Lunch
Just lovely ❤️❤️❤️ what more can I say !! 10 Course tasting menu with a couple of bottles to match and it was very memorable
Be the first to ReplyPlayful, theatrical food.
Staff were very friendly, professional & accommodating. The restaurant was very comfortable and I loved how easily you could sneak peeks into the kitchen from where we were seated - a really lovely touch. The food was theatrical but also incredibly skilful. I felt like this was an incredibly skilled experienced chef/kitchen that knows food well enough to be able to play around, have some fun, show off a little and it was very much appreciated by me! I didn’t enjoy the marmite honey butter but I got the impression that didn’t matter at all. Everyone knows marmite is an ingredient people love or hate - so the confidence to be playful and creative with an ingredient like that was impressive. The butter is where the dislike of the food ends for me. The crab was lovely and delicate with a beautiful sweet pea purée. The haddock and eggs was incredibly rich and left me wanting more of the delicious tartar underneath. I could have devoured another bone marrow cracker too but it’s a good job I didn’t request this as I was stuffed by the end of the meal. I was not looking forward to a couple of things on the menu: - the mint choccy chip (apart from after eights, I’ve never enjoyed mint in sweet dishes). - the quail (was underwhelmed the last time I’d had it at a different restaurant). However, and this was the clincher, both courses blew me away - easily favourites of the evening. The praline like caramel hidden under that mint ice cream & chocolate was incredible and the quail was cooked to perfection - I really, really enjoyed it. Also, (this review is getting a little too long now, but this has to be said) the crème brûlée was easily the best one I’ve eaten anywhere by quite a mile. I can see why it was given 10/10/10! I’ve always found crème brûlée a little boring, but this one was crème of the crop pardon the pun - and not boring at all. My husband can’t eat fish and they accommodated this, replacing three fish dishes with a beetroot option, a cauliflower option and a lamb option. Thank you! The beetroot was particularly impressive - the sorbet encased in that beautiful cocoa butter, wow! All in all, a wonderful evening - the only disappointment being the cocktails and some of the options on the wine list seemed over priced. I personally couldn’t stomach paying double the regular cost of a pornstar martini and would have really enjoyed one before the meal. But hey ho, no other complaints from me. When I win the lottery, I will eat here on a regular basis 😃
Be the first to ReplyA let down.
The food was very well prepared and presented and tasted delicious. The staff were very friendly, the cocktails were excellent, the location and setting all superb. So why only 3/5? This did not feel like a dining experience meant to satisfy. This felt like a chef showing off rather than one trying to feed his customers. A 3 course meal should not leave you going to KFC because you're still hungry. It felt mean and stingy, ultimately a bit of a disappointment. Out of the 4 michelin star restaurants I've been to, this 4th by a long way.
Be the first to ReplyFood good, let down by decor and service
Experience was a little disappointng overall. We've eaten at several michelin starred venues previously, and this was the least special, despite most of the dishes being very good. My 3 star (average) rating is based on a comparisson to other restaurants at this level. There were several factors that made this NOT feel like a premium experience - the decor feels dated and well overdue a refresh, it feels like a cross between a premier inn reception and an indian restaurant. There was £2 supermarket soap in the toilets, which is fine at home....just not what you expect when you're paying £350 for lunch for 2 (break out the Molton Brown please!). Also, I paid the full discritonary 12.5% service charge, which, on reflection, I wouldn't do again. The service was fine, but not special, so on reflection I'd have left £20 cash. Most of the dishes on the tasting menu were very good, I'd say 9/10 for majority. A couple weren't especially tasty, probably scooring more like 6/10 for this level of restaurant. Am I glad I went? Yes as I've wanted to try it for some time. Would I rush back or recommend to someone else? Not until the place has a revamp.
Be the first to ReplyLacking atmosphere
The welcome was very good, we were then really disappointed when shown to our table for 2. Essentially the restaurant has o main room then a second room which had 2 rows of tables for 2 all arranged against 2 of the walls. The tables were close together, privacy limited and really this detracted from what was a really good set of dishes. The problem was it was difficult to relax completely - you feel as if you have been crammed into a room with lots of other people. The lighting and room arrangement really do need some thought by the restaurant. We wouldn’t return solely for this reason - a restaurant of this calibre needs to pay attention to the whole dining experience.

