Gourmet Dry-Aged Steak Heaven!!!
We traveled for business and we tried this restaurant finding it on the internet for best steakhouses in Detroit. The menu features top of the line dry-aged steaks!! They even have a glass-walled dry -aged steak refrigerator downstairs near the bathrooms!! We enjoyed the Grilled Caesar salad for 3 to share. We split the 20 Oz dry- aged Rib eye for two and it was more than enough!! So tender with that dry-aged flavor! The third party enjoyed the 10oz dry-aged Filet mignon which was also amazing!! We had a bottle of red wine and desserts cameā¦ we tried the Baklava Sundae ( melted in your mouth ice cream and honey), the 5 layer chocolate cake (chocolate mousse not too sweet) and the Gooey Buttercake with fresh chopped pineapples on top with a drizzle of vanilla crĆØme anglaise. The desserts were gourmet and made to perfection! The decor was elegant with marble tables - art deco meets industrial. We definitely would love to come back and recommend this strongly for families, business meetings, and hanging out with friends.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic service and meal ! Ask for Brian !!
Went for an anniversary and birthday celebration and the experience did not disappoint. Not just āa steak house - The steakhouseā per our server and he is right. The staff was attentive, the som made a great wine recommendation. Cocktails were wonderful. The bone marrow app was delish as was the p+p salad with a poppy seed dressing. 2 in our party had filets and 3 had bone in rib-eye. Lobster pairing yummy and perfectly cooked.the Oscar and homemade hollandaise topping made a wonderful steak even better. Be prepared ā definitely on the pricier side, but fully worth it. Check out the meat aging room downstairs. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyHigh expectations, come up short
We have lived in the Ann Arbor area for about 3 years. The restaurant seen had gotten boring. You just canāt get the quality, professionalism, and atmosphere you can in a proper restaurant in a city. We havenāt ventured into Detroit that much but had heard great things about prime and proper and decided to give it a shot. We arrived a bit early unsure of traffic. That gave us a chance to sit at the bar for a drink before dinner. First impressions, the host stand was super polite and friendly. We sat at the bar and there were a handful of other there. Interestingly all there by themselves. I thought the cocktail list looked interesting. We each ordered something off the cocktail list both enjoyed. The bartender wasnāt very social and it wasnāt that busy. There seemed to be slot of activity behind the bar. It was a little different with main bar area run by a bartender and things happening behind it. A little hard to explain. The overall atmosphere to be honest was kind of blah. It was very bright, didnāt have any energy, it didnāt have a clear personality. There was the whole dry aging meat downstairs you can see that didnāt really fit with the upstairs atmosphere. It just wasnāt clear. We finished the drinks and went to our table. We decided to sit outside since the weather was quite nice. Victor was our waiter. Highlight of the night. Very personable and knowledgeable. We brought our own bottle of wine but went with another cocktail first. I was looking for something in why wheelhouse but wanted to give the bartender some creative license. I enjoy manhattans and old fashions which I told the server so I wanted something on one of the those family of cocktails. I said maybe if there are some house made syrups or something but let the bartender decide. I was asked if there were any cost limitations and I said donāt go over $25. I was asked if I wanted a āpremiumā cube. Sure, why not. I would actually expect that at a restaurant of this caliber. I was delivered an old fashioned. Basil Hayden bourbon. Not very exciting, pretty basic, not the creativity I was hoping for. Moving on to starts. We had the bone marrow and the tuna. Both were ok. The bone marrow had short rib on it and to be honest the bone marrow was a little lacking. More of a short rib app with bone marrow than a bone marrow app with short rib. The tuna was nothing special. On to main course. I had the New York strip and we split the hash browns and fries. Then steal was good. It comes with a price tag of $85. The hash rows were very good. Comes with a red salsa and over easy egg which was all combined at the table. The fries were pretty good. When we left it just felt we didnāt get our moneys worth. It was good not great the prices would make you expect great, food great everything. Initially I was goi f 4/5. Well a couple weekends later we were in Chicago. Went out to eat a couple times. Night and day difference. Now Chicago compared to Detroit, no contest. But Iād still expect high end restaurants to have certain characteristics in a large city. I wasnāt feeling it. And for the price relative to other big city prices it didnāt stack up. I forgot to mention $50 corkage for the bottle we brought. Now I get the concept of corkage and the restaurant needs to make wine on wine. But $50, which I did know going in, still itās high. For anyone traveling to Chicagoā¦.Swift and Sons in the West loop. Great atmosphere, great meal, great service, everything you would expect going going out to eat in a city. And prices much more reasonable for the same quality. Well onto my 5/5 review for Swift and Sons.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience!
