San Ysidro Ranch Montecito Reviews from The Last Year
San Ysidro Ranch is a really strange and confusing case of
San Ysidro Ranch is a really strange and confusing case of a luxury property that sometimes operates like a budget motel or fast food restaurant. My partner and I were interested in their newly announced afternoon tea. Note that SYR is on OpenTable, but at least for afternoon tea, you cannot book it there. You cannot find a single date, even months into the future, that allows booking. Instead, they instruct you to call to make reservations on the website. I did this and secured a spot for Saturday afternoon. As soon as I hung up, I got a text message from OpenTable to secure my reservation by entering a credit card. This is $65 tea people, and SYR is taking a card to secure it in case of no-shows? I dug into this deeper and realized that on OpenTable, SYR has NO reviews. The reason is they figured out a way to take your CC number and manage your reservation but in a way where you are never considered a diner. OpenTable only allows you to leave a review if you've successfully dined at a restaurant. We arrived five minutes early and had no problem with the front gate check-in and valet. They were super fast. We didn't know where to go, but a manager quickly helped check us in. We were led to a lounge where others were waiting and more people arrived. We waited 35 minutes before someone grabbed us to get seated, while we watched others who arrived after us and likely had later reservations get seated first. We were led to a nice outdoor patio area with 2-3 empty tables. There did not seem to be any sort of rush or issue turning over tables, that would justify a wait of 35 minutes past our reservation time. When I asked the hostess what happened she just mumbled a response. No sincere apology or explanation. The courtyard, while nice, had a really weird seating arrangement. All the tables face each other, so as long as you look up and out, you are staring at other parties. Super weird. We had a great waiter who was attentive but not very polished in taking orders. He kept asking if we wanted to start with appetizers and was mumbling some dishes, but it's not very clear what the options were. The menu shows a few options, but we weren't sure if he meant these two items (oysters, caviar) or something else. What made it more confusing is we heard a table across from us order "Korean Tacos". Yes, Korean tacos. I had to google Plow and Angel, and Stonehouse's menu to find it offered as a main on the SH dinner menu. I don't know if we were supposed to memorize the restaurant menus or look them up on our phones. Order was taken quickly and the savory sandwiches came quickly. They serve loose-leaf tea, which is a plus, but there was a good amount of delay before they brought my filter. If you are serious about tea you know that temperature and time are the most important factors. So my green tea was extremely oversteeped and bitter for the first pot, because of how long it took before I could pour it. Later steeps were better. Overall the food (both sandwiches and sweets) was tasty but also really strange. All the pastries were really small, which is fine, but it feels like the chefs are refusing to use baking powder. The cookies were flat and reminded me of dollar pancakes. The scones were about 3/4 of an inch tall and not the type of luxurious pull-apart sweet and savory scones you can lather butter or cream on like one might expect. Speaking of lather, they don't serve clotted cream with their scones but instead replace it with mascarpone cheese. The waiter played it off like this was some positive change and kept saying it was "just like" clotted cream. No, it's not. I expect clotted cream and jam with afternoon tea scones. Overall, the food tasted fine, and the service once seated was pretty good but there were so many small weird issues from the time we arrived until we left. Overall, we were not that upset and thought it was ok, but there were so many small issues that it really ruined the special first Mother's Day for my partner. I feel like everything could have been easily fixable, but it doesn't seem like SYR cares or has the right training for their employees. There really aren't many good afternoon tea options in Santa Barbara, and I thought SYR would be a place to buck that trend and somewhere I could take family and out-of-town guests. Hopefully, they can improve.

I went to the SYR for a 90-minute-deep tissue massage with some friends and unfortunately had one of the worst massages I have ever had. I rarely complain and the staff was so lovely (Kim the receptionist was wonderful) that I wasn't going to say anything but after hearing how amazing my friend's experiences were, I felt I needed to let management know. I spoke to Andrew the Spa Manager, and he convinced me to come back and give them a second chance. I am SO glad I did. My 2nd experience was one of the best massages I've every had. For context, I've been an athlete my whole life and have had well over a 100 deep tissue/sports massages. Toyo was my masseuse and I could not recommend her more. Her attention to detail and customer service was incredible. I really appreciated the Spa team for listening to my feedback and inviting me back! They could have easily disregarded my feedback but now I will definitely be a returning guest!
