Spain Meets California
I had this restaurant on my must visit list and yay it did not disappoint! Our server, Andrea, was so knowledgeable and her recommendations were spot on for me in the way of my cocktail the Watermelon Report which consisted of Vodka, Watermelon, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Lime, Cilantro Chipotle & Cumin tincture. So refreshing and I report it was special & delicious. Her rec for my app the HIRAMASA CRUDO(buttermilk, leche de tigre, basil, cucumber caviar, pickled blueberries) was so good- I wanted more! We had the COCA IDIAZÁBAL(olive oil cracker, membrillo, Idiazábal cheese) it had a bit too much cheese. It was fun to see the jamon iberico station and the ambience was elegant and sophisticated. Drink and wine selection was great. Even saw wines from the Canary Islands we just visited last month. So fun to feel the Spain vibe in Los Angeles! We visited for breakfast as well. We enjoyed their coffee and olive oil mini pancakes. Great service then too. San Laurel did not disappoint.

A surprisingly good dinner spot next to Walt Disney Hall! The service was excellent and our waiter was knowledgeable about the food and the wine list. He gave us good recommendations on Spanish wines and cocktails. The food was lovely and I highly recommend it to anyone, who wants a good meal in an elegant but yet casual atmosphere.

We had dinner at San Laurel while staying at the Conrad for the weekend. The menu is varied and creative, as one might expect from Jose Andres and the food was tasty and beautifully presented. When ordering we took a few suggestions from our waiter and they were spot on. Service was top notch. The restaurant was busy and seems popular. San Laurel is pricey and would be an especially nice destination for a special occasion.

My wife and I were celebrating our 21 year anniversary. We were running late for our 7:00 reservation, so we called and they gladly switched us to 7:15. When we arrived we were seated directly in front of the kitchen and we could see everything. we ordered the Ojo Blanco, for me and the Black Mission Figs for my wife. She really didn't like the figs so we traded. I thoroughly enjoyed the figs, some bites were better than others depending on which greens were in the spoon. The Ojo Soup maybe the best soup I ever had, if not definitely the best cold soup I ever had. Next we had the duck and the Wild Mushrooms both were tasty we had no complaints. Then I added the mac & cheese because I was still a little hungry. It came pretty quick and boy it was fantastic. My wife said it was the best she ever had. For dessert we had the pistachio cake and the Tarta de Queso. What a wonderful treat that was, the pistachio cake was good too. Service was superlative and the iced tea was very good, and strong. Valet parking was $15.00 w/ validation.

We ate dinner at San Laurel before attending a concert at Disney Hall. We found the setting to be amazing with an incredible view. There was a nice buzz in the restaurant and people seemed to enjoy themselves. Service was top notch from beginning to end. Yes, it is pricey, but the quality of cocktails, along with the careful and obviously labor intensive preparation made for a memorable night. We started with the COCA IDIAZÁBAL along with the fennel soup. They were a sight for the eyes and pleasing to the pallate. The duck breast was terrific, but a bit skimpy in the portion size. A couple of vegetable sides filled out the evening. For dessert we enjoyed the dehydrated chocolate mousse and tarta de queso. The chocolate dessert was a hit, thebtarta a miss, the texture and flavor seemed off. We definately will return, fornthe view and inventiveness of the food

We were there for breakfast. The food was very nice albeit pricey. The eggs fried in a Spanish style were lovely but without a side order of toast would have been very unbalanced. Several people at our table had the side of potato’s $8 which they enjoyed but all felt it was a bit too small as served on their plate - not for sharing. Service was excellent but slow. The room itself is not nice. It’s a bit Dennys Like. Noisy, and very hotelish - I can’t imagine anyone from outside the ho tel would come here and for dinner it would be a bit cafeish. With our Diamond discount there was really only sides to build breakfast. Hilton has become so bad at treating Diamond level with a $25 credit regardless of the menu, hotel or country. It’s ridiculous.

