Waste of money...
River ONCE.... A complete waste of time and money! The food was mediocre. The service was far from ideal, especially if you pay for a prefixed menu for two people - $300 (250 + 50 service fee) plus taxes (no refund!!). Drinks are not included, of course, so our bill for two was almost $450. This was one of the worst experiences, especially for the price. You do expect attention to detail and a real fine dining experience even if it's a more casual style. It felt more like a scam or a rip-off, honestly. So many flaws that I'm even too lazy to describe and put all that into writing. Most likely, the restaurant is going to reply in the same generic way as for others. I can additionally answer in this thread and give my "bullet points" about what exactly was bad. Otherwise, I won't even bother to waste more of my time. My advice - please READ FIRST the BAD REVIEWS; most of what was mentioned earlier was applicable in my case as well.

I have been eating out in Philadelphia for over 30 years. In that time, I have watched the Philadelphia food scene grow from “meh” - think steak houses, to where we are now, where I am literally spoiled for choice. Last night, I had the pleasure of dining here with my friend and his son. His son is a bit of a foodie, and he declared the meal to be one of the best he has ever had in his life. I am fortunate to have eaten at some very interesting places around the world and I have to say that this meal was up there with some of the best I have ever eaten. The combination of flavours and textures were outstanding on all of the dishes, even the dishes that did not cater to my specific preferences. I am not a big burger fan, but even I can tell that that menu item was exceptional. We even asked for a takeaway one for my friend’s other son who was not able to be there . Service was totally charming, attentive, knowledgeable, and with a twinkle… Obviously, we had the tasting menu, but we also added all of the suggested additions which made for a full blown experience. There seems little point in listing what we ate because by its very nature, a tasting menu changes on a regular basis. Suffice to say that based on last night‘s performance, we would trust chef and his brigade to deliver consistently and confound expectations. The price point is reasonable for what you get and I am sure that next time I am back in Philly, regretfully not until next year, I will be a return visitor.

This is serious fine dining in a hipster disguise. Surprised no reviews here in over a year. In a transitional neighborhood off the tourist beat. Bad news is there is no menu choice; everyone gets the 4 course set menu, seafood-focused, with option of additions. Good news is every one of the dishes was exceptional, even the one that sounded questionable as described. Real talent in the kitchen behind the bar. Extra credit for Grateful Dead on the playlist. Most highly recommended and well worth the price for this quality.

Oh my god! What?! Come on now! Are you kidding me?! My life has been changed! All of the above were exclaimed last night in between bites at the Chef’s Counter at River Twice. River Twice is the kind of restaurant that will ruin every other dining experience for you. It’s just dunking over the competition course after course. It’s not fair how good every aspect of this restaurant is. River Twice is truly special. Special. For any special occasion, or if you just want to feel special, and you are fortunate enough to afford it, treat yourself to the Chef’s Counter menu with wine pairings by Ben and be prepared for a life-changing experience. I won’t walk through every course, because I think the joy, the sheer joy, of this restaurant is its ability to surprise you with every bite (and sip). If you have an adventurous spirit and palate and trust River Twice to take care of you (which you should), you will not be disappointed. There are few components and ingredients that my wife typically avoids or does not care for, but in River Twice’s hands they turn them into gold, and my wife is now a convert who can’t stop thinking about these dishes. Special. Life changing. And Ben is a wizard with the wine pairings! Perfect every time. New (to us) and exciting wines that we would never have tried before. German wines? Rieslings?! He nailed it. I want Ben to follow me to every restaurant from now on and offer me the perfect pairing. But that’s silly, because why would I eat at any other restaurant? All of the staff and chefs behind the counter were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, easy to talk with, and I hope they found enjoyment in our enjoyment of what they were putting out. We could’ve stayed for hours and chatted with them about food, art, French rap music, you name it. We lived in NYC for ten years and ate at many “Good” restaurants during our time there, but never have we been so thoroughly delighted than at River Twice. I don’t know how they do all that they do out of that small kitchen. It’s miraculous. That’s not true. It’s not a miracle. It’s a ton of hard work, excellent sourcing, years of experience, and trust in their team of collaborators. Thank you River Twice. I hope you know how special you are. And yes, the Mother Rucker is as good as everyone says it is. Better even.

The courtesy of a welcoming call ahead of the day was just an introduction to this sublime and simple appearing experience. From the music to the attention to every detail of the experience this was perfect. We had the tasting menu which included many of the menu items and each bite was an explosion of creativity. Everyone there was so lovely, and the fact you saw they were friends and happy speaks volumes about the chef and the restaurant. The closest we ever saw this was at Le Petit Littré in Paris. A restaurant where the joy was in palpable in the quality and creativity enjoyed. Where you feel you can sit down and talk with an on-site chef who deserves the title and a well-priced journey to culinary adventure.

The food here is absolutely beautiful. If you want to have food art,, this is the place. I'm so happy to be here. I would highly recommend the tasting menu. The flavors are amazing and creative. Some of the dishes needed just a bit more zip though. You can see where they were going with a dish, but sometimes for just a bit short. Maggie took very good care of us. Her wine pairings were masterful. The menu changes on a frequent basis. We will be back.

I was really looking forward to this restaurant last night. After hearing all the wonderful reviews! I’ve never been so disappointed in a restaurant in my life. The food is overpriced and my small dishes were not very good at all. There are very small options unless you want to do the tasting menu. Bottle of spring water was $18. Decor is lacking. The waitress was busy and had a bad attitude. There are no accommodations for anything on the tasting menu or anything in the restaurant for that matter.

The highlight of this byob restaurant is its tasting menu at $80 per person. There was some fun creativity and some surprise flavors but far too many fell short. And most of all there just wasn’t a unified theme or vision. We honestly were missing the chef’s point of view so the food felt pretentious and soulless. Sorry, but at that price you got to bring the goods.

I have mixed feelings about dinner here. The overall feeling of the place, as well as the staff, was an alive and vibrant one. Everyone was very interested in explaining the various dishes as they were brought out with the presentation of each being well thought out. Most if not all the tables were taken as well as the seats at the chef's counter. The food, however, didn’t have that Wow factor for us. The outstanding items were the Tartar of Lamb and the Whole Roasted Sea Bream. The Texas Toast with allium ash & nigella seed butter was very good. The Chawanmushi sounded different and interesting. This was Uni, Smoked Dulse (seaweed), on an egg custard. Once the uni was gone so was most of the flavor. The dry aged Muscovy Duck was a disappointment. The bill before tip came to around $115. I don’t know if I would be in a rush to return but would tell anyone to give it a try. Like I said, it was almost full the entire time we were there. (Remember - it’s a BYO)
