Very impressive first visit
Our first visit to Provender, and will certainly be back. Prix fixe lunch great value, lovely calm ambience, brilliant food (creme brulee was pronunced the best ever!) and service efficient, understated and attentive. The perfect package.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food at a great price.
This was our second time at this restaurant and we were so impressed. All 4 mains were fantastic as were our starters. Service was friendly and warm. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic 2-course lunch
My wife and I went to Provender for their ยฃ15 2 course lunch menu. The options were written on a blackboard so I am presuming that they change. I opted for the salmon mousse which came with some beautifully pickled cucumber and crusty bread. My wife had a butternut squash soup. Both starters were excellent and without any faults. For the main I had a steak and chips with peppercorn sauce. I ordered it rare and it was cooked to the correct temperature, the chips were lovely and crisp and the sauce had a deep flavour and creamy texture. My wife had the venison pie, which after trying, I realised was the highlight of the meal. It had proper sizeable chunks of venison and mushroom running through it and it was a good size which would leave you properly full after leaving. Service was warm, friendly and efficient. This is one of the best value for money meals I have had in a long time.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice
very welcoming staff. I had read about this online and only looked at reviews later as I always check reviews before visiting. it was quiet and the ambience is really good. The burgers were really good and tasty. clean and proper napkins (my son 12 yrs old doesnt wipe his mouth on his sleeve and thinks the sauce was really good - hache) For the amount of money paid, It's almost equivalent to a meal anywhere else but better quality ingredients. I mean, duck burger?? never heard of it until i visited this place

Took my friend last night as a birthday meal very welcomed friendly staff and an excellent waitress the food was excellent as one would expect, my only problem was booking it up in the first place as difficult trying to get through on the phone, however it is worth keep trying as food is delicious
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable
The two of us, my birthday treat. Nice table in the mezzanine area. The waiter was very personable, gave us more bread as we both chose the parfait and there is never enough bread provided. I had the duck burger - very nice and the other main was steak, also good. Chocolate tart was very filling, our waiter was spot on with her advice! My only caveat is I think ยฃ15 corkage is rather steep. The comparable bistro down the road charges much less. I am sure we will return.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food and wonderful service!
My partner booked the restaurant as a surprise for me and he made an excellent choice! We went on a Friday evening and were immediately greeted and shown to our table. The waiting staff were very attentive and really cared that we had everything we needed. This means a lot in this day and age as I feel a lot of establishments lack these curtesies! The food was beautifully presented and I had French onion soup which was fresh and piping hot, my partner had a starter of ham hock and pigs trotter which looked lovely. I chose the classic coq au vin absolutely delicious and my partner had a steak cooked to perfection! The desserts were sherry trifle and I had a selection of mini desserts and a coffee which actually was nicer than just one! The whole experience was brilliant and the restaurant should be very proud of its wonderful food and service. We will definitely go again!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent local French restaurant in Wanstead, E11
Had a very nice lunch with my partner and a friend on Sunday (05.02.2023). We all selected dishes from the a la carte menu and weren't disappointed. Salmon, Escargot & soup to start. Mains of pork belly (with excellent crispy crackling) with sides of Dauphinois potatoes and creamy spinach, hake with squid ink risotto, etc... the pork belly already came with roast potatoes and all dishes served with (free) small cauliflower cheese. Every item was perfectly cooked. With 2 courses each, also two glasses of house wine and a beer, the total cost was ยฃ113. Excellent food, excellent service and a welcoming smile from a waitress. RECOMMENDED!

This was our first visit - we were attracted to the restaurant because of its mention in the Michelin guide. We very much enjoyed our lunch - wide range of choices available plus two specials of the day. These were just verbally described to us but no prices given for either dish. I enjoyed both my onion soup and the reblochon souffle. Both were full of flavour and served on piping hot plates/dishes. In some ways they were just a bit too hot as it was necessary to allow both to cool for several minutes before I was able to eat anything. My husband enjoyed the ham hock fritter and the haunch of vension. Both very attractively plated and well flavoured. I was surprised that the restaurant did not feel terribly french in any way. Little hint in the decor of a relationship to a french bistro. If I'm honest the building and the service lacked personality. Only for a very brief moment did we experience any interested interaction with a member of staff. Service was functional and perfunctory. We would return to sample the Prix Fixe menu during the week - it's not available on Saturday evening or at any time on Sunday. Plus point - an accessible toilet on the ground floor. Such a joy when this is available. Too many restaurants do not welcome disabled guests in this way. Minus point - parking in the area is in high demand. We were able to secure an on street spot after circling for a few minutes.

