Overall, worth the visit--either book way in advance for this restaurant or shell out extra time to wait in the walk in only queue.

Our waiter, Cam, only had 2 weeks experience & he was just as exceptional as the food!! Great service, awesome food - totally worth the wait! Oh - and the sticky toddy pudding is to-die-for. Don't leave without dessert!!
Super friendly host.
Service and tables are fine. Restrooms are clean and bar is well stocked. This place is packed day in and day out. Food is amazing! Beef roast, lamb shank sausage chicken is like something grandma used to make if grandma was a great cook. It's a little crowded the sit down one is better experienced that the take away branch up the road. It's a must stop if you visit Edinburgh.

I'm not sure why this place has a multiple month wait? It was good, but I wasn't blown away. I know I'm hyper critical, but I'm just honest. I got the mini haggis, sweet potato soup, and sticky toffee pudding. While the haggis was good, it wasn't spectacular. It was hot and the flavors went together well, I just felt like the haggis wasn't seasoned as much as others. May be there take on haggis. The soup was also hot, but just okay. The sticky toffee pudding is what dropped their food rating down to a 3. Dry. Flavorless. I've had better. Service was meh. Hardly saw anyone. Very brash. We did the walk in option, and we didn't wait long at all and it was 1 pm. They were out of scotch eggs by this time. On a Tuesday. And the atmosphere was dark and weird. Sticky tables. Sticky seats. Maybe if I got something else, it would be better? It's worth a try if you're new to haggis and want a hot meal. But I wouldn't go back.
Lovely mash, yum
A lovely place for lunch. The veggie haggis was delicious , as long as you like it peppery( which I do) . Nice friendly staff and right near the castle which was handy
Great lunch
Haggis with black pudding mash was delicious. Food came out quickly without feeling rushed. Staff were friendly. Nice decor.
Delicious dinner!
This was a delicious dinner spot! I got the roast beef and my husband got the haggis with black pudding mash. This was our favorite meal in Edinburgh! It was very fresh and authentic Scottish food. Would definitely recommend!
Wonderful eatery outside Edinburgh castle
The haggis was very good and felt authentic, would recommend. Great selection of ciders and beers. As tourists the prices felt reasonable. Great atmosphere and service.
Great place to eat in Edinburgh
Great food, great service in a nice, casual environment. Good value for the money. Tried many of the mashes and all were excellent.
The food was good here; a long wait, so make a reservation
The food was good here; a long wait, so make a reservation if possible. The cider and toffee bread pudding was good. The lions mane with butter mashed was good; I'd like to try the Scottish egg and beef next time.
Phenomenal meats and mash.
100% lives up to its reputation and hype. Lamb shank was perfectly prepared and not gamey at all. Would recommend the classic mash for this. The cheddar becomes an odd contrast and took away from the lamb flavor imho. Beef shoulder was perfectly cooked as well. A bit fatty in the center but easily scraped out. Went well with either the classic or the cheddar mash. The scotch egg was good but the dipping sauce was odd to our palates. Likely just our inexperience. Still very good. Come here with a reservation or be prepared for a long wait in queue. But it is worth the wait!
Mash was the best
Excellent food, great service. Very warm and welcoming place on a cold day. Didn’t need to wait to long as a walk in on the day.
Hearty, delicious food
Fantastic selection of meat/veg with multiple mash options. Our party ate chicken with whiskey & Drambuie sauce with mustard mash and the wild boar sausages with smoked bacon and mustard mash and horseradish mash. All the food was really tasty. We all had desert - sticky toffee pudding was divine as was the crumble. Service was excellent.
DELICIOUS
Had lunch here the other day with my partner and we were served by the lovely Rae! He was very kind and helpful. He recommended the chicken for me and the lamb for my partner and I have to say it was the best food ever!! We will be returning soon!! Thankyou Rae!
Best food in town
The best food we have eaten in Edinburgh! Such amazing service and kindness from the staff, specifically Katie and Rae. They were patient and attentive with our large party. The lamb was a favorite in our group but we genuinely enjoyed every dish we ordered. Go here for the good stuff.

I highly recommend Makars! It was raining when we arrived, so we had to wait outside for a few minutes. The host brought us an umbrella to use during our wait. How thoughtful!! Our food was amazing! We had the haggis appetizer and I was so surprised how delicious it was. For our main course, we each chose a meat and a mashed potato flavor. We got the sausage, lamb, and beef. We liked the beef and lamb the best. We tried the cheddar, smoked cheese, and another mashed potato. They were all delicious. I would love to come back and try several other options. If I had to give one negative comment, it would be the drip coffee. Mine was not very warm and just okay. Overall, I really enjoyed our experience!
Epic comfort food!! Everything was great.
..make reservations well ahead. We managed an early dinner walk-in on the patio, but weren't able to return as we had hoped.
Amazing meal! I had the vegetarian haggis and my husband
Amazing meal! I had the vegetarian haggis and my husband had the real deal. Both were delicious. For dessert we shared the Sticky Toffee pudding which was delicious. You can't get a better meal.
Service was great from all staff.
The lamp with spring onion mash was so good, and the lion's mane mushrooms with horseradish mash was my favorite! If you don't have a reservation, the walk in line moves fast. Make sure you stop by the mushroom emporium in the basement!
If you are planning a visit to edinburgh and want to try
If you are planning a visit to edinburgh and want to try makars mash do not think that you will just be able to walk in. We saw so many people being told there was no availability that day and walk away looking disappointed. This is definitely a place that needs planning and preparation because it is so good! NOW that is to say that EVERYTHING we ate in edinburgh was delicious but this. Man. and this is coming from someone who gets the ick from meat often. I asked for a suggestion and was unsure about the whole beef shoulder or whatever part of the animal it was but it was so savory and delicious that i still get upset that i got full and didnt finish it. I truly cannot wait to be back and get to eat this again.
We had a lovely Scottish dinner at Makars Mash last week.
I would recommend to book in advance. They have 2 locations that 4 doors away from each other. One is for reservations and one is for walk in only. I reserved my table a couple months ago, and it was nice that they reached out the morning of to confirm my reservation. The restaurant was cozy, and well decorated. Service was phenomenal. My waiter was very friendly and thorough about food allergy. We ordered the Scotch eggs for starter. For main dishes, we got lamb shank, Haggis, beef shoulder, black pudding mash and their home grown Lion's mane mushroom dish that was recommended by my waiter. Everything was delicious!!! I loved the Scotch eggs a lot. The lion's mane mushroom dish was phenomenal and interesting. I didn't expect that but it was the star of the show. The lamb shank and beef shoulder was fall of the bone tender and very flavorful. Black pudding mash was amazing. I just didn't get used to the taste of Haggis but it's just me. What I missed was the sticky toffee pudding. We were so stuffed that we couldn't order their desserts. Overall, it was an incredible experience!!! I gotta say it was the best Scottish restaurant that we visited during our time in Edinburgh. I would highly recommend Makars Mash to anyone who visiting Edinburgh anytime soon.

This place was incredible! It met all the hype from the Yelp reviews. First of all, I loved our server - wish I could remember his name - but he was so friendly and funny. We also had a lovely couple sitting next to us from the states as well that we ended up chatting with for most of the meal. The food!! Everything is amazing, but my personal favorites were the scotch egg salad, the vegetarian haggish, the char grilled chicken with mustard sauce and the bacon and chive mashed potatoes. I would definitely come back to this place if we had more time this trip!!!
We really enjoyed everything about this place.
We made reservations and I'd recommend doing so.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
