It is such a landmark! If you don't mind the wait outside and like to meet new people from all over the country, this is the place to go. You will share more than a table as you share food and life stories with those seated at your table. Great souther staples in the menu served family style.

Food was amazing! Worth every minute of standing in line, everything is already set out on the table for you as soon as you are seated. Fried chicken, fried okra, collard greens, EVERYTHING was amazing. It's a family style restaurant that feels like being at a Sunday family dinner. I could not recommend this place enough.

As has been previously stated bring cash and get there early. We got there at 10:20 on a Friday and didn't get seated til 12. Not much to do in line except for people watching. Other than the line to the restaurant was a pretty quiet street. It was encouraging to see that people could barely walk when they left the restaurant. Easy to find, just look for the long line. Served family style with the food already at the table when you are seated. Over 20 side dishes, fried chicken, pulled pork. I was so excited I forgot to take pictures. Best fried chicken I can remember. The sides were okay, perhaps I didn't pay too much attention to the sides after eating so much chicken. Skip the desserts, stick to the chicken. Would get there before 10:20

This was our first time here, even though I had lived in Savannah for several years, for some reason I never made the time to check this place out even though I heard fantastic reviews. Well, it did not disappoint. Make sure you come hungry! We arrived about 1115 and we're in the second seating, only had to wait about 20 minutes. Hostess outside gives a great history of the place while you wait. Once we were seated at a large table with another small group, the spread was laid out before us. As a kid growing up in rural Louisiana, this reminded me of Sunday dinner at my grandmother's house. From the piping hot fried chicken to every delicious southern side dish you could imagine, everything was phenomenal. A few of my favorites were the cabbage, turnip, greens, black-eyed peas, and fried okra. The fried chicken, was some of the best I've ever had. You definitely won't leave here hungry, and save room for dessert! We will definitely be coming back on our next trip.

Came in for lunch and was beyond pleased with the food, the atmosphere and the service. I recommend to arrive before they open because they always have a long line - but I is worth the wait! It is family style service so you share a large table with other guests. They must have placed over 25 different food items for us to share. I tried to take small portions to be able to try everything, but it was impossible. The fried chicken was amazing well actually everything was delicious. Bring cash because they don't accept any other type of currency.
Be the first to ReplyNothing like a family style restaurant.
As soon as you sit down food is served. Not a few dishes either. A plethora of sides well seasoned along with crispy fried chicken and some cornbread and biscuits. And it's basically all you can eat for a reasonable price. Then they bring out desserts as well. I almost fell asleep at the table.. lol!!. I would visit this place every visit to Savannah.
Be the first to ReplyLoved this place.
You definitely have to get there early to wait in line! Love the family atmosphere. They make you feel like this is their home and you are just over for supper. The food is all waiting at the table when you sit down. So many sides I couldn't even count. Highlights for me were the creamed corn, fried okra, and okra and tomatoes. Chicken was delicious and they also served a roast and pulled pork. Save room for the little dessert at the end!

