Mattie's Austin Reviews
Always a delight to dine at Mattie's.
Took my dad and his girlfriend to brunch. They loved the property, food, and attentive service, We started with pimento cheese spread, and the fried green tomatoes with crab. Very rich treat. My dad tried the breakfast plate and his girlfriend had salad. I enjoyed the farm salad with salmon. The server suggest that I try the preserve lemon dressing, which was perfect. Don't forget to wave to the peacocks.
The food was fabulous!! Fresh ingredients, plenty of food
The food was fabulous!! Fresh ingredients, plenty of food (portions). Service was spectacular! Our server was Deon and he was a seasoned server with excellent customer service, proper service, and a touch of charm! The staff was prepared and everyone had a job!! Great first impression from the moment we entered! What a beautiful place (hotel and spa coming soon). The property has beautiful gardens with peacocks roaming.
Poor customer experience
Good coffee. We had an outside seating at 1145 and it was too hot. No one was outside so we asked for a shaded area and were told no. Overall were not friendly in the front and snooty They seated us at the breakfast bar. It was a special birthday for us and made us feel bad.

We came to celebrate a birthday and had a great time! The property is beautiful and perfect for any special occasion. The items with (v) on their menu can be made vegan - I ordered the avocado toast with a side of potatoes which were very good. Service was very kind and attentive, we will definitely be back!

This is a truly unique dining experience in Austin! You pull into the driveway and are immediately greeted by many peacocks - there was even a baby peacock while we were there. The trees are beautiful as well with a setting that makes you feel as if you are far outside of the city. The restaurant itself is inside of a historic home which gives it a super cozy atmosphere. We ordered the biscuits, shrimp & grits, grilled chicken, and risotto. Everything was delicious, but our favorites were the biscuits and chicken. The chicken came with an amazing burrata salad on the side that really stood out.
Overall tonight Mattie's was a miss.
This was my third time at the restaurant and the other occasions have been much better. The ambiance is 5/5, great restaurant with plenty of parking and wait staff is very nice. If you arrive early there is a bar you can get a drink even order food. We got a few appetizers tonight which were all good: Peaches and burrata Pimiento cheese Carrots Most of the table got the steak frites. This dish for the entire table was completely oversalted. The French fries were inedible for everyone there was so much salt. Literally. The steak also had too much salt. Serving a $40+ meal that was salted too heavily for an upscale restaurant needs to be fixed. I would be surprised if this was an isolated incident.
What a fantastic find! Even though it was raining it was
What a fantastic find! Even though it was raining it was such a cool building to have brunch in! I thought the food was really good, although some others didn't love their food...I can't wait to come back and try other things. Def a spot to bring friends/family when they are visiting. It's one of those places where you're just like...."i love austin".. only thing to really ding them for is the auto grat..kinda lame but won't affect me.
Good food, Good service, Good views
Phenomenal brunch spot! Came for the first time and it was an absolute pleasure. The property is very quaint and beautiful. The food was delicious. I’m not a cinnamon roll fan at all but they were delicious. The cheese for the kolache was creamy and spicy with so much flavor. My husband ordered the steak and eggs. The steak was cooked to perfection and the potato cake was so creamy. I had the chilaquiles and they were just as delicious. The pork was tender and the tortilla chips were crisp. The fresh veggies mixed in gave it the perfect lightness and heat from the jalapeños. The service was top notch. Everyone was so friendly and went above and beyond. Can’t wait to go back!
Absolutely stunning property.
Amazing customer service. Everything we ordered was delicious. Would recommend come in here and definitely going to come back again. Parking was easy.

Disappointed in the smoked salmon.
Didn't even taste smoked! Bartlett's on Anderson Lane and Burnett is MUCH better. Enjoyed the ambiance, waiter was great! Food, not so much. Forget the bagel. Too strong for salmon. Go to Bartlett's & see what yummy smoked salmon should be!

