What a gem! My friend lives in the LES so she comes in often but it was my first time. According to her they change up their wines almost every week and their food is delicious (though small portions and a bit pricey). We shared the flight of a white, orange, and red Ukrainian wines and they were great! My friend also ordered the vermouth which she described as fruity and tasty. Our server was very knowledgeable about the wines and even provided us with separate glasses to share the fight. When we sat down, he also poured us a tasting of a yummy sparkling rose from Austria described in the menu as "hi-toned electric princess juice" which was my favorite of the night because I'm a hi-toned electric princess. Will return and would highly recommend to anyone looking to try some unique natural wines!

i loved the ambiance and the service- as a group of 8 who were a little vegetarian shy, we didn't know what to order and the waiter took care of it, relieving us from the stress of deciding between the many unique dishes. we got a little bit of everything and each dish was curated with a rich, balanced flavor, without being too much of anything. we were thoroughly impressed and found ourselves really enjoying the dishes we actually didn't have high hopes for based on our past experiences with certain foods (e.g., baloney dish was surprisingly good!) egg dish was also amazing. i probably wouldn't come back before trying other spots in the area but for wine and casual bites, absolutely. thanks ruffian!
Be the first to ReplyHopped in here for some out of the ordinary wine options.
While they do serve dinner, we were not dining and opted for the seating option in the outside structure. 2 bottles of Austrian wines - an orange and a slightly effervescent red. The staff is quite knowledgeable of the wine gems and have the descriptions nailed down. The fact that the love what they do is obvious in the discussion of the wine, the region, the vineyard and grape. Time well spent. Out the door having had 2 bottles for roughly-$280.
Be the first to Replywent here on a whim for date night.
the ambiance is cozy and inviting, with low light and subtle decor. our server was beyond attentive and knew the wine and food menu like the back of his hand. we had no idea what we were looking for from a drink but he recommended a georgian orange wine after asking us a few questions about our preferences. it might have been the best wine i've ever had? will definitely be back again! highly recommend for a nice date or if you are looking for a more laid back quiet resturant to get dinner with a friend and catch up... great acoustics too.

Had my first date with my girlfriend here, so definitely a sentimental place for me, but sentimental bias aside, this is probably my favorite wine bar in the city! Super cute vibe all around; whether you're in the bar area, the dining room next door, or in the outdoor parklet, you're definitely gonna enjoy the space. I had the course menu the first time I went here. It's a lighter, vegetable-forward small-plates menu. Definitely advise you to not come here hungry if you're coming here for dinner. The dessert was impressive but otherwise the food was good but not super memorable. Of course, you're here for the wine. And they have a great selection of natural wines, including the stuff you've had a bunch before vs. really unique wines with notes you didn't think would make sense but somehow do (I had a very vegetable-y Chardonnay on my first visit and were surprised and impressed). The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable about wine and will always offer a good recommendation, along with being super friendly and attentive. This is one of my favorite places to take friends visiting from out of town and it's never disappointed!

I finally had the chance to try the tasting menu at Ruffian, which is an all vegetarian, mostly vegan, tapas-style dining experience and wine bar. They used to offer kombucha but no longer do. Instead, we started with a round of their nonalcoholic "tonics" and enjoyed the one with goldenrod, raspberry leaf, and pennyroyal. We were then delighted with the amuse-bouche of grilled castelvetrano olives, braised dates, and orange slices. Next we had the roasted cauliflower dish that was most notable for the fried caper berries - salty but delicious little things! Possibly the best dish was the basil-mint malfatti (gnocchi-like little dumplings served with fresh basil and grilled romaine). We added the spinach garlic dip to our tasting menu and enjoyed it; the papadum crackers used as dippers were innovative and fun. Lastly we had the poppy sable dessert with sunflower cream, which was fresh and delicious. Overall, I enjoyed the experience here. The food is vegetable-forward, well-seasoned, and strikes a balance between innovative touches and comforting familiar flavors. I'm not sure how quickly I would return unless they added a bunch of new menu items, but I would definitely keep this on the list of places to bring a friend on a special occasion, and it is food that even a non-vegan or non-vegetarian would enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyTasting menu is a great price, creative vegetarian cuisine.
Food is excellent just not my type. Vegetables cooked in unique spices. Beautiful interior

went here with four people, 2 of us had heard of it and were excited - the wine was very good. ambiance was decent. the food was not good, generally like everything was kind of a swing and a miss at fancifying something simple - like smoked dolmas, the smoke didnt do anything but dry out the dolmas and the flavors did not have much synergy. that egg dish was the same, was like $37 for basically a medium okay deviled egg.
Be the first to ReplySuch an amazing experience.
The items we tried were all so delicious! Definitely would highly recommend for a taste test for your palette. Superb! Thank you so much for such great hospitality and delicious cuisine. Much love, Flea

I had heard a lot of hype around Ruffian for the past year or so, and was excited to try it out.All in all, the wine was very good, the food was okay, but the prices felt like a ripoff. I understand it is manhattan, and I have no problem paying up for food, but $26 for 4 tiny spinach dumplings feels insane to me. Similarly, the wine also felt somewhat expensive, however I can appreciate that they carry lots of rare eastern European wines that you can't really find elsewhere. I am fine with the wine prices, but much more turned off by the food prices.I would recommend coming here to try one of their orange natural wines, but would definitely skip the food.

