Yes, greatly exceeded expectations
This experience greatly exceeded expectations! I have been writing reviews on TripAdvisor for close to three decades and since then I have 1) rarely given any restaurant an excellent rating and 2) I have never written that a restaurant exceeded my expectations, because other than one in Guatemala for our 25th wedding anniversary (and I have now been married over 42 years), no other upscale restaurant had greatly exceeded my expectations. Anyway, the food was great. The experience is pleasant with the owner, Ian Somm, explaining each dish as well as the wine. The owner was easy to talk to and was nice when it came to specific foods we did not want. We (my wife and I) definitely intend to come back.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful wine & dining experience
This was such a unique wine & dining experience. We have friends that have been telling us to go for years, and we finally booked a Paso trip far enough in advance to get a reservation for my husbands 40th birthday. Outrageously delicious courses of food… paired with a wide array of wines from around the world… fun communal setting… thank you Ian for such a memorable experience. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing, One of a Kind Experience!
The food and the wine were fabulous. It was a wonderful opportunity to taste wines we would not get anywhere else. Ian creates a fun atmosphere and is so knowledgeable. What a memorable experience!
Be the first to ReplyA plate of Lima beans really
I was expecting unbelievable food at this place. We were both disappointed totally except for the knowledge that the owner had regarding the wines. I think if I remember correctly our second course was an entire plate of Lima Beans. I was in shock. I have eaten many places. I am not a snob but consider myself a foodie and this place don’t cut it for me. Here was my meal Cheese Sun dried tomato Beans Lentils with duck sausage Steak with shrooms Donut and rice pudding and orange I know people live this place but not worth the time. He should hire a chef and serve and explain wines.
Be the first to ReplyONE OF A KIND.......
Expectations totally met and exceeded. Ian is certainly a master oenologist with real WORLD credentials and a passionate educator. An exceptional wine experience with a bit of culinary theater for the right audience.......very very well done.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing, unique wine tasting and dining experience
Unique, extraordinary, wine tasting, food pairing, story telling, and educational experience facilitated by master sommelier and chief Ian Adamo in a cozy atmosphere at Somm’s Kitchen in Paso Robles, CA. The wide selection of the wines served at dinner time is amazing. The mere fact that 14 different champagnes, white wines, roses, and red wines are served - some retail-priced at several hundreds of dollars -is mind blowing when you compare it with the affordable price of each dinner which includes food (several courses) and wine /champagne tasting. The setting is intimate and the restaurant itself is unassuming and tucked away (though a short walk from the park / town square in Paso Robles). The place comes to life with each guest arriving for dinner at 6p.m. and Ian’s welcoming and warm greetings. When everyone arrives and sits down at the counter, it feels like you are meeting new friends. There is great wine, delicious food, and good conversation, which is refreshing and much needed, especially nowadays when we spend so much time online. Ian tells stories and educates the guests on the wine and champagne, which is a fabulous experience for those who drink only socially and need to know what to pick from the wine list at a restaurant, as well as wine connoisseurs who are striving to attain Ian’s level of wine expertise. I was impressed by the high quality of the food and the simplicity of each dish. This was our second time at Somm’s Kitchen and the food was even better than the first time. We have been to numerous Michelin star-rated restaurants in the U.S. and internationally. Frequently, what you find is great service, beautifully decorated food that sometimes tastes great and sometimes not so great. At Somm’s Kitchen, each dish simple, absolutely delicious, pure in taste, and unpretentious. You don’t taste butter or heavy creams. The preparation is thoughtful and intentional, and pairs well with the wine you are tasting. But if you are looking for a place that emphasizes on food decorations and less on simplicity and the actual taste of the food, this may not be the place you are looking for. During our dinner, we were served mozzarella & burrata cheese ball with poppy seeds in roasted tomato sauce, melted herb and truffle-infused cheeses on a wooden board, specially-steamed scallops, steamed and roasted on bamboo leaves salmon, cognac-infused chicken, beef with mushrooms, and for dessert a cinnamon-crumble vanilla cake and donut holes with some chocolate sauce. We loved it all. It’s always a memorable night at Ian’s Somm’s Kitchen and if you are fortunate enough to get in off the wait list or plan early enough to book this place a few months in advance, you will have a blast. This dinner and wine tasting experience could easily cost triple of what Somm’s Kitchen actually charges if you consider the high quality of the top shelf alcohol and ingredients in the food, and the personalized experience. I am blown away by Ian’s humble yet super friendly demeanor, his knowledge and skills, and the way he treats each guest like a good friend. Somm’s Kitchen has my full recommendation and we definitely hope to be back.
