I dined at the bar at Rania last night and had a great experience. The ambiance is pretty cool and I'm guessing more Indian traditional than contemporary. My one pet peeve about the bar is how close it is to the ball when you enter the bar area. I can see the seats against the wall being hard to navigate behind people, especially overweight people. I say opt for a seat facing away from the window if you value space and don't mind not looking outside. The food and drinks were great here. It was nice seeing Tony (Bar Manager) who I know from way back in the day at Del Campo. I think I got hooked up with 1-3 free drinks so kudos to him for taking care of me. The drinks are outrageous with all the smoke and cool stuff they do. The Rang Birange display is absolutely nuts with all the snake and box. The Make Me Famous was also good. I forget the 3rd drink I had but all were great. At a price point of around $19 per drink, the presentation made up for it. I opted for the $90 Prix-fixe menu and it didn't disappoint. You better bring your appetite as course 3 is huge with the Naan and Rice on the side. I started with the Shrimp Koliwada which was very spicy and tasty. The second course was Chana Masala Panisse, which was also very good. The Hay Aged Pork Loin was also very good but I had no room left after the first two courses and all the Naan and Rice that was on the side. For dessert, I opted for the Chocolate Tart, which was light and delicious. The service here was great and almost too attentive, but that's a Michelin star experience for you. I can see myself being a regular here but will opt for the a la carte menu at the bar unless I'm starving and can handle the prix-fixe.

First time to this newly minted Michelin starred Indian restaurant. To say a unique dining experience is a disservice...it truly stands above the other offerings in town. Though it's a fixed price menu, there are still a number of options per course. Service is excellent...friendly, knowledgeable ( just learned that vindaloo is actually based on a Portuguese recipe...not what we think of !). Well appointed dining area, bright and energetic. Though a number of tables were occupied it was remarkably quiet. Being in DC, the $90/person tab was still a value, based on quality, presentation and portion. Won't go into a lengthy description of our dishes, just to say it's not your typical industrial Indian cuisine. Worth the splurge!

Be the first to ReplyA well-known famous Punjabi restaurant in DC revamped
A well-known famous Punjabi restaurant in DC revamped itself recently into this beautiful unique upscale venue. The food is reminiscent of Punjabi Staples however with a fusion twist with Cultural cuisines throughout the subcontinent. The food definitely makes you stop and think about where you are. I had to dock one star as it didn't suit my stomach. however at the end the presentation, the ambience, the service was excellent would highly recommend.

The food and drinks at Rania were very good, so the reason I'm giving it 3 stars is the service. We sat at Rania for about 2.5 hours, and saw our server 3 times, max. We waited nearly an hour between our second appetizer and main course, but we didn't see our server that whole time. Thus, not only did we not have an update about the timing of our food (despite tables that walked in after us getting food before us), but we also didn't have a chance to order a drink while we waited. On drinks -- all the cocktails are very theatrically made (smoke, light up, etc) which I really appreciated. They were also yummy.
Be the first to ReplyI had an excellent birthday dinner at Rania.
It is a very creative take on Indian cuisine while being true to the fundamental. The aloo chaat was excellent, and so beef short rib. Every dish was interesting!
Be the first to ReplyI see why Rania received one Michelin Star, this place
I see why Rania received one Michelin Star, this place impressed. The parking is not that good, either street parking or garage, there was no valet option when we went. Other than parking, everything about the experience was exceptional. The restaurant was clean, the service was prompt and attentive, and the food was stellar! The price should not be surprising, so don't be shocked. When you add on drinks (avg $19 or more) or order from the special, it goes up there. My party ordered the lobster special with an upcharge of $30 on top of the $90 tasting menu, a separate Beef Short Rib family-style for $60, and numerous libations. Enjoy the company, enjoy the meal, and don't worry about the cost.
Be the first to ReplyMaybe closer to a 3.
5. What I got off the tasting menu: - Shrimp koliwada (3.5/5) - Shrimp were well cooked and there was an explosion of flavor, but it was a little on the salty side. - Lamb cheela (3/5) - Kinda reminded me of a lamb birria taco. Decent but not amazing - Pork vindaloo (3.5/5) - Large, nicely cooked pieces of pork belly in a pretty tasty curry, but I dunno how this could be called vindaloo without any spiciness. - Mishti doi (3/5) - I don't remember too much about this dessert. - Cocktails (4/5) The service was super attentive, and the restaurant had a nice vibe to it. But ultimately I think I'd prefer to go to Daru (or even Indigo) for Indian food in DC.

