What an amazing experience.
I booked a seat for lunch which is a tasting menu. I arrived and was sat almost immediately. There's only 14 seats at the bar. Six of us sat at 2:15 pm. The staff, was very professional and the chef and his sous chef worked in silence. They worked really well together. Every dish was complex with multiple things in it. Once greeted, I got water and was asked if I'd like anything to drink. The server had a couple of great recommendations. I ordered a delicious dry sake. Then, one by one, the dishes came. I can't even name half the things because they were all complex dishes. But the soup with the sea bream and the sashimi were my favorite. I think a picture is with a thousand words, so I'll post those dishes. The service was wonderful! And I even loved the toilets, with a sophisticated bidet. Overall, great experience and I totally get why they have 2 Michelin stars

Ambiance: Intimate beautiful setting in a cool bar area with front row seats to watch them prepare our meals. Service: Okay. They only had 1 server to accommodate all of the guests, around 10 or so of us. And he was spread a bit thin. Not enough time for attention to detail for each guest in a Michelin star restaurant. Also I noticed the chef had a habit of resetting his chopsticks to prepare the food by tapping them against the prep table every time. I didn't think that was very sanitary considering this was a 2 Michelin star establishment. Food Pros: I was overall satisfied with my meals and everything was generally good and creative. My favorite was the strawberry sakura dessert, a light end to my experience. It wasn't too sweet but very flavorful and creative. The rice dish was my second favorite and I appreciated the refills, I was too full to need any, but it's nice for others. And third favorite, was the seasoned sashimi. Least favorite was the Spanish mackerel with broccolini and gellee. The fish was good by itself, but it came paired with a side of vegetables and gel topping that was very overpowering. It was a lot of flavors in one dish, that I couldn't help but wanted it a bit simpler. Cons: No surprise dish or wow factor. Maybe it was the shabu shabu. But because I'm Asian that eats hot pot all the time, it wasn't enough of a wow factor for me, but it might be for others. No special gifts or candies/chocolates in the end or a printed menu which I always appreciate to have after my meal. I want to have a reminder of what I ate. I noticed they change their menu often, so I wonder what dishes they had before because I don't see why this was awarded 2 stars.
Be the first to ReplyIt's very amazing Japan restaurant I never seen.
I love the service here is was great and the food is good. we went there on lunch time with 5 courses. Everything the chef make is fresh and look beautiful. And yum

I went to Odo for lunch, and I'd say that the portion they gave is enough to leave you full for dinner. The entire time I was here, the chefs have been busy preparing for my food, and the pace they are in is timed right so that you will get specific course at specific time after you finish your last course. I really enjoyed that the food here tastes similar to a delicious home-cooked meal. My favorite is the duck with truffles and persimmons, as it was a combination of smoky from the truffles and meat and lightly sweet and cool jelly texture from the persimmons. The wagyu beef with soba noodles is a nice mixture of warm soup along with chilled noodles. Additionally, the chirashi is nice and crispy with each ingredient retaining its taste and playing a significant role into the chirashi's overall taste. The uni and caviar is not that memorable, as it isn't the best uni dish that I've had, but it is soft and don't have an overpowering taste. The fish soup with vegetables is nice and refreshing, though the bit of citrus aftertaste is a bit unnecessary. Last but not least, I really enjoy the strawberry ice cream, as the strawberry is fresh and not too sweet nor sour. Service is okay. My server is nice, though even though I had water, she reminded me to provide a tip. My jacket got dirty between the time I hand out my jacket for storage to when I was leaving, so I guess they need to either clean their place better or have a better handling of their customer's belongings. Overall, food is 8.2/10, rounded up for the value.

Regrettably, I experienced severe health issues shortly after my meal, which have been medically confirmed as food poisoning. This unfortunate incident has compelled me to question the food safety standards and customer service practices at your Michelin-starred restaurant. Customers of a Michelin-rated restaurant expect not just an exceptional culinary experience but also high standards of food safety and respectful treatment. Sadly, my experience fell short of these expectations. Moreover, the level of service I encountered during my visit did not reflect the care and professionalism one would anticipate.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed.
Food was horrible very very bad. Crab was frozen, sashimi was ok, Soup was nothing taste, Soba was not enough cooked. also, they said white truffle but it was summer truffle. I can't believe. Never come back.
Be the first to ReplyThe whole course is perfect.
I loved them so much. This restaurant is worth for 2-Michelin star restaurant. The service and the environment are gorgeous.