Another superb visit to Purnells. We cannot recommend this place enough. Service, atmosphere, drinks and of course the food was, as always, exceptional. A few new updates to the taster menu were great but nothing beats the haddock and eggs - my favourite!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent as always
We have been lucky enough to have been to Purnell's several times over the post few years and it is always exceptional. This time slightly less so as they have shaved off the amuse bouche experience in-between courses we noticed, but I am very sympathetic to the struggles all restaurants have been through in those few years; covid; energy prices etc... and so not so important in our view. The course we did have were beautiful and tasty and the service was spot on. Always notice when the wine needs refilling, never feel rushed. It is an amazing experience and you should go if you have the opportunity.

Staff friendly attentive and helpful, but discreet and not hovering like some places. Good quality food despite limit on the time at the table. Will go again.

5courses of great food with great service. Thank you purnells. Worth every penny, wine choices were excellent.
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable Experience
Start to finish, one of the best dining experiences, provided by talented chefs and wonderful waiting staff. Perfect for a long Friday lunch with friends and at no point durung the tasting menu did we feel rushed, despite being the last diners by the time we left at 4pm. If you love small plates of inventive and incredibly flavoured food, this is the resraurant for you - book now and thank me later.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely outstanding
From the moment we walked in the door, to the moment we left, the whole experience was amazing. The manager greeted us and was friendly, welcoming and really funny. The waiting staff were all impeccable! The service was like nothing I’ve experienced before. Every single member of staff took time to chat to us and made us feel so welcome. One particular member of staff (unfortunately I didn’t catch her name) was brilliant. She even ordered me a cocktail which isn’t on the menu yet, after we got chatting about cocktails. She was genuinely interested in how we were enjoying our evening and the food. The food…WOW! The tasting menu was so delicious. We loved the theatre that surrounded each dish. We were lucky enough to be served one of our dishes by the Head Chef, Luke, which was a real treat. We thoroughly enjoyed dishes that we wouldn’t ordinarily choose and we loved every single one. The whole experience was just lovely, the ambience, staff, food, all of it was amazing and we will definitely be back.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening spent at Purnells with friends.
The staff were outstanding all evening.
The food was inventive and delicious.
Glynn even took the time to have a quick chat and a photo with us.
Highly recommend a visit to Purnells, an experience that you will not be disappointed with.
Lovely Lunch
My Son treated me to lunch today. I have to say what a fantastic experience. All the dishes were amazing and totally mind blowing. Food, staff, ambience top notch.

Be the first to ReplyA brilliant night with friends
For one reason after another we had to wait over two years to come back to visit...as a group of four we were so excited, so looking forward to a great night and so ready to let our hair down....and Purnells did not disappoint.
Cheese and pineapple...not always a favourite in the past but with new changes it was just amazing. Haddock and Eggs, always great but this too had risen to another level. Mint Choccy Chip, again a huge favourite but elevated even more and served by the man himself, class.
The wine flight was impressive too, with each glass perfectly matched.
I realise I'm gushing at this point but the ethos of the whole team was to make sure we were having a great time, accommodating a couple of changes, making sure we were comfortable and noticing every little detail.
I think it's obvious we love to come here, but this was a really special night...we had a blast with great friends in a hugely welcoming environment with course after course of clever clever cookery.
Thank you Chef to you and your wonderful team, yet again you smashed it.
If you've not visited before...book!

Well what can I say? The food was exceptional from start to finish on the taster menu. Wine choice was top notch and the service was first class. It was a special occasion for my sister in law and therefore I asked if Glyn would have a photo with her. He came out and chatted to us and welcomed photos etc. Great place - don’t worry about the price- it’s worth it.
Be the first to ReplyWow....just wow!
Husband bought me 5 course taster lunch as a Xmas prezzie, amazing is all I can say! Every course tasted amazing, best meal I've had in my life!
Be the first to ReplyBest Michelin menu I’ve tried
A la Carte menu for dinner. Service was exceptional. Sommelier recommended an amazing bottle of red. Gifts from the kitchen were a pleasant surprise. The pork belly was the best I’ve tried. Beetroot starter a flavour explosion. And the 10/10/10 egg custard dessert was out of this world. The food was the best Michelin food I’ve tasted to date and would highly recommend!
