The big rowdy was the perfect thing to have post drinking.
Full of carbs to get you a bit sober, and the heat really wakes you up. The chicken is moist and crispy. The bun is fluffy, but it gets soggy and pulled apart by the sauce. They don't mess with their spice. The medium was plenty spicy. Good thing the scallion yogurt helped to cool it down a bit. You can really taste the mint it the mint cilantro. It's a pretty messy chicken sandwich, but they have wet wipes! Be prepared to take your food on the road. The space is tiny, and there's a lot of traffic coming into this store. However, the chicken sandwich is worth it.

Don't underestimate their spice level! I ordered a Big Rowdy at a 4 spice level and couldn't finish (although I badly wanted to because it was just sooo good). This sandwich is amazingly good cold, too, and I still struggled to finish it the next day because of how spicy it was. Nevertheless, it's a chicken sandwich that's super well done and is bold in how it presents Indian food, much like the rest of its sister Unapologetic Foods restaurants.

Warning! the food might be spicier than you think!! (NOTE: I have a really high spice tolerance compared to most Desi people and have no problem eating things with ghost pepper/signed waiver). I've been here twice and felt that the spice level wasn't consistent. Level 3 (Andhra/Rebel/Hot): I tried this the first time and thought it was the right amount of spice. My friends thought it was super spicy though.Level 4 (Kerala/Rouge/Extra hot): I got this the 2nd time around since I could handle more than level 3 and my family is originally from Kerala. HUGE mistake...I could only have one bite and eyes were watering. Let's not talk about how our stomachs felt after chugging water and ice cream. What happened here? Did they accidentally give us level 5?? There shouldn't be that big of a jump between level 3/4 and def didn't represent the spice level for kerala. If I can't eat it then I have a hard time believing someone else is.So...my suggestion is go with a level lower than you think you should. Maybe ask for chili on the side if you need to add more. There is a lot more breading than chicken -- was expecting a juicier piece. Also would be nice if there was more Raita. We also tried the potato pakora (just okay - would prefer masala fries?)Overall, think this place has potential like their other restaurants but not quite there for me.

Wow, I stumbled across this place while walking with friends and we finally got a chance to try it and it doesn't not disappoint! Be warned they do not joke about their spices, I got the #2 and it creeps up on you. The employees are also super nice and we kind enough to fill out waters.

Not much of a wait at 12:30pm on a Sunday but the next hour brought on a small queue and a particularly motivated woman laying claim to our coveted seats. - Lil' Rowdy Sandwich with Rogue Level Heat: Crispy, tender, hot, juicy chicken. Whatever juices/oils seeping out were quickly soaked into the porous pao bread. The spiciness pierced through with each tiny bite, of which I likely took on the order of hundreds to stave off the compounding heat of a square centimeter. Maybe I would've fared better with the middle spice level but it wasn't anything a few nibbles of chickpea chaat (fresh and flavorful!) and 4 glasses of water couldn't neutralize. By the way, I would recommend the restaurant to use plastic cups 500% larger than the current sized ones. Much appreciated. - Eggplant Pakora: Crunchy outer, molten inner. Perfectly salted and seasoned. Can't ask much more from a pakora. A tad heavy on the oil.A friend in attendance with particular tastes and peculiar restrictions remarked on the pleasant aroma of the place. No, she did not ever cave and sample even a single bite here but the sentiment was one of approval. I personally would continue to give my business to this gem even if it meant going into credit card debt! Definitely will be coming back.
Be the first to ReplyThe chicken is HOT.
With that out of the way, this place is a really fun, casual Indian chicken joint. The main attraction was the chicken sandwich, but buyer beware... anything 3 and up is actually pretty spicy. Like 1 is mild, 2 is medium, 3 is hot, etc. The flavor and the fry on the boneless dark meat chicken thigh was perfect and I will be looking forward to trying a level 1 spicy. The eggplant pakora was also a pleasant surprise. Don't shoot me but the slice and texture of the fried eggplant reminds me of a fried eggplant for eggplant parm. The counter folks are super friendly and amicably steered our group away from making the mistake of ordering a level 5 spicy. I'm sweating just thinking about it.