Lovely resort property in gorgeous Montecito.
Very professional, friendly attentive staff. We had massages, lunch& loved it so much went back the same evening for epic wine pairing dinner in the wine cellar of the Stone House. Pricey, but very special ambience.

The grounds are stunning !! The food was delicious and the staff were so kind and friendly. It was a refreshing and relaxing experience. My mother and I had a lovely time . Definitely worth the trip.
My girlfriend and I revisited the ranch for lunch.
It was outstanding. The restaurant is just so beautiful with a wonderful view. Food was very good. We had the lobster dumplings which were excellent and the Korean tacos which were really tasty. Our main course was a killer burger, and I had gazpacho. Both were excellent. Sounds crazy to mention this, but the olive oil was exceptional. Our waiter was wonderful and service with paced very nicely-no rushing. I would recommend if you are looking for a lovely way to have an afternoon lunch.

I'm a lucky one because I live less than a mile from San Ysidro Ranch.... it's an amazing to visit for dinner, massage, and.... hair. The hair stylist, Shannon Phillips - right there at SYR - is excellent. If you've never had your hair done JUST THE WAY YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED IT, Shannon is the hair stylist to see. Her excellence, including skill, experience, talent, AND her sweetness and genuine care about her clients is unrivaled. I love her.... she is not to be missed whether you're a guest at SYR or a local.

We went for dinner and it was one of the best dinner experiences of my life! Absolutely beautiful location, delicious food presented in an elegant way, exceptional service....just perfection! I will definitely make this a part of any future trips to Santa Barbara!
This review is LONG overdue, but was important for me to
This review is LONG overdue, but was important for me to write! I enjoyed lunch on the garden patio with friends on December 27. There were six of us and we all had the prix fixe menu with an aperol spritz. The prix fixe menu is about $35 per person which is a reasonable price for a nice lunch and the setting is beautiful. The service was also very good. On January 5 I returned to have dinner with three friends in celebration of the New Year. We were seated indoors in the small stone room to the left as you go up the steps of the property. In trying to decide what I would have for dinner I asked our server about his recommendation between two of the fish dishes that were on the menu. He proceeded to explain each dish and then told me that the sole was the chef's special. This was not one of the dishes that I had inquired about. One of my friends commented that the sole was for two people and our server said that they could prepare it for just one. At $190 for two, I made the mistake of assuming that the dish would be approximately $100. Definitely, overpriced for sole, but I chose it, since I was told that it is the chef's special. When our server brought my sole to the table, it came out on a cart which he positioned behind my chair where I could not see it. He then proceeded to filet the whole fish and plate it. I turned around to see what he was doing and commented on the fact that it was a lot of fish. If the fileting of the fish is so special that it's done in presentation style at the table, why didn't he position the cart at the end of our table where I would watch the process? (This is what the manager did when he served us our dessert.) He told me that he would plate up the other filet (there were two coming from each half of the fish) for the table to share. I noticed that he only brought out one serving of the side dishes which were asparagus and small potatoes. At that moment I had this feeling that I would be paying for sole for two, as was stated on the menu, and not for one as our server alleged. The fish was good, but nothing over the top great. Sole is a tender, white fish that is hard to mess up when it's prepared, and it was not worth $190! When our bill came I looked at it to see how much I'd been charged for the sole, and as I suspected, the bill reflected the full amount of $190. At that moment I should have questioned our server and asked to speak to the manager, but I chose not to do that feeling somewhat intimidated. I paid my share of the bill regretting having ordered the sole. So for the sole, one glass of wine, a shared dessert, and the tip I paid $250 for my meal. I feel that it is important to note that I am a foody. I have enjoyed good food and wine my whole adult life and am willing to pay for top-notch dishes. I grew up in the Napa Valley, and lived most of my adult life in the Bay Area where quality restaurants far exceed anything available in the Santa Barbara area. $190 for the sole at San Ysidro is a joke! I take full responsibility for not speaking up at that moment to our server and the manager, but please note that I will not return. I have also shared this story with my friends and will continue to do so. San Ysidro is a lovely property, but you need to be more realistic with your menu prices in relation to the level of your menu options. Your staff should also be trained to be honest and provide clarity when making recommendations such as what our server made to me. I can't remember his name, but I think it might be Brandon or Brendon or something similar.

