Smith & Wollensky New York Reviews from The Last Year
3 stars because they steak was delicious but my friend got
3 stars because they steak was delicious but my friend got food poisoning from the oysters. I used to come here every single year for my anniversary. We always sat upstairs so not sure if that was the difference but the downstairs (or just the fact I hadn't been here in 10 years) was quite unpleasant. Very very busy and we were sat in the walkway of serving flow. I constantly was bumped into the entire meal. Not the amazing vibe it used to be. The food is still excellent but the atmosphere was not.
Best prime rib ever.
Fantastic service. Seeing waiters well dressed is plus as well. Ambiance is wonderful as well.
Sat at bar to have dinner.
Excellent food and service, plus the house wine by the glass was exceptional.
Food and service are absolutely AMAZING.
Has become my new favorite place in midtown Manhattan. FABULOUS wine selection. Art was amazing. Chef's KISS extraordinaire!
Service was top notch, decor is old steakhouse style.
Unfortunately the steaks were meh. They were fine but really lacking flavor. Everyone at the table used a lot of salt, even those of us that never use salt. It was fine but we would seek out an alternative steakhouse next time.
Food was very good.
Steak was cooked to perfection and so were the sides. One of the premier steak houses in NYC. Great experience, staff was on point without being over bearing. Will return soon.

I have eaten here before and had dinner here tonight which really hit the spot. Every bite was better than the one before. The staff was attentive and caring. The Mac and cheese was unreal as was the creamed spinach! Will be back! Yum!

Came here for a late night Sunday dinner and wasn't disappointed. Although they were out of the prime rib at the time, the steak was cooked perfectly and very tender. The service was exceptional and food was brought out promptly. The environment is on the fancier end but the bar area where I sat was a little more casual. Drinks were poured at the table side and were delicious. On the more expensive end, but the quality of the food made it worth it. Would definitely return again!
My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary
My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary here last night and it was truly amazing. Ronnie was our server and Brice was also helping - they were beyond words phenomenal... they were attentive and so accommodating. They made wonderful suggestions for our meal and we're really happy we took their advice. We had delectable salads (wedge and Caesar with anchovies) and shared a porterhouse steak with two sides (sautéed spinach and the onion rings) - everything was great! Putting the food aside, the care we received from Ronnie and Brice was outstanding. We were treated to surprise glasses of prosecco and cheesecake for dessert which was so special. We really are so grateful to S&W for their hospitality but Ronnie's and Brice's warmth and genuine demeanor was palpable. We will request to be seated in their section the next time we go... and strongly suggest others do the same.

This place was recommended to us by a friend here in California. We were going to NY for a few days and walked here from our hotel.... Let me tell you, it was worth every step. Starting with the atmosphere, we felt like we were in a movie. The bartender's seemed rough for us California girls but they were so kind and helpful. It was packed! We got dirty martinis with blue cheese olives (duh) and they were made to perfection. We ate a filet and a wedge salad and let me tell you I still dream about it. We don't have food like this in cali and it was an east coast dream. Everything that night was easily my favorite thing about New York simply cause of the atmosphere and bartenders. We went to the "grill" side of the restaurant and we just had a blast. I recommend going here if you want to live out your early 2000s NY Rom-com movie dreams. It felt like that.

A fantastic experience! All - round perfection from food to "white - glove service" to Lin.... Thank you! Wonderful!!!!

Sat on the second floor this time around - comparing it to downstairs it felt a bit overcrowded and noisy. The steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare & the creamed spinach was delicious as always. The bacon was overly salty for me but that was expected and the mustard sauce was not a fan favorite.

