Classic restaurant in Central Park
While many New Yorkers regard this as the ultimate cliche restaurant, it is in fact really nice, with excellent food, friendly, if not fast service, and a nice atmosphere for chatting with friends. Not inexpensive, but not outrageous. We were really pleased.
Be the first to ReplyOkay food but loud and rowdy on a Saturday night
The food was okay. The view of the patio was nice. The service was fine. But….if you want a quiet, maybe even romantic, dinner, don’t go on a Saturday night. There were rowdy parties in the dining room, with lots of shouting, whooping and loud talking. Not quite a frat party but close.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible experience with Management
My niece was scheduled to sing at Carnegie Hall, so I thought a nice dinner before at Tavern on the Green for the whole family would be a great way to start the evening. I checked with all the family planning on attending, and came to a head count of 10 for the evening and made a reservation for 10 for 6PM just before the 8:30PM start time at Carnegie Hall. All good and no problems making the reservation (although it did require a credit card to make the reservation). My cousin called me 2 days before the date of the reservation asking if she could bring a date to the dinner, bringing our count up to 11, I checked online and it said it was too late to change the reservation online and I had to call to make changes. So the next day (the day before the reservation), I called and asked to change the reservation to 11. The person I spoke with said no problem and made the change, and I received email confirmation my reservation was changed to 11, told my cousin and she went ahead purchased a ticket to the concert for her date as well. The next day, literally 3 hours before our reservation time I got a call from Tavern on the Green saying whoever I spoke with made a mistake and should not have allowed me to change the reservation to 11 without changing our reservation to a "large party" reservation which required a formal signed contract, prix fixe menu, and a seating time of 5 or 8PM. I was told basically I could change the reservation back to 10 (what would I do with the extra person?) or I'd have to sign the contract (where would I get a fax machine/scanner) and change the reservation to 5pm (how can I convince 10 other people to show up an hour earlier) or 8pm (too late for the concert), and go with the prix fixe menu). I finally convinced the host to let us keep the 6pm start time and agreed to cancel the rest of our sightseeing plans for the afternoon, just so we could go sign a contract in person and go with the prix fixe menu. Literally the worst customer experience I've ever had with a restaurant. When it's your mistake (which it was since their host told me it was all set and no problem to increase to 11), you should just honor the reservation. Making me the bad guy and having to cancel all my plans to accommodate the restaurant by signing their contract (and remember they already had my credit card), is just terrible customer service. Since it was too late to find another restaurant, I agreed to all their terms, including the prix fixe menu. Overall, everyone agreed the filet mignon was just ok, not great, but the salmon was better, and of course we didn't have a choice to choose anything else except the vegetarian option. Management here needs to take a course in customer service. Sad since I really liked this restaurant, and one of the reasons I chose it for this special occasion for my niece's concert.

It was just lovely. The building and site is beautiful. The staff were friendly and warm. The food was delicious. My first time in NYC, and going to Tavern on the Green set the scene for a wonderful visit.
Be the first to ReplyEverything fits… until the end!
Everything fits perfectly, but the underemployed three guys at the entrance can't even call you a taxi after horrendous consumption!! I'll think three times about whether I'll come back - after 24 years as a guest - on my next trip to New York... :-(

Be the first to ReplyA must visit!
This was our second visit to Tavern on the Green and it did not disappoint! The first time was during the summer months when we could dine in the terrace however this time it was like stepping into a Christmas card. The restaurant and courtyard were decked out with beautiful trees and decorations. The service was first class with knowledge staff providing recommendations and alternative options for gluten free. During service staff never rushed or hurried and left time in between courses to enjoy the atmosphere within the restaurant! Food was fantastic! We will definitely be back! Another lovely surprise we discovered during the day was Tavern on the Green to Go which is located on the outside at the courtyard. There was a small seating area and we had some cocktails whilst enjoying the winter sun in Central Park.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing brunch with rude waiter
Went for brunch at noon on Sunday with spouse. Very loud and cramped seating at two top table. Waited until after our food arrived to get coffee and iced tea. Entrees were not served hot at appetizing temperature and coffee was barely warm. Waited for drink refills way too long. Self serving male waiter then complained to us when he was not given great tip. It was embarrassing since it should have been obvious to him that the whole meal was lackluster service. Our brunch was $130 for only two entrees and a basket of bread.

