While in Anaheim last night, I decided to duck into Strong Water on my way home to the South Bay. This was my first visit after it'd been on my radar for maybe a year now and after a foiled attempt with my son after visiting the Original Tiki Marketplace in Garden Grove last month. We were closer to Stowaway then and love it but we wanted to trek up to Anaheim to hit Strong Water for LUNCH since we'd never been there before...and yes, I realize kids are only allowed outside and not inside the bar (boo) but we'd be able to just peak inside, right?? But! Strong Water isn't open for lunch either! (boo) I know, maybe I'm not the Yelp Geek I thought I was for not checking their HOURS before schlepping the 15 minutes out and then back to Stowaway. Those gripes aside, I had a really great experience last night. I think the same fella who is planted outside in many of the pictures on Yelp was there last night and he promptly located a spot for me at the lower bar near the entrance and politely escorted me inside. At first I thought it odd, especially on a relatively early Monday night, to go through the door man process but I get it; the place is pretty small. It was nice to actually get a seat instead of cramming the bar to attempt to order a drink. Since Strong Water is small with relatively narrow spaces, the door man makes complete sense. The staff is actually remarkable at Strong Water, perhaps some of the best I've ever had. Super duper friendly and helpful and not in that annoying kind of way. My receipt says my server was PM but I had two helping me with the menu and with my mug questions; so both the young woman and young man were exceptional. And in making the drinks, too. The young woman recommended I try the Zombie King for my first time and wow, it was truly perfect. Now, I really would have liked it in the Zombie King mug but hey, I get it...things can get kinda rowdy out here in the OC and mugs can get broken and hell, after like 3 sips, all my cares just kinda melted into my giant glass of everything beautiful. You know, it's kinda sad, I think, for me to say that I was truly having a blissful moment getting my buzz on with an absolutely perfect tiki drink. Just a beautiful thing, truly. And I'm sorry, other craft cocktails ain't got nuthin on the perfect tiki drink which this clearly was. And hey, I like craft cocktails but the tiki drink is an EXPERIENCE. Especially with the amazing ambiance all around me while I sat at the bar. Strong Water is a beautifully decorated place, clearly made with love and a treasure chest full of creativity and detail. And when the AI robots come to take over the world, I'ma lock myself up in that bathroom with like 12 locks on it. I was having so much fun all by my lonesome that I didn't want the experience to end AND I wanted a damn drink in a real tiki mug so I decided to buy the awesome "Tales from the Black Lagoon" mug so that I could just drink out of it. Kidding, I love the mug and have ever since I had heard of Strong Water and drooled over their website. And I loved the drink that came in it. Another perfect tiki drink full of yummy flavors. You'd think after two of these cocktails, I wouldn't have a care in the world about the prices but admittedly, my $123 tab (without tip) for two drinks with a mug to take home did sting a little bit. Without the mug, the drinks are about $20; with the mug, they are $95. I know what you're thinking...who in the f is crazy enough to buy a freakin' tiki mug for $75 BUT us tiki fanatics are insane and I'll tell you this...one of those suckers just sold online for like $9k (not a Strong Water mug but a tiki mug, no less). We tiki fanatics cherish these things and spend our lifetimes collecting all that is tiki, Hawaiian, Polynesian...and odd things like Fez's, shrunken heads, hanging lamps out of blowfish....I mean, we are CRAZY. So $75 for a mug from a tiki bar these days is just kinda standard. And yes, it kills me because when I started collecting in 2000, my SHAG mugs were $30 and have become super collector's items. I could probably sell some of them for $500+ today. Oh, but I won't because I just love, love, love my mugs and I'm now happy to have a Strong Water "Tales from the Black Lagoon" in my collection of what, like 100s of mugs. C-R-A-Z-Y. I did ask for some extra swizzle sticks with my mug and PM or the other server, well, whomever was the young woman, hooked me up. She gave me a Strong Water bag, a bunch of coasters, swizzles, stickers and umbrellas. Definitely a nice touch, for sure. I'm already thinking about my next trek to Anaheim so I can check in to bliss once again. Thanks, guys!