First let me tell you, I don't pay attention to where we were going to brunch and screamed with excitement pulling in and seeing the beautiful peacocks walking the property!! OMGosh! They are so beautiful and magnificent! The restaurant itself is so nice too. It's beautifully decorated and rebuilt to retain its original charm. Our waitress was very happy and bubbly and seemed to love the food here. I started with a mimosa, which was good but seemed like I was getting someone's left over glass since it was only maybe half full. We got the biscuits and strawberry butter to start. The biscuits were not warm and the honey drizzle was everywhere. The knife and the edges of the plate they brought with it was covered in it so we were covered in it. The burrata and peaches salad was ok. The peaches were not great, some had an overly fake smoke taste while some had zero taste altogether. I had the bread pudding French toast with strawberry rhubarb compote and it was very good but very sweet. I would tell any sweet loving person to get that. My husband got the bowl and he enjoyed the cucumber salad in it. All in all the ambience was a 5 star but the food and drink 3.
Poor waitstaff person but good food
The food was good. The service was sub-par. Our server arrived to our table and lets us know he was glad today was his work Friday. Never a smile off this guy. Our order was incorrect. We were ignored when our meal was done and table cleared. Had to ask for our check and ask again for card to be picked up. This guy should not be in the service industry. The rest of the staff, from hostess to people who brought out the food, were excellent. But the main waitstaff person definitely gave us a negative experience overall.
A historic South Austin farmhouse with peacocks prancing
A historic South Austin farmhouse with peacocks prancing around the front driveway...This is definitely a destination restaurant! My NYC-now Austin residing friends wanted to show me the stylish side of Texas so they booked a dinner reservation at Mattie's. At first I was going to ask them to choose another restaurant. I had studied the menu online in advance and thought to myself "oh no American Southern Comfort Food? That is dangerous diet territory for me!" My naturopath back home has me journaling EVERYTHING I put in my mouth - No carbs, no beans, grains or legumes! Sugar also a no-no! Temptation would be so great...put a buttermilk biscuit in front of me and there's no way for me to avoid taking a bite! But I decided, hey I'm only in Austin for another day, I could cheat a little. When we drove up, peacocks were everywhere, some males courting the females while restaurant guests seated on the side outdoor porch tables watched. It was magical. We were half hour early so the staff allowed us to go inside and take a self-guided tour of the different dining rooms, bars and alcoves inside and upstairs of the farmhouse. Every room was gorgeously decorated. There was a private party in one of the larger dining rooms upstairs. We were seated in a cozy banquette corner in a dining room downstairs. We ordered Wood Grilled Rainbow Carrots with, cardamom yogurt, pistachio, peppers, sumac vinaigrette; Wild Mushroom and Burrata with confit garlic, truffle oil and 10yr. aged balsamic; Beet and Citrus Arugula Salad with fennel, iced goat cheese, candied hazelnuts, preserved lemon vinaigrette; Crispy Cauliflower with Thai bird chile, tamarind BBQ sauce, scallions, cilantro; Fried Brussels Sprouts with mint and "coconut bacon". I did eat 1 tiny bite of Buttermilk Biscuits with butter and local honey. The food was delicious, but the place and ambiance (inside and outside) steals all the spotlight.
The property is so beautiful and my daughters wedding was
The property is so beautiful and my daughters wedding was at Mattie's two years ago. decided to go to dinner at Mattie's for our 39th wedding anniversary along with including my daughter and her husband. The service was very bad! I had the $58 steak and fries. Seemed like a $5 steak with tasteless French fries--nothing special for $58) The steak was very fatty and overcooked with tons of mediocre fries piled on top. My husbands mashed potatoes had hard pieces of bacon mixed in with the potatoes. My son in law said the special soft shell crab sandwich was fishy tasting. My daughter said her burger wasn't the same as usual. Cocktails took forever and dessert was just okay. Since it was our anniversary we ordered four glasses of champagne to go with our dessert. By the time we got our champagne we ate the dessert. The champagne ($80) for four glasses smelled like apple juice and tasted like sparkling apple cider???! Waitress just kept disappearing and they weren't all that crowded! $400 later we were all just very disappointed!!!!
Great food, wonderful service.
An absolutely beautiful environment and vibe. Will definitely be going back next time we visit Austin.
Really enjoyed the ambiance of this place.
we were seated outdoors along the porch and were able to see the male peacocks strut their stuff during our meal. it was hot outside but the fan and mister were nice touches. The fly fans barely helped and kinda made our meal hectic. Just something to consider if you end up outside but doesn't ruin the meal. plenty of parking is available in the lot and in the neighborhood. The food was great! Started with the special that they had, white fish ceviche was tasty and had the right amount of tang. Our favorite was the fried green tomatoes with crab salad because it was crispy and well balanced with the sauce and salad. I would say our cocktails tasted weak so i switched to wine after. The redfish with cous cous was a really tasty meal that we shared. I would skip on the smoked salmon and bread next time as i thought it had too much mayo. Our server was kind of standoffish but I feel like it wasn't because it was busy. Not sure if there was something else going on that day. His humor wasn't funny to us, he forgot to put in my second drink order but then he brought out a slice of mousse chocolate cake with happy birthday on it, soooo all is forgiven. Glad i finally got to dine here.
When ordering menu cocktails, the server asked if we wanted
When ordering menu cocktails, the server asked if we wanted Tito's or grey goose in the drinks and my party answered Tito's. The server did not indicate this would be an upcharge, just an option between vodkas and each drink had a $10 upcharge on a $17 drink for the Tito's "upgrade." It seemed shady and a high price to pay for Tito's
The food, service, and environment was amazing.
Probably my favorite restaurant we went to in Austin. We had a lovely brunch then took drinks out on the porch. Cocktails were delicious and refreshing. Will be returning