Be the first to ReplyFood is alright but not the way I like.
The service is good and environment is nice. Here the pictures of the dishes. The duck is my favorite. The rest is ok. I only have one bite of the dessert. I am a dessert lover but I didn't really like their dessert. May be just not for me.
Be the first to Replythis review is for their lunch counter seating course.
i've heard of odo back when they had 1 michelin star, but when they got to 2, i felt like I had to give them a try. odo was amazing. every dish was so good and it reminded me of my time in japan. the price of their lunch is so reasonable ($145 at the time of this review). if you're familiar with nyc fine dining, you know duck is commonly used as the protein course for most restaurants and it gets boring. but for odo, the chef paired it with persimmons and black truffles and it was amazing and easily the most memorable duck dish I've had. service was friendly as well but not over the top, which I prefer. definitely need to come back for their dinner course.

It was a high quality of food and delicious like a home town in Japan. The customer service was really as a professional and taking care of people frequently. If you know what is "dashi" this place that you can tasty well. This is 100% you must resavation. They do have a special seat for each person in counter.

excellent balance of tasting. premium food material. great staff.
Be the first to ReplyOdo was a gem during our trip to NYC.
We had been exploring the city and walked on over to Odo. The spot is very unassuming with a lot of little storefront but once you are inside you feel like you've been transported into a small Japanese restaurant. Almost like a speakeasy! We were one of the 10ish guests at the chefs table. The lunch menu is an abbreviated kaiseki but they all tasted great! The best, of course, was the wagyu beef course that was just so flavorful, fatty, and tender. The other courses were all cooked immaculately. The only semi-disappointment was the dessert which felt like soft serve so kind of a sad way to end the meal. Nonetheless a great meal, with great service and worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyI came here for lunch in Oct.
The place was really quiet and had a calm vibe. The food was really good. The appetizer looked like a masterpiece on a seashell. The fish soup and other courses were also super delicious. I wish the softserve was less sweet, or had more strawberry compose which balanced out the sweetness. The waitress explained every course and was really attentive.Overall, it was a nice experience and totally worth it.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful omakase at Odo (visited in Oct 2022).
Simple ingredient but with their magic the food had the most beautiful flavor. We felt our minds were calmed and touched after the meal. Will definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyFeels like eating at a high end Tokyo place.
Great food, great service and very good price especially for lunch. I have eaten there for now about 10 times and always consistently good. I recommend eating at the counter that sits around 13 people. At the counters you can see the two chefs preparing and cooking. Very good wine and sake list as well.

This lovely little Japanese spot sits a bit hidden in flatiron. You may miss it on the street and when you walk in the speakeasy vibe might make you wonder. Rest assured, behind the back door sits a beautiful omakase room. It is quiet, it is clean, it is beautiful. I think this atmosphere is a big part of why they have earned one Michelin star. The service is stellar and the pace of the meal is perfect. The food is very good. Each dish is solid. I could pick apart little things but I won't. Both soup dishes were the highlight. I will do wish there was more sushi. And I feel the lunch course load for the price is maybe one or two courses lacking. Not my favorite Japanese tasting menu in town, but still solid and worth a try. Ps I think they are now open for dinner too.

Whenever I visit New York, I always like to check out at least one Michelin star restaurant. Odo has been on my list for a bit and I'm so glad we finally got to try it. Just based on the food Odo deserves 5 stars! The food was that good. From the first dish to the sashimi to the soup to the A3 & A4 wagyu to the Donabe rice, every dish was outstanding. The toro literally melted in your mouth. We added truffles to the A3 wagyu and they did not hold back. It was like eating truffles with a side of meat. It was our first time having raw egg yolk & soy sauce with meat and we loved the combination. The quality of the A4 wagyu was amazing and it melted in your mouth. The dessert of ice cream with a watermelon sauce was fantastic and nothing like we had eaten before. We were thinking about this meal days after. I do wish the ambiance was a little better. It was so quiet that we sometimes felt uncomfortable speaking above hushed voices, maybe some background music could help. Also would have loved a copy of a written menu since the explanation of the food was sometimes quick & confusing. But we're going for the food and I would highly recommend Odo for a fantastic Kaiseki dinner experience!
Be the first to ReplyEverything you'd expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant.
I sat at the chef's counter, which was astonishingly quiet and orderly. I was able to whisper to the other people in my party. Each dish was as delicious as the last, with the real highlights being truly special. Our first course was an out-of-this-world miso steam egg with uni and caviar. It achieved a level of balance that is incredibly hard to find. Hands-down everybody's favorite was the cubes of A5 Wagyu steak cooked to absolute perfection. It was my first experience with Wagyu and it exceeded all expectations. Absurdly delicious. Service was as good as service could possibly be. The only area I found lacking was the drink selection. Two of us got the sake flight and I was a bit let down by the presentation. All three sakes were served at once, rather than paired with the correct dishes, which meant that all made it to room temp by the time any were finished; and we had no idea if we were meant to drink them each to completion or all together or what. They also didn't do the best job at explaining each one. They told us the idea of each (this is a clean sake with some fruity notes) but nothing of their origin, how they were made, and only surface level tasting notes. Still the food was masterful and service impeccable. The place is pretty hard to find, which honestly inhibited the experience for us. Well worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyA perfectly homely meal that will leave you full.
We enjoyed dinner at Odo. Service was attentive without being overbearing. It was nice seeing the chef at work, and the smoke and fire in the kitchen. Everything was nicely cooked, showcasing the ingredients in a minimalist way. I appreciated that nothing was too flashy. One star off for the experience at the door. The male bartender at the outer bar was rude and condescending. Upon entering, we asked if this was Odo, and he yells at us. What a turn off.

