One of my favorite places
I love the walk around the reservoir every time I come to Cambridge. Families and runners, dogs and kids, birdwatchers.
Be the first to ReplyA Lovely Place to Walk, Especially if you are a Dog lover
I love walking around Fresh Pond- Even in the winter months with the trees bare and the ground frozen. It feels like you are miles away from the city. People walk their dogs here all the time- good thing I like dogs. Many let their dogs run free. I've only an an issue once where a dog was pretty aggressive- the owner finally got a clue and put him on leash. Definitely worth the walk.

There’s an approximately 2mi paved walk around the Cambridge Mass reservoir known as Fresh Pond. In the 1800s, the lake was privately owned and via adjacent rail access, it was the source of large blocks of ice shipped worldwide for purposes of refrigeration. Today, it is public property and a water supply for the city of Cambridge. It is open dawn to dark. The walk is mostly level with a few mild grades. There is both tar and chip and gravel paving. Benches are scattered along the course of the walk and there are several points of entry. The only restroom facilities are at the large waterworks building at one end of the lake near Fresh Pond Parkway. These are in the “rangers’ “ office on the ground floor, lake side of the big building, right off the path. In that general area of the park, there are some open fields for recreation, a childs’ play area, and a nice scenic overlook. There is no public drinking water along the whole walk except at the waterworks building. Around the rest of the lake there are nice vistas of the water and foliage. The lake itself is fenced off as it is a public water supply and you cannot go in the water at any point. Most of the walk is nicely shaded. Bicycles and pets are welcome if proper courtesies are extended and there are several pet waste removal bag stations. We encountered no threatening types as we made our walk, but no security was evident either. There are some scattered emergency contact poles along the loop however. At one side of the lake, there is an adjacent 9 hole golf course, but this has separate access. A small pond adjacent to the lake is also in that area and has a nice viewing bench. Plenty of small fish are visible in the water. Across Concord Ave from the Fresh Pond walk, with easy access points, there are multiple shopping areas with coffee shops, fast food, gas stations, food stores (and all of their public rest rooms and parking if needed. If you’re poison ivy sensitive, beware that these plants are in abundance immediately along portions of the walk, though there is plenty of room to walk wide of these. Beware also careless bikers approaching rapidly from behind as you stroll and if in a group, remember not to walk more than two abreast as you enjoy your walk. On the whole, a terrific peaceful place for a stroll, a dog walk, a run, or a nice bike ride. Just remember to take some water with you and consider your needs for bathroom facilities in advance.

I run in Cambridge. My long runs used to be along the Charles. Which is ok...but there are always noisy busy streets you are rnning alongside. Fresh Pond is so awesome - you can run around the reservoir and go on several side trails like the lily pad pond. Lots of water, also - you can refill water bottles at many stops! You have to be comfortable with DOGS - I am really not, but learn some rules to be ok around them. Note that the rules of the park are that when dogs are off leash, they MUST be under control of the owner - in sight, and respond to voice commands. There are so many adorable dogs there. But if you get that random rogue dog chasing you and biting at you or fighting with other dogs and scaring you while you are running - esp if you are an older breast cancer patient survivor dealing with chemo and not in a place to deal with fighting dogs - report the dogs and they will be picked up.

If you want a restful walk with beautiful pond views, this is the place. It about 2 1/4 miles around and takes an hour or less to walk around. There are grassy areas for picnicking.
Be the first to ReplyReally that great
In Cambridge amongst the left wing liberals is a great hidden spot with woods parks and a pond. Free with of course awful parking.. it is a cambridge status symbol. Great break from central or Harvard square

Running around Fresh Pond is a great way to get your running morning exercise in a less stressful environment.

One of my local favorite places to take a walk. Lots of trees and open green areas. The water is protected so no fishing or swimming. Bring a good pair of sneakers. The walking area is pretty much flat so it makes for an easy walk. Enjoy
