I love Moody Tongue--definitely a gem nestled right next to the junction of Lake Shore Drive. Their interior design is 100%. A moody, dark, old-time police station or detective like lounge. This brewery expanded their bar to serve high quality beautiful American contemporary fare. I highly recommend their 12 layer chocolate cake made in house. Their chocolate cake is light, fluffy and decadent. I highly recommend their Pecan I cocktail. Aaron our bartender is hilarious and the rest of the staff members are super friendly. Definitely will be coming back.

We dined here during restaurant week and were impressed but not blown away. The service was phenomenal! We were celebrating our anniversary and received complimentary beverages. This was a really sweet gesture and we really appreciated it! Our server went above and beyond to ensure we had a great evening! I really enjoyed all of the dishes I ordered. I had with the Foie Gras, Steak, and Lemon Tart. The steak was amazing and perfectly cooked. The Foie Gras was interesting, but not something I would find myself ordering again. The Lemon Tart was good, but perhaps a bit too sour for my liking. The loss of a star comes from my date's meal. He ordered the chicken, and it was quite dry. I tried it myself and was surprised that it was not cooked well. For being such a highly regarded establishment, we would have expected that to not be overlooked. Overall, we had a memorable time! It's not my favorite restaurant in Chicago by any measure, but I would recommend it to a beer lover who appreciates the finer things!

No specials running, but they did include a nice hand-written note on the table and a rose at the end of dinner. We arrived about an hour early for our reservation but there was ample free parking on the surrounding streets, so no need to worry about that part if you're planning. They don't turn on the TVs in the bar area upon request. Hostesses were polite and the coat check was complimentary. The bar tenders were marginally off-putting since they were on their phones a lot and did not mention their names. We had ordered the beer pairing with our Dining Room experience so we opted for mocktails - which were divine, but extremely over-priced at $32 after tax & tip for 2 drinks. We noticed a few folks being taken on a tour, so we asked and were told that it would be best to wait until after dinner so we'd have ample time - no problem, but would have been nice to know it was available given that we arrived an hour early - hostess should have suggested it. You're seated a few minutes before the start time for the Dining Room. The room was a bit chilly when we were seated, but warmed up to a comfortable temp around the 3rd course or so. The food was special, and the beer pairings were immaculate. The servers were kind, and willing to answer any questions, but did seem to be a bit rushed. Some were easier to understand than others due to ennunciation, but overall it was a pleasant experience. When offered coffee/espresso before the desert course, it would be nice to know that it would be an additional charge. It was offered and implied to be complimentary, and should be when you're spending over $1200 for a reservation for 2, so it was surprising to receive a bill for it. Some of the beers in the pairing will be re-filled but others were not - it would be nice to know this ahead of time so you know which ones to pace for the amount of courses it's paired with. We did receive a private tour of the facilities after dinner at no extra charge, and it was intimate and delightful, but did not include any time in the kitchen which would have been neat. This was my first experience at a Michelin star restaurant, and overall I would do it again; maybe even just for the langoustine dish that I'm still having flash-backs about.

Went for restaurant week with several friends: ( hopefully the regular course menu is better) Overall the meal was very tasty. The one thing that I noticed was that each dish had a sweet element that I personally wasn't a huge fan but it still complemented each dish. We managed to order a majority of the restaurant week options between the four of us so we all got to have tastes. The New York strip was unimpressive (standard steak house comparable) but the chicken and salmon were delicious. Service overall was a bit slow, it didn't seem like there was an enough wait staff, and our server often skipped over us for other tables. We also all ordered an array of beers and each one had its own unique charm and taste some of which did not pair well with our meals at all. Nonetheless if you're a beer person, def worth trying a flight. The bar area does not feel cramped and tables are situated in a way where other people's conversations aren't a bother and you can't hear one another. Interested in trying their actual course menu because for a 2 star it's relatively affordable.

The pre fixe menu was really a hit parade of some of my favorite ingredients: Dungeness crab, Hokkaido scallop, foie gras, langoustine, A5, etc... Seafood forward until the final proteins and dessert. Solid service. A5 had more connective tissue than I am accustomed to. I was told it's a center cut when I asked about it which I didn't really understand but didn't push. The chicken dish was a very pleasant surprise and my favorite along with the langoustine. My third Michelin 2 star restaurant in a week as part of a foodie run across two cities for me burning off expiring pandemic airline credit. Moody was by far the cheapest and not as over the top so probably more accessible to more American diners though menu did have an Asian feel to me. As a solo diner, the pace was a bit slow as dishes came out at same time for all of us with the same seating time. Made me really appreciate the dinner at another 2 star the night before that personalized scheduling. I feel like I could have gotten through the menu in half the time. If I were in a group or drinking alcohol, it wouldn't have been an issue. If I faced an open kitchen or had bar service, I would have felt the time better spent as well.

Came here with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary and we opted for the tasting menu with beer paring. I can see how they received two Michelin stars because WOW. The staff was attentive and knowledge about every since course and the pairing. The food was just outstanding. Every course had us in awe. I don't even know what else to say other than WOW. What a great experience. Thank you for making it a perfect night. We will be back!