Ask for Lin! I came here to celebrate passing the bar exam with my parents. We had the best time! Lin took great care of us, and the food was amazing. Everything was perfect!
Great night with Donal.
Amazing baked potato. Infinity squared stars for the place and bartender Donal.
Great Steakhouse that makes you wait too long
The reservation was for Saturday night at 8:30 PM and they finally seated us at 9:15 PM. If that had not been the case, I would have given this restaurant a 5 star. I hate having to wait more than about 10 minutes. The service was excellent, the food was perfect. A very noisy busy place.
I had my mother's day dinner at Smith and wollensky today.
Everything was delicious except the creamed spinach. But probably even better than the food was the service. Huge shout out to Ryan, Brad and Ronnie and the ladies at the front when you come in. Everyone was exceptional.
Disappointing
Atmosphere and service good. Food very disappointing, if the same food was severed at the lower “class” restaurant you’d said it was just ok..a bit average overall
In NY for business trip and looking for spot for dinner
In NY for business trip and looking for spot for dinner with vendor. This definitely did not disappoint. Great atmosphere and the food was excellent. Service was personable, relaxed and excellent. Will be a go to place in the future for business and taking the wife for an excellent romantic dinner. Checks all the boxes.
Big Prime Rib
The large prime rib is too big to eat. The clam chowder is large, so if two people share it, I think you can fully enjoy the steak 🥩. The filet is tender and you can enjoy the taste of the meat. It goes well with your favorite Napa wine.
Fabulous Experience!!
Ronnie made our anniversary celebration extra special. Love this restaurant, but his extra touches really made the evening.
Restaurant with star prices
This restaurant was recommended to us by friends. I have to say that it disappointed our expectations. Chaotic, background noise and people talking almost shouting, unbearable. As for the food, everything was very expensive but not up to par. Wine list unwatchable for the prices. Average quality, everything very spicy. Abundant quantities. Fairly attentive customer service.
Wine and steak
Amazing wine list with lots of US and EU options, but limited cheaper options. Steak is great (also with the spinach) and the carrot cake is famous.... And massive!
Sam was our waiter and he had amazing service easily top
Sam was our waiter and he had amazing service easily top notch and he was great to chat with Was the best
If I could leave a no star review for service I would.
...approached the hostess stand and asked if it was ok to enjoy a glass of wine outside- I wanted to enjoy the sunny day. The hostess was very accommodating and pleasant HOWEVER- a waiter later approached and asked if I was ready to order.... I told him I was just having a glass of wine.... He was very rude and stated that I needed to order food if I'm sitting at a table.. that "It was the rule"... I explained that I specifically stated to the hostess my desire to just have a glass of wine and sit outside-- he "huffed" and said " well, since you are already here you can stay" and walked away. Later, when he gave me my bill he attempted to be pleasant... too late buddy. I complained to management prior to leaving... just got an insincere apology. I t was my birthday... just wanted to enjoy the day..... later went to MiMi's for dinner-- they know how to treat customers and the food is great!!
Disappointing
We had to wait for 20 minutes while the table was actually ready: it is only when I asked for the third times that we were brought to our table. Steaks are excellent but medium rare cooking is closer to rare. Service was very poor and quite unfriendly. Disappointing experience overall
The boyfriend made reservations here for a birthday
The boyfriend made reservations here for a birthday celebration the day of (it's a Sunday though). We were seated once we arrived and the servers were very helpful. To start, we got the 3 Shrimp Cocktail ($19) and Thick Cut Steakhouse Bacon ($21). The shrimp was good and plump, but definitely pricey for just 3 pieces. I was told the bacon is a must here, but it was a bit too roasted and charred for me that it dried out the meat. We also got a bowl of complimentary bread, but most of it were a bit stale and hard to enjoy. Then came the main entrees and I got the Filet Mignon ($57/$64 --not sure which cut I got since they never asked?) with Lobster Tail ($15). I love me a surf and turf, so this is the perfect combo. The steak was cooked nicely at medium rare, but needed the steak sauce for extra flavor. The lobster was solid, but also really needed the butter for flavor too. The 15oz lobster ($72) seemed like a lot, but wasn't much. We also had the Bone-In Ribeye Steak ($78), which had a lot of fatty pieces. I can't say the meal impressed me much, but the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake ($15) was the most memorable part. I love the ice cream bar, so it was fun to see it as a cake with the strawberry crumble for the crust. I'm inbetween a 3 or 4 for this spot, but just wasn't too impressed as I found more things I didn't like. For the price point, I'd opt for another option before this.
Went for dinner here tonight and celebrated my husbands
Went for dinner here tonight and celebrated my husbands birthday. Really appreciated the ambiance and service. Loved the seafood tower to start. Drinks were great, wine selection very good. My husband loved his steak and I loved my lobster. Sides and dessert were ok but really the main dish and seafood tower were the stars.. as they should be.