The San Ysidro Ranch not only offers gorgeous rooms, a stunning property, a sultry speakeasy, but they now offer a Champagne Brunch! The ambiance both inside and out is absolutely breathtaking! This spot definitely is one worth going to for that special occasion, a needed getaway or just to impress the one you love!!
I ordered high tea for 7 women.
All the treats were placed down at once. Only enough food /treats for about 3 to 4 people. Not sure if it was worth about $600. They only had tea and water. The servers didn't even pour the tea. Nice atmosphere but ...

We came to San Ysidro Ranch for their afternoon tea after seeing an advertisement in the paper! The view was amazing, the grounds were super maintained and beautiful. My highlight of the afternoon tea was the service, the employees were very attentive, kind and informative. This was my first afternoon tea but the food was really great and filling, the tea selection was plenty and the tea was good very smooth. I would come back here in the future.
Know what you are paying for
I don’t mind paying a fortune for a room in a hotel if it meets my standards, but there’s nothing that bothers me more than spending a fortune and expecting a fortune ‘s worth of amenities, service, food, and beauty and receiving service one would expect in a one star hotel. I booked to stay at San Ysidro Ranch where I held a large event 10 years ago. Everything about that event was perfect from the person that organized it in the hotel, to the hotel rooms, the private dinner, the guestrooms for all of my friends and family, and the general ambience, everything and everyone was great. I decided to return because I needed a break from a very sad situation with a friends illness and so I thought I would pamper myself and stay for two days in a beautiful suite and experience true service and luxury once again It was an extremely disappointing experience from the start. The staff seemed young and untrained at the front desk and on arrival they should have been in front of the desk to greet me but instead they were behind the desk talking. A nice young man did come outside to say hello and help me in, but that didn’t make up for the lack of greeting at the check-in desk. It seem to me that the front desk person spent more time having me sign release forms for the hotel, rather than asking me how my day had gone or if there was anything she could do for me. Upon arrival at my room, the nice young man who had driven us there, did not orient us to the room, or ask us if we wanted to be oriented. The first thing I noticed was how dark the lighting was in the bathroom and in the bedroom. I am a reader, so this was very disappointing because one of my favorite places to read is in the bathtub. I had to call maintenance because in order to watch movies on the TV they need to attach an apple TV device to it. I have no idea why they just don’t bite the bullet and attach the devices which cost nothing to everyone’s television so that Guests doesn’t have to sit there on the couch, while a maintenance person attempts to make your television connect to Apple TV. Frankly, it was ridiculous. I went to put on some slippers and found that they only had in the closet two pairs of huge cheap slippers that were the same kind that chain hotels carry. I realize that no one can be like the Mark Hotel and remember what your size is every time you stay and provide you with a pair of slippers that you could wear to lunch.! The worst problem about this hotel is they have a set up where they do not charge you for the food as it is included in the price of your room. If you have room service, they add on a service charge of 20%. The waiter does not tell you this. You have to find it out for yourself by reading the bill. if you eat in the dining room, the same thing will happen. They will present you with the bill which will show you how much the meal cost and then they expect you to leave a tip based on the cost of the meal even though you’re not paying for the meal. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure this one out. In fact, it was one of the most ridiculous systems I’ve ever experienced in any hotel anywhere. They should not expect guests to leave a tip after charging them so much money for the room, everything should be included except for alcohol. Expecting a guest to leave a tip on the basis of a dinner that was included in the price of the room is insanity. I get the feeling that this is another sad situation where the hotel can’t afford to stay alive and so what it’s doing is charging people like me insane amounts of money for rooms and then providing them with mediocre service because most of their employees have left. Their solution is to add on gratuities for the guest to pay because they can’t afford to pay their employees enough to keep them happy in their job. I just feel disappointed because I was hoping that everything here would be perfect but it goes to show that if you’re naïve enough to pay this much money for a room you may not get what you hoped for.