I always enjoy this space, the dining or the lounge. The dining side is a must at least once though. It's so bright and cheery with the window-side being a whole wall. The service was just ok, there were things added to our bill by mistake but the food was amazing. I had the salmon and lentils as usual and walked away quite happy and nourished. It's a good idea to make reservations though it isn't always needed.
Be the first to ReplyNice brunch but expensive for what you get
Expensive meal but we expected as much at this iconic location in Central Park. We had a great seat in the glass enclosure off the kitchen for our Sunday brunch. When we arrived at 11 for our reservation, the restaurant was filling up. When we left at 1230, it was packed. Seating in the bar is not recommended as many folks without reservations are placed there. Food was good but not out of this world. Overall, if you’ve never been, add to your list of a spot to check out and afterwards walk to entrance for a carriage ride around Central Park. But if you’ve already checked the box, no need to go back.
Be the first to ReplyDo not allow them to seat you in that cube corner on a sunny day!!!
The food is amazing! Hostess was nice and friendly. However we were sat in the hottest corner of the restaurant on a sunny day. We could not enjoy our meal because it was so freaking hot. They need to do something about this corner. I had to take my sweater off and wear my tank top. We were then visited by security since tank tops are not allowed. Then I get charged for two sodas, which is normally fine but there is no ice in the luke warm water they serve so I needed the iced soda to cool off. For over $300 to eat, one should never have to sit through that. Looking back we should have said no, and ate a hotdog from a stand, outside in the air. For how much they charge and for how busy it was, I think they could afford some shades. I've never been so uncomfortable at a meal in my life. But their was no where else to move us. Waiter (who's name I do not remember, but who's brother works in Arkansas) was not great. At this level I expect a real person, not some fake robot of a person. We were not impressed. He may work in NYC but there is no need to be stuck up. The rat we crossed paths with on the way in should have been our omen to go a different direction.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Brunch Place
Great place to start or end your time in Central Park. We went for brunch. We sat in one of the dining rooms however the glassed-in dining room looked bright & cherry on a gloomy day. The basket of pastries was a perfect sample of sweet bread, muffin, croissant & scone. My sister loved the frittata, although she wished there was more vegetables. I had the egg Benedict with lobster. Other than having to ask for more hollandaise sauce & the eggs were not runny (which I like) it was very good. It was the first time we had a lava cake filled with peanut butter, also very good. Service was attentive & friendly. Would definitely come here the next time I’m in the city.

Be the first to ReplyOnce a shining star but now in need of a face lift
This famous and once a shining star resturant was called an elevated cafeteria by one guests. Past experiences coupled with the rich history and convenient location made me select this establishment for my daughter’s birthday celebration. Entering the restaurant, the iconic revolving horses over the bar and the parquet titled floors that are making a comeback invoked feelings of nostalgia. The 1930’s music softly playing “dancing check to check” paired with the dated furnishings and decor made you feel like you were stepping back in time but unfortunately that is where the charm ended. If1930’s style dining is the goal, you expect the level of service to be fabulous and customers satisfaction a priority but that never happened on any level. The staff was clearly over worked and not properly trained. Food was bland and my daughter joked that perhaps the the chef needed to watch the food channel to be reminded the importance of seasoning. We did like the honey roasted figs but it should have been listed as a “fig” because only one fig cut into 4 pieces but the air cured beef added a nice touch. The Burrata ratios were very off with tons of cherry tomatoes and garlic at different stages of temperature like they were dumped from different cooking pans into one dish. The ravioli w/ smoked tomatoes was over cooked and falling apart but after having to add salt and pepper it wasn’t bad but my daughter commented it reminded her of Costco ravioli which made me cringe. The sirloin arrived at temperature as expected but the potatoes were cold and dry. The vegetable salad was tasty but it was more like a version of potato salad with lots root veggies diced into a dish. Once we had a bite of the slice of birthday cake, I was thankful they failed to get my birthday cake order via fax and saved me money. If you are going for nostalgia, you will be very happy but sadly from decor to the food it is dated and badly needing a facelift.
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunate memories
Due to an illness, we planned a wedding brunch in two weeks at this iconic place. My family had many happy celebrations in the past at this establishment. We signed their contract, agreed to everything they wanted to keep it simple. The day of.. they didn’t have our reservation for 36 people ready and we waited 45 min as they set up the table. Then they changed the layout, that they had insisted on, so speeches were not able to happen, and then told us our $1000 flowers hadn’t been delivered yet they were sitting in the delivery room w my name on it. In addition, there was no a/c and the sun beamed in the glass area that we had paid $1000 to use. No one from the restaurant offered congratulations for our nuptials, or, an apology for breaking every aspect of their contract.

