There are better steaks
If nothing else I love a delicious steak and I truly wanted to love it here. Dinner started with a visit from a champagne cart. I am not sure why, but this practiced seemed out of place here. Popovers were up next. While I know other places serve them, these made me miss The Cliffhouse. Appetizers were the pear salad and truffle deviled eggs, good but not great. We split the 46oz Tomahawk. Maybe I don't like dry-aged meat, maybe it was overcooked. But, I found myself chewing a lot and having to discard many bites of meat as it just was not digestible. We paired our steak with creamed kale, I wish it had just been creamed spinach with the added crispy onions. Dessert cart had options for most and the cappuccino I ordered was delicious. What I did really enjoy was the ambiance. It was a very stormy day on our visit and that just added a little something to it. I think there are plenty of better steaks to be had for the price point, I do not see myself returning.
Be the first to ReplyNot what we were expecting
Was visiting San Francisco and needed to book a decent steakhouse for our last night there. With other things going on, and having been given a list of recommendations by a friend who lives there, dinner was booked here without too much investigation...... On arrival we had to stand downstairs for 5 minutes or so not really sure what was happening as we expected to be shown to our table or if delayed, shown to the bar. Eventually we were taken upstairs and saw that this was a little more upmarket than were used to. A champagne cart was wheeled along to the table and 4 different bottles shown to us at varying price points! We opted for a glass of the second cheapest one!! We then saw the menu which we should really have looked at before booking! We are both more into a good hearty meal rather than fine dining although the menu did seem to cover both. At this point we had decided that the budget was going out the window as it was our last evening after a very nice holiday. We started with a Caesar salad for two which was excellently made at the table in front of us and tasted delicious. We were unsure about mains and the waiter bought out a big platter of the various steaks to look at. We were torn between the Tomahawk for two or an individual steak each, and decided upon the 20oz New York strip each at $94. The fries were Black Truffle Parmesan Fries at $15 and the waiter did say we only needed one between the two of us as they were so big. The steaks were very nice but the fries weren't great. Would have preferred just plain old fries rather than the additions to them. The desserts were shown to us but after a large steak each, decided we were pretty full and so passed on them. Total price for two of us, with tip was $450, or £355. It was very nice, and to be honest if we had looked at the menu beforehand we probably wouldn't have gone there. An unexpectedly lavish end to our holiday.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Birthday Dinner
My boyfriend and I had a phenomenal experience the other night. We were celebrating my birthday and the staff was genuinely happy to help make our experience a memorable one. I had the filet and it was cooked perfectly. My boyfriend ordered the sole and the table side presentation was fantastic. Both mains tasted amazing. We chose the mashed potatoes and the mushrooms as our sides and both were delicious. The potatoes were swimming in melted butter. The deviled eggs and oysters tasted amazing. I was underwhelmed by the Caesar salad. It tasted fine, but it was more spectacle than substance. You can get better Caesar salads for half the price at other restaurants. The white chocolate cheesecake was delicious and came with a candle and I received a handwritten birthday card. It wasn't signed by Tyler, but I know deep down that he wishes he could've been there to sing for me. Overall, it was an amazing experience and worth the money. The table next to ours shared their waygu tomahawk steak with us, so that was a plus. We'll definitely go back for martinis and the fries. For the price point, everyone was very laid back and chill. No one was snotty or pretentious.
Be the first to ReplyMiller & Lux cares about customers!
This is going to be different review as it is more about how Miller & Lux handled adversity than strictly about the dining experience. I was visiting for a large conference at the Moscone last week and my hotel was close by the Chase stadium. After the obligatory cocktail hours for the conference, I decided to eat something more substantial and found Miller & Lux highly recommended. So I walked on down from my hotel a handful of blocks. This is an upscale restaurant directly adjacent to the stadium. (Note, maps sometimes point you to wrong side, it is on the water side). Since I was by myself, I decided to sit at the bar and watch the remainder of the playoff game. The bar started filling in a bit and one individual, who looked like a professional athlete started being quite loud on his phone. I ignored him but at one point he decided to loudly diss the Warriors, and speak demeaningly at women in the bar despite having his girlfriend with him. She actually tried to apologize for him but it quickly got out of hand. The great part is how M & L staff, especially Tiff, moved in to settle things down. Miller & Lux did their best to make things right afterwards. They even contacted my hotel to offer their apologies I don't think anyone heading to an very upscale restaurant would go in expecting someone so belligerent but I appreciate what M&L did to handle the situation. Thanks Miller and Lux for going the extra mile! I'm looking forward to my next visit and hoping to try out more dishes on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyBest steak house in the US
I’m an amateur critic of steak houses and tend to seek out the best in each city we visit. Personally, Keens in NYC and Bones in Atlanta are our go-tos. I recently had the joy to discover there would be a pop up Miller & Lux at the Four Seasons Hualalai. We tried it, and it exceeded all expectations. We came back twice, it was that good. We were a party of six, and ordered the filet mignon, the without equal burger, the truffle fettuccine, and the 10 oz steak. The food was all incredibly fresh and deliciously prepared. The quality of the ingredients was impressive and the sauces deliciously complemented the meat. I can’t say enough good things about the warm and attentive service. Chris and Chef Tyler have clearly poured their hearts into Miller & Lux, and it shows. We are already looking forward to visiting in San Francisco. Congratulations on a huge success!