Awesome wine bar specializing in natural wines from Eastern Europe, which, as far as I'm aware, is the only wine bar in NYC to do so. The wine list is long and they don't always categorize by flavor profile, but the staff here are very helpful in providing recommendations and they will likely give you tastings of different bottles to help you choose. We got a bottle of Slovakian pet nat that was absolutely delicious. Also for a wine bar, they serve amazing food too. The food menu is small (about 10 or so dishes) and consists of mostly appetizer portion shared plates. We ordered a Georgian-style porcini mushroom soup dumpling that could have fooled me that it was vegetarian. The khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread topped with a runny egg) was also a highlight among the dishes we ordered. And of course, everything paired excellently with the wine!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals I had in 2022.
Inventive, delicious, and the service was topnotch. We sat at the bar and had the added pleasure of watching the kitchen. Ruffian has my highest praise.

The wines and food were exquisite! Unfortunately, or visit started poorly. Got there a few minutes early. We're dismissed because of a staff meeting. Wouldn't have minded a bit of a wait, but we were left standing in the pouring rain. Could not make a reservation for 6 using their reservation service, but manager said she would accommodate us. We had to vacate our table in one hour and 15 minutes. So much for a leisurely dinner! Particularly enjoyed the Slovenian wines offered by the bottle. The beets, eggplant and mushroom small plates were absolutely fantastic. Our waiter, not so much. Very pretentious. Manager was gracious giving her card to reserve a table for 6 next time and a recommendation for a great restaurant in the neighborhood, Frank.

Well I absolutely inhaled the potato & onion dumplings, while my friend delighted in the Cabbage Patch (watercress gnocchi, seared cabbage, roasted maitake). Then, as the dessert glutton that I am, I had the PSL - an almond cake with pumpkin slice glaze and Ottoman coffee ice cream which tasted so delicious that I felt I could run an empire. Finally, the red was Rawlins Tarllc from Armenia - it hits you good, so don't recommend for a work day but go off on the weekend.Service by Taylor deserves a shout-out because was on it, was quirky, gave us space to chat, and effortlessly convinced us on the wines & dishes.

Excellent wine and the tapas are very creative - but almost too creative. Me and my friend were hungry for a solid meal and the unique flair in each dish was interestinf, but didn't curb our hunger.

The cozy dim lit but still upbeat ambiance at the bar is exactly what you would hope for from a small wine bar restaurant. The food is quite original with most of their menu being vegetarian & gluten free. Would definitely come back for the wine and ambiance but wouldn't run back for the food.
Be the first to ReplyThe menu was so unique and the ambiance was great.
I wish the servers were slightly more knowledgable about the wines, but besides from that, everything was spectacular!
Be the first to ReplyThis is the best restaurant in New York for my taste.
Having done the tasting menu and wine pairing three times, I can attest that every dish is carefully composed and wholly unique. The pairings are wonderfully interesting and enhance the meal, and the servers are uniformly knowledgeable in describing the wines. A meal at Ruffian just feels special. If you aren't going for the tasting menu, absolutely order a dessert. Every Ruffian dessert I've tried has been transcendently delicious.

Ruffian in the East Village is a Michelin Bib Gourmand wine bar serving vegetable-forward, seasonally-inspired dishes alongside an extensive menu of natural wines. We went for the the affordably-priced tasting menu at $39 for three courses and added the optional wine pairings for an additional $39. The tasting began with endive salad with sunchoke purée and a fresh, citrusy dressing. The second course was an English pea gnocchi with snap peas and topped with crispy enoki mushrooms. The dessert course was a rhubarb-rose tart with buckwheat cookie crust. We also sampled several of the a la carte options including the "All Black Everything", a black lentil and fermented black bean hummus, smoked carrot tartar, and "Fowl Play", a delicious duck terrine en croute served over dijonaise and garnished with aspic herb salad. The meal was delicious, fresh and paired beautifully with the unique selection of natural wines on the menu. We love this place for an intimate date or special occasion dinner

Came for dinner and the place was so quiet! It was the day *after* Valentine's, to be fair. It's hard to say what people know Ruffian for: it's wine menu or it's food, fortunately moving away from the tasting menu allowed ample opportunity for trying as much of both as possible! The in dreams cauliflower dish (not pictured) was my favorite, but the chestnut dumplings were a close second. I was particularly excited to see a South African white on the glass menu (Bosman Adama) which was lovely and the Klaus Lenstch 'Bachgart' Pinot Noir was amazing and the staff was great at helping us navigate all our decisions. Treat yourself to a visit here!
Be the first to ReplyPretty good food, very flavorful, tends to be carbs based.
Mostly vegetarian options. A little on the pricier side.

She paired my wine with my food for me and gave us great recommendations. Highly highly recommend and ask for her! Great vibes all around!

I'm giving ruffian 4 stars for the wine because they have a great selection, but I have to say I was really disappointed with the food. I don't think we realized it's a mostly vegan menu. There's extremely limited options and I've had better Georgian food at other places in the city.