Super crispy and crunchy chicken season with chutney and Indian herbs. The fluffy sandwich buns stayed crispy and toasted through my entire meal! I personally would have preferred more acid yogurt sauce with the chicken sandwiches but it was still really delicious. We order two of the chicken sandwiches and the mango lassi which were serve quickly. You pay at the front register and can seat at one of the three table inside or take it to go. They even have little alcohol pad for you clean you hand after the meal. Super detail oriented place, will be back to try more of their menu.

Rowdy Rooster is straightforward, and this review will be as well! Great food for an affordable price thats packed with flavor! I've had the Vada Pao, Lil Rowdy, and potato pakora. All were delicious, and would order again!

First time coming to visit Rowdy Rooster and I was glad that I went. Ordered the big Rowdy with #4 spice (Kerala). Did not disappoint! Do yourself a favor and visit! I will be back!

I have heard such good things about the fried chicken so I had to go and check it out. As a fan of their other restaurants we were very excited to go. Staff was friendly, the menu compact. You have the option of either chicken fingers or chicken sandwiches. All the food comes heavily sauced and spiced. Definitely a yogurt marinade, tandori style situatiom going on and then once fried, its covered again in a rich and spicy sauce. There are varying degrees of spice. I went the second hottest and was warned by staff. While it was certainly hot it was not unbearable. But certainly among the hottest dishes that's being served in new york. I am looking at you Sigiri and Brick Lane. What was shocking to me was how hot the kids option was. I would say that is comically hot for a kids menu. My 8 year old has been raised properly so he loved his fingers but, i would say its equal to Serrano Pepper hot while my dish was thai pepper hot. Well I couldn't imagine how many Attempted returns the kids meal has had. But like the kids meal and my meal, the sauce wasLike dumped on. It was over loaded. My wife ordered the chicken sandwich and The bun was my favorite part. It was a heavily Spiced bun that was the color of tumeric. It's hard not to talk about this place without thinking about Namkeen. Namkeen has even more spicy chicken, is more balanced and i think the superiorOption. While I think Rowdy Rooster is a spice lovers dream, it seems more focused on beating you over the head than going for a nuanced assault. Love the indian soda options

Looking forward to summer nights to enjoy your chicken in the nearby park!

Can't say enough good things about this restaurant!! Food: all items on their short menu are delicious! As a someone who grew up in India, can confirm that this is authentic street food. We got the Big Rowdy, Vada Pao, and the Chili Cauliflower - excellent crunch and bursting with flavor. Chick Fil A got nothing on this. Portions are just right. With almost everything around $10, this is excellent value for money. Hospitality: very quick service, fast turnover on the tables so we didn't have to wait long. The peppy Bollywood playlist with old and new hits is the perfect complement to the buzzing, fast paced "street like" atmosphere. Had a lovely conversation with Chef Soham at the end to seal the deal. You won't be disappointed!!

Every food joint these guys open is 5/5 (Dhamaka, Semma and of course Adda). These guys just don't miss.Chintan was at the front counter when I went, super nice guy.

Pretty small spot with not a lot of seats. Picked up the food got the big rowdy with the rowdy spice level. Everyone was shocked I got the spiciest level but I really enjoyed it! The sandwich was one of the best I've had! Reasonable prices too. If you are not a spicy person beware of the levels though. I eat a lot of spicy food so the highest worked for me. My other friends got the medium one though and were dying

Tried this for the first time yesterday in our halal fried chicken food crawl. The chicken sandwich was really different and had so much more substance and flavor than other fried chicken joints. I loved the bun and the option of small vs large sandwich. I ordered medium spice for the sandwich and thought it was delicious. The chili cauliflower was way too spicy for me.

My new favorite spot in the East Village! I feel like an idiot for not taking any pictures, but when I saw how good the food looked/smelled, the phone wasn't eating first. The staff was so friendly, the food came out fairly quick. Great twist of fried chicken and Indian food. I got a big rowdy sandwich and got it spicy, and it was... SPICY (which i love). Definitely a great spot for your chicken fixing, definitely going back.