Be the first to Reply50th Birthday Dinner
I had decided to do something Special for my wife’s 50th Birthday as we were visiting from Toronto Canada. Well this place did not disappoint!! The food was amazing. We were there with another couple and got the double order of the Caesar Salad for two. We then shared the Tomahawk Steak and a whole chilled Lobster and a side of whipped Potatoes. We then had two amazing desserts! Overall well worth the money! And PS, the Manhattan’s are amazing!
Be the first to ReplyTyler Florence’s Upscale Steakhouse…Prepare to Spend
I'm hardly on the cusp of being a dining tastemaker in this foodaholic town. I follow the pack like everyone else, and I'm making this concession because I had never heard of celebrity chef Tyler Florence's upscale steakhouse until it showed up on a recent episode of "Check, Please! Bay Area". It looked like solid American fare in a white tablecloth setting punctuated by Florence's convincing hard sell pitch. Coincidentally my husband was at a loss to find a restaurant to celebrate a certain birthday, so I impulsively suggested this spot recognizing host Leslie Sbrocco said the average tab per person was a somewhat elevated $125. We had assumed it was in the actual Chase Center, but it turned out to be in a building next to it facing Terry A Francois Blvd. The entrance was very low-key with the signage barely noticeable from the sidewalk. The dark wood of the semicircular bar was the first thing we saw once we entered, and the hostess took us up one flight of stairs to the bustling dining room. Most of the tables were filled with small groups made up of corporate suits or families. We were seated in a more isolated booth facing another table set up for two. We kept waiting for a couple to show up, but gratefully no one arrived. Frankly it would've been awkward to dine face to face with strangers. The server came by bearing a birthday card signed by Tyler. It wasn't personalized, but hey, it's the thought that counts, right? Because of the occasion, he left us a small menu of their champagne cart selections. Jamie went for a $29 flute of the Pierre Gimmonet Blanc du Blancs Brut, which offered a crisp fresh flavor.I ordered a $38 flute of the Charles Heidsieck Rose Brut Reserve. It had a more full-bodied fruity flavor. The bubbly effervescence put us in a good mood for the complimentary popovers that arrived with frozen butter soon afterward. Appetizers came next, and I rarely miss an opportunity for deviled eggs because they're the first things I devour at cocktail parties. The $24 Truffle Deviled Eggs didn't disappoint as they consisted of a half-dozen egg halves filled artfully with a chive crème fraiche and accompanied by crudité. The main starter event, however, was the $34 Miller & Lux Caesar Salad for Two since they turn the order into Food Network-style performance art. In truth, it appeared more like a lift of the same tableside show at the House of Prime Rib except the preparer was much younger and there was a lot more positioning about the sourcing of the ingredients. The result was really little different from any other higher-end Caesar salad we've had with fresh anchovies and sourdough croutons. The exception was the crispy Meyer Lemon slices, a nice enhancement. Then it was time for the steak as we decided to share the $94 New York Strip, a 20-ounce slab of prime dry-aged, bone-in Black Angus prepared medium-rare and sliced Peter Luger-style on a platter. The price point was definitely a reflection of the quality of the meat, and with that expectation in mind, It was quite satisfying. We decided to add the $15 Summer Squash Ratatouille just for the flavor variety. It was a nice melange of squash with an accent of crispy blossoms and a separate saucepan of sauce vierge and melted goat cheese. Finally there was the dessert cart, a throwback to an earlier era of dining where a young couple on a date would try to split a napoleon in half. Not us. Jamie ordered the $20 Meyer Lemon & Lime Tart with an apple filling which was reflected in the exterior made up to look like a glossy Granny Smith apple. I went for the $20 Coconut Passionfruit Gateau which looked like a porcelain egg sprinkled with snowflakes. Both provided a decadent finish to our celebratory meal. No Tyler sightings that evening, but it was a fine venue for refined all-American gluttony.