Simply the best Southern food you'll ever have, in a family style setting. If you come within 50 miles in this place, you must go.
Be the first to ReplyIt's all true; the food is that good and it is cash only
It's all true; the food is that good and it is cash only just as The Good Lord intended (taxation is theft). More importantly, let's talk about the rain or shine WAIT and how to appropriately do so: Get in line an hour before they open OR don't bother coming. Seriously. Assuming you do, have coffee, bottled water, an umbrella, some deodorant, sun visor, face wipes, dry shampoo and maybe a banana or an apple with you: It is a LONG wait on a sidewalk with absolutely nothing comfortable nearby. Electing someone to stand in line for your party will result in your party not getting seated. Furthermore, the waiting in line is part of the process: This is when all of the socializing and mingling takes place as once you are inside, it's all business (more about that later). Did I mention a long wait? In a line? On a sidewalk, elbow to bum hole? Good. With that in mind, this is not a place for kids under 12. There are marrywanna seegars, beer funnels and the occasional debauchery one may associate with a frat house. The neighborhood itself is an AirBNB hot spot for sex, drugs and rock n roll. If the thought of your grandma reliving the first time she saw Mick Jagger frightens you, it's possible this Waffle House patrons after a bar night line isn't for you. Most people are dressed in a "come as you are" outfit; Some ran out of their hotel with wet heads and in stretchy pants while others clearly partied all night and this is the final stop before retiring to sleep off their espresso Martinis turned Jager Bombs: Just congratulate the bride-to-be and hand her maid of honor $10 to cover the flamboyant male stripper who is still clearly working but is now well into OT. Mingle in the line. No one is dressing up to come here. There are people from all 4 corners of the globe of a wide demographic and you all share the common trait of FOOD being your love language. Otherwise you wouldn't wait 2 hours. We had front row seats of a man busting his wife coming out of one of the AirBNB's across the street. I don't partake in the devil's lettuce however it was plentiful and peacefully offered and passed around. A lady with a Shitti insulated backpack on had everything from Jello Shots to Jameson Picklebacks for $2 cash. Some older guy had a baby doll in a stroller and offered the booger sugar for $20. Cash only. There were tobacco smokers and sweed smokers and then *bam* a toddler appeared. I cannot stress this enough: The line the neighborhood and the wait is not kid friendly. Get a sitter! When the line does move, it does so in increments of 10 every 3 minutes. One thing about Mrs Wilkes is they know how to pack the house and turnover tables which are, again, 10 tops. You will be herded inside like cattle, table set with food already placed and instructed to eat. And eat you will: This is not the time for talking, we already did that outside. For 2 hours. You're given 20 minutes, 25 at most, to pass dishes, funnel the greatness into your face and after one opportunity for any food or drink refills, your wait staff appears with dessert selections. Grab two. Inhale those. Take your dishes to the window, leave a $60 cash with the cashier and get on back to wherever you will be sleeping the experience off. HECK YES I recommend this place. If you do nothing else in Savannah this is wholly worth the travel to experience.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a legendary place when coming to Savannah.
You'll know you're in the right place when you see a ridiculous long line for lunch. I recommend coming early before they open which is 11 am. It's normal to stand in line for over an hour or more. It depends on when you got there. It's $30 with tax included for all you can eat southern food. Cash or check only. Once it's your turn, you and your group sit at a table and share with another group of strangers. If you're a social person then you'll have no problem starting up a conversation. Food portions are generous since you're sharing and passing it around. Just to clarify, they do not rush you. You simply just eat until you're full then they bring you dessert at the end. I loved the tea, it was not too sugary. I would say they had the best fried chicken I've ever tasted. Very succulent and moist inside. Skin is full of flavor from the seasonings. I loved the food overall and wished I could come here often.

Got in line around 10:30 and waited about an hour and a half to be seated, but there is a full table of food waiting for you once you sit down. There were so many yummy things to try and I had so much fun enjoying the meal with other diners, I was actually there solo as my friend had to leave Savannah early, and I'd say it's the perfect place for a solo meal since you're seated with others anyway! The fried chicken was obviously great, other favorites were the cole slaw, the collard greens, and the pickled cucumbers! Make sure you're ready for a wait (I don't understand the people who get in line not knowing what they signed up for and then complain the whole time), but it will be so worth it in the end!
Be the first to ReplyWe went there during the pandemic.
Best food and fried chicken I ever had. They gave us enough food we had to give away most of it to homeless people. The whole thing costed $25.00. The most amazing restaurant for southern food I've ever visited them. If you go to Savannah and don't eat there. Shame on you
Be the first to ReplyThis place was awesome.
Everything was delicious. There was so much delicious food that no one could finish what we had in front of us. We also ate family style with 8 other strangers. It was a great experience. The fried chicken was some of the best I have ever had. My wife's two favorite things were the squash and creamed corn. She normally does not like these. I am glad we went. I am sorry we did not go earlier as we would have eaten here twice this week. It is well worth the 1.5 hour wait.
Be the first to ReplyFood was good but not AMAZING.
Reason why I still gave it 5 stars is because of the entire experience. It gave me feeling of warmth and comfort. As someone who is extremely antisocial/introvert, I thought I would hate sharing a table with strangers but I enjoyed it. I loved the candied yam, fried chicken, biscuits, mac n cheese, beef stew and iced sweet tea. Also loved the banana pudding. Some may find the sweet tea to be bland but there's a tray of sugar on the table, so feel free to add another 2 packs of sugar. NOTE: Party of 3 - arrived around 10:30AM before opening and had to wait another 30min after opening. *Make sure to get there before opening!!* BRING CASH!!! $30pp I will definitely stop by whenever I'm in Savannah again :)