This place sells out - come early to get your choice of menu items. They were out of the Lil Rowdy on a Sunday about 5pm. Small place - only about 4 tables with chairs to sit - so plan to takeout or wait for a table. The line takes up extra space around the tables - most people wait outside for food. Sandwich was a burst of flavor in each bite, crunchy in the right places and overall delicious. We got the chili cauliflower and 2 big rowdys.Spice level: I eat spicy food everyday and I'm telling you rogue had me crying - it overpowered the taste after 4 bites (it is described as "slap on your face" on the menu and it is not a lie). My partner got a rebel and he couldn't stop gushing about it. Get the rebel for full flavor appreciation 100% of the time.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible.
We came and ordered most of the menu -- the big rowdy (with rowdy sauce), the smooth operator (with rebel sauce), chili cauliflower, vada pao, eggplant pakora, potato pakora, and a mango lassi. All of it was amazing, and very, very spicy -- I generally like my heat at an 8 or 9/10 and the rowdy sauce may have gotten to a 10. (The rest was probably between a 5 and a 7.) I'd love to get all of it again, but I think the move on my next trip will be the smooth operator, cauliflower, vada pao, and eggplant pakora. The potato pakora was good too, but we all preferred the eggplant. I also loved the sandwich, but between that and the smooth operator, I think I'd prefer the latter -- the chicken itself is pretty perfect and I'm not sure it needs the extras.I will say, the vada pao was maybe the best bite of the whole meal -- really incredible, and a must on future visits. I also loved the mango lassi, although I think the ones at their full-service restaurants are better. In terms of the heat levels, I might try the rogue next time, which is the middle version. I love heat, but I do think that everything being hot makes it difficult because there's nothing to use as a cool down. I don't think I'd stick to rebel, but I'd only get the rowdy if I had something to use as a chaser.

I feel like Rowdy Rooster is going you be a you either love it or hate it spot, and I absolutely loved it. Like Dhamaka, the spice application is unapologetic - I found that the 3 different levels they offer (rebel, rogue, and rowdy) are actually not that different. We ordered Boneless chicken (rebel), bone-in chicken (rogue), large chicken sandwich (rowdy), Eggplant Pakora and scallion yogurt chutney. The flavors were spicy, salty, complex, and powerful - every bite seemed a bit new and made me crave another. The fry on both the chicken and the eggplant were crisp, though both were a bit on the oily side. The mint chutney was standard but the scallion yogurt was new to me and delicious. Be careful not to overorder (this was way too much for 2) as the spice and oiliness means you'll probably eat less than you'd expect.

This place was popping on a Saturday and after trying the food I can see whySome spots to sit inside ... if you can snag a spot. You order and wait about 15 mins for your food to be ready. A lot of folks were waiting outside since it's such a small spot- I wish they had speakers outside so that when orders are ready people can hear their name from outside. The spice level is truly spicy which I love so make sure you prepared yourself if you do try their spiciest level - that's what I got for the chicken sandwich and it was everything and more. Chicken was crispy, spicy, and flavorful. Vada pav was actually spicy too, even though you can't customize the spice level. Mango lassi is also worth getting, cool down your mouth from all that spicy and flavorful food!

Stopped by here after noticing it as a new spot on my walk home. This place is tiiiinnyyy, a hole in the wall for sure, maybe enough seating for 20 people and it's a tight fit. On that note, the whole space gets crowded quick, between the people sitting, the people ordering, and the people waiting for their food after ordering. That was a bit annoying, but it's a new spot, so I'm hoping they iron out something that's more efficient. On to the important part.... The food! I got the Big Rowdy and the Masala corn. Honestly the corn was just ok... I probably won't order it again. Wasn't bad just wasn't anything special. The sando though, wow!! So yummy and well cooked. And SPICY! I'm ok with spice so I got the medium level but oooofff I was chugging water. I personally like the struggle hah, but just be wary if you can't handle spice. Will definitely come back, but will get a different side and try and check to make sure it's more empty when I go.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best sandwiches ive ever had.
Its basically a nashville hot sandwich with way more flavor. I got the middle spice level and it was very spicy so i'd be careful if you dont like spice. The bread was so unique and the chili cauliflower is one of the best sides ive ever had. The Dhamaka team has done it again and i hope this becomes one of the staples of NYC.
