For a restaurant in such a prime location - between Kings Cross and St Pancras stations - Rails should be a dining destination of choice. Unfortunately, the choice you should make is to avoid it entirely. Rails is the recently rebranded Plum and Spilt Milk restaurant, which is located in the Great Northern Hotel. This is a review of Rails restaurant, not the hotel. The initial welcome was promising. But we were soon to be underwhelmed. Our server arrived fairly promptly and offered us coffee. We waited approximately 15 minutes for our coffees. By that stage, we had already ordered breakfast - 2 standard items on the menu. Our coffees arrived after we had to ask for them (again). However, our food was nowhere to be seen. After about 40 minutes, we managed to flag down the manager who then disappeared into the preparation area but never returned. A different person arrived with our food - but the ask for well-poached eggs for my wife had been ignored. The server promised he could "return in 2 minutes" but my wife suggested he just leave it, but he was adamant. So, I had finished my food, and then 2 poached eggs arrived for my wife. During this entire time, the restaurant was practically empty. We had to flag down a person for the bill, and after a long while, a server proudly proclaimed that he had given us our 2 coffees. The 12.5% service charge (for non-existent service) was still there. Rails could be a fundamentally different experience, but this establishment has a long way to go to deliver on any promises it makes.
