really good bbq! got two orders of two meats with two sides.
great portions.
Be the first to ReplyBring on the meats! Underrated BBQ spot.
We brought our two dogs and they got spoiled with dog treats. We inhaled the brisket, sausage, and ribs with sides. Next time, we will omit the ribs (nothing wrong, but nothing special), but don't sleep on the brisket and sides. It's a perfect spot in the spring before the weather gets too hot!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food! Nice outdoor set up.
Different options to choose from that stood out like the pulled lamb

Wow, what an amazing BBQ. Get the sausage and brisket! Also, don't miss out on the jalapeño grits! The staff and atmosphere is beautiful!
Be the first to ReplyWe are avid bbq eaters.
The bbq here is ok. There are so many outstanding bbq places near by. We are so confused by the reviews. Definitely not worth the wait. The beans are really good. Sorry to give a bad review. Gave 2 stars because the bbq wasn't terrible but it wasn't outstanding. Don't believe the hype.

Alright, all those other BBQ places, including the one where people pay people to stand in line all day, don't hold a candle to Mickelthwait's. Go there good and often with an empty stomach. You'll thank me later.
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, why not try it? The most Austin BBQ to ever exist.
The sausage is delicious and BBQ is even better.
Be the first to ReplySides were fantastic, best I had on trip.
BBQ itself was top three I had the week we were there (incl. Franklin).

I'm not a Texas BBQ noob by any means so your mileage may vary. It's a unique setup basically a food truck/trailer and next door they sell tacos at night. Only a couple people working running the whole thing but it didn't detract from anything. The brisket was fantastic, the sides were good and a little different than what you see at most bbq joints. The only downside IMHO was the pork ribs. Nothing spectacular and I've made better on my smoker. They're not the fall off the bone type of ribs if that's what you're looking for. They were out of beef ribs so I can't comment on those however I've heard good things. Overall a good Austin bbq stop and nice to eat outside on a nice day.

Located just down the street from the perpetually packed Franklin's, Micklethwait has arguably comparable BBQ with a much less longer wait. Thanks to a couple friends who live in Austin, they showed me this place during a work trip and it was easily the food highlight of my time there. We made sure to try all the classics including: spicy sausage, beef brisket, and the pork ribs. My personal favorite was the brisket, every piece was juicy with just the right amount of fat and a visible smoke ring so you know it's legit. Don't sleep on their sides either! My go-to the next time I'm here will definitely be the cheesy grits. The sausage also deserve an honorable mention, they had a nice snap and were not dry at all. Looking forward to my next visit here!
Be the first to ReplyVisited Austin for a weekend getaway and was lucky enough
Visited Austin for a weekend getaway and was lucky enough to stumble (quite literally) across the most amazing Brisket of my life!! Nestled in a lovely beer garden behind Saddle Up and next to Taco Bronco, Micklethwait Meats was immediately on our list of places to eat, even before we realized this is one of THE SPOTS. They had already sold out for the day so we did partake in Taco Bronco and then decided to come back early the next day. I have never used the term "meat candy" but there's really no other way to describe it's perfection... The brisket was everything I wanted and then some and gone within 7minutes.Pork Spare Ribs were *chefs kiss* melt in your mouth. The mac n cheese was perfectly creamy and complementary, not the average bland mac that's just often accompanying such a meat star. The Lemon Poppy Cole Slaw was also really great and refreshing! Something I'd never experienced but helped complete the meal!
Be the first to ReplyHidden treasure for BBQ in Austin.
Tremendous brisket and in a fun set up where you can get drinks or other cuisine in a shared spot for several food trucks. But the food was as good or better than advertised
Be the first to ReplyWe were first in line and we got in asap.
The brisket was easy to pull apart. The sausage was huge and it definitely tasted better than generic sausage.
Be the first to ReplyOut of the many bbq food trucks, they have the best brisket.
It's on par with Terry Black's!

I'd your looking for quality BBQ and no wait for it this is definitely the spot for you. The brisket here is amazing and will literally melt in your mouth. I've tried most of the menu items on my visits and I've had nothing but good experiences.

Micklethwait is like the locals' Franklins (personal opinion). This spot has been on my list for VERY long time, and I am so excited that I finally got to wreck a good meal here. We arrived shortly after it opened. There wasn't a long line. Waited about 20 minutes to order, and the woman taking the orders was really friendly. We got the pork ribs, brisket, coleslaw, and pickled jalapenos. Everything was delicious. Huge shout out on the pork ribs - it was fall off the bone and even the fatty parts were melted through enough to eat. Absolutely amazing meal! Also, drink spot onsite, if your BYOB game lacks. 100% check this place out.
Be the first to ReplyBest BBQ in town!!!! On top of that, best smoked Turkey
Best BBQ in town!!!! On top of that, best smoked Turkey I've ever had. It's a food truck off Rosedale/E 12th area. Between Saddle Up, Taco Bronco, and Micklethwait, you've got it MADE. Lots of misters and covered seating, a small parking lot. Don't wait around too long on the weekends, they definitely sell out.

