I would rate this place a 3.
7, but I'm rounding up to 4 stars overall. I made reservations about a month in advance for a Tuesday night at 7pm which is when they opened, we arrived about 5 minutes early and there was a line that wrapped around the corner of the restaurant already. I recommend getting a reservation beforehand if you want to try. I found this place before our trip to Italy on Tiktok and it seemed to be many tourist's fave place in Florence to get steak. Many locals say you have to try the Florentine steak because it's super delicious. I had very high expectations due to this and I thought the restaurant itself was a bit over-hyped, granted, coming from the States and having had A5 wagyu in Japan, I am a bit spoiled when it comes to very great quality steaks. The plus is that this place has big portions for steaks. Their 1 person Florentine steak which was basically a T Bone, was close to 2 Inches thick and about 60 euros. My husband and I shared it along with papperdelle Bolognese (I think roughly 20 euros?) which they said is made with wild boar but I couldn't tell the difference. We also ordered an artichoke salad along with some fried vegetables, roughly 12-16 euros each. Both forgettable but we were in desperate need of veggies after days of just carbs. In Italy they charge you for either still or sparkling water and they also add a coverage charge that's typically 2-5 euros per person. At this restaurant, they charged 5 extra per person. Ambiance is nice with an old rustic Italian feel and the servers all wear these suits so it makes it feel a lot fancier. I also had a glass of chianti red wine, as well, very good however due to this restaurant being a bit overpriced, it was about 10 euros which is a couple dollars more than other places. The server was pretty nice and they were quick to serve us our food. If you're traveling to Florence, I think it's worth trying the Florentine steak and papperdelle here. For two people, we spent roughly 135 euros which isn't horrible but expect to spend more here than other restaurants in Florence.

Yelp promoting me for a review, I thought I might have left on already. That said, my wife and I enjoyed our 7th anniversary dinner so much, I have no issue saying so again. Note: They have 2 seatings, so even with a ressie you will most likely have to queue up. See pics below. Once we got in everything was perfect, from our first chat to the host to paying the bill as we left. I had communicated when making the reservation that we were celebrating our 7th. When we got there it was like the whole restaurant knew it. We got a great table with plenty of room and a glass of Champagne, gratis, upon taking our seat. We had 3 courses, Pasta special, Florentine Steak and a Sea Bass, it was all amazing. We drank wine, Martinis and Lemoncello, and ate an amazing assortment of desserts. This is a special place and everyone who comes by respects that. Reservations are a must and plan to spend for the quality you will receive.

Is it possible that our group of 6 was unlucky enough that Buca Mario ran out of that fabulous Florentine steak that everyone in the reviews raves about -- and sourced some extras from the local low end "butcher"? We over-ordered -- and our server didn't find it necessary to advise us otherwise. Perhaps our doing so emboldened him to send TWO of the toughest steaks any of us had ever had to our table. No one wanted to embarass our friend who had recommended Buca Mario -- so no one spoke out during the dinner. On our way out I expressed our disapleasure discreetly to the server and he referred me to management -- resulting in two managers shrugging their shoulders -- no disappointment or surprise visible in their expression. Our appetizers were delicious. The sides also good as were the desserts. Sorry I can't remember what we ordered because the Classic Florentine Steak was such a disappointment that's really all I can remember. And that is why we went there -- prepared to pay a premium for what we were told by friends was the best steak in Florence. In hindsight, perhaps we should have sent the steaks back...wish we had. They obviously didn't think much of us to have risked their reputation and served those steaks. Sending it back could not have lowered their regard for us. In this age of online reviews, I thought the days of treating tourists differently because they were unlikely to return were long gone. Sadly, I was mistaken.

We were super excited to try this place, after hearing many great things. We found out that this establishment has been run by the same family since the 1800s! We had a reservation for a group of 4 and were seated right away. The staff was all very friendly, and the service was superb. - Bruschetta (4.5/5): So fresh, delicious, all you could want and more. - Charcuterie (5/5): Good portion size to share. Comes with cured meats and cheeses. We asked for bread on the side. - Fresh pasta (5/5): Best pasta. The pasta in Italy is so amazing and yummy, especially here . They make everything so fresh and so flavorful. It is delicious; it needs a minimal amount of sauce. The meat was perfect too. - Lasagna (5/5): Some of the best lasagna in Italy. I love this place. - Florentine steak for 2 (4/5): The steak we ordered rare, and it was delicious. I had pretty high expectations after hearing great things about the steak. It was cooked well. The only thing, because it was so large, I feel like it wasn't seasoned as well with the huge pieces. But still yummy. - Potatoes, and mushrooms (4/5): These were tasty. We were so full at this point we didn't have much of them.

Be the first to ReplyA five star fine dining experience all the way around.
With six in our party, we got to taste lots of things, and every one of them was delicious, complex in flavor, and cooked to perfection. Service is impeccable, and our waiter, Fabio, put on a beautiful performance. Seating at Buca Mario is comfortably spaced, but tables are congenially near one another. We saw most parties exchanging a kind word or an "ooh!" and a smile as a neighbor's meal arrived. The senior staff/possible owner came around at least twice to chat with guests and check on service, and the entire restaurant was filled with warmth and laughter by the end of the meal. This is an experience not to be missed...and the food is exceptional, as well.