5/5 for the atmosphere! The outside dining patio is super cute with string lights all over for decor and the building has such charm. Not to mention the beautiful peacocks everywhere as the cherry on top! 5/5 for the food! We started with the Brie Fondue and the sour cream and onion dip. Both homemade. The bread that came with the fondue was the star of the show; super fresh, warm and filled with nuts and cranberries. Paired deliciously with the warm Brie! For entrees we got the lobster club salad, the French toast and the shrimp and grits. All three of us completely cleared our plates. No notes. The only reason I am giving 4/5 stars is due to staff. They were BAD, I just was expecting more. Our waiter kept spilling water all over our table when we filled our glasses and leaving it there. Unsure if he didn't notice (highly unlikely) or if he just didn't care. It's was very odd to me.... That said, I would absolutely return and highly recommend!
Food was good.
. I got the salad with grilled chicken, outdoor vibes were great and the peacocks were a cool touch.
The vegan options did not disappoint.
This place is such a gem, perfect for a romantic date or anything special, really. I mean, peacocks and the entire ambience...just perfect.
Service was excruciatingly slow and curt.
It took over 30 minutes to get a cup of black coffee, and my daughter's simple order of avocado toast came out 15 minutes after all the hot entrees arrived. We had taken out of town guests to brunch and were embarrassed by how staff responded when we politely inquired as to the status of the missing meal. Food was okay and the setting is beautiful, but with service this poor it seems inappropriate that a twenty percent tip is automatically added.
Beautiful place for brunch
What used to be Green pastures is now Mattie's and it's probably a good thing. The setting is one-of-a-kind at the house and the gardens are nice with the peacocks everywhere. Note that a lot of seating is on the patio, which can get CRAZY hot and sunny. We tried to get indoor seating but were unsuccessful. But it was still nice on the patio once we got an umbrella. The brunch was great. Drinks wonderful and food was better than expected. Wife and daughter both said they want to go back next time in Austin.
My girlfriend and I had such an amazing time here.
We came for a date night where you let the server choose everything for you. Michael was a gem and chose a lot of good options for us. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The atmosphere is also really romantic outside.