Had a marvelous experience at Prime and Proper. Great service from Megan (at a bar booth with a great view of the Detroit street) and phenomenal food. When making reservations via their website, I noted that it was our 25th anniversary and at the end of the meal, our server presented us with a delicious dessert. It is on the pricey side, but the cowboy ribeye and grilled caesar salad was enough food for the two of us (and tasted amazing). Definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyPrime and Proper: What happened?
I visited Prime and Proper in March of 2022. I had a perfectly lovely time and felt like fine dining was back, after a long hiatus for the pandemic. Unfortunately, something happened between March and June. The experience changed enough for me to not want to return. It has been my experience that when a restaurant changes like this, the future is not bright. From the start, the evening was off. Simple requests for a glass of club soda seemed like afterthoughts. As a matter of fact, just about everything was an afterthought that night. Instead of being presented with a cheerful crew who was going to be handling our table, the only constant was the one server who handled taking our orders. There wasnāt even a sommelier present! I get that COVID has made for absences among staff of all businesses, but the ākeeper of the wineā is sort of an important station within any fine dining establishment. I figured there would be an associate level sommelier who would pick up the slack sometimes. Apparently that was not the case. Fast forward to our orders: they were not of the same caliber as my three other visits over the past five years. Me and my associateās rib-eyes were lackluster, to say the least. I have an expectation for beef in the price point. There was very little marbling present. It looked more like a New York Strip than a rib eye! His wifeās filet was just wrong when it was presented to her. She did NOT ask for it butterflied. It was also well-done. She sent it back to have a new steak prepared. As for the sides, those were just awful. I have had the Mac n Cheese a number of times now. Iāve had boxed Mac that tasted better. The loaded beef fat potatoes were equally as unimpressive. The seasonings on basically everything were not of the same level as past visits. We also werenāt presented with any means to serve ourselves. It took flagging someone down to obtain spoons for each side dish. Thatās just sad. My complaint about the dessert is that, well, you should have a dessert menu that transitions with the seasons!! Yes, always have a trusty chocolate dish. You should also be taking advantage of what is locally offered! NO peach cobbler, nothing to showcase anything that Michigan is known for. My peanut butter pavĆ© was delicious, but againāI wish there had been something new to try. My associateās chocolate cake was just meh. It was served with a very small amount of vanilla ice cream, when it needed much more to offset that flavor combination within the multiple layers of the cake. Our server tried, he really did! He was an experienced member of the restaurant industry, but this failed meal wasnāt all his fault. It seemed like there was a catastrophic breakdown of communication between the kitchen, the serving staff and even the host station. The side windows were tipped up to open up the restaurant. While I can see this being a great idea for lunch, I donāt agree with it for dinner. The posh exclusivity that I felt during past visits was gone with this open air experience. It also attracted a lot of people just walking by, and thus the bar was overstuff with too many people trying to dine there. In the past, the bar has seemed to be where one waits while oneās table is preparedānot a crowded pack of patrons in polo shirts and shorts. There were apologies by management and attempts to make things right, but itās time to move to a new steak house. Luckily I think I have found one!!!

The service was great, atmosphere very nice....dress code policy leaves something to be desired. 4 of us met for dinner, one of the gentlemen had open toed sandals on (not flip flops). We were not allowed to be seated at a table as a result however open toed shoes for ladies are acceptable. It doesn't make sense. So we ended up dining at the bar and spent almost $1,000. Interesting that the 'no shorts policy' was overlooked but the open toed are shoe policy wasn't. Very disappointing with these discriminating practices. Prices are too high.
Be the first to ReplyBest pork chops Iāve ever eaten
Wow! stumbled upon this place in Detroit by accident but I was sure glad I did. A very top end steakhouse, but much much more. I sat at the bar and was served by Matt, Meaghan, and Sierra they went above and beyond to make sure I left completely satisfied. I only have one night in Detroit but I believe I ate the finest meal you could find in Detroit at this great restaurant. I highly recommend the Heritage Berkshire bone in pork chops( I love steak and usually order it everywhere I go but these were the best pork chops I can ever remember eating and Iām not a young guy). On the side I had the loaded beef fat potatoes, (they were finger potatoes that were baked, then at the table covered in a creamy cheesy sauce with chunks of bacon in them as well delicious). This is an upscale restaurant and will have something that everyone will like definitely recommend eating here.
Be the first to ReplyI was SO disappointed
I've been craving a great steak dinner for a while. My wife I and I went to Prime and Proper for our 12th anniversary. The service was awesome. The steaks however was not good. I've had better steaks at the cheap places. Save your money and skip this place.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food
A special place to enjoy a good meal. It has traditional supper club meals, and lovely presentation. Unfortunately we went on a night when terribly violence occurred. I realize that's not the norm, but something I will consider next time.