We made a dinner reservation at San Laurel. We had Sea Urchin and the Rack of Lamb. Sea Urchin was very disappointing. Sea urchin and the caviar did not taste very fresh. It was one of the worst uni I had in a long time. Rack of Lamb was delicious. It was well cooked and seasoned. The meat was tender and the vegetables on the side were delicious. For the desert, we had the pistachio cake which was pretty good. Next morning, we also had breakfast at San Laurel. For breakfast, we ordered Greek Yogurt Parfaits, Olive Oil Mini Pancakes, Avocado Eggs Benedict, and the Fruit of the Day. Even though we ordered the Avocado Eggs Benedict, we got Tortilla El Camino instead. Maybe I miss-pointed when I ordered the menu? We decided to just give it a try. Greek yogurt was very standard. Olive oil mini pancake was very small compared to its cost, and its taste was pretty disappointing. Tortilla El Camino was actually pretty good. Except for again, the caviar tasted kinda weird. Our favorite item was the fruit. We were surprised when we received a pretty big portion. Overall, we enjoyed breakfast more than dinner. But here comes the issue I had with the restaurant. On my way home, my body started to itch. When I checked my body, I had pretty severe rashes all over my body. Bear in mind I don’t have any kind of food allergy. Even when I eat uni or other sea foods, I never got this sort of rash on my body before. For the past 18 hrs, I only ate food from the hotel and stayed in their room. I did not eat any other food after checking out of the hotel. I could not find any other correlation to the rash other than the restaurant and the hotel. So I decided to give them a call. At first, Conrad Los Angeles also sounded very concerned. They said that they will close down the room that I stayed in and also check the ingredients of the foods that I ate during my stay. They also told me that there is a third party company that comes in and checks all parts of the room. They told me that they will contact me again with their findings. Next day, I receive a call from them again telling me that they did not find anything wrong with their ingredients so there is nothing they can do for me. “What about the sea urchin and the caviar?” “No, we don't think those were the issue.” “What about the room? Did the third party company come in and investigate the room?” “No, since our hotel is brand new, we don’t think that’s the issue. We did not call them.” It looks fine on their end so they are not going to do anything. My condition and experience did not matter to them because according to their investigation, everything is “fine.” I guess in the end, they do not care about their customer once they check out. This basically soured the whole experience. I am still suffering from the rash. When I went to my doctor for a checkup, he told me that’s why you buy higher quality seafood.

Lovely range of food and options, good al fresco morning dining but was glad breakfast was included.
Be the first to ReplyNo Way, Jose!
I have nothing but the greatest respect for Jose Andres. He is a great humanitarian and also a wonderful chef, in the right setting. We've had excellent meals at a couple of his other restaurants, but San Laurel was a MAJOR disappointment. The room is beautiful; the view is great. The service was, however, on the snippy side. We felt, throughout the meal -- even though the place was half-empty -- that we were being hustled along and shoved out. That aside, the food, while okay, was over-priced for what it was. Let's start with the coca idiazabal. Here we're talking about your basic cheese and membrillo. It was gorgeous. Looked like a beautiful snowball with edible flowers on top. But the fact that the cheese was grated to a hair's-breath dampened its flavor and the thin scrape of membrillo was hardly there at all. The little roasted beet salad was nice enough, but not for $26. The crudo was the best plate, but here we're talking about a few slices of fish and some acid. And that was the story overall, okay dishes, but about twice the price for what they were worth. Wild mushrooms? Don't bother. You could rustle up a pan of crimini or even button 'shrooms and get more flavor. The vermicelli "mac and cheese" -- heavily touted by our server -- was very rich, but also totally bland. And we've had far better gambas in lower-end tapas places. The five shrimp here lacked any character. That was the story overall with all the dishes. Even the dessert, a pistachio horror, was spongy and plain. If you want to go to a place to be seen, this may be it the location for you. If you're hoping for a fine meal -- eh, not so much. What a huge let-down . . . . One would hope that this place can up the ante, otherwise it will be just another hotel restaurant that hobbles along on a famous name and a nifty location.
Be the first to ReplyJose Andres at his best
I am a huge fan of Jose Andrés, I was addicted to going to The Bazaar at the SLS hotel and went as often as I could until it closed. Heart broken I wandered the earth coming to the realization that that was the only Jose Andrés restaurant in los Angeles. I have been to Bazaar Meat and the chef tasting at é by José Andrés. So when I heard of the three new openings at the Conrad Hotel I was hunting for reservations as soon as possible, hopefully timing it with my upcoming anniversary. But alas they were booked on the day of, but had an opening exactly one week later so we snapped it up and started looking at the menu to decide what we wanted to get once we got there. We showed up right on time unfortunately the staff wasn't ready yet but we were lovingly escorted to the nearby bar for drinks and appetizer on the house. Before we even got out drinks our table was ready but we were assured to take our time and enjoy our little slice of outdoor heaven with amazing views. Our drinks were beautiful our appetizer amazing and our waiter was sweet and took good care of us. Now, we finally moved to the restaurant and again greeted professionaly with our choice of table. The waiter was perfection, describing each item eloquently, painting a mouth watering picture of everything he described. We ordered a couple drinks off the menu and half the food menu assuring the waiter we just wanted to try everything and wouldn't actually be consuming it all, although we tried. The waitstaff was great the food was great the drinks, the busses, the bartender, all perfect, considering they have only been open about a month. In summary everything was perfect we even ended up wandering to one of there other locations Aqua Viva which also was alot of fun but that's for a separate review. I want to thank everyone there that made our Anniversary one of the best we have ever had you know who you are!
