I’ve been to Nobu in London, New York and Ibiza. Nobu Warsaw is the same food but falls a very long way short in terms of service and overall guest experience.
We went for my wife’s birthday and the evening started inauspiciously when our extremely young waiter rather snobbishly asked if we’d been to Nobu before. We told him yes and then he departed our table. So began 10 minutes of waiting for menus. Perhaps if you say you haven’t been to Nobu before you get served more quickly? We received our menus and another 10 minutes passed before he returned to take out drinks order. We asked for a bottle of Dom Perignon but our waiter didn’t know the vintage - he had to depart for another 5 minutes to check. When we finally got our champagne I indicated my wife would like to taste. He ignored me and proceeded to fill all our glasses with a trembling hand. Fortunately the champagne was fine, but what kind of high-end restaurant sells you a bottle of 2011 Dom Perignon Brut for €375 and doesn’t even let you taste it?
The food was ok, but not to the standard of other Nobu restaurants. Chicken skewers (kushiyaki) were rather dry and chewy. Perhaps the greatest crime was the shrimp in tempura with creamy-spicy sauce (popcorn shrimp), served smothered in the sauce rather than to the side for dipping, meaning the tempura swiftly became soggy. Black cod miso was good although my wife’s was a little burnt at the edges.
As this was a birthday I asked for a small cake and candles (as we have had in London and New York previously). This never arrived despite me reminding the lady who checked our reservation. I went to complain and was told this only happens if you order a dessert. “It’s not free” she said. Who said anything about the wanting it for free? I just wanted it to happen. No apology was offered, no attempt to rectify the problem. It was apparently all my fault for not ordering a dessert. Great service I must say. This would never happen in other high-end restaurants. Clearly the customer is never right and always wrong.
After we paid the bill and started to leave (vowing never to return) the assistant manager arrived with ice cream-filled mochi, candles and champagne, as well as a small gift. He was very apologetic and clearly wanted us to forget all about what had happened. This was very much appreciated, but it hasn’t changed our minds that Nobu Warsaw just isn’t worth the time or money.
