Modern cuisine instead of Vienna classics
Dinner with family - ordered Fantasie set menu for all. Started with two compliments out of the menu, followed with a standard set. Presentation and taste of every single bite was 🔝 example of modern Michelin ⭐ cuisine. Service was equally perfect! Maybe because of the 14th February love rush the experience took a little bit longer than expected - almost 3 hours. If you are looking for a 21th century restaurant in Vienna - definitely this is the right place!

A real insider tip in the culinary sense right in the heart of Vienna An intimate restaurant with a fantastic chef and an excellent team The sommelier provides incredibly competent advice. The menu with accompanying wine is particularly recommended. You don't get something like this every day. Absolutely great.

Very intimate and cozy restaurant in the very center of Vienna. We came here by accident because the other restaurant we were thinking of visiting was fully booked. They deferred us to this small, but nice restaurant. We started with the 5 course menu and extended it to the 6 course menu during the dinner. All dishes were very tasty except maybe for the ravioli. The ravioli itself was great, but somehow the sum of ingredients just didn’t hit the right note for me and my wife. But other than that, it was a very tasty and good last dinner of our holiday. We went out with a blast as I announced while underway to our hotel.

A restaurant that gives great satisfaction to the palate. Expectations were high and, I must say, completely met. The environment is very welcoming and refined. The staff is extremely kind. The widely assorted wine list. Very satisfactory sanitary facilities. The cuisine, the dishes, the desire to mix the various ingredients were largely achieved by a very good chef who at the end of the evening I had the pleasure of meeting and thanking for having made me live a highly respectable Viennese culinary experience.

I have known the premises of this restaurant since 1990, from "Walter Bauer" and am infinitely grateful to the previous operator for being very careful in selecting his successor! My wife and I experienced AGAIN a great meal and very loving service! YES, it is different, but THAT is EXACTLY what makes the visit so exciting and enjoyable! We very much hope to be able to spend many more wonderful hours here for our taste buds and soul! Helmut Wopalka

We enjoyed a lovely evening of delicious food, fine wine and impeccable service. We were especially impressed by our attentive server, Anastasia! She made our experience better than ever expected. Thank you.

After a year of moving from the Viennese restaurant Bauer to the French gourmet restaurant Duchardt, I couldn't resist stopping by in person. If you take a closer look at the chef's CV, you'll quickly see where his heart lies. The cooking is of a very high standard and I don't think the journey is over yet. The welcome was very warm. I was shown to the carefully chosen table in a good mood (I was out with the dogs) and you could tell that the service team was looking forward to the evening ahead. The dining room is small but nice, the furniture is very comfortable and invites you to linger. It started with not one, but two greetings from the kitchen. I opted for the 6-course menu and was able to enjoy a well-thought-out sequence of fine delicacies that revealed new components as you tasted it more closely. The wine accompaniment was absolutely harmonious and a mixture of local grapes, but also strong wines from Tuscany or France. There was always time to find out more about the wine and its origins and why it goes so well with the food. All in all, it was a warm and absolutely successful evening and I will probably include Vienna in my holiday plans on a regular basis. We will probably read more about Marcus Duchardt in the future; he is at the beginning of what I believe will be a very successful career in the toque and star-rated gastronomy. Please keep it up!

This restaurant has changed hands in the last year. Previously it was owned by Walter Bauer and had a Michelin star. The new owners will have to start again but our visit was very promising. The ambiance is cosy and charmingly old fashioned, with a small number of tables in a warm, welcoming room. However the food is modern and excellent, light and more French in style than the traditional Austrian fare. The wine by the glass (as suggested by the excellent Annette) was very good. Annette has been front of house for many years so there is continuity from the Walter Bauer days and service is excellent. Highly recommended!

Since we were a group, we were automatically given a course menu. I was worried about whether I could eat it all when I saw the long list, but each dish was the size that could be eaten in 2-3 bites. Of course, the main course and risotto were more voluminous. The service was also attentive and detailed, which was good. The location may be a little difficult to find, though.

The owner, Walter, was on site and assisted us with our wine selection. He is extremely knowledgeable about wine and clearly it is a passion of his. The dining room is cozy. Service was excellent! The food was very good although a limited selection. I had sturgeon while my wife had Wiener schnitzel. The highlight of the evening was the goose pate! It was fabulous!

