Sailor Restaurant Oban Reviews from The Last Year
I went to Mr.
Obanyaki one last time before it closed. The lady was friendly and it was sad to see it go. The wheel cakes taste so good and are a treat.
Went by today since I felt like trying obanyaki.
Located at Monterey Park Galleria, it can be easily seen from the street. Parking is packed so you have to park inside the garage. The guy and woman behind the counter were very friendly and welcoming. I ordered: red bean, Nutella, and Mac n cheese obanyakis. Also, an ube horchata to drink. It took 15 mins which was fine since I didn't mind waiting. The obanyakis were really good, wasn't expecting the Mac and cheese one to be a little spicy. The ube horchata was refreshing and had great flavor. I'm sad that you guys will be closing but wish you the best of luck for the next chapter.

The food was ok and the service was pretty bad I guess I wasn't the only one that complaining. Today was my 1st time going there and I didn't what to order and they were kind rude or don't care .... Probably cause they are about to closed the business
Finally tried Mr Obanyaki! I'll be sad to see it go!!! Love
Finally tried Mr Obanyaki! I'll be sad to see it go!!! Love the fresh hot custard filled desserts w/ a side of cold ice cream.

Obanyaki is about 3-4 dollar each, which is pretty good considering they are made fresh to order. The pancake has good texture. Filling is smooth and taste not overly sweet. Custard and nutella is always the hubby's favorite. I like the matcha coconut and suprisingly red bean. Usually red bean is too thick and too bean-y, but this one hits. I won't bother with the odd one's like mac n cheese. Boba milk tea is ok. Drink is not that good. For 6 bucks not worth it. They will close at the end of the month, so they don't offer much- only the main obanyaki flavors and drinks. They're the only solid obanyaki spot in the area, so it's kinda sad.

Food was okay but the service is enough to make me not want to come back. I guess they don't care since they're closing anyhow. The drink was made from powder because there were still clumps of powder in my milk tea.

I don't like leaving bad reviews because this place seems family owned however, the moment my family and I walked in the younger man working today on Sunday 3/17 behind the counter was extremely rude. My mom and I greeted the man and he stood quiet with a serious face. No big deal, maybe he didn't hear us? Next, we start asking questions about the ice cream as it was our first time here. He seemed irritated the whole time answering our questions. I asked him if they had the Cookie Monster flavor and with the biggest attitude he tells us there's no flavors or toppings available because they're closing soon. I was ready to walk out from how rude he was but my son really wanted the ice cream. Mind you I checked google while I'm waiting for the ice cream and it shows they close in an hour and a half. This guy obviously lacks basic customer service skills. He has the audacity to be so rude and is just stuck on his phone watching videos. Other than his attitude the bread is undercooked and watery. The ice cream was good though.

Stopped by here since I heard about this place through the SGV Eats FB group. Decided to give it a try since I heard they will be closing by the end of this month and my mom wanted to try their obanyaki. The plaza has a parking lot so there's plenty of places to park. By the time we had arrived, they had sold out their black sesame and taro Obanyaki which was a bit sad. The owners speak Cantonese so it felt like home since that's my parents' native language. Regardless we got the three obanyaki for $10.50 (after tax) deal. There is a $1 charge if you use credit card. Keep in mind, there is a wait time of 15 minutes as they make it fresh. It was piping hot when they served it to us. We ordered the following items: 1) Custard Obanyaki: 6/10 The custard was good but personally I felt like the custard just tasted like Beard Papas filling. I liked how it wasn't too sweet though. 2) Red Bean Obanyaki: 8/10 This was my favorite out of the three. I liked how the red bean wasn't too hard nor mushy and was the right consistency. Other places usually add sugar to it but I think this was perfect sweetness. 3) Matcha Coconut Obanyaki: 4/10 Not a huge fan but again my personal preference. If this was matcha red bean though, I'd probably have a different review but the coconut and matcha was a bit weird for me and coloring wise was a bit dull. I wanted to try their horchata as that seemed interesting but they no longer do the BOGO for their drinks. Best of luck to this dessert shop and the owners for their future endeavors! Thank you!
Obanyaki called taikoyaki is Japanese treat only place
Obanyaki called taikoyaki is Japanese treat only place making those in downtown little Tokyo on third Street very popular place but lately their inside anko getting smaller When I tried mr obanyaki it was good amount of anko and also curry was great owner said most popular is custard. I didn't buy but must be good. He started making after I ordered so took long time to make He need to entertaining while people waiting even music video or game board or anything hope to see you success
Terrible service.
What makes you so miserable and grumpy? We were the only customers there, but instead of greeting us or meeting us at the register, the man just stood there slowly mixing the batter. After finally walking over to us, still mute, I began to order. He snapped, "no black sesame," and went back to his silent, annoyed look. We thanked him and just left. Obanyakis are Japanese, so I hope no one thinks this establishment is Japanese because this rude service makes us look bad...