Let's start by making one thing clear: Kaiseki is not the same as omakase. You can always tell the true foodies from the posers (there are so many in NYC) by whether they: 1) Know what kaiseki is; 2) Have had true kaiseki; and 3) Don't use kaiseki and omakase interchangeably.Odo is a true kaiseki restaurant that--thankfully--refuses to dumb itself down for the omakase sheep. Sadly reduced to serving just lunch due to pandemic-era issues, it is nevertheless one of the few kaiseki restaurants on this coast that actually understands what kaiseki is and does it well. Every one of our courses was designed to showcase the breadth of Japanese culinary mastery and the diversity of seasonal Japanese produce. I'm annoyed that the manager never emailed me a copy of the menu he promised me (he said they didn't have printed copies), so I'll do my best to detail what we got from memory:#1: Chawanmushi with caviar - Deliciously comforting and served at the perfect temperature.#2: Kinmetai Soup - Slightly oily but in all the right ways due to the seared fish, and chock full of seasonal vegetables.#3: A4 Seared Wagyu beef with white asparagus - Can't remember the two sauces that were served with it, but they were a bit too salty. The beef was good enough on its own.#4: Chirashi - Served with bluefin tuna and another cut of fish that I forget. Light, easy, simple, and fresh.#5: Housemade buckwheat soba with seared duck breast and eggplant - I normally don't like shoyu broth, but this had a particular dimension that was compelling. The duck was perfectly cooked, and the soba were incredibly chewy (and I'm not the biggest soba fan either).#6: Dessert - Hokkaido milk soft-serve ice-cream with fresh strawberry sauce. A bit disappointingly simple, but well made--especially that sweet, sweet Hokkaido milk flavorOdo isn't the best kaiseki I've ever had, but it does a good job in a city that--for all its world-class dining--is woefully bereft of this highest level of Japanese cuisine (seriously, why do omakases dominate when kaiseki is literally haute cuisine?).
Be the first to ReplyWent here before they became more of a kaiseki place.
I liked the balance of the courses and remember the dishes more for the presentation and balance more so than the sushi. I completely understand why they are more kaiseki focused, they are simply better at presenting cooked seasonal dishes. Worth a stop.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible kaiseki.
Intimate atmosphere. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Expert chef preparations. If I could afford it, I would eat here once a week!

Odo is an excellent kaiseki restaurant that showcases a number of Japanese foods and preparations. The restaurant is intimate, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the chefs brilliantly execute the menu.I typically visit omakase sushi restaurants and had never visited a kaiseki restaurant before. While I had seen pictures on Instagram of the changing menu over the past few months, I was not sure what to expect. Odo is a kappo restaurant. Kappo is a multi-course meal that can feature a number of foods including sashimi, sushi, tempura, and meat. It is also characterized by the casual setup of the restaurant and emphasizes the proximity between the diner and the chef who cuts and cooks the food before the diner's eyes.I visited Odo this afternoon for lunch and was treated to a delicious 6-course menu featuring hairy crab+scallop, madai miso soup, A5 Kagoshima Wagyu roast beef, chirashi, cold soba with grilled duck breast, and soft serve ice cream with strawberries. Each dish featured a variety of ingredients and showcased a variety of skills. While I enjoyed each and every course, the chirashi that I was served was one of the most magnificent dishes I have ever eaten. It featured sushi rice topped with chutoro, akami, kakimi (scraped tuna mixed with Japanese mustard), shime saba (pickled mackerel), and suzuki (black bass). Additionally, I'd like to give an honorable mention to the grilled duck breast that topped the house-made cold soba noodles. The char was delicious and the skin had a nice layer of fat underneath.I cannot adequately describe how incredible of a time I had this afternoon. Odo is one of the most spectacular restaurants I have eaten at in New York (and Japan). I was sad when the meal came to a close and look forward to returning for lunch (and hopefully dinner) in the near future. Thank you Brian for your hospitality. 5/5.

We came to try the restaurant week menu, and it was definitely a unique experience. It was a hand roll set that came in a bento box, where each compartment slides out like a drawer. We also had cauliflower soups to start, and cheesecake and chocolate cake for dessert. The food was good but my only complaint was that everything came out a little cold/room temperature. It might have been prepared a while ago, and there didn't seem to be enough servers as service was a little slow.