With such a great selection of BBQ joints in Austin it's easy for some of them to get lost in the shuffle. Micklewait may not look fancy from first glance but don't let that deceive you as their meats can stand up to some of the best around town. The joint is mainly outdoors where you order at the food truck and there's mini convenience store where you can order drinks. First thing that stood out to me was the selection of meats as there were quite a few choices. I ended up trying their Barbacoa with their sausage and had their cheddar grits and beans for sides. Barbacoa was by far the best meat I tried super tasty and packed with flavor and went well with the creamy grits. My partner also had the brisket & potato salad which although it was good think some places around town do Brisket better. Sausage was Also good but probably needed a little more fat ratio. Even though I wouldn't call this place the best bbq in town I've tried I for sure would come back as I enjoyed the casualness of the place and how fast the food came out. Would love to try their turkey & ribs next time!
Be the first to ReplyI love the offbeat, experimentational nature of
I love the offbeat, experimentational nature of Micklethwait, but the BBQ was a little disappointing. The Thai chili sausage had some nice heat, but it was really dry--almost like it had been thawed and all the jiuces escaped. Also got the chicken, which comes as a half-chicken but I was able to order as a dark meat quarter. Yet I only received a thigh instead of a full leg quarter. The skin was nice and crispy, but the meat inside was nearly undercooked and hard to pull off the bone. Both the lean brisket and the spare ribs were tasty but lacked much in the way of smoke flavor. They saved the meal, but they weren't exceptional in any way.All of this is a shame because I appreciate Micklethwait's creativity. It has unique offerings, like pulled lamb and Thai sausage. They have interesting one-offs, like the tasty smashburger (a little oversalted) I had in February. Sides like jalapeño cheese grits and lemon poppy slaw are fun and cool. Plus, Micklethwait is a bit cheaper: when every other big name BBQ is doing brisket for $34/lb, Micklethwait does it for $28. That's a big deal.Overall, I hope the BBQ disappointment is a one-off becuase I like Micklethwait's style and creativity. But for now, it's a step behind some of the other BBQ places in town.
Be the first to ReplyThis was highly recommended by a coworker's family member
This was highly recommended by a coworker's family member so had to make a pit stop for lunch before our flights home. This is located a little bit off the main road onto a dirt road that opens up to a few other dining options. It is mainly outdoor dining with plentiful of tables with overhead shade. I typically can't eat too much so was actually recommended to try the Brisket Frito Pie. WOW - really impressed on how good it was! The brisket pieces may look over cooked because it's burnt on the outside but it was super tender and flavorful. Also, I wasn't too sure how the Fritos would taste in this meal but it really did complement the entire meal especially the added on crunch. Plus there were cheddar, sour cream, onion, chile, cilantro, and jalapeños to add in extra flavor overall. Highly recommend the brisket frito pie to those who want a balanced/variety option. Also, check out Saddle Up next door - grab a drink to enjoy with your bbq! Definitely would visit again when I'm back in town.

Worth the long wait, the brisket and frito pie is EPIC!
Be the first to ReplyProbably my favorite (semi-hidden gem) bbq spot in Austin.
The brisket is always perfectly seasoned, with the right amount of fat. The atmosphere here is also great! With the new opening of Saddle Up (the bar next door), great drinks are easily available, to go with great food.

So many choices in Austin for BBQ and this place doesn't disappoint. The lamb was the favorite and only problem is we didn't get enough its amazing.
Be the first to ReplyReally really awesome meat.
The brisket is phenomenal but honestly the turkey is startlingly good. Unlike other smoked turkey I've had in that it's super succulent. It's weird to describe meat with this much detail but trust me, get the turkey.
Be the first to ReplyAnother 'we got there too late for brisket' but the nice
Another 'we got there too late for brisket' but the nice folks here stayed they have chopped up brisket for other items that we could order just that if we were really set on just brisket. We got that and two sides; the jalapeño cheese grits that were incredible and the campfire chili beans that were just okay. The brisket was very tasty as it was a mix of flat, point, bark, the spices and smoke on the bark matched up very, very well. No need for bbq sauce here. Found out after we ate that they hooked us up with a slice of brisket so we could see the final product as intended. So nice of them. I had some time to talk to Carson(?) who was running the smokers while were there. He was carrying out a tray of impossible meat sausages that just came out of the smoker for a private event. I had no idea. The seating area is quite lovely. Had no issues with parking and seating due to the time we showed up? Keep this in mind if you're looking for some serious nice folks to cover specific meat choices for your gatherings? Give these folks a call! Having time to just chat with Carson just really made me feel good about supporting these smaller eateries.
