Excellent Dinner
This is a first rate and elegant French restaurant in Back Bay. The food is excellent, the cocktails are strong, and service is quite good. Everything I had was terrific: The mussels appetizer, the sole meunière and the chocolate mousse.
Be the first to ReplyExpected fabulous for the price…
Given the prices I expected excellent food and superior service. It’s been a while since I have been here. Food was above average but service was not. Thin crust pizza … average and overpriced. It is large with 6 squares but not worth the price. Salmon and crème brûlée were delicious. Servers were short and rude. Water was filled regularly but that is all. Table was cleared and then Waited At least 15 min from when check was left until they picked it back up again.

This is an excellent French restaurant in Back Bay. The food is superb, with fine options for virtually anybody. My Dover Sole Meunière was first rate, and the chocolate mouse dessert was a great way to end a leisurely meal. Service was friendly and helpful. One note: Mistral can get kind of loud. That is the only negative I can identify, and it is not nearly enough to keep us from returning.

We eat out frequently. When we pay this much for a meal, we expect the food to be outstanding. Our $280 meal for 2 (3 glasses of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 1 dessert) was fine and the service was great. But it did not compare to meals in the last several weeks at 2 other restaurants when each course was fabulous. At this price, fine is not sufficient.

My husband said his entree (one of the steak ones) was fantastic. I had the duck, which was disappointingly a bit dry for me. But the flavor was good. The service was very attentive. My husband said he’d definitely go back to try more of their entrees.

Always a consideration for that special dinner with your spouse. The ambience, cocktails, wine and food choices are excellent. The beef short ribs were outstanding but the roasted 1/2 duck was a bit dry. Our waiter, although professional seemed distant - distinct from our prior visits. On the other hand the hostess and manager were delightful. Overall a very nice experience.
Be the first to ReplyGood but not the jewel I was hoping for
Was seated by very friendly and efficient hostess in a tucked away corner so I wouldn’t feel self conscious about dining alone and appreciated that. Was surprised by the atmosphere for a pricey “French” restaurant- it wasn’t totally cozy, the bar/lounge tables were more “diner” and there was a TV over the bar. Unimpressed by my $18 glass of Bourgogne - maybe the bottle had been open for a bit - but not disappointed enough to complain Caesar salad was nothing special, and was not offered pepper which I think it could have used and a salad fork would have been nice. Tenderloin was good, waiter noted that the presentation would be excellent and it was, flavor and temperature was right on and I’m a sucker for potatoes so whipped potatoes inside another potato didn’t seem French but I liked it. Waiter very nice and answered my questions and made suggestions. Waiter’s assistant was super attentive as well. So definitely not a bad experience but for the money expected it to be a little less rough around the edges - with so many choices in Boston I probably won’t go back.

Dined here in October 2022. Everything about the visit (the food, the service, the atmosphere) was top-notch. The servers were well-informed and professional without being stuffy. The food was incredible. The foie gras parfait was sublime, but all of the dishes we tried (lamb osso buco, tenderloin, linguine, salmon) were excellent. The desserts were also to die for, especially the fuji apple tart. The wine list was outstanding, and the server made several excellent recommendations. Other reviewers have noted the noise, but we had no difficulty with conversation during our dinner (6-8pm). If you like classic French-style food, there is no place better in Boston.

Mistral is an all-round solid experience. The hostesses are welcoming, the wait staff highly attentive and professional, and the food superb. The portions are enormous and every dish was flavorful and well-executed. The foie gras perched on a brioche and embellished with bits of duck confit was especially memorable. There's a great wine list as well.

Good options, good service, and knowledgeable staff. Tables are very close and it’s loud in the restaurant. Seafood options were good and very enjoyable!
Be the first to ReplySuperb but with a caveat
We had been been to Paris earlier this year and wanted to see how a top flight Boston restaurant compared. The answer is pretty well. We started off with a shared appetizer of escargot, which was nothing special. For entrees we had duck breast, Cornish hen, and halibut, with the duck and halibut being rated superb while the Cornish hen was okay. We finished off the meal with creme brûlée, which was okay, and a chocolate torte which was outstanding. The caveat--we arrived at 5:30 PM and it was very pleasant to share the restaurant with a few scattered diners. By the time we left at 7:30 PM, the restaurant was almost full and the decibel count had risen to a level where it was difficult to hold a conversation in normal speaking voices.

We have long enjoyed Mistral for its fabulous food/service and gracious ambience. One of the last remaining dining rooms in Boston for refined service! Or, so we thought… We dined here on a recent Monday evening and were beyond mortified at what it has become! While the setting remains lovely, and the food quite good, for some reason the management has made the decision to pivot the atmosphere into that of a noisy pub. Ughh. So very disappointing. They have now crammed the tables on top of each other - forcing guests to sit on top of the strangers seated on either side. Why on Earth would they now think that customers want to pay these $$$ prices only to be treated as though they are dining at the 99? This jamming of tables sadly translates to a ridiculously loud volume and very compromised service. So disappointing! Not the special occasion setting Mistral once was. Warning… be prepared to shout in order to engage with your dining companion(s). At the time we were being seated for dinner at 6PM, the dining room was empty. We quickly noticed this new (overstuffed) table situation and asked for a table in a corner. The host informed us they were “all reserved”. Seriously? How does one obtain that special service I wonder. Not okay to charge guests these types of prices and treat them like herded cattle. Does a huge disservice to your talented culinary staff too! Sorry to see Mistral go by the wayside.
Be the first to ReplyBoston’s #1 for a Fine Night Out
Mistral is one of Boston's top restaurants. In a city where really great restaurants are a bit further between than one might wish. I went here for my birthday and had a wonderful time. The ambience is great, the staff drilled, precise and knowledgeable. This is the place you take people you love and care about. Food held the highest standard, and it is obvious that their kitchen is well ran. I would especially point out the Dover Sole, the Crab Ravioli, and the Duck main course. This might just be as good as it's going to get in Boston. Always a pleasure to dine at Mistral.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing!!
My adult daughter and I treated ourselves to dinner here while visiting Boston. Our service and our meal were both just simply amazing! The ambience is fine-- elegant, but not any more so than many fine restaurants. The service and meal; however, were definitely out of this world. In fact, a week later, my daughter is still dreaming of her tenderloin. This is saying something as we are from the midwest and know a good steak when we taste one. I had the halibut over asparagus risotto and it was probably one of the best seafood dishes I've had in a very long time! We each had a glass of wine and were pleased to fine options at nice price levels. The desserts were a perfect way to end our evening. Our server and his helper (water person) were both very attentive and made us feel very welcome. In short, Mistral was the highlight of our culinary experiences in Boston and I would highly recommend it.

We really had wonderful interactions with the staff from start to finish. The host staff were very accommodating and gave us a cozy corner booth. Ask you would expect, our waiter was top-notch. He made great suggestions throughout including introducing us to the perfect wine to compliment our meal. my wife doesn't eat meat, however, she could not resist indulging in the fore gras. For