An incredible meal and fabulous fried chicken! We got there early (10:30AM) and waited for them to open at 11. Everything was delicious! All the sides and even the iced tea was great. We ate with 6 others, 4 of whom had been there several times. Overall a wonderful meal! I was too busy to take any pictures of the beginning, sorry!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful on so many levels.
Food, service, price, ambiance-the real deal.
Be the first to ReplyI definitely feel like the minority with this review but
I definitely feel like the minority with this review but other then at ambiance and atmosphere I really wasn't super impressed with the food. I thought the concept was super unique and fun. I loved the family style component with all of the dishes just waiting for you at the table and being able to try a bunch of different sides. Waited in line for just a little under 2 hours and we got there at about 10:30am. The chicken was good but nothing to write home about. The far majority of the sides in my opinion were lacking seasoning and flavor. My favorite sides were the stuffing, sausage and rice, and coleslaw. The other sides were very mediocre. The sweet tea was delicious though. I think it's definitely a cool place to experience if you find yourself in Savannah but I probably wouldn't wait in line again.
Be the first to ReplyReally wish I'd read the reviews more in depth before going
Really wish I'd read the reviews more in depth before going so I knew we had to get in line early. Arrived around 11:45 and were SHOCKED to see a line down the block. We did end up waiting about an hour and 10 minutes, but took turns standing in line and going to shops within the 2 block area. One of the owners came out to talk to everyone a few times while we waited and offered free biscuits while telling the back story of the real Mrs. Wilkes. We met some great people in line and ended up at the same table with them. I thought I'd hate the family style dining with complete strangers but it wasn't bad at all. Once the food was on the table (immediately) everyone just passed bowls and plates and got to eating.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic place to eat if you love southern cooking.
Biscuits are melt in your mouth and chicken amazing. Get there early as always a line.
Be the first to ReplyMs Wilkes have the best soul food ever and I always enjoy
Ms Wilkes have the best soul food ever and I always enjoy eating at her establishment her hours are short because the lines are really long because the food is so so delicious and it's made with love those people sweat hard to get that good Southern Soulful cookie out to you I will highly recommend if you were visiting Savannah that you try Miss Wilkes restaurant you will be highly impressed and it'll leave your palate happy and you will be eager to try more
Be the first to ReplyWe've been going to Mrs.
Wilkes for years, always planning a stop on our way to or from the beach. The last time we visited was in January 2021 during Covid when they were only doing takeout. I remember talking to the owners (who gave us way more food than we ordered) and they seemed genuinely concerned about their future. So we were relieved to visit today and see that our favorite Savannah spot is back and as good as ever. The fried chicken, butter beans, black eyed peas and biscuits were terrific, as always. Nature is healing itself -- Mrs. Wilkes is back!!
Be the first to ReplyVery interesting experience with great food.
It's served family style and you will sit with strangers. We found it a pleasurable experience. It's all you eat and bring cash because they don't do credit cards

This is a must!!!!! Awesome! The picture is all you need to see about the great food!!!! They are only open 11-2. You need to get in line by 10:15 (we were # 11. & 12) You are seated community style at tables of 10 so you meet some new people as seen in the picture, our table consisted of 4 different parties. Note: $30pp , CASH ONLY, includes your meal, iced tea, dessert and tax. The menu is set and your meal is on the table when you are seated ready to enjoy with your new friends. You can tip the room when you cash out. Great experience and food!
Be the first to ReplyBest. Food. In. Savannah. This is a family style
Best. Food. In. Savannah. This is a family style restaurant, the only wait is outside the restaurant, once you are in all of the food is laid in front of you already. And it is delicious! So is the desert. Worth the wait but honestly we only ended up waiting around 20 minutes and the line was fairly long. Great great great place absolutely recommended!

Really good food and there's a lot of it, so make sure to go hungry! And bring cash! ATM wasn't working when we went and the nearest one was a short walk away. Bit of wait outside beforehand, but there's plenty of shade and some areas to sit. One employee came outside and talked to us and taught us some history before entering.