From the lack of a website and paper register it can safely be said that Restaurant Walter Bauer is something of a throwback, a single star from Michelin suggesting competent cooking that is no-frills and heartfelt. Named for its Chef whose Cuisine leans French by way of Vienna, all prepared properly and presented professionally, it is atop white linen that Bread is served almost immediately while Wine proves nearly essential thanks to frequent reminders by waiters. Eventually opting for Sparkling Chardonnay out of Niederösterreich, its bright Citrus not ideal for an amuse of Austrian Bologna but well-suited to Foie Gras and Oranges, course two consisted of Pumpkin Risotto decorated in Green Beans with dollops of Curd Cheese. Receiving Olive Oil with no explanation alongside the Rice, plus a pile of magazines to pass the time with no Wi-Fi, it was under vaulted ceilings surrounded by pink walls that beautifully-cooked Lamb arrived next with Polenta, Artichokes and a single curl of Bell Pepper. €69 for 3-courses, plus €4 for Bread and €16 for “Schmarrn,” Dessert riffs on Viennese shredded Pancakes but misses the mark in portion-size and structure with the lone saving grace some poached Pears and velvety Chocolate Ice Cream.

"Klasse" restaurant run by his owner, Herr Walter, a gentleman, and great staff on his side. One star Michelin, well deserved! This is not the type of Michelin restaurant where you get several "compliments" that you have never seen or tasted. Bauer rather serves "known" products but done to absolute perfection. Special for celebrations. Intimate environment.

Herr Felin, we have been expecting you said Walter in german. The elderly somewhat strict, but yet mild restaurant owner didn’t bother much of my obvious lack of german language. I looked at the time to to assure we weren’t running late.
…Behind the discrete entrance in a sleepy backstreet in Viennas old town ,the 1980’s fluorescent sign brightened the dark alley.
Like the full moon casting light on Jack Nicholson in the 1994 movie “Wolf”, nothing resembled the Michelin restaurant I expected.
Inside, the buzz from the 8 tabled old-fashioned restaurant stilled to you could hear a pin drop. Danke schön, I stuttered, crossing my fingers it was an appropriate response in front of my Austrian audience.
After our eyes were set on the full-course menu with wine pairing the buzz regained its preliminary pulse. Walter and his two disciples maneuvered the floor with resemblance of a scene from the Swan Lake ballet.
In contrary to an instagram friendly environment, Walter Bauer served the most memorable restaurant experiences I’ve yet have had.
Best food during our trip
Impeccable food and service. Intimate setting which a small number of covers.
The finest ingredients, carefully prepared and executed with great care and attention. The veal main course was accompanied with a Rudi Pilcher wine; the main was a triumph.
My quail starter was simply one of the best starters I have had!
Exceptional selection of wine.
Definately visit again.
Thank you
Nice dinner
Not a extent menu but nice food with high quality. Very professional and friendly staff
Cosy and traditional Austrian
My Favorite Restaurant
We have been here several times. It is delightfully formal and the food and service is really wonderful. You feel really special when dinning here. The restaurant is cozy but has lovely vaulted ceilings. The food is Austrian, but is a delightful change from the usual cafe fare. If you like game, you will really like it. The prices are very good for the kind of restaurant it is. I highly recommend you try it and I suggest you get a reservation to avoid disappointment.

The tasting menu was excellent. Each course was beautifully prepared. Service was very good, friendly and perfect, without being pretentious. Lovely ambience. Interesting wines with each course and perfectly matched, except for the venison course. The meat was perfectly cooked and accompanied by a rich sauce with fruits but the Bordeaux red was thin and harsh. A good Rhone red would have been a better match for the richness of the food.

We wanted to have one really good dinner in Vienna and chose this small restaurant in the hope that it would be quiet. It was and also was an attractive design. We chose the tasting menu which seemed reasonably priced and matching wines. The food was beautiful and well balanced, the wine lovely and the service very efficient but unobtrusive. I needed a gluten free meal and that was no trouble, including the provision of the most delicious gf bread I have eaten in a while. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
