My first choice for BBQ.
Coal is used to make the taste more authentic. Service is as would be expected. In the 90's it had a nice smoky smell and visual. It's more filtered air now so it is must less smoke. Recommended.

Tucked away in a small grungy shop in LA's Koreatown, Soot Bull Jip offers an authentic Korean BBQ experience with traditional charcoal grills. Amidst the glitzier spots, Soot Bull Jeep stands out for its down-to-earth vibe and focus on quality cooking over open flames. Sure, it may not have the flashy decor of newer joints, but who needs that when you've got mouthwatering pork ribs and some cold noodles to wash it down with? The flavors here are on point, and that charcoal grilling adds a delicious smokiness you won't find elsewhere. Now, let's talk about the price. It's definitely on the higher end, around $60-80 per person, but trust me, it's worth every penny. Sure, I wish the meat was a bit more seasoned for the cost, but that charcoal grill experience? Priceless. What really sets Soot Bull Jeep apart is its commitment to tradition. As one of the last spots in the area still using charcoal grills, dining here feels very authentic to me as a Korean. Overall, if you're craving authentic Korean BBQ with a side of nostalgia, Soot Bull Jip is the place to be. Just be prepared to smell like KBBQ for several days--you won't regret it!
Be the first to ReplyThe classic charcoal BBQ spot in Koreatown.
Still the same after many many years. The last time we went we didnt even smell like charcoal, seema like they have cleaned up their vents. All in all a great time.
Be the first to ReplyGotta support this OG Korean BBQ restaurant.
One of my faves in town especially since Chosun Galbee's standard have dropped. The only restaurant in koreatown that is still using good ol' charcoal. It doesn't look fancy as the new ones but the food is great. Definitely get the baby back ribs and spicy cold noodles. On the pricier ($60-80 per person) but well worth it. Service is iffy when they are busy but food's solid and I keep coming back. Also, be prepared to smell like bbq!
Be the first to ReplySimple set up, great vibes and service as well.
Good quality proteins and the sides complement any choice. Price is fair
Be the first to ReplyFood was good, but honestly for the price I'd've expected
Food was good, but honestly for the price I'd've expected the meat to be better marinated and seasoned than it was. Honestly, it tasted like nothing much had been done to it. Still, you can't beat charcoal grilling, and it wound up being wonderfully tasty. The meat is so expensive that it's a little insulting to be charged if you want more banchan. Garlic in foil is $2. It would be much classier to give these away. Still in all, a good experience.

Best Korean BBQ in town! Only place in town where they use natural charcoal. Five best service and quality.

You would have never guessed it from an outsider looking at the storefront, but this place is epic! Their meats are amazing. I came here with my sister in law who raved about it and it did not disappoint. You are getting what you're paying for... good quality meats and ingredients, and the server will also cook the meat for you. Easily the best KBBQ spot I've been to that I can remember. It's always a good reminder to note that AYCE BBQ never rivals that of premium a la carte ordering.... From their ban chan to the grill, I already can't wait to show this place off to my loved ones. I feel like I just got the low down of the best K BBQ spot in LA!
Be the first to ReplyThe serving portions are so small compared to the price.
A lot of bone and not enough meat. Also the AC was so cold, and our server was inattentive to us, we had to call him over to change grill, cut meat, etc .he was not helpful at all, did not give info about serving sizes. don't recommend. 다른 고깃집에서는 먹은 후에 배도 부르고 기분도 좋고 한데
Be the first to ReplyOG SPOT FOR KBBQ.
The price went up while the amount of meat they give has went down. Sometimes when u order another they don't give the same quality meat or older meat. I can tell by the taste. The last time I went it was ok. Hoping they keep up with their quality for the price they charge.

The prices are crazy jacked up now $50 per person for 3 meats. The same low style janky dirty things everywhere. Used to be a bargain. Tiny sample sizes of all the fixings.
Be the first to Replythe real charcoal doesn't just add immensely to the flavor
the real charcoal doesn't just add immensely to the flavor of the food here -- but it literally adds to the hazy atmosphere. You may smell this place before you see it. We can all agree that most Korean BBQ places in K-Town are great, but this place takes it up a notch. Soot Bull Jeep may be my favorite restaurant of all time... (fyi: unfortunately, it's not all you can eat.)
Be the first to ReplyFirst true Korean BBQ and was totally blown away.
So darn good!!! Very authentic and amazingly delicious. Wish we lived closer to go more often!!

