I visited earlier this year for dinner alone after leaving
I visited earlier this year for dinner alone after leaving a traumatic situation. I have been in social isolation since 2020, so my social queues are likely delayed. I wanted to take personal photos with no flash for memories, not an influencer or on social media. I realized during my first dish I had not bowed back to the staff, was too busy trying to feel in place outside in public. The second dish I ordered I thought I would be able to deconstruct myself, but it was disassembled by staff quickly after being served. I ate as quickly as I could and went home. I hope I did not display disrespect to any members of the establishment, and that I was just not aware of the dining custom.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for dinner and the ambiance was nice.
The dimmed light was a vibe. However, the food here was mediocre. My favorite dishes here were the beef tartare and the egg on egg on egg. Having that said, the main course items we ordered did not live up to the expectation. The bread for the wagyu sandwich was a bit dry. The duck breast was a bit too salty and there was nothing to cleanse the plate after each bite. The oysters were alright, they were just on the smaller end. For the price, I don't think it was worth it.

Really great spot in the lower east side with incredible service and amazing and unique food. From tableside uni pasta to those amazing Wagyu sandwiches, this place was full of surprises. Not crowded and super chill. They also had a good assortment of beverages Highly recommended

I can not say I was entirely impressed by this place and it's food. Although the dishes were succulent and indulgent as a party of five we all left pretty much unfulfilled and felt like a glob of oil and grease afterwards. Ambience and service was great, the waiters and waitresses were helpful and made the experience fun. Our waiter explained every dish and even gave us time to record the mixing of the uni pasta. I do warn, those who have a sensitive nose might not find the smell here pleasant. There is this herbal smoke essence and flows through the restaurant and it might be pleasant to others but personally I found it nauseating. Food: Karrage: crispy and large pieces of juicy dark chicken meat. The sauce was the highlight , the chicken itself was not entirely crispy and only had parts that were. But we did appreciate the batter to meat ratio, about 9:1 Crispy octopus: delicious delicious delicious. The octopus was not fried but it still somehow had a delicate crispy texture but also remaining soft and tender on the inside. I highly recommend getting this as an appetizer! Dry aged duck with crispy mushrooms: This was what most of my party looked forward to as we all enjoy duck. While others found it delicious and tasty I personally found the meat itself to be a bit gamey and couldn't eat past one bite. This is a warning to others who tend to not have a tongue towards the gamey meats. My party on the other hand loved the dish, but wished the duck pieces were cut a bit smaller. Fried mushroom was amazing , I mean let's be honest, fried anything is amazing ! Flank Steak: This dish was my personal favorite. Tender steak topped with a delicious garlic scallion sauce and the fingerling potatoes. It was salty and indulgent and delicious! Uni Pasta: As a person who never had uni or even tried this was a big big challenge. The uni itself was pungent and strong , paired with the bone marrow made this dish very very over powering. We each only had one serving before calling it quits. As per my friends words, the uni quality itself would be considered medium , not terrible aka not garbage tasting but also not sweet like the high quality uni's they've had. Wagyu Katsu Sando: The dish that everyone comes for ! This was a collective agreement from all five of us that night, either pick the uni pasta or this. Because having both was way over the top! Both dishes were oily and packed a punch, if you had to come please pick either or and not both ! But the meat itself was fatty and juicy, not too overly sweet or salty and the bread was crispy and toasted. Overall I would say this is a place most people can try once and be happy with it. I do recommend coming with a larger group to try all their dishes
Be the first to ReplyLove love loved this japanese restaurant! They seated me
Love love loved this japanese restaurant! They seated me right away even though I told them my party was going to be 20 mins late. The service was great throughout the whole meal. The food was even more amazing. My friends and I savored each bite we took because it was so delicious. There was not one thing that was bad. The steak tartare came with this sauce on top that you mix and it was very fresh. The egg on egg on egg was flavorful and the crispy octopus was tender. We also got the duck which came cooked perfectly medium. The star of the show was the uni mazemen and they scrape the bone marrow on top in front of you and mix. It's also the last dish because it's the heaviest. Overall, it was one of the best dining experiences I've had and hope to be back soon!

My friends graciously took me here for a birthday celebration mainly because I wanted to try the wagyu sando. I loveee wagyu so I can be a bit bias here but I think it was great, but pricy. The uni was fresh and sweet, karage was crunchy and perfectly seasoned. The oysters were just alright and sashimi was decent. I would come back for the uni, the ambience was nice and chill.

4.5/5! I really enjoyed my experience at SakaMai. We came at 6:30 right before their happy hour ended at 7 and so glad we did! The oysters were half off ($2/oyster), and they were so good!! I definitely could've eaten dozens of those. Sadly their happy hour is only available by the bar, not at a regular table. For the food we had the toro hand roll, wagyu hand roll, grilled broccolini, and uni mazemen. Everything was good. As someone who loves uni, I loved the uni mazemen. Hand rolls were good as well. Give it a try!