Be the first to ReplyGood wines Okay food
It was a fun and educational experience. The selection of champagne and wines was excellent which spoke highly of lan's experience as a sommelier. He also did an amazing job managing the entire dining room of 14(?) guests. There was not a single dull moment. However, food was inconsistent and somewhat disappointing. While a couple of plates (eg., 1st course cheese and soup) were tasty, most of the items were not very special and salmon and duck sausage were just way too salty. It's good value if your expectation is just good wines pairing with an abundant amount of food, but don't expect Michelin star quality experience.
Be the first to ReplyAnother very memorable dine/wine experience
We were very fortunate once again to have a wonderful dining experience at Somm’s Kitchen. Ian’s conversation, food, wine and ambiance are all exceptional. Truly memorable what he was able to do with what would otherwise simply be a pumpkin, a slice of cheese, and a donut….along with the additional courses. He now has the top two spots in my personal list of most memorable dining experiences. We hope to return.
Be the first to ReplyThat Truly Special Restaurant Experience
It doesn't happen often, but every now and then you find that very special restaurant where the overall experience transcends "just another great meal". Ian at Somm's Kitchen creates that rarest of dining experiences. Each night behind his 14-person crescent chef's counter, Ian blends his food, wine and genuine joy with a fascinating running dialogue of all that he presents. You come into Somm's having blindly paid for a dinner and pairings without having any clue as to what will be presented before you that evening. As Ian said, "you put all of your trust in him." Ian does not disappoint. He overdelivers with wonderful flavors and extraordinary wines and you leave feeling better (and more knowledgeable) for the experience. It simply doesn't get any better than this!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Experience
This was a truly amazing, unique, personalized experience and one we will never forget. Ian is a fantastic chef with incredible wine knowledge. We learned so much about the differences in wines and really appreciated the opportunity to taste different ones side by side. Our group shared the planned wines for the evening as well as a couple extras that Ian added in based on the direction the conversations went and things he learned about people in the group over the course of the evening. The food was also very good and very well prepared. Each course had a perfectly paired wine. There was more than enough food for everyone and more was offered with the courses to those who desired additional - much like it would be in a home kitchen. We hope to return to Paso again some day and would probably plan our trip around when we were able to get a reservation at Somm's Kitchen. Thank you so much Ian for the experience.

Drop everything and come have this amazing passionate food and wine experience with IAN! You will never find someone as humble but yet gifted in his love for Food and Wine. Most amazing wine and food pairing we have ever had. And we have them as often as possible!
Be the first to ReplyA rare and enjoyable experience
This was such a fun experience. Each wine/champagne as well as each course was specially picked and explained. It was much more knowledge than I could absorb but fun to listen to and I could not begin to adequately describe each course. Some of the courses took days to prepare. Very, very impressive to say the least.
Be the first to ReplyThe Highlight of Our Trip!
What a great experience! If you have the opportunity to eat at Somm's do it. it is one of those meals that is more of an experience than just a meal. Ian is very talented, not in just the food but the presentations, the wine, getting all 14 patrons engaged in conversation. The wine and food sublime. One of my top 5 meals ever!
Be the first to ReplyAn unforgettable experience!
Our first time in-person since the pandemic started. We did take out often from Somm’s during the pandemic and it was fantastic. But it was so wonderful to be back at the restaurant with Ian for the full experience. Such a humble man with a passion for great food and wine. Every course was phenomenal and the wines paired with each course sublime! Our favorite restaurant in Paso! If you have to get on the waitlist do it, it’s worth it. An unforgettable experience!
Be the first to ReplyIt was our VERY lucky day, 5 stars plus
We received a text on Friday morning that Somm's had last minute cancelations, and we were on the waitlist for that evening. It was a truly exceptional food and beverage experience with such a passionate chef and beverage expert. I was amazed at the obvious interest and TIME that Ian puts into the preparation of each of the 10 food courses, and the selection of paired local and international wines..... it is definitely a rare experience to be one of the 7 couples around the curved counter, listening to Ian. We certainly hope to be able to return in the future.
Be the first to Replya fantastic dinner in Paso Robles
This is a very quaint place where the dining is only limited to 14 people at the counter in a chef's kitchen setup. The host is the chef/owner, Ian Adamo and he made everyone very comfortable in visiting his restaurant for dinner. Some of the guests were repeat customers, which says a lot about the experience. We were on the wait list and by chance it cleared to our good fortune. The food was excellent and so was the wine pairing it came with. There were about 8 courses of which 2 were dessert courses and 12 wine pairings of which 3 were bourbon/cognac type. What made it a memorable experience was the chef, Ian, himself, who explained each course and the wines prior to tasting them. He carefully explained the courses and why the wines he chose went with each course. He tied everything together with his narrative which made everything a complete package. If you go to Paso Robles, this is a must place to dine!