This was my first time eating here and I had a fantastic dining experience. This classic Florentine restaurant has been open since 1886. You enter through a narrow door and go downstairs. They have multiple dining rooms and all have an intimate ambience like you are in their house. The service was friendly and impeccable. The food was outstanding and I can't wait to visit again. I would highly recommend this place. Ciao

If you are ever in Florence book a reservation!! I cannot recommend Buca Mario enough!! This place is outstanding!!! I would have never seen this cute, historical restaurant if it wasn't for another couple raving about this place! The staff treat you like family & have the best recommendations! The wine we had was so good, we ordered a case to be shipped home! The steak is cooked to perfection and just melts right in your mouth! As we looked around this cozy underground restaurant we seen that they have a Michelin star and we tasted every reason why they deserve it! Its easy to walk right by due to it being underground so keep an eye out for a stairway so you don't miss this gem! Its on a higher end budget-wise but worth every cent!
Be the first to ReplyBest steak I've ever had.
Hope you like your steak rare because that's how they cook it. But it melts in your mouth.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, good service.
Definitely get reservations. Everyone wants the Florentine steak but I enjoyed the pappa al pomodoro. The truffle pasta is definitely a must have. Be aware of how you tip. It's not necessary but encouraged (you might have to bring cash for tip). There are cheaper places to get this style of food, but this is a historic institution. I also like how they give you a souvenir apron at the end.

One of the best pastas I have ever had! Get the pasta with truffles! Buca Mario had a great atmosphere. The restaurant seems tiny from the outside but it didn't seem to end when we were walked to our table.

I have eaten at Buca Mario 3 times and each time the food and service was exceptional. I have also recommended it to friends traveling to Florence. Everyone is always pleased. Order the house special stuffed pasta with truffles.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and ambiance in this classic Florence
Great service and ambiance in this classic Florence restaurant. The line wrapped around the door before the spot opened, all reservations. The steak was good, but honestly we had better in Panzano... ossobuco was delicious. Asparagus was mushy for my liking, but the dessert cart made up for everything! We couldn't believe we found flan as good as my mexican mother in laws!

Buca Mario was one of my husband and I's favorites during our time in Florence. The atmosphere is very cool as the restaurant is underground basically so the ceiling is low and the doorways are lower. Service was a little slow to start but once they got going it was too notch, we absolutely loved our server - I wish I knew his name! We each ordered dirty martinis which were hard to come by in Italy as most people weren't sure what we meant by "dirty". Our server absolutely crushed it by bringing us a side of olive juice to pour in as we wanted - it was a dream! We got the prosciutto with balsamic app and it was great. My husband got the truffle pasta and it was good but was missing something we couldn't quite put our finger on. I got the wild boar pasta and it was out of this world delicious, so flavorful with thick chunks of meat. We ended with the tiramisu and it was truly unreal - a must get!! Overall we had a really great experience, would be 5 stars if my husbands dish was better but would definitely come back if we ever make it back to Florence.Editing to add that you need a reservation here! Book well in advance.

Me and my family came here for dinner and it was amazing! We had to wait 45 min (we didn't have a reservation) but it was totally worth it! We got the florentine steak and it was delicious, it doesn't need anything, it tasted great on its own! We also got a steak fillet, and that was yummy as well! Lastly, we got the curried shrimp and rice pelof (I don't remember exactly what it was called), and that was amazing as well! The potatoes tasted good as well! The desserts were amazing! I love how you just pick what you want from the options on the dessert tray. Our server was amazing! Unfortunately I don't remember his name but he was great! We came here for the florentine steak and we got it and so much more! Amazing restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyA known tourist stop - but locals eat there as well.
Excellent service and food. Highly recommend.

My family and I stayed at Hotel Orafi and they were able to get us a last minute reservation. This was our best meal in Italy so far! From the service to the wine to the meal itself. They also have the best balsamic vinegar. I've never had anything like it and I'm not even a big fan of balsamic vinegar. We also had the nicest waiter named Aldo and he made the experience even better.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Food was really good but doesn't live up to the hype I hate to say. Was here a decade ago and it killed!! That's why we came back. I get the whole thing about t-bone being med rare to rare and we asked if my daughter (21) could have it medium. Hers was rare to raw. We sent it back and it took forever and came back cold and not cooked at all. Didn't want to press the issue. We ordered individual T-bones in order to have it cooked to our liking. Mine which I ordered Med rare was raw. I ate it. It was like steak sushi/cubed carpaccio . Decent. The mashed potatoes with summer truffles was completely tasteless!! Lots of truffles for sure but zero flavor-zero. What a huge let down. Wife got the osso bucco which was good. Other Daughter got pasta Ragu which she said was bland. Nice wine selection and desserts were really good. The espresso martini was good too. Sad to say I wouldn't come back . Again, service was great

Wow! We were a table of 13 and everything was perfect! Pastas were delicious and the bistecca perfection. We were so impressed with the professional and friendly service.. Buca Mario is a must when in Firenze. Also the gift to the ladies at the end of the meal was so nice!!
Be the first to ReplyI love this place! The service was impeccable.
All the servers were attentive and very friendly. The food is amazing. I had the spaghetti and my boyfriend had the Tbone cooked rare per chef's recommendations. Tbone was cooked to perfection. Portions were huge. We also had the dessert flan which was TO DIE FOR. I will be dreaming about this flan when I go back to the US. Highly recommend this place. Make sure to make reservations before coming. They get pretty busy.