We made reservations on Thurs for 12 people for Sat mid morning. Fri evening our reservation was cancelled. No reason just a text. So we made 3 different reservations - 3 different people (as it will not allow you to do 2 reservations from the same ip address) When we got there one reservation was seated upstairs - we get it . The other 2 were seated together at a large table. The wait staff was super nice and we had drinks in no time. After ordering food - We assume it was a manager (suit and a pony tail) came by and pretty much started yelling at us there are too many people and they charge a fee for set up and add gratuity ----after exchanging words with 2 of the men at the table he walked off. What just happened here? The wait staff was so on top of things and so nice. The angry pony tail man - not so much. Food was meigh - nothing outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced but food edible (ideal of dieters)
Staff friendly and attentive although, from my perspective it did appear they were somewhat supercilious at times. Food was okay (had much better steaks at half the cost of those here) but certainly good if on a diet since left and needed to get something to eat on route to hotel 25mins away. The attraction of the place/location is the only real thing in its favour I'd suggest. Sure the main issue is that the owners know they don't have to try too hard to ensure a steady stream of clients - not too sure how many of those would return given the cost/standard/quantity. Did feel like a production line with no time to relax with staff removing bottles/glasses as soon as near empty along with crockery which gave me the impression that this is normal i.e. get them in, half feed them and get them out as fast as possible.
Be the first to ReplyFine but Not Exceptional
My wife and I were visiting Manhattan in March 2022 for a trip deferred by COVID since 2020. Our goal was to see several Broadway shows. Because of the delay, the trip was now aligned with the month of our 35th anniversary, so we decided to do everything top-notch. Part of the top-notch experience was to enjoy fine dining, so we chose to have brunch at Tavern on the Green before our Sunday matinee presentation of “Come from Away”. The restaurant is legendary and we expected an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, while there was nothing wrong with the restaurant per se, it was not an uncategorical success. We were seated in the glass-enclosed Central Room rather than one of the more authentic and original rooms to the sides. The windows all around certainly let in plenty of light, but also captured and echoed the noise of all other diners in the room back to us, making for a noisy experience. The service was fine, and I received my mimosa and later a Bloody Mary without any issues. I ordered the steak and eggs from the brunch menu. The steak was a bit chewy. It also seemed the food had been prepared and then left under a heat lamp waiting for someone to order it, so it wasn’t as warm as I would expect. Based on the reputation, I expected to be blown away by brunch at Tavern on the Green. Instead, our experience was just OK and felt a bit like something just catered to pushing tourists through.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing visit
This was a bucket list item for me and what a disappointment. The service was the worst I've had in years. It was chaotic, staff was rude, dismissive, even aggressively so. For example, I asked one waitress for a spoon and she nodded, then went to the wait station and stood there for several minutes, had no intention of getting the spoon. The atmosphere was toxic. I asked for a lemon and received a glass with 12 lemons and limes? The water was spilled all over the table. Where was the maitre d' in all of this? Out in the garden, talking to the bartender. The food was delicious, more the pity that the rest of the experience was so terrible.

I love this restaurant and its tradition; nevertheless, this time there was a lack of staff to take care of the costumers. I know that this is part of all the post Covid consequences but I think that if the owner wants to keep the business running, a greater effort shall be made on terms of service and food quality. The service was very slow. Our waiter was really polite and gentle but he had too many tables to take care of. The food was good but not awesome. I felt disappointed this time. Also, the bartender, a girl, got upset because I “only” gave her a 15% of the total account as tip for serving us three ginger ales. She told me with a long face that “she also has to eat”. I did not like this experience as I adore it when dining there for Thanksgiving every year.
Be the first to ReplyNice little pit stop on a hot bike / walk (to go)
We needed a drink on a very hot day Cycling through Central Park. This place was the closest. We thought it was a formal sit down sort of place, but they had a ‘to go’ kiosk so we had a pleasant pit stop to get our breath back. Nice Weiss bar for me, iced coffee for my wife and a coke for my son.

This is an absolutely beautiful restaurant. The patio is beautifully lit up on a warm summer night which provides a soothing atmosphere. I ordered the ravioli plate and it was delicious. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was extremely attentive and helpful. I highly recommend this restaurant and I hope to return on my next visit to NYC.

We were very much looking forward to a special family dinner at Tavern on the Green. The setting is beautiful and their outside tables are perfect weather permitting. Their menu and wine list offers something for everyone. All of that said, we left disappointed. We were shuffled from one table to another (confusion with the reservation), service was unnecessarily slow, our meals were served cold, and their prices are high. Overall, not a great experience.

Iconic NYC restaurant in Central Park. Great location, ambiance, wait staff and menu. Outstanding food. Short walk into the park from the West side. Uber will drop you off and pick you up at the restaurant door. Will return. This was our 4th visit to the restaurant. This time we were a family group of 11 persons, and they accommodated us very nicely.
