Love SumoMaya.
Brunch is a must do, but come hungry. Dinner has so many delicious options.
Be the first to ReplyI have been to this place twice.
The food was wonderful, tasty, and unique, Would Igo back, no no no. The reason was the music was eardrum LOUD.It destroyed a wonderful evening.
Be the first to ReplyI ended up with food poisoning after eating at this
I ended up with food poisoning after eating at this restaurant on March 13, 2024. Our reservation was for four people and I chose the pan-seared salmon accompanied by rice and asparagus for my meal. Unfortunately, within ninety minutes, I found myself in a state of illness characterized by bouts of vomiting. I am certain that I had a foodborne illness from the salmon. No one else at our table got sick. Additionally, we had poor food service as the kitchen or the waitress failed to place an order for one of the meals. Although we were informed that it was on the way, it took way too much time to arrive, and the three of us had already finished our dinners when her food arrived. I sent an email to the restaurant but received no response. If someone had responded to my email, I would not have shared the bad experience online.

I was craving kimchi fried rice recently and lucky for me, Sumomaya had a great plate and it hit the spot. I also tried a classic roll and it did not disappoint. From what i saw while picking up my to go order, the ambience was nice and im looking forward to dining in soon. Service was quick and easy to order on phone
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed the food and the service was really good.
We got some pomegranate guacamole and also had some rolls to share with the table. Parking is challenging so it's best to use the valet. I tried to park on my own initially, but couldn't tell if it was going to be ok or not so I went to valet. The only thing I didn't love is the Lagunitas IPA that they had on tap. I was looking forward to a really good IPA and was disappointed to learn that that's all they had. Not sure why they would have chosen that mass produced and not very tasty beer when there are so many great IPAs, including some local ones. but that was a minor thing. The only other thing I would say, is that the music was pretty loud and as the restaurant filled up and people were trying to talk over each other it got very loud as the night went on..
Be the first to ReplyTravis was a great server.
Being from out of town we got the best recs and hospitality. We loved our food and drink. If ever back in Scottsdale we will be back (and asking for Travis)!
Be the first to ReplyEverything was delicious!!! Can't wait to come back.
Best sushi roll I've had, perfect amount of spice. The service was awesome and vibe was too.

Lively ambiance. Love the tree in the middle of the restaurant

SumoMaya is a restaurant I love to bringing my out-of-state friends to, there's a very cool atmosphere, great service, and one of my favorite guac's in The Valley.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant was like an oasis of water in the dessert.
The dishes we got were great, and the star was definitely the paella. The mix of flavors had the right balance of richness, spice, and acidity and the seafood was all cooked to perfection without being overcooked. Additionally, the regular ceviche was a great way to start off the meal. Making your own tostada with the array of flavors was fun and engaging, and the flavors were a pure delight. We also got the carna asade, which was a pass - overcooked and relaitvely bland compared to the other dishes. Additionally the specialty cocktails were kinda actively bad. Some of the ratios of liquor to bitters is probably off. While there was a sorta weird vibe with the live DJ and the mix of being a club or restaurant, I think things still worked out in the end.

I'll begin with saying that our server (BRENDAN) was outstanding and very nice. As to our meal last night, none of us plan a return. The type of dishes offered are very familiar to our group and the restaurants that we eat at, which are all located within 10 minutes of SumoMaya are priced similar. The sushi and sashimi and related specialties were all not of top notch quality and no one enjoyed any of these dishes. The tacos were leaded!!! The pad Thai was horrible and was sent back. The calamari was no where of the quality that we eat many times in other restaurants. It was not crispy, the portion size was a fraction of what is normally served and the quality of the fish itself was not high level. Almost every other dish we ordered other than the guacamole (excellent), was excessively highly spiced and almost inedible. The dessert was good but the tres leches cake was not great. All in all, the vibe in the restaurant with over the top loud pounding music was not a great addition to enjoying even this very pedestrian dinner. I think your chefs are out of their league! By the way, as to our music review, we are all big rock fans.

