Tucked away at the end of magnolia street in a residential/industrial neighborhood of west oakland is Soba Ichi. Formerly the location of a tasty pizza joint. Their menu is forever changing. Which is cool because you can keep trying new things. It's a bummer if you fall in love with something on their menu. Like their vegan eel which we have yet to catch there again. The ambiance/vibe is very moody, cute, and Japanese in aesthetic. The seating is mostly Japanese style booths except for one accessible table to the right when you enter. Not the most fat friendly or disabled friendly spot. We sat near the door and for obvious reasons it was really cold. The food was really special. Each dish was fresh, had complex flavor profiles. Lots of umami. My favorite was the omelette. Such an incredible texture and flavor. The service was ok. It was a super busy night and so I get it. We were only asked once if we wanted more water but there is a self serve station we discovered after walking around to find the bathroom where we were able to get water refills ourselves. You order outside and then get a number. So while the food is "fancy" don't expect the service to be the same as a fine dinning restaurant. Dishes I recommend (note menu changes frequently so these may not be here when you go):-Homemade Tofu with Negi & Myoga (not pictured is the soy based sauce we poured over it) this dish was so tasty. Simple but delicious. The sauce was so good we dipped our omelette in it to enjoy every last drop. -Tamagoyaki - Japanese savory omelette with shredded radish as a palette cleanser- this was my favorite dish. The layers were immaculate. The flavor was so umami and INCREDIBLE. Next time I will order my own. I didn't want to share this one . -Kale & Roasted Kobocha Salad - roasted kale, roasted kabocha, roasted tomato, blue cheese crumble with miso walnut dressing - this salad was really good. The blue cheese created this really nice sharp complexity to the flavor profile. The kale was supple and had been well massaged. The tomatoes were sweet and perfectly roasted. And while the dressing didn't photograph well is was absolutely delicious and creamy. -Veggie Soba - soba noodles in hot soup topped with bok choy, grilled bean curd, negi & yuzu (vegan) - this soup was simple but so incredible. The noodles were fresh and delicious. The broth was sooooo soothing and the spice gave it a little punch. Really loved it. -Soba no Mi Pudding - this dessert was so special. I would describe it as a Japanese crème brûlée. It was giving me custard vibes more than pudding in terms of consistency. It was topped with toasted buckwheat berries which gave it a delicious crunch with was a nice contrast to the sweet and creamy pudding.
