In a restaurant that exemplifies the beauty of simplicity, every small detail must be attended to. This tear was indicative of an overall sagging of attention. Our server brought our wine, opened-filled everyone's glass almost to the top and then presented the bottle for me to check the label. The wine, due to insane heat in London (33), was warm, and once 2/3 of the bottle was poured out, short of ice cubes in the glasses, not much could be done. There was a lot of toast (lamb's brains, brown crab, girolles) and all of it was borderline burnt and too tough for even our steak knives. The salads were seriously over dressed, although the dressing was delicious, the overall effect was unpleasant. My grouse was excellent, a properly hung bird cooked to perfection. I have been coming to St. John ever since it opened on each and every trip to London. My last trip was 5 years ago, and the difference between this trip and my last was remarkable and terribly disappointing. We were there on a Friday night and the dining room didn't fill up until 9pm. Like the wine, a victim of the heat I suppose. Have they over extended? The back of the menu is filled up with the other St. John operations. But I went ahead and kept my St John Marylebone reservation and was glad I did. More about that later.