$90 per person for 4 course meal. Truly I would give it a 3.5 star if comparing only to other Michelin stars in the area. The ambience was nice, but it definitely was a little dark in there. The service was good, but not as good as I've had at other Michelin star restaurants. The food was yummy and had good spice and flavor. If you don't like any spicy food, this isn't the spot for you. I was a little disappointed with the lamb, Rogan Josh - it was a pretty small portion. I understand tasting menus tend to be smaller portions, but I was expecting a little more. The amuse bouche to start was unexpected. The accompaniments with the main course included two small pieces of garlic naan, and two pieces of roti, two bowls of saffron rice, and two small bowls of lentils. I wish there had been more naan. The portion of that was really small for four people. The roti really wasn't that good I would've rather had more of the naan. One of our friends requested the cheapest full bottle of red wine (they sell half bottles for some reason and it's not worth it $ wise). We had a hard time understanding some of the servers and when he brought over a wine it ended up being a more expensive bottle. None of us were aware until after we left and were talking about the bill total. The metro delayed for 30-40 mins while on our way in which resulted in us being late for our reservation. I called them twice to update them on the situation and they were very reassuring that it was OK. We did end up in the bar area as opposed to the dining room, which is what our reservation had us at. I suppose this change could be due to us being almost an hour late, but a little heads up that that would happen would've been nice. We listed a birthday on the reservation and nothing was done by the restaurant to celebrate that. Most restaurants, even non-Michelin star ones, but especially the Michelin ones tend to do something special for special occasions. All in all it was fine but not some place I need to go back to.
Be the first to ReplyLoved my experience here.
Food is served in a nice timely manner. It's $90 for four courses but you have the option to add additional dishes for different prices for each section of the course. The price is very fair. The definite stand outs for me was the oysters, lamb, and beetroot. I think the oysters were #1 for me bc I've never had oysters served with this sauce. It's amazing and warm. The beetroot chop was nice and crispy with fresh veggies that made it refreshing. And I just love the lamb and the sauce with crispy almonds on top. Everything else was perfectly cooked. Like the short ribs melted like butter, so freaking tender. Everything else was just delicious but nothing that I'd die to come right back for. Overall, high recommend trying this spot out. Great for dates.
Be the first to ReplyVegetarian variety: 8/10.
Each section of the three-course menu had two vegetarian options, one of which was dairy-free. Each table also gets three small sides to share, all of which were vegetarian. Taste: 8/10. My first two courses were terrific - textured, creative riffs on familiar chaat dishes with intentional flavors and really pretty plating. I would have happily enjoyed another plate of each! In comparison, my main dish of tandoori paneer felt a little flat and heavy, though still tasty with the shared sides and rice that came with it. Ambiance: 8/10. Comfortable chairs you could sink into, wide tables, accents of gold without going overboard - what's not to like? Price: 8/10. $90 per person for a Michelin-starred three courses plus dessert was very reasonable.

Be the first to ReplyWent here for Valentines with my wife and son.
They do not have anything for kids at all, like no high chairs no boosters but they were pretty accommodating with the custom stuff we asked for even though they had a prix fixe menu going on for the night. Anyway the food is fantastic and the cocktails are great. They obviously put a lot of work into their plating/presentation and they also have gimmicks for their cocktails too. My favorite was the one that came in a treasure chest full of smoke and a snake statue with a bunch LEDs. Highly recommend for an intimate/romantic experience.