We had a few options, but I'm so so so glad we settled on Moody Tongue. The dishes were all outstanding; Moody Tongue is just straight up one of my favorites just purely thanks to the taste of each dish. It's one of those places where you just really can't go wrong because everything just all tastes so good. Also definitely get the beer pairing; there were so many unique flavors that accompanied each dish, and it all truly elevated the experience by that much. Definitely worth it. The service is attentive and outstanding, as they often are at these restaurants. The dining room is lovely with ample table space for all your drinks, comfy chairs, and good table-to-chair ratios.

Service was attentive, food was good, and the beer was great. Several of us bought some to take home with us. We will be back!

I thought that overall, Moody Tongue was a good, but not great experience. The staff was attentive, as you would e pect from a 2 Star Michellin restaurant. The beer pairings were a positive, as they went very well with each course. Wasn't wowed by the beer for everyday drinking, but the pairing was spot on. Aside from the presentation, the food was good, but nothing memorable. It was nice to satisfy the curiosity and try, but wouldn't necessarily recommend for the price.

My friends and I dined here last week to celebrate several milestones and we couldn't have picked a better choice! From the beginning to the end service was impeccable--shoutout to Ryan---and the food was delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will dine here again!
Be the first to ReplyI had the 15-course tasting menu.
Not too full! Everything was great! The tastes were enriching. But the Pot de Crรจme and milk chocolate mouse were a bit too sweet.
Be the first to ReplyCame for restaurant week! This place is so nice and fancy.
They even wipe the crumbs off your table for you lol the food is small portion but it's delicious. Service was great! Will definitely come back to try the regular menu

It was our first time here and we didn't even know it was a two-star Michelin restaurant. We decided to stop here under a friends recommendation and we just so happened to get there one hour before closing. They were so kind to fit us in for dinner and drinks in The Bar area. We cannot say enough how much we enjoyed the dishes and drinks we experienced. Decent prices were a surprise given its Michelin status. We had the Butter Poached Maine Lobster and the Maine Diver Scallops. So delicious! Our friends also enjoyed their meals and shared a couple flights of their IPAs. We hope to come back to experience more delicious food and drinks!

Moody Tongue was on our list of Michelins we wanted to try and finally got the chance during a weekend in Chicago. We ordered:Oysters - a little too acid forward at first but the second one was nice and briney - loved the pop of salt from the roe. Scallops - wished they had a bit more of a crust on them but enjoyed the spice. The cabbage bits were a little slimy. Flavor was good but needed more variation in texture. Agnolotti - Excellent. Best savory dish of the night. I had not had a good pasta dish in a while and this was perfectly balanced. Between the creaminess in the sauce, the vegetal peas, crispy/fatty bacon and delicate agnolotti this was a winner. Iberico - Smoky goodness. Greens and polenta were great. I loved that the pork was almost steak-like. My only complaint would be that I wished there were more onions. Duck - It was a little over cooked. Enjoyed the corn pudding/bread. The baby corn, green beans and pears were also very good. Cheesecake - My second favorite part of the meal. Very very balanced and not too heavy or sweet for dessert. Absolutely loved the salted pineapple sorbet. As for all the beers we tried, we enjoyed the stout but unfortunately the rest were below average. You can find much better beer all over Chicago and the suburbs. Go here for food but don't expect a great beer experience.

**BAD FOOD, WORSE SERVICE; DON'T GO IF YOU HAVE ANY SELF-RESPECT**After going to every Michelin starred restaurant in Chicago, I thought I'd experienced the full spectrum of culinary genius to culinary bullshit. I was wrong.Worst meal of my life, bar none. Would rather eat putrid skunk gonads than another course at this appalling shrine to mediocrity.Every course was poorly conceived and badly executed. The isolated components of each dish ranged from too bland to overpowering salty, excruciatingly acidic to tooth-rottingly sweet to plainly disgusting. In concert, the effect was one of confounding inadequacy.Fine. Sometimes food is just bad (even food that costs over $500 pp!). But when the servers subsequently insult your palate, your memory, and your intelligence--loudly and aggressively--then call for the manager, who says some BS like "we know this meal is economically challenging"....Haha. Ironically, we went to Moody last year, had a great meal, and recommended it very vocally to our friends. Safe to say that will no longer be the case.
Be the first to ReplyPrevious two times, services were bad, food was good.
This time, food was terrible, waiters were pushing, rude, not well-trained, and the manager was insulting! They don't even deserve a review star let alone two Michelin stars. Will never go back!!

Service is very bad; beer is sub-par and food has very limited vegetarian options. Bar tenders lack ability to pour beer into glasses properly or let alone understand what drinks to recommend, you've been warned.

I almost don't want to leave a good review so that it stays more hidden and we can get in when we want. Staff is awesome the beer is great and the food is even better. Quite possibly my favorite spot in the city.