* Price: $25-$50 per person, depending on choices of protein. Beef tongue and tribes are lower end, rib-eye is on the high end of their menu. 3 star* Ambiance: simple, BBQ joint with brazier grill with real charcoal in the middle of the table. It can get pretty smoky. 3 star * Location: Korean Town. There is street parking aeound the restaurant and small parking for customers next to the restaurant. * Meals: high qualitive proteins (ribs, rib-eye, tongue, shrimp, etc.), simple banchan selections, tasty marinated saam (lettuces or greens to wrap bbq meat); 5 star.* service: pleasant, fast. The servers will come by to help you with the grill. 4 star.We have been coming to this joint from time to time for the last 2 decades. When we first came here, this place was so popular that we had to wait in line for over an hour. With the growth of K- town, there are many other BBQ restaurants. Nowadays, we can just get there during peak hours and get seated immediately. It is still our favorite BBQ place in town because they use charcoal for the grill. It does add a nice smoky taste to the BBQ. We had rib-eye steak ($50), about 12 oz, more than 1 inch thick, and very tender, wrapped with saam and dipped in their house dressings.Saam: lettuces, with thin scallion, with vinegar dressing. There are 2 dipping sauces, vinegar and soy sauce. Both are tastyWe also got shrimp ($40), a dozen of large shrimps. Come with empty stomach and prepare to smell like BBQ!
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite BBQ joint in Ktown.
They spoil you in excellent service and their kimchi is excellent. They use COAL for BBQ!!!!! ALL ban chans and proteins are of superior quality. My servers were awesome, and the women cooking in the kitchen adds a sense of comfort and happiness as well. They offer valet parking, the guys are friendly and helpful too!
Be the first to ReplyYes. Yes. YES! First time having Korean Barbecue and this
Yes. Yes. YES! First time having Korean Barbecue and this was the perfect spot for me to get an introduction. I went with the Bulgogi after doing some research on what I wanted to try and I was absolutely blown away! The marinated meat is Sooooooooooo good! Along with the different flavor injections within the different parts of the banchan i am beyond satisfied with my choice to come here. Definitely a spot that I'll bring friends to in the future and we will enjoy each and every bite!
Be the first to ReplySo amazing awesome delicious Korean barbecue in the middle
So amazing awesome delicious Korean barbecue in the middle of Koreatown. Went here with a couple of friends - early - and it was no no-nsense delicious meat with perfect service. Exactly what we wantedHad the rib-eye which they grilled over the wood fire and then cut up with scissors and portioned. So delicious with a couple of sauce options. Then did the bulgogi which were marinated and wonderful. Followed up with short ribs for a perfect meal.Something great about cooking over the wood fire and these guys are efficient and chill.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the oldest and still considered one of the best
One of the oldest and still considered one of the best Korean BBQ in Los Angeles located in the heart of Ktown, this is one of a very few who were grandfathered in to allow to use charcoal for grilling as they are now banned in LA. And if you grew up with true char-grilled the smokiness and taste is far superior than gas-grilled. The moment you walk in the scent of charcoal smoke is strong and there is nothing fancy with the decor because it's all about great meat. They are famous for the marinated kalbi (beef short ribs) and they serve the bone with the musculoskeletal-tendinous meat on the grill. We also tried the marinated pork ribs. First of all the meat was very tender, juicy and sweet, perfect on a bed of lettuce and kimchi. My favorite is the tendon on the bone which adds crunch with every bite. The pork ribs are like the old barbecue we grew up in the Philippines and the charred bones with the meat to end it all nibbling every bit is the best experience. Service was a little slow and the banchan was so-so but we're here for the meat. As kbbq comes and goes we now understand how this place survived the competition. Just don't mind the scent of smoke.

As an avid kdrama fan, this place is wonderful! I have grown to love Korean food through these dramas! As soon as you walk in you see tables full of people happily enjoying conversation, food, soju and beer. The grills are truly charcoal and the crackling sound and sizzle accented by sweet smoke is captivating. You are warned to beware of sparks at your table but your host or server is always overseeing it with douses of ice cubes to tame the flames. The service is excellent, we ordered two types of steak and chicken. The array of various banchan or sides was quite impressive and well presented. A lovely lady came to get our drink orders, she made us feel as if we were in her home, she was the owner, we felt so special. The Soju and beer was brought out immediately and we were happy. The meticulous way they have to cook the meat is impressive, the meat was tender and tasty. The chicken was a major hit at our table also. I'm starting to do a tour of kbbq places and this one is tops on my list!

It's been a while since I dropped a 5 on here. I love my charcoal KBBQ spots, and I've always had my eye on the OG of charcoal kbbq since I've been in LA, and after 8 years of being here I finally tried it, and it did not disappoint. Now while some will cry foul for service and ambiance I'll preface that this place is a zero frills kbbq spot. No TVs no music, just the basics. There's a reason why they've been around for 40+ years. This spot is BYOB so pop your own bottles and pay the low corkage fee if that something you're into.On to the meats. Baby back ribs : Solid. Nice marinade. Not too sweet and not too salty. Perfect for both savory and sweet lovers, and the pork itself was tenderrrrr.Jumulleok: The star of the show. Crazy tender and soaking up the extra flavors from the charcoal set this off. We ordered 3 more plates of this alone. Ribeye: Juicy as can be, and a nice thick cut. I'd probably say based on price grab the jumulleok instead. Somen: Really good flavor, and the noodles were just right. Naengmyeon: Usually we skip it at kbbq spots, but damn theirs was legit. More on the vinegary side, but it was upper tier for kbbq naengmyeon. Overall happy to have finally tried this place. The prices are a bit higher than others, but its quality over quantity, and this is going to be one of those places we try to hit a couple times a year. Come with a group of friends and try a bit of everything!