Such a hidden gem! Their sweet fillings are delish (my faves are Nutella and Custard) but their savory fillings are top notch! Definitely try their curry corn and mac&cheese fillings! The wheel cake itself is chewy and cooked perfectly. As these are made-to-order, the 15-20 min wait may seem long but it's so worth it when you see the attention and care that goes into making these little cakes of joy, delivering the highest level of satisfaction! Oh! Don't forget to get a drink as well! My fave is the Hokkaido milk tea!
Super cute mom and pop desserts.
New limited time savory options too. Always great service with fresh and tasty Japanese obanyaki.
It was such a cute stop near ELAC.
Yummy ice cream and dessert sandwiches. The shovel was a cute touch!
Yay for wheel cakes! Not so yay about service.
As much as I love the idea, I feel like my experience was lukewarm. Now this is my personal experience, and I'm sure everyone else's is different, but this was my first time and there wasn't much energy. I believe I saw the owner, but he didn't really make an effort nor did he seem enthusiastic about having a customer there. And I don't want to come off rude, so let me explain with my review! Wheel cakes have been a big part of my childhood and I grew up with those wheel cakes at the San Gabriel market with that nice lady and her little stand. I'm pretty sure a lot of people in the area remember her, so it's nice to have a place around that can make them. For the actual product, it's decent. I do wish they were crispier on the outside. There's a good amount of filling inside though. Much thicker than expected. I do love the idea that it's fresh, but it can be difficult waiting 15 minutes. I was not in a rush at all so not a problem for me. However, I feel like for others who are on the go, maybe you can have some premade beforehand just in case! I think that would be really helpful. I noticed that they don't do grubhub or Uber eats either, and I understand that it may be questionable when there's a middle man in between sending out your food. However, I do feel that if sealed properly, it should be okay so people don't steal or mess with it. Or use something else like toast so people can order beforehand. It's always good to expand where you make money. Of course quality won't be as good as when it's fresh, but it's to be expected! There's unfortunately no Apple Pay, Google, Samsung. It's only cash or card and with card they charge a $1 fee. People sometimes don't have card or cash on them so this would be a big bonus. Now I was a little skeptical since no gloves were changed throughout the order, touching of raw batter, the taking of my card, touching the register, the making of the wheel cakes. This was all done with only one glove on. I work at a hospital and I've seen what people have on their hands and their items, so that's me being really paranoid and a germaphobe. And what solidified my stance was when he called to say my order was ready. I picked them up and said thank you! No response. No you're welcome or acknowledgement. Then I walked to the door and then he said, "Keep the bag open." I turn and look at him, and he does this motion with his hands. I am just standing there and say, "Oh. Okay??" He says nothing after that. No have a good day or thanks for stopping by. No customer service no friendliness, nothing. It was just an overall strange experience. Side note, I understand that business might be slow in the afternoon, but it's very off putting if you're playing a video/podcast about the lakers out loud with a customer there. And when I say this, I don't mean oh I walked in and it wasn't busy and you were watching a video before I came in. I'm saying, hey you have a customer waiting, and then after they order you start playing the video out loud. Maybe use AirPods or headphones instead. All in all, I felt a lack of care for the customers. I understand the importance of what you're producing, but it's also important to focus on the service provided as well. Edit: I originally gave 3/5, but ultimately I decided on a 2/5. Goodness. Immediately after my review, I got an aggressive reply from the owner. It was an experience that I had from the establishment that could have been miscommunication and could be cleared up easily if we just spoke. I was suggesting a few things that may or may not improve business, but I am not telling you how to run it. Yes, you are right, I am not your mother. I apologize for the unsolicited advice. And I'm sorry I am unable to see under your mask to see if you are smiling, I could only see the nose and up. As for the gloves, there was one glove on your right hand, and I saw that you touched the register, the batter, your phone, the cakes. For that, I know is certain.

A cute little shop - went here around 3:30 since I was running errands nearby and was happy to see they are open. A cute shop with a simple menu (buy one get one 50 percent off drinks btw)- i opted for the 3 obanyaki options - nutella, custard, black sesame and they were great! Fyi though the wait is 15 minutes. I did ask how business is going and the owner pointed to the empty chairs. I hope they stay open.

When getting our food there was a bit of a wait but I didn't mind since there is a seating area. The matcha obanyaki was pretty good and I loved the Cookie Monster ice cream. The ube horchata was ok tho, haven't tried their other drinks.
HORRIBLE DINNER - Breakfast ok
We had booked dinner upon arrival at reception at the hotel for that evening. When we arrived for dinner, they acted as if we hadn't, and were "put out" about it. There were very few diners in the very large restaurant, other than 2 large tables filled with bus tours. We then understood why... My husband's soup was mushroom and chicken; when he couldn't find the chicken, he was told it was pureed with the mushrooms. He was not impressed. We had to ask multiple times for water on the table; staff more concerned about cleaning off tables which were not needed, rather than check back with us on our needs. He ordered the steak, cooked medium, but it came out well-done, dried out, worst ever. Have had better steaks at Golden Corral. We had already waited an extraordinary amount of time for our service, our meal, our drinks... we declined him getting a new one, and left half of the meat and grizzle on his plate. Breakfast buffet was fine, but they did not keep coffee/tea cups readily available, nor glasses for juice. VERY short-staffed as in most places these days. (not those that were working's fault, but they seemed very inexperienced.) We had WONDERFUL meals throughout ALL of Scotland on our honeymoon EXCEPT here. Would not recommend at all.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