I've eaten here three times since October and can't wait to go back. Unusual ingredients (truffles, fennel, oysters) for Indian food in a beautiful setting with excellent service. Worth the money.
Be the first to ReplyFood was delicious.
Service was alright. Ambiance was formal since this is a non-casual Indian food. My favorite was the salad and the desserts. I honestly can't remember the names, but they are really good.
Be the first to ReplyThey delivered on their promise of Indian food with a twist.
My favorite Indian restaurant is Rasika, who I think does lentils as they always should be done and has some amazing fish dishes... BUT... I would consider this a close second after dining here just once. I LOVE aloo gobi and just about any paneer dish, so it might not be too surprising that two of my dishes out of the 3-course prix fixe meal were... you guessed it, cauliflower and cheese :) Sauces, textures, spices and a gentle heat that builds through the course -- it was the perfect twist on classics and an incredible meal. To be honest, I was so engaged in the symphony of flavors happening on my dishes that I wasn't really paying attention to what my fellow tablemates were eating, but the consensus was a round 5-stars for our dining experience :)Besides the food, the ambience is romantic with low-lighting and some sort of fire stick on the table (maybe not the wisest choice, we almost set our menus on fire!). I am not sure I entirely understand the difference between the two dining rooms either, but then again I didn't wander around the restaurant on my visit, but the main dining room was well appointed. In terms of drinks, they were well-crafted and I liked the added touch of the lighted coasters underneath that made them glow. Some would probably say they are gimmicky, but hey, I am a fan of the theatrics and love the idea of a little show during my meal :)Bottom line, I am looking forward to a return visit!

