base island. Getting here was complicated as the naval base doesn't allow cars to drive up through to the restaurant, and it wasn't signposted. After a short wander through some seemingly empty but well kept buildings, and lots of tweeting birds (fantastic oasis a stones throw from Amsterdams centre), we finally arrived and were greeted with a very warm handshake. We were told that guests usually arrive on a bicycle and take the Commandantburg footbridge that links Kattenburg with the main landmass of Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands. As we later discovered this place was full of locals and off the tourist map. We were immediately served some light sourdough bread and some crisp lightly pickled and flavoursome vegetables, as an amuse. This set the tone and standard of the menu to come, with an emphasis on flavour, light and modern. The menu is 5 courses, built up so that you can pick from 5 choices in each category. I had 3 courses and left feeling comfortably full. The restaurant sits right by the water, with fantastic views and inside is in a long high ceiling, former canteen that was originally built as a ammunition storage. The decor is simple, warm, modern and light.( I counted 60 ceiling lamps -great use of time while waiting for my dining mate to get through his 5 courses. The unique element here is the fully open (floor to ceiling) open kitchen. The waiting staff are knowledgeable, helpful and seem to like their jobs, and the 5 page German only wine list! Overall a warm recommendation to venture out to Kattenburg island and experience some modern German (read nordic/ Northern European) cuisine pared with some sublime German wines in a very special setting.