Came here on a girls weekend and wow, what a perfect vibe for cool moms ;-P We truly loved everything we ordered, including the chicken dish (most of us were all about the sushi), so I don't think you'll go wrong with anything that intrigues you.. our waitress was also extremely knowledgeable and helpful to navigate the menu / make suggestions. When it came to cocktails, I ordered a Pisco Sour which I can rarely find in most places... so that was a nice surprise. The overall vibe felt classy, unique (that tree!!), upscale, and modern.. enjoy!!
Be the first to ReplyJust had brunch again here as it's been awhile.
This used to be our favorite spot for HH dinner & socials, So unfortunate they took the big screen tvs down , what a downgrade. We were told they were getting new better ones, but it's been least a year and still nothing. The brunch is quite good with lots of delicious options and endless appetizers, they are small, but very tasty and filling. However, by the time you get to choose your 1 entree your stuffed, and most disappointing you can't even take the meal you paid for home. What a waste. I mean come on they're just going to throw it away anyway. I get not being able to take the endless bites home but your entree you paid for...!!??? Ridiculous! Not sure we'll be back..:/
Be the first to ReplyI am visiting from Toronto and got several recommendations
I am visiting from Toronto and got several recommendations to check out SumoMaya. The ambiance was beautiful, sexy great weekend spot. The food was mediocre, and the service was terrible. We arrived at 8:45 and were sat at the high top table which were uncomfortable. We asked to sit in the patio area at a table of four. We were told no even tho the restaurant was not busy and had plenty of room and did not fill up. We ordered the rock shrimp tempura sushi that was good, very thin compared to how sushi rolls are cut, the Shishito peppers were good. We also ordered the oysters which came leaking and got all over us. They were ok. There was no spoon to serve the dressings for the oysters and no one came back to check on the food or if we needed anything. We used the same dirty plates for the whole meal. The orange chicken was cold. The only thing we really enjoyed was the yakisoba noodles . Overall I wouldn't recommend this place
Be the first to ReplyI am very disappointed in the customer service at this
I am very disappointed in the customer service at this establishment, I live in Chicago, and I have never worked with a restaurant that is SO unaccommodating. We are traveling to AZ with 14 girls for a bachelorette party, and the bride was very excited to eat here. When we tried to make reservations we were told that if we have more then 12 people we would have to go with a preset menu. I explained that we have a lot of dietary restrictions including some people who are vegan, and they proceeded to tell me we can do a vegan preset. Why are 14 people forced to do a VEGAN preset when 2 people are vegan in the group? If we had 12 people we could have ordered off the menu and it is a $1000 minimum. I asked if they can make an exception for 14 people and increase the minimum to $1100 and they refused. I asked for the manager and he said he was the manager. I asked to speak to someone else and he refused to let me speak to someone else. He ended the conversation with telling me I can just bring 12 people... that is ABSOLUTELY RUDE and unprofessional. He was already aware that we were traveling into Scotsdale for a bachelorette party, yet suggested I disinvite 2 people? DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME GOING HERE!

Second time here and I think this place got even better since last year. Every single dish is packed with flavor and perfectly curated. Our waiter Devon was outstanding. You think by first glance that this is just a showy place with good ambiance but it actually has too notch food.

I came here for a birthday brunch on a Saturday with 3 of my close friends. I love the atmosphere in this restaurant and they had a great DJ playing. Our server was great and explained everything perfectly. She was always making sure our drinks were full with the bottomless drinks we all had for $20 a person. We also did the unlimited starters and an entree for $39 a person. We told them to bring out one of each of the starters to try. Everything was unique and delicious! It's a great place for a special occasion brunch!