Booking a table for Valentine's Day, my wife spent an evening at Rania and walked out impressed. Located in Penn Quarter, the space is beautifully designed with a glowing bar in the front and dining rooms in the back.Service was friendly and mastered the art of timing. Each dish reached our table in perfectly timed intervals. Every dish was excellent, but the standout plates were the oysters and chaat. They take tradition Indian items and add a little twist to it. The cocktails were excellent and the menu offers something for everyone.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered an Anaritha cocktail.
I asked if the cumin was too strong and he said no. The hostess said our table was ready and they said they'd bring the drinks to the table and that it would be included in the bill- we did not have to pay separately. LOVED that!!! Also loved the water glasses! Was surprised that the large bar was empty around 8pm on a Saturday night. We were seated in a roomy booth in a room within the dining room; there were 6 booths. The lighting was flattering loved the lighting in the table- it looked like straws were on fire. There was a bigger large dining room in the back. I saw it in the way to the bathroom. Nice but less ambiance. I got the chicken Kofta truffle cream, pickled wild mushrooms , lamb cheela red onion laccha buttermilk mouse, and the raw fish (sub for the scallops), spinach Kaoru, tumeric moilee. For the first course I found the chicken to be more spicy than the shrimp. Would love to get the shrimp next time. We also got the cauliflower. Everything was tasty. Rumor is that the new Chef came from a Michelin star Indian restaurant in NYC.Second course. I loved the Chana masala panee. Wow . My lamb "taco" was amazing. Very meaty and flavorful. I also loved the oysters.Loved the fish - even the next day. Bread was great. I got the banana chocolate dessert and enjoyed every bite! Our waiter was a little stiff at first but he warmed up to us. Overall an amazing meal! I highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyIt really is a shame that the kitchen putting out the best
It really is a shame that the kitchen putting out the best Indian cuisine in DC, at a high end restaurant, seems to be diminished by its front of the house staff. Our first visit, after flawed meals at predecessorPunjab Grill, turned out to be delicious, but service was slow. A second round of drinks, ordered before the second course, still had not arrived halfway through the third course, even after repeated requests. Tonight we had a different dining room faux pas. We ordered a wine from the sommelier who brought a different, more expensive bottle and never said they were out of the original bottle we ordered. I caught the problem and ordered something else. Before we were finished with the first bottle they were pushing another. At one point the sommelier came out with another bottle and had to veto,d two times not to open it. The waiter asked two more times about more wine. Lastly, when the third course entrees were served, we received about one cup of rice for four people. We had to ask about three more times to get more rice. All these things have occurred on weeknights when the restaurant isn't that busy. I shudder to think of the service at a crowded restaurant period. Dear owners of Rania, your kitchen is great. Lose the pushy sales approach and fix the service.
Be the first to ReplyIn all honesty I much preferred Rania's predecessor, but
In all honesty I much preferred Rania's predecessor, but that doesn't factor into this review and rating. Rania is similarly elegant and nicely appointed with several different dining areas. However, the food and service did not rise to the same level as the decor. We opted to dine in the "Passage to India" dining room which the restaurant promotes as mimicking the dining car of a train. While the room was tasteful, I did not find the more intimate setting or booth seating to be very reminiscent of a restaurant car at all, but to each his own. Rania offers an a la carte menu Tuesday through Thursday or late-night Friday through Sunday, and otherwise has a pre-fixe menu of either three or four courses. We decided on the three course menu. Our server also advised that the first two entrees in each category were vegetarian. While I wouldn't consider trout roe in the potato chaat entree to be vegetarian, perhaps the restaurant prefers a more liberal interpretation of such terms. We were first given an amuse bouche that was nicely presented albeit a bit of an acquired taste that also largely contained fish roe. For our first course, we selected the Chicken Kofta and the Shrimp Koliwada. The latter was an interesting interpretation and served in truffle cream and mushrooms. The shrimp was probably the high point of that course and was served in a tasty mango chutney. For our second course, we selected the lamb cheela and oysters. The oysters packed some heat and were otherwise unremarkable and presented atop an assortment of shells. The lamb cheela was hardly what I expected and rather than being presented like a pancake was more like a soft taco with buttermilk mousse that had the consistency of sour cream and some assorted greens. All in all, our selections for this course were probably the weakest out of our dishes. For our last course, we opted for the lamb shank and pork belly. I must admit it was curious to see a pork menu selection, and while the presentation was uninspired in vindaloo sauce, it was okay. I think the highlight was probably the lamb shank which was cooked perfectly and accompanied by some radish and mint. For sides and accompaniments, we opted to try the smoked black dal, raita, garlic naan, and the saffron rice, of which I would probably recommend either the garlic naan or the saffron rice. Rania offers several creative cocktails and also has an admirable drink menu and wine list. The cocktails were all creative and presented well, in particular the Rang Birange, which is mezcal based. At ~18 dollars each, the prices of some of the cocktails were a little steep, but I would still recommend trying whatever type suits you and your libations of choice. As I mentioned, we did not opt for a dessert course and ended up happy with that decision. We were given the mango sorbet with fennel granita. I would not recommend it in the remotest sense. The proportions were less than ideal with the fennel granita dominating the dish accompanied by a small amount of mango sorbet. My friend said it tasted like grass, and truer words were not spoken that evening. Truer words may have been spoken the following day when someone else said it looked like green feta cheese crumbles. In any event, it was a bit overpowering and less than palatable, though the mango sorbet was not entirely unfortunate if you got past the landscaping taste. Given the choice, I would probably have been more partial to the apple tarte, but I suppose life doesn't take requests. The service we received was attentive enough to get along with but could have been better. We were at times left to our own devices in search of additional tableware and later, after being told it was soon last call and given an option to order additional drinks, our server more or less disappeared and we had to place our orders with a random passerby. What kind of train car has servers who go AWOL? All this to say, service had room for improvement. All said, I think Rania is worth trying but does not live up to the hype or at least the pervasive ads on social media. I would probably suggest trying it a la carte especially as many of the prevalent ingredients and styles are used throughout various dishes and therefore a bit lacking in originality, such as radishes, mousse, mushrooms, and mint. Based on our experience, I would give it three stars. I also note that children are not permitted in the main dining room but are allowed to dine elsewhere in the restaurant. That said, I would not consider the menu choices or ambiance to cater to children unless your child is Eloise.
Be the first to ReplyRania is set in a great location in DC.
The entrance, bar, and dining area are decorated with such beautiful details. From the wood carvings, to the marble table legs, to the splotched mirrored columns, the ambiance transports you to another region. Each dining area was intricately designed for a personable experience with your party.I tried the shrimp koliwada and the cauliflower appetizers, the lamb and chicken Parsi dishes. What was spectacular about my visit was the server's ability to completely describe the visual, taste, and expectations for the dishes on the menu and change my mind about what I thought I wanted to order! I was sold on the flavor mix for the cauliflower dish, down to the shishito peppers. For the chicken Parsi somehow the bird nest and diced chicken piqued my curiosity. The chicken was more minced or ground but the flavor was fantastic.I chose the lavender drink which not only was a balanced blend of flavor and alcohol but such a treat to see. Fine dining should always be accompanied by extravagant libations that one cannot make at home. Thoroughly impressed. Totally full. Sexy surroundings. Even the bathroom was a spectacular sight. Highly recommend. I will be back!