Mattie's is located at what looks like a surburby part of Austin and was a good 15-20 minute Uber ride from Rainey street area. The restaurant itself is super cute and looks like an impressive southern mansion with tons of outdoor seating out in the front. The back space looks like they could be good for special events.Seems like a reservation is the way to go because it gets really crowded for weekend brunch. We didn't have one, so we got seated outside on a cold winter day. Typically, with the amount of land there would be peacocks roaming around, but we were unlucky that it was too cold for any to be out and about. Our waitress played her part with southern hospitality well, referring to us as ma'am, lady, gentlemen, etc. Food wise, I got an avocado toast with a wild boar sausage on the side and it was typical brunch food. The bread was a bit over toasted but the accompaniment on the toast (tomatoes, pickled onions) were very good and added some acidity and texture. If you're seated outside make sure to at least go inside to take a peek at the neat space.
This place has it all! If you love true southern comfort
This place has it all! If you love true southern comfort food, then it's a must. We started with their infamous biscuits that were to die for! We also had the carrots, pork ribs, fried chicken, cauliflower side and for dessert, Texas pecan pie. Every bite was so scrumptious, it was like you were eating in your southern grandmother's kitchen. The restaurant itself was like being in a movie. A beautiful, white house with a wrap porch. It was just so charming. And the service was equally as outstanding! Honestly, I have zero complaints. Highly recommend!
Excellent service, food and ambiance.
The fried chicken, pimento cheese, curry bowl and pecan pie are a must!
The service and ambiance are just incredible here.
If you ever want to take a visitor somewhere impressive, look no further
I have never ever gotten so sick with food poisoning as I
I have never ever gotten so sick with food poisoning as I did after eating the eggs yesterday. Within an hour, my stomach was bubbly and the vomit started a few hours later. I would be very careful eating here - you do not want to get this sick. It was the worst I have ever suffered. It finally stopped around midnight. I have been in hell.... so many great places in Austin - skip this one.
This is a great place! The grounds and house are beautiful
This is a great place! The grounds and house are beautiful and we had exceptional service! The cinnamon brioche donut are a perfect starter. I had the breakfast plate and it didn't disappoint. My boyfriend had the chipotle pork chiliquiles and loved it. My sister had the milk punch toast,,, not too sweet either. My niece had the basmati rice bowl and was pleased. Warning come hungry,,, large servings.
Food, service, ambiance.
.. all were exceptional! Would highly recommend Mattie's to anyone visiting Austin.
Mattie's is good, not great.
Go here for the beautiful grounds, the peacocks, the old Austin architecture, and the general atmosphere. We met a few friends here on a Friday night. We got seated early, which meant we didn't get a chance to sit at the very chic bar. Despite being crowded, it looked very hip. I'll admit, we arrived on the heels of Austin's latest blackout, so I don't know if this is normally the case, but the parking lot was pitch black at 7pm. We were crawling along at 2mph so we wouldn't hit anyone, be careful when parkingIt looks like there are two stories of seating, but we were seated in the main dining area on the ground floor and it was LOUD. As in shout-to-be-heard-at-your-own-table loud. The older architecture has a lot going for it, just not great acoustics. The waitstaff was pleasant, but we had to repeat our food and drink orders multiple times. Ultimately we ended up with the la Lousiane and John Henry's Julep. For whatever reason, it seemed like they wanted licorice flavor in every cocktail, and it was especially noticeable in the la Lousiane. Being a gentleman, I chugged my wife's drink since she wasn't having it. I then settled on the Faulk Old Fashioned, mainly because it's simple and tough to screw up. All three drinks were on the stiff side, which was much appreciated. The food was...just okay. The mushrooms + barata was okay. The cheese plate was okay. Where they $15+ appetizers? I don't think so.For our mains I had the pork ribs while my wife had the fried chicken. "Inconsistent" was the word of the evening with the entrees. My ribs were tender, but relatively flavorless and there was an odd amount of small bones. My wife's chicken was very tender, but the batter was all over the place. Soggy and barely adhering in some places, ultra crispy in others. The cauliflower was also very inconsistent. Considering the cheapest entrée is $20, and most options are $30+, I expected a higher level of execution. Maybe Mattie's is a great place to grab a drink before you head downtown, but for a fancy dinner, this ain't it.
Great food and service. Pretty place.
We went for Saturday brunch. The milk punch packed a punch and the fried chicken eggs benedict was delicious. The fried green tomatoes with crab salad was a great light meal, but we added biscuits and bacon to round it out and all were delicious. It is out of the way but worth the trip!

This place is absolutely adorable! The house is gorgeous and the land around it is beautiful. The peacocks roaming the grounds are super cute too! The food here is delicious! Drinks are good. My only qualm was the service. They weren't very attentive and gave off a snooty vibe. Definitely didn't ruin our visit, but could be improved. Overall, definitely a great place to try. Don't forget to make a reservation!
Great austin bar/restaurant.
If you want a very special experience for a date this is it. Old school ambiance with peacocks and old oak trees. I prefer going for drinks over the food but it's all great
Not worth repeating
Lovely ambiance, but food very overrated. Buttermilk biscuits dense, wild mushroom dish served lukewarm. Key lime tart excellent but not enough to inspire a return trip. Overpriced.