It's restaurant week here in Chicago! That means some of Chicago's best restaurants are providing limited-time options that are more affordable than their normal offerings. Naturally, my fellow college roommates and I had to take advantage. Moody Tongue first gained recognition after its extensive tasting menu concept received two stars from the Michelin Guide in 2021. Looking to uphold his stellar reputation, executive Chef Jared Wentworth has crafted a $55, three-course meal for restaurant week that draws upon many of the same contemporary American elements as his Dining Room tasting menu counterpart. We ordered every dish on the Restaurant Week Menu: Pastrami Pickled Beets, Confit Berkshire Pork Belly, Pei Mussels Rasam, Slagel Family Farm Half Chicken, Roast Lion's Mane Mushroom, Roast Ora King Salmon, Chocolate Peanut Butter Roulade Cake, and CheesecakeAppetizers:The tastiest dish was the Pastrami Pickled Beets. It had an intense tang that paired perfectly with the mellow flavors from the whole mustard seeds and white onion puree. Texturely, this dish also stood out, as the beets were snappy and the sourdough crisps provided a pleasant textural contrast to the smooth fondue. The two other dishes were equally delicious. First, the mussels. Each bite was wonderfully tomatoey and herby. The pita served as a delightful vehicle to contain the heavier flavors of the sauce and mussels. Next, the pork belly. The meat, served atop a fluffy pumpkin risotto, was tender, fatty, and salty. The dish was smaller in size, which made sense, considering its overall decadence. Main Course:The three main courses were great, but certainly not as interesting as the appetizers. Both the chicken and salmon were cooked to perfection, but their flavors were rather conventional. That being said, the sauces and vegetables in each dish managed to outshine their protein partners. The chestnut mushrooms from the half chicken were buttery and the lentils from the salmon had intense spice that left me craving more. The remaining entree, the roast mushroom, utilized a savory mole to bind the contrasting vegetables under a united umbrella of umami goodness.Desert:I was only able to try the cheesecake, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Each component was presented separate from the others--a deconstructed take on the traditional cheesecake. While each part offered essential contributions to the dish as a whole, I felt some were rather one-dimensional. Specifically, the cheesecake filling had a perfectly creamy texture, but lacked a pungent chai flavor, which I would have appreciated.Overall, my experience at Moody Tongue was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in recent memory. The service was phenomenal (the waiter kept our drinks filled at all times) and the decor provided a chic backdrop for the meal.

Definitely an experience that I recommend other to enjoy, not only the venue is very welcoming, bring friends, family or even a business meeting is recommended, not a loud place at times but the beer is amazing little places can compete against this concept, this is one of the places I always love going back to
Be the first to ReplyMoody Tongue totally lived up to the hype.
We over-ordered. I get annoyed that all these nice places just say "oh these are small plates, you have to order more but we also made the plates more expensive." So we had a spattering of the small plates at the top plus two entrees. But the food is super rich as well so we definitely did not need a second entree. We started with the rabbit cavatelli, berkshire pork belly, hamachi crudo, and hokkaido french toast. We also got a lobster app as well but I can't eat shellfish. I was told the shellfish were the best apps. The crudo was really good too, maybe my favorite. Same with the pork belly. This wasn't overly fatty pork belly, rich yes, but it was so incredibly flavorful. We got the Iberico pork and the Duck breast entrees. Surprisingly, I would say teh duck breast was the worst thing we had through the whole meal. We all loved the Iberico pork though. Everything was just very well done.I've candidly had better beers. They really like to get creative and I'll never again see a white truffle pilsener. It was like a creamy champagne that was actually beer. Wild. The peated scotch is also great but so incredibly peaty. Small volume would be best.

This is my third time coming to Moody tongue, but my first time actually dining here. The first two times were drinks only, with one of visits at their location in Pilsen. The service here is phenomenal. Every time I've came, I've always received consistent stellar service. The beer is honestly what has always driven me back. And after they received their Michelin two star rating, I knew I had to check out their food. We started off with their Luizzi Burrata. It was served with squash, pomegranate, pickled apple, arugula, and pomegranate molasses. This was tasty, a lot different than any other burrata I have ever tried. I just washed they would have provided some bread to eat with. My wife ordered their Maple Leaf Duck Breast. It was served with Beluga lentils, sweet potato purรฉe, squash and Foie emulsion. ย The duck was cooked perfectly. It was so juicy and tender and went perfectly with the sweet potato purรฉe and the Foie emulsion gave it additional flavor. I'm not a big fan of lentils but these were pretty good. I ordered their Acornseekers Iberico Pork. This one was served with apple, parsnip purรฉe, pickled grape relish, potato rosti, and pork miso gastrique. The pork just like the duck breast was very flavorful and tender. Although the pork could stand on its own, the fruits really highlighted the flavors of the pork. We of course finished our meal with their 12 Layer German Chocolate Cake. This thing had chocolate buttercream, espresso speckled cheesecake, toasted pecan, and coconut caramel. This is not you're ordinary German chocolate cake. This thing is on a whole 'nother level. If you come here, please save room for dessert. You won't regret it! I'll definitely be returning.
