I rarely write that a restaurant is appaulling, as I like to factor in circumstances which may mean the experience was a one off, but I have to tell you that this place, despite being over priced, which I can forgive, has the worst team of staff I have ever come across, and it is evident this poor culture comes from the top down, because the manager / owner / who ever he was that is in charge, is incredibly arrogant and should not be put customer facing. Had a valentines booking, arrived early and were told to return later, so we returned 10 minutes later and upon arrival, before even being shown to our table we were being told very loud and firm that we have to leave within 2 hours (pretty standard) and how the table must be cleared (obviously looking to turn tables fast), do we understand etc etc, a bit like marching orders and we still have one foot in the doorway at this point... ignored that and continued anyway... Shown to our seats in an empty restaurant (we were first in - so imagine being barked at that you have to hurry up and theres not even any other diners in yet) and asked to be moved to a more private spot, as we were being sat literally in the middle of where all the waiters seem to congregate, in the walkway. This seemed to be really hard for the girl to get her head around, and although we moved it was like a massive issue. In an empty restaurant. None-the-less, the issues came with the food. The dont seem to have a concept for allergies here. We werent allowed the tasting menu unless we were both buying, and if we were then we had to share the mains etc, so it made no logical sense to do that. We were told there was a vegetarian tasting menu but we werent given the menu, just expected to remember what is substituted for what. So we went for the A'la carte. The potatoes were a mix of ok and blackened through, in my opinnion they were half rotten from the look of them. We were told by the waiter they had been put on coals with seabass on top (vegetarians and allergy sufferers beware this is not disclosed info), so I ignored it. Chicken came, it was like slicing into an apple. I dont think breast should feel that way to cut when tender. Seemed pink inside. Told the waiter I'd just leave it on the side because again I was told 'it is supposed to be that way'. The final straw was the third dish, the lamb chops were bleeding in the middle. At this point I deduced that the chef is rushing and trying to turn tables quickly. Not a problem if he could just make sure it isnt bleeding, I'll have it. Waiter takes it away... Owner / manager / head honcho returns with the dish in hand, having poked it around says its fine and trys to put it on the table. I had to pick it up, squeeze it and make it bleed. He still began arguing about it saying it isnt blood, its well done, and it is spices. Anyway, takes it away, and marches back, with the dish still in hand ready to put back on the table, behind the chef! At this point it seems theres some kind of intimdation going on, or someone is trying to force feed us food we arent happy with. The chef confirms that the chops are cooked medium rare! So everyone is a liar clearly who says what they need to say. Big man with the chops just wanted to force them down our throat otherwise he would have taken them away by now, so I got my date, stood up and walked out. We went round the corner to fat punditt. Ordered some chops, they were a bit pink for my liking, called the waiter and the owner was stood there and said no worries at all, if you dont like it pink let us cook them a bit more for your liking. We at the chops. Note to tamrind kitchen, that is how you serve a customer. You lost out on a £1-200 spend, because you wanted to force feed your guests and tried 3 times. I could have ignored how over priced they were if the service was worth it. So many good indian restaurants in london, with tasty food, and absolutely lovely staff, this is definitely NOT one of them.