THIS HAS QUICKLY BECOME MY FAVE NYC RESTAURANTS! Everything we ordered was so good. This is also one of the few restaurants that can pull off great food AND great drinks. Let's start with the drinks- their age smoked #2 with rye whiskey, scotch whisky, Japanese sake with cacao and sweet vermouth is out of this world. It's my fave smoked whiskey, the flavors are so intricate with a hint of sweetness and goes down so smoothly. They also smoke it in front of you, so if you love a good show, you will love this. My FAVE FAVE dish is the egg on egg on egg it's literal mouthgasm. I was so shook. My second fave dish is the toro sashimi, super fatty and melts in your mouth. They are also known for the uni mazemen, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and the uni / bone marrow taste was spot on. The grilled broccolini with the runny egg was also super good! Ambiance: cute date spot Service: great service Genuinely impressed by this spot, and would give this place a 10/10!

Came here with a group of 5 on a Friday (we made a same-day reservation). While the restaurant space is small, it seems that the restaurant was not super busy last Friday so we probably could have made do without a reservation. They also had a happy hour deal but we found out it only applies if you sit at the bar. Here are the dishes we ordered: Sashimi platter - 5.5/10 - fish quality was fine but nothing special, probably wouldn't order again Cha soba - 8.5/10 - so light and refreshing, paired really well with the other richer dishes Duck - 10/10 - AMAZING tender and rich flavor, one of my friends called it the "best duck I've ever had in my life" - please please order here! Miso cod - 10/10 - also amazing, also buttery and rich flavor and the rice was on the firmer side but added a great texture Karaage - 7/10 - sauce was really good, otherwise standard karaage (still good though) Crispy octopus - 7/10 - was indeed crispy but otherwise okay, I feel like it could've been more tender Overall, our favorites were definitely the duck, the miso cod, and the cha soba. The service was also great, really informative and helpful when we were ordering. I'm definitely curious about the other dishes on the menu now, would come back to try these now that I know finding a table here is very do-able.

TRY IT *Endive Salad-Finely shaved cheese on top of crisp bitter endives. *Black Cod- Served with a side of black wild rice. *Crispy Octopus-Small portion but perfectly cooked and a side of aioli. *Soba Salad-My favorite dish of the evening. *Sashimi- Every single piece was very fresh. *Yogurt Mousse- The berry fruit compote in this dessert makes it special. SKIP IT *Wagyu Katsu Sandwich-Very decadent but slightly too greasy for me. FYI *Full bar (sake and mocktails available) *Metered street parking starts 7pm. *Great for date night and large parties. Service was friendly and spot on. I appreciate it when servers take their time to explain each dish and the staff took extra care in making sure my pregnant friend was comfortable. Can't wait to come back to try out the rest of their menu!

Wow, the wagyu katsu sando blew me away! From the moment I stepped in, I knew I was in for a treat. The server brought us to a nook in the back where it was dimly lit (but still had a very inviting ambience). From there, we ordered three dishes and a glass of sake. Uni Mazemen (9/10): If you're also ordering the katsu sando, request to have this served afterwards so that it doesn't overwhelm your palette. Loved the combination of the buttery uni with the bone marrow (according to the servers, they recently re-introduced the bone marrow to this dish). Seeing the server scrape off the bone marrow (which was quite a generous portion, might I add) and mix it into the noodle dish was quite fun. My only wish is for it to be slightly more flavorful, whether that be with umami or another seafood. The richness was lovely at first but soon become too overpowering. $48.Wagyu Katsu Sando (10/10): Delicious. The slight tang from the katsu sauce paired perfectly with the soft and tender (not filet mignon, so it didn't melt in my mouth but rather had a nice chewable texture to it) beef. Could be slightly rarer in my opinion. Great treat yourself dish ($95).Egg on egg on egg (8/10): Hard to go wrong with steamed egg, uni, and caviar. The richness of the uni and saltiness of the caviar complemented the soft steamed egg. Great experience but probably wouldn't get it again, especially at this price point. ($28)Service was attentive and quick. Lovely dinner experience.

We when on a Thursday night family dinner about 9 of us order about 20 items of food still not full. Food was good just potions are really small. Tap came 948 tip was included which is fine, when I paid the server never ask if I need change back. I had to ask for my change!!! Very disappointed on the service.