For those of us who don't like very spicy foods, list in the menu that there's jalapeรฑo in the orange beef! The surprise inclusion of jalapeรฑo in beef ruined it for me.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the second time we have been to this restaurant.
We know that this restaurant is super busy even on weekdays thus we decided to book at least a week a week in advance. When booking in advanced we were limited to high tops at 6:00pm or seats at a bar! High top tables are horrible unless you are there for just a drink! And spending 15-20 dollars for a drink you may prefer a more comfy environment. The only alternative at that time was the bar which provides better service and slightly more comfort! Note bar opens at 4, dining room at 5. When we determine the high tops we're too uncomfortable we asked about alternative tables. We were informed a table could be provided for a limited time. Again at high prices we did not want to be rushed! So how are the drinks in good! Everything is pricey! The drinks are unique! They are good! The fluffy drinks are a bit light on alcohol inMy opinion. If you need to relish the taste of alcohol stick to the classics! For dinner we had a variety of appetizers. The guacamole for 19 dollars was good but not great! Could of used some more spice! A bit bland! Presentation was nice! The sushi, happy ending, was no so happy! The fish tasted off, not fresh! And waited a long time for the sushi so didn't send it back as hungry .As for wait: this is the second time I noticed that the wait for sushi can be long. Note the texts was not full yet. The staffing for sushi making is too limited for the number of diners. Perhaps this is a ploy to order more drinks! So would I come back?! Great environment and drinks! If I want to chill with some drinks, I'll be back snd perhaps skip the good! FYI: no happy hour!

Visited here on a February Saturday night with a group of eight ladies for birthday celebrations and I must say: (1)make reservations, (2) be prepared to SCREAM across the table because the music is cranked up to an obnoxious decibel and (3) there are no dietary modifications. Our waiter was good but not great, he seemed to be given all of the large group tables so I believe he was overwhelmed. We placed orders for drinks and when my bubbles & flowers cocktail arrived and I took my first sip, I was very underwhelmed. The cocktail does need to be stirred but, even after that, it wasn't anything I wanted much more of.In our group, there was someone who has a severe citrus allergy. Unfortunately, all of their dishes contained some sort of citrus/citrus contamination and they couldn't make any modifications which led to her sitting at the table unable to eat anything while we all ate around her. Talk about uncomfortable. For my meal, I went with the korean bbq tacos and veggie yakisoba noodles. These two dishes made up for the lackluster cocktail. Both dishes were full of flavor and filling. I ate every single bite and would recommend both to anyone visiting here.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was so odd.
It's like they were trying too hard and the dishes reflected as such. The food comes out at random times. It's pricey. I for sure won't be back.

Be the first to ReplyIf you have a large party or dietary restrictions, this
If you have a large party or dietary restrictions, this restaurant is NOT for you. I went to brunch here with a group of 11 girls. They split our party into two different tables and had us sit on other sides of the restaurant from each other. We asked multiple times to be seated closer to each other and the host staff told us "we don't do that here and we cannot switch tables." When our waitress approached our table to take drink orders, she was very friendly until she found out none of the people at the table were ordering alcohol. She asked multiple times if we wanted booze and we said maybe after coffee. I then let her know about my dietary restrictions (lactose e tolerant with an egg allergy) and the waitress let me know that they tell people with dietary restrictions not to dine there for lunch because they cannot make modifications. What kind of "upscale" restaurant can't accommodate dietary restrictions in this day and age? THIS ONE. When the waitress came back to take our orders she offered a few options that fit my needs, but none of them contained protein. When I asked for protein to be added she told me "I didn't need it because it was a big plate of noodles." I asked if I could order the burrito without cheese and she said maybe and asked for a backup incase they couldn't modify. I reluctantly said the noodles could work, but I needed protein added. The waitress left and the next thing I knew, they brought something I didn't want in a cracked bowl that needs to be thrown away. When I spoke with the manager, he came to the table yelling at me with a negative attitude. As mentioned - this restaurant is NOT for you if you have allergies or a large group. Go somewhere else- Scottsdale has PLENTY of establishments that can easily accommodate large parties and allergies.