Just happened to enjoy the $20 spring wine week with my family this week. My wife and son were first impressed by the lobster salad appetizer. Our waiter was very attentive regarding the wine selection. The reservation at an early morning (11:45 am) was very friendly and crowded. We considered the following meals: Cajun rib steak for my son, which he enjoyed; my wife liked the halibut fish order and I had the prime rib, that was cooked perfectly. The side dishes were mashed potatoes and broccoli, okay nothing wrong with the choices. Our dessert of three carrot cakes were ordered to go. My general assessment is that there was just too much wine at that time of day but you cannot beat the price!

Best steak house in New York City I always go here and my go to is the Cajun ribeye steak they never fail it's always so goooood

We had the best dining experience last night! Lyn, our server, was soo cool and the food was amazing. He was right about the bacon app it was heavenly. We go to our las vegas smith and wollensky, so to come see the original one was nice. Im only leaving a review bc the staff was so pleasant!!!!! We love lyn, his busser and the cool bartender from Dublin. Thank you guys!!!!!
So disappointing.
Went for my sister's birthday and the waiter was rushing us the entire evening, no time to explain things, and that was before the restaurant got completely packed. It was a Friday night, and I understand it gets really busy. There were not a lot of people there we first arrived and no one came to our table to offer water or anything. We had to call someone. Not the typical service I expected at Smith and Wolinsky. I've been to other locations and they were fabulous. The food was OK, I had to return my steak. It wasn't the right temperature. The others in my party also had the same problem, but just kept their steaks anyway. I would never go back to this restaurant. Disappointing.
Definitely a NY staple, this steakhouse does not disappoint.
Although it's not one my favorite steaks in the city, the service, food and everything about it is really good. I went during the unlimited wine Valentine's weekend and had a great time! Wedge Salad ~~ A solid. The sauce is a bit too 'mayonnaise'y' to my taste, but I loved the crispy bacon bits. Thick Bacon ~~ Delicious. Probably my favorite thick bacon in the city. Porterhouse Steak ~~ It was cooked to perfection. The taste was delicious it did not need any sauce whatsoever. So good. Throughout the dinner, the waiter kept on pouring the wine and was always available for any questions or anything we needed. Loved our experience.
For all the pomp and circumstance around steak restaurants,
For all the pomp and circumstance around steak restaurants, it's always ultimately about the quality of the food and service. Which is why eating at the bar is my favorite part of S&W. Same quality food, possibly even better more friendly and welcoming service, and a great ambiance.
Steer away
Way too expensive food, and very noisy in the room. We had to sit and shout at each other. The tables are far too small. The toilets were not clean. All in all, this does not hold up compared to the crazy price.
5+star for venue, service, food absolutely perfect!
This place is top notch. The service was 💯, food excellent with unbelievable portions and house wine the nicest we've ever had. We loved it so much and our experience there with the staff was exceptional. We ended up going back two days later for lunch and that was excellent too. Nicest steak we ever tasted and we still talk about it some years later. We are heading to Smyth and Wollensky London on Friday and so excited. This restaurant is by far one of the best restaurants in NYC, can't wait to see what London has in store. 5+++++ stars - magnificent! We were on holidays from Ireland in NYC for 10 days and when we get back you'll be the first place we'll visit. 😁🇮🇪💚
Cheers on Steriods