Exceptional in every way.
Incredibly expensive and worth every penny. The most comfy, quaint rooms on the most beautiful grounds. A must.
Magical and Enchanting Place
A fabulous stay at The Ranch. Ty Warmer has spent the money - and has the eye for detail - and the insistence on unstinting ongoing perfection, to make every foot of the Ranch from the bottom of the driveway to the top of the property absolutely flawlessly lovely, inviting, elegant, welcoming, stunningly, relaxingly lovely. Kudos to the landscape architect - and the team of various gardeners who keep it this way. The Ranch is sublime. Yes, Ty, in my personal opinion, ought to pay his front of house staff considerably more to avoid the constant turnover and encourage long term loyalty; and nightly cottage rates are not for the faint of heart. That said, service was attentive and helpful and could not have been nicer. Pepper Cottage has been updated (perhaps the others have as well) with the most elegant cream and blue wall upholstery; and a few more pieces of furniture, including a mini bookcase unit with drawers below, a little vanity dresser near the bed, all of which all function well, with higher, sturdier chairs by the window seat, and a new rectangular table. It's just gorgeous. I was blown away. The Cottage also lacked the sort of funny chemicall-y smell it used to have upon check in in various prior years, so they clearly have changed their products, which was a nice plus. The bed - hmmm. The mattress was not overwhelming; and did not feel lie the super high end one I think guests should be able to expect at that price point, like a Vi-Spring, or Hastens/Duxiana. I tossed and turned quite a bit. Sleeping Pillows used to be huge and softly squashy, delightful to sleep on. These were the typical king size but smaller than the old ones The Ranch used to have on their beds, maybe not foam rubber but felt a bit like it, and left me with a bit of a neck ache. Everything in the bedroom and bathroom was spotlessly clean. The air conditioning was very efficient, and cooled the room perfectly to 68 degrees. Unfortunately, it sounds as though the vent or return is right behind the bed headboard and was quite loud at night. They should have used some sound mitigation during construction. The housekeeper turned the fireplace and the thermostat heat up to 74 degrees during evening turn down. Next time I will request that not be done, as I like a cold room to sleep in. There are adorable chocolates as welcome gifts, Herban essential Towelettes by the bedsides (the orange scented is my favorite), the heart shaped soap by the bathroom sinks has a luxurious lather, towel are snow white, soft and very absorbent. Lunch, dinner and breakfast at Stonehouse were each excellent, delicious and used high quality ingredients and pretty presentation. Service was impeccable at each meal, from busboys to wait staff. We were so pleased. And of course, the views, whether it is during the day or at night with the enchanting lighting, couldn't be more romantic or more lovely. The Christmas lights and decorations, and soft yellow glow of the pathway lights, were just beautiful everywhere. So pleased that they go to this extra mile in doing everything, and do not skimp. Holidays here are truly special and memorable. I an't say it enough. The flaws are minimal and the magic is incredible. We are so looking forward to returning again - and again; and highly recommend.
Santa Barbara unfortunately out of reach for most
Beautiful property. Excellent services. Prohibitively expensive however. A shame. The Santa Barbara area is truly gorgeous, but lodging has become so terribly expensive that it is difficult to justify visiting the area when there are so many other beautiful parts of California to visit. The expensive to stay at even a modest hotel or air bnb is just too much.
Loud, family focused resort, not a luxury destination
San Ysidro ranch is resting on the luxury history that they advertise on their website and in articles on the wall near the check in desk. I am sure when the Kennedy's honeymooned here, they were not surrounded by small children at the restaurant with each meal, or screaming kids on the lovely lawn, or splashing kids in the pool. Management was aware of the situation, and simply said it was a family resort and they would not address it or do anything to change the experience. If you are looking for a tranquil, private and luxury experience, best to look for better options. The manager did not even reach out directly to us after we let them know of the issues. Very unfortunate that our recommendation is take a hard pass.