Be the first to ReplyHigh-end $$, and worth the spend
Miller & Lux is a steak house and quite pricey, however, the day I dined there I wasn't too hungry, and just needed something lite before Jo Koy show at Chase Center so I can't speak of their meat offerings, as I did not venture that way. I shared with my niece Cesar salad; shrimp cocktail; and truffle parmesan fries. All excellent!! Actually, best Cesar salad I've had in a long time, with anchovies and nice dressing!! Yum!! Excellent service too! This place accepts walk-ins for bar dining area and small front patio seating. We waited about 20 minutes for a table and well worth it! Upstairs dining is quite fancy, with view of the Bay, and reservations required there. I will definitely be back for the full dining experience. If you do go, be prepared to spend $$$!!! Tip: Miller & Lux has private entrance into Chase Center. Love that!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional Evening
My cousin and I ate here for the first time and celebrate. After being seated at our table, Tyler Florence greeted us. What a wonderful surprise. We started with the caviar doughnuts—so delicious. I had the salmon—also delicious. I loved the desserts—I enjoyed the raspberry lychee dessert. What exceptional and friendly service. I’d definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Table Side Presentations
My husband and I often talk about how we miss table side Caesar Salads. They used to be available at most upscale restaurants. We were thrilled to have one here. We love the artistry involved, and the result was outstanding. We were further treated to a table side completion of Dover sole. We enjoyed an excellent sauvignon blanc with our meal. My husband is a Dover sole snob, and he rated this the best ever. Other nice touches of we did not partake are champagne and dessert carts. There is a question below asking about unvaccinated guests. Vaccine required: period!
Be the first to ReplyMiller & Lux Amazing Potential by Tyler Florence
I just had dinner at Tyler Florence's new restaurant. We were celebrating my wife's birthday and made reservations a September 27 for October 23, 2021. We arrived 10 minutes early and were told the table was not ready, so they showed us to a bench in a downstairs bar. They were busier to an Eagles concert at Chase. It was dark and somewhat funky as we were sat next to a couple. We talked to them as they were just finishing up dinner and raved about the burger and filet. They loved their meal. Exactly at our assigned time, the concierge/greeter came and got us and wished my wife a happy birthday before taking us upstairs. We were sat next to a pole almost obscured from view. Interesting since there were other options available, and we saw another couple seated in a large booth. Tyler was working the room. The champagne cart came offering some great choices, but we had brought a bottle of red wine, so my wife and I opted out. Although a little pricey, I did order a Manhattan, which was one of the best I have ever had and I think a good value. Most of the dinner went south from there, unfortunately. Many servers constantly checked in on us and doing with water and pouring the red wine. Our original waiter must have left as we were handed off to Deacon(?). He was the best part and most consistent part of our evening. So service was good, but he made it better. The meal itself had loads of potential but for this price point and reputation fell short. We started with the Miller and Lux Cesar Salad. It is made tableside and worth the show, although our salad did not look like others, we had seen prepared by Tyler and other waiters. It was a well-thought-out and tasty salad with all of the components meshing together for a beautiful salad. The waitress who prepared it did explain the elements, and it was delicious. Unfortunately, this is where the meal turned south. We ordered the Tomahawk steak, Thumbelina Carrots, and Potatoe Puree. All the components were delivered at the same time, but they arrived cold. The carrots had terrific flavor, and the potatoes were a creamy puree but cold. They also forgot to deliver the sauces we ordered for our steak, and they were lukewarm at best. The biggest disappointment was the Tomahawk as it was cooked to medium-rare but not warm at all. Since it was my wife's birthday, I was able to get a waiter's attention, and he apologized and immediately got some help and re-fired our meal. Well almost. You see, I knew we had only tasted a couple of pieces of meat before we realized it had been sitting or forgot to be delivered timely. After about 5 minutes, the re-fired/warmed meal arrived. The carrots and the potatoes were hot, and both tasted exceptional. The steak, which is $130, was reheated and brought back at a medium well, which was not the temperature we had requested when ordered. We just decided enough was enough, and we were hungry. The steak had a nice sear, and the flavor was what we would have expected. Again they forgot the sauces which we had to ask for again. They did bring the sauce, and it was hot and the perfect compliment. They did bring an additional sauce which was an excellent accompaniment to the steak. (Recommend Green Pepper and the Targion sauce) Desserts were good, but my wife thought they had potential but almost seemed like they had been out too long on the desert cart. The lime Yuzu tart was the better of the two (St. Honore was pretty good when I used coffee to complement its flavor.) They did bring an amuse-bouche, delicious bites. Another disappointment was that the table next to us, who we talked about some enters we had seen at tables close to or across from us, made a reservation four days before Saturday, had a personalized birthday card given to their member who was celebrating. It was another ah shuck moment that could have made it a more memorable night. In the end, they did not charge us for the sauces. Here are the takeaways: The Cocktail menu is impressive, as is the wine selection. The salad was presented tableside and had all the right ingredients. The steak would be top rate if served correctly. The Dover sole looked terrific, also finished tableside. The Lux Burger was highly rated by patrons as well. The desserts were good but not memorable for a steak house of this quality. So, would I recommend Miller & Lux? I think it could be worth revisiting. I would not recommend the table we were seated at, but other tables were terrific. Several other steak houses in the city( Harris', Epic and Alexanders, etc.) could be better on any given night for the price. Tyler s a fantastic chef and owner and will make this restaurant work like his other in the city. We enjoyed the people watching and had a great conversation with the Foodie Chap, Liam Mayclem, who was at the table next to us.