Be the first to ReplyIn all fairness, I think I hyped myself up too much on this
In all fairness, I think I hyped myself up too much on this before going into it. I have been wanting to check this restaurant out because of all my favorite dishes were here and never get to stop by when in the city. I think the service was too attentive and didn't get to just enjoy my meal as someone asked us how we were doing every 5 minutes. The food was not what I was expecting but still good. I probably won't come again. I experiment with wagyu and my favorite dishes are usual uni, wagyu, pasta.... None of them really were super special. Other than the katsu wagyu ... I've had better dishes of what the served, elsewhere. I watched the server just smash the uni pieces into the pasta. I love mixed uni in my pasta but just mashing grade A uni into pasta is such a waste and was a pain to watch. You can mix lower grade uni to get the same effect before it comes out! And just top it with the grade A uni. It was definitely different than most uni pastas. Gave a higher rating for creativity, but nothing was hitting that great as far as taste.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a true gem.
My friend brought me here once and cocktails, food and service were amazing! You HAVE TO try their spicy cucumber (so fresh!), grilled broccolini and wagyu 5 stars!
Be the first to Replywagyu steak was not as good as i hoped.
uni mazeman was the definitely the high light though. if you're a big steak fan this place prob isn't worth but more worth if ur a noodle enjoyer
Be the first to ReplyThis is my 3rd time at SakaMai and honestly I always forget
This is my 3rd time at SakaMai and honestly I always forget how good it is until I end up coming back. I had to change my reservation yesterday and they were super accommodating. The staff is very friendly and fun. Food is made to share, wish some dishes had larger portions but that's ok. My faves: the broccolini, the oysters, the beef tartare and the uni mazeman. Is the Wagyu Sando worth the price and wait? Definitely try it out one time but the other dishes stand out themselves too.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was amazing! Everything was made to perfection
This place was amazing! Everything was made to perfection and my all time favorite was the uni pasta! They had a huge bone marrow with it that they would mix into the pasta - the uni was so sweet and overall the flavor was amazing. It's definitely a little on the pricier side, but I would come back for sure. The steak and potatos were very yummy too, the steak was tender and the sauce was flavourful. Overall I had a good experience and I highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplySashimi was so fresh, firm, bouncy texture.
Wagu sando was bit heavy but literally melt in your mouth. Worth the price and will definitely visit again.
Be the first to Reply5/5 one of the best tiny underrated wagyu spots ever.
5/5 for service: waiter was letting us know how dishes will be served in order for the maximum experience and i appreciated his recommendation. order was quite fast5/5 for food: the egg on egg on egg surprised me the most as i expected it to be flavorless and just taste the uni, but omg the texture and the flavors flowed so well together. it was very umami tasting and u can taste the japanese flavors in it. the beef tartare and wagyu handroll was very good, as it was well balanced.the katsu sando was so crispy and tender. there was a lot of sauce that paired well with the wagyu taste, and it was done perfectly.uni mazemen was very good and creamy. wasn't a big fan because it was more seafood tasting but great for seafood lovers
Be the first to ReplyVery nice ambience for dinner and the food was delicious.
Best dish was the crispy octopus hands down. It was so soft and crispy at the same time. The ambiance was very nice and the service was super nice. Food took a while that's why I'm giving it 4 stars.
Be the first to ReplySakamai had potential, but there were a few things that
Sakamai had potential, but there were a few things that soured the experience. Needed a spot before a show at Caveat, and was able to make a same-day res for 5:30 on a Sunday, which was great. The meal itself, however, was a mixed bag. First, I was hoping to get the Once upon a time in the East cocktail, but they were out of every single cocktail except the Boston tea party. The server explained that they had had a busy weekend and ran out of the ingredients for all of their drinks except for that vodka cocktail. For a place that's partially categorized as a cocktail bar, I was a little bemused by this. I did end up getting the Boston drink (I had been looking forward to cocktails, and was willing to take what I could get!), and it was very tasty. As for the food, it was mostly great. Egg on egg on egg was delicious, and the mushroom that came with the dry aged duck breast was incredible. Grilled broccolini was also amazing. But while the broth in the sake steamed mussels was perfect, the mussels themselves were very gritty/sandy. Yikes. Let's go with 4 stars, because the food was really quite good. Prob won't be back, though, considering the other hitches (and the vast selection of stellar Japanese spots in this area).

I tried their A5 wagyu sandwich and honestly it's one of the worst wagyu experience I've ever had, definitely not worth the $85. The sauce they used on the sandwich over takes the flavor of wagyu to a point where I don't taste the wagyu flavor at all. I've even tried separating the meat from the bread but the result was the same. I would've given it a 1 start if I only order the wagyu sandwich however, other items I ordered was quit decent thus the 3 stars.
Be the first to Replycame here with my wife tonight.
We sat in the back in a very small room but nice environment. We ordered couple drinks while waiting for the food. Tuna handroll, sake steamed mussels, egg on egg for appetizer and duck breast , mazemen for entree. We like the duck breast the most and I personally admire how the chef takes a lot of patience to achieve the texture of the duck skin and texture of the meat. Of course the side dish mushrooms are wonderful, too. Everything went great until we tasted the mazemen. Since my wife doesn't like any dairy products, but the ramen taste like a whole plate of cheese. I asked the waitress how come there says nothing about cheese on the menu. She didn't have any clue. I thought she is new or something? So we didn't care and ordered fried chicken because my wife still didn't have entree. while we were still having the fried chicken, the waitress came and just took the 2/3 ramen away. I was pissed but I didn't want to be rude, so I didn't say anything. I hope the chef or the owner can take it seriously because you have a new waitress with no manager, and you have a whole kitchen crew that nobody gives a damn about the reason why customers have a lot of leftovers but don't even wanna get it wrapped.