Very good value 3 course set menu with inexpensive add on for steak with roquefort sauce. Good choice of wines. Friendly service.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food, but average service
We went there during a midweek. The food was very good quality but the service was not attentive. The servers were not rude at all, but they were unresponsive (e.g. dirty plates on our table for 20 mins after eating main course and no check up on how our meal was going). For an expensive restaurant with an automatic service charge, we did expect better service.
Be the first to ReplyNo dogs policy
Booked this restaurant for me my wife my uncle and aunt we have two little dogs and they papillions we was happy to sit outside when entering the restaurant and speaking to the manager he said they had a dog no dogs policy when I said to him where do I sit outside and he said Iโm sorry but no dogs allowed at all found this to be totally against the French culture and I donโt think Iโve ever been to any restaurant where they have a no dogs policy even sitting outside I donโt know what the food is like because we were ushered away from the restaurant but a found them to be very rude and typical French if Iโm being honest
Be the first to ReplyExcellent mid-week celebration meal
We chose Provender to celebrate my son's graduation and it was perfect. Have been before with friends for dinner, but always at the weekend. On a Wednesday evening, I am pleased to say the restaurant was buzzing and the food and service were, as always, excellent. The food is always inventive and beautifully presented and the specials are always worth having. This is a really great restaurant and we are fortunate to have something this consistently good on our doorstep.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous french fare, beguiling galic charm
"Amazing" Delicious food, both from the set menu and a la carte, friendly, professional and caring service, high quality ingredients, excellence in the kitchen, and a great house red. What more could one want?! Thank you very much to all involved, weยดll be back one Saturday lunchtime soon. love Catherine

Great selection of food ,polite service and reasonably priced. Celebrated a 70th birthday and all were treated like royalty.
Be the first to ReplyHigh quality French food
High quality French restaurant with very good service. Genuine bistro French fare. I had what could only be described as a large square croquette stuffed with pigs trotter. Excellent as a starter. Maigret of duck cooked perfectly rare with orange sauce for a main course. Great to have properly braised endive/ chicory and very good pomme dauphinois. Justifies entry in the Michelin guide. Not inexpensive but there was also a good value set menu. Only slight disappointment were the cheeses as only one was French. I expected all to be French. Having said that all in near perfect condition.
Be the first to ReplyImpressive food and attentive but need to be warmer
I was very impressed by the quality of food and presentation and interesting dishes. Staff are attentive but seem repressed and need to try being friendlier
Be the first to ReplyLove this place.
We have been coming here for a few years now and still love it. We do not live in Wansted, but we do come here a lot, because it is so nice, cosy, lovely food, wine and atmophere.
Be the first to ReplyKeep an eye on - or ear open for - the 'specials'
I'm a frequent and regular lunchtime eater at this classy, friendly, independent and value for money, French bistro. When there's a 'special' - starter, main or dessert - I suggest that you prick your ears up .... Yesterday, the special dessert was 'Cheesecake de luxe'. It was a cheesecake meets an Eton mess, of the subtlest, sweet fruit flavours imaginable: nothing so crass as a strawberry. The top of the cheesecake was sweet, salt-baked celeriac: earlier I'd had some savoury salt-baked celeriac on my starter and main plates. So, this brilliant 'pudding' ranked, in my view, as 'something for the record books'.

This is a serious food-lovers place. A wide range of deeply interesting and attractive possibilities. I had a ham hock and pigs trotter fritter - yes it sounds vile but it was brilliant - and rabbit stuffed with black pudding - again, superficially vile but actually fantastic; partner had tuna and a goats cheese salad, both far more interesting than the mere names suggest. House wine perfectly OK. All the things I like about restaurants were there: attentive staff - they are watching the room; food comes relatively quickly; not overly crowded (admittedly our reservation was for 6pm) nor noisy. And solid value. We got away for less than ยฃ50 a head which, for somewhere of this calibre, I would consider really pretty good. Definitely going again.
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant in Wanstead
Perfect French restaurant for our last night after two weeks of dog & house sitting down the road. We had the Prix Fixe menu, which worked out cheaper than many local pub meals, even with wine. Love the geological map of Massif Centrale.
Be the first to ReplyAwful service, terrible atmosphere
We went in a group for a birthday and were shocked by the service. One of our party has coeliac disease, which was communicated as soon as we arrived. With each course, they served bread on the plate of the coeliac. They seemed completely unaware of dietry requirements and were surly and ride when we informed them. In general, the staff were rude and unpleasant. The food is average at best, and the service and atmosphere terrible. The worst place to eat in Wanstead. It's a pretentious restaurant and lacks in every area.

Really enjoyed our trip to Provender, we came for a special occasion on a week night and the whole experience was excellent.
Attentive friendly staff, amazing food and wine, nice atmosphere.
We had the Cรดte de boeuf as the main event, which was very special. Everything else was tasty but in particular the Knickerbocker Glory with Hazelnuts for dessert was sooo good!
As ever - just perfect
We have been coming to Provender for many years and have never had a less than brilliant experience. It somehow seems to be even more perfect given these strange times . We visited today ; probably the first time in a couple of months. We felt extremely welcome and it felt so good to be there. As ever the food was amazing; check out the new menu! Service was so friendly and efficient. Overall it felt like a very special treat. Hands down its my favourite restaurant. Thank you to all of the staff who ensure that you will always have a perfect meal and a great time.
Be the first to ReplyMiserable manager
Very average food, overcooked meat.
The French manager was very unfriendly and should not be in hospitality.
He was very rude and surly to my wife and we will never go back.