Came to this spot on an unplanned dinner. Made reservations at the restaurant and ended up at the 'grill' which is the bar section of the restaurant. Albeit very very crowded... the service was great as well as the food. Victor & Matt were our waiters who obviously have the best Manager in the world @ Jeff ( no this isn't a paid advertisement lol). Our food suggestions: *Crab cakes *Margharitas *Lamb chops *Lemon chicken *Fresh Spinach ( I asked for it to be cooked with garlic but maybe they cook it like that Anyway) tasty! *Clam chowder ( delicious but it has bacon) We felt very welcome as first timers. Our waiters were as awesome as the food. By the way.... don't be fooled by the appetizer portions (they're modest) ... Dinner portions and sides are huge! Thank you for an enjoyable dinner. Will be back!
Like a school canteen with overexcited adults
We went on a Thursday night for the 'weekend' wine and dine offer which for $95 dollars per person provides 'copious' amounts of wine and 3 courses which does not include sides. There was a choice of prosecco, rose, red or white wine. The latter two were undrinkable but the first two were nice. Food, calamari very good served with a very nice tomato sauce, good bread basket and our other starter of tomato with mozzarella was good but nothing to write home about. Sirloin steak again good but nothing to write home about, lemon pepper chicken ok, jacket potato with all the 'fixings' actually very tasty and the hash browns, 'meh'. Our waiter was a very nice gentleman who was running about like a madman but at no point were our glasses allowed to get even near empty and he checked we were happy on every course. So why such an average score. Well the final bill came to $291 dollars and we were squeezed onto a table which although it was for four and there were only two of us, only just fitted us and our food on it. Our table was so close to the one behind that myself and a diner behind me could not move without our chairs hitting each other. The noise level was so loud it was actually uncomfortable and everyone seemed to be quite drunk and I suppose the best description I can give is that there seemed a 'pressure to enjoy yourself as loudly and as brashly as possible with lots of testosterone in the air. This place does not even have a modicum of finesse, which at those prices is surprising, there are no quiet cosy corners in which to enjoy a dinner for two but it does what it says on the tin - but only that.
Great food and service
We had a very enjoyable dinner in the food was excellent. They were extremely busy and the volume level in the dining room was excessively loud. If you are looking for a place to have an intimate dinner, this is not the place. That said, my steak was cooked perfectly and the accompanying were excellent. The waiter did a great job considering the busy night.
Good NYC steakhouse
Having previously dined at S&W for New Year's Eve 2021/22 and had a fantastic experience, we decided to do the same thing this year 2023/24 on our recent trip to NYC. Although we had an overall good evening, it sadly did not quite live up to our expectations. Upon arrival our table was not ready and we had to wait in the bar which was (expectedly for NYE) very crowded. Once shown to our table, our server was great and very informative on the menu. We had a 9pm seating and aimed to stagger our courses so that we could celebrate midnight at the restaurant. As a party of 4, for starters 1 had the calamari which was OK, another had the shrimp cocktail which was good, and then 2 of us shared the Smith's Bouquet (cold seafood). The Bouquet was fantastic with generous, juicy prawns, crab and lobster and delicious homemade tomato sauce and horseradish. For mains, 1 had the lamb chops which were OK and 3 of us had Bone-In Rib Steaks which were all undercooked and had to be sent back. These were then returned to use but hadn't been rested so our steaks were swimming in blood, oil and fat which didn't make the eating experience pleasant. The mains in general were also over-seasoned and especially salty. The sides of creamed spinach and steamed asparagus were delicious. At midnight the staff shared round some celebratory hats and a glass of prosecco which was a lovely gesture and a great way to start the new year. Overall, we had a memorable evening although the mains didn't quite live up to our expectations being undercooked, served in juices, and overly salty.
Loved the place
Great food, drinks and desserts. Bit expensive but it is worth it. The service was perfect. I'll come back, hopefully soon.
