Excellent Omakase
This was by far one of the best dining experiences we had. The premium quality fresh fish, expertly seasoned and prepared, and the impeccable, pampering service all made it a truly unforgettable occasion at this unpretentious, classy restaurant. For two enjoyable hours, we followed a reiterative ritual of listening to an informative introduction of each new course, admiring its colorful, artistic presentation, aiming our cameras to capture the elegance of a wonderful masterpiece, then appreciatively savoring every delicious morsel of the delicate nigiri, and marveling at how the chef masterfully orchestrated the fresh fish, perfect sushi rice, and other fine ingredients to make each course taste so uniquely and amazingly fantastic. I could barely keep track of the dazzling array of fish from Japan, California, and other parts of the world that made up the multi-course omakase parade. One moment I thought I had a favorite in Scallop Hokkaido, only soon replaced by black throat perch, and so on. One easily ran out of superlatives to describe this omakase experience, a flavorful feast that appealed to senses of sight, taste and smell.

we live in a world of lists and ratings. on any an all lists of 10 best sushi places in LA will be Sushi Zo. it belongs there. Probably top 5. i dont have the time nor the money to go to all but i have been to enough great sushi restaurants; including NYC and Tokyo, to appreciate how good Zo is. It is simple and serene; serious without being unfriendly. the service is impeccable. There is a low volume jazz track in the far background.
oh. the fish? Amazing. impeccably fresh, mostly from Japan and it comes in endless waves of small wonderfulness. by the end, with some great sake you are a little woozy but so glad that you did it. and it lingers with you.
most of us need to save up for Zo; but worth it
a truly great place.
Great omakase experience
This restaurant offers dinner omakase only (~$180/person before tax and tip) and is reservations only. The location in NYC was awarded a Michelin star. If the quality of sushi and overall dining experience we had in the DTLA location is reflective of the overall brand, I am not surprised!
While this was only my second time trying omakase and first time at Sushi Zo, I found the experience to be tremendously enjoyable. I cannot offer much comparison to similarly priced omakase at other restaurants.
Our meal consisted of about 25 courses and each course was beautifully prepared and explained by the chef. We were impressed by the variety of familiar and foreign fish as well as the creativity of each dish.
Some of the dishes we really enjoyed: Santa Barbara uni (the only picture from the night), scallop from Hokkaido, oyster from Seattle, smoked black snapper from Greece, grunt fish, steamed monkfish liver, soup (dash was rich and flavorful), blue crab handroll (the only time soy sauce was provided), chawanmushi (so silky and savory), marinated salmon roe over rice, squid with uni topped with caviar and truffle salt. All the other dishes were also delicious but there were so many, it was hard to remember them all. Most importantly, the sushi rice was perfection (consistency, flavor, and temperature).
The staff was highly attentive and we enjoyed sitting at the counter and interacting with the chef who really opened our eyes to new varieties of fish and flavors. Street parking available at meters (check signs for times enforced), nearby pay lots, and parking garage (near KazuNori).
Sushi
Awesome food! Left here so full! Went here after a full day at universals. The iced green tea was great! The food was amazing! 25 courses of the freshest fish, everything was bite sized. Chef Kevin made sure we were comfortable. Gave us an extra serving of uni rolls. This place has earned a spot in my top 10 sushi places.

I have long heard about this place but never had a chance to try it until last Friday night. To preface, my sushi experience is not terribly extensive. My favorite place thus far is Oshima in Tustin. I had called about 2-3 days ahead of time and was easily about to make a bar reservation for 4 at 6:30pm on friday night. I was told that any thing about 4 people would only be offered a table. We arrived at 6:20pm and found the place empty. I was not concerned and we ended up having a phenomenal dining experience. By the time we left (around 8pm) the place was filling up and bustling.
Location/Ambience: This place was not hard to find. There were ample parking within a short walk. The ambience was nice and modern. Very clean and simple. We were relatively loud and no one gave us a second look. Would definitely be a great place for a date or casual get together. No loud music.
Service: Phenomenal from start to finish. Best service without being snooty. Everyone from the wait staff to the chefs were friendly and warm. The head sushi chef, although young, was very knowledgable and was willing to share with us. Our glass was never half empty. Plates were cleared right away. Recommendations were on point. By far, the best service i have received at a sushi restaurant.
Food: This was what we came for and we were not disappointed. I lost track of the dishes but here were some highlights. I enjoyed having the oysters (with two different vinaigrettes). I also like the sashimi at the beginning. Oshima did not offer that. Then came the plethora of sushi. I really loved their rice. It was warm and soft. Perfect combo with the seafood. The bonita and toro were awesome. They had a number of different mackerels that all tasted different. The Scallops were amazing. I didn't really care for the abalone or giant clams. The Uni was lucious. Monk fish liver was also very good. I enjoyed the salmon roe, it was kinda different. There was a egg custard dish in the middle that was also pretty good. Some of my friends did not enjoy the uni pasta (with squid). I thought it was really really good. I had to request salmon (new zealand), otherwise he would not have brought it out. The toro hand roll was awesome. I had to get another one. One of the best hand rolls ever. Simple yet great. Big disappoints was the lack of sweet shrimp and blue crab hand rolls (not avail). My only slight comment towards the food was I felt the pieces were on the smaller side. Maybe that is the way it is suppose to be, but it felt a little lacking. Oshima had bigger bites and were more satisfying. They recommended a sake and i thought that was the best one i have ever had ($100 bottle).
All in all, it was a great experience tasting all the variety of top notch seafood. However, with that said, I think I would be just as happy eating at Oshima (knowing that I may forfeit the service).
