A true hidden west village gem! Cozy old school vibes.
The food and drinks were amazing but our bartender Emmanuel was the star of the night! Great service and cocktail recommendations. Thank you Eman!
Be the first to ReplyI came to the commerce Inn for brunch today.
I had the patty melt, which was absolutely outstanding. Probably the best I've ever had. The service was great. The ambience was wonderful. I understand. It's a different vibe during the evening. However, I don't know what vibe there could possibly be that could eclipse what I experience today.

Perfect cocktails, every dish was outstanding~ butternut squash appetizer, roast chicken, grilled fish, noodles. Service was very attentive and efficient. I was so excited to learn that a new Shaker-inspired restaurant had opened and it exceeded my expectations!

Down to the precise location, the Commerce Inn is West Village perfection. The concept is fringy and (hopefully) off-putting to some, but as the son of someone who actually grew up eating some iteration of these dishes, I could appreciate the Commerce Inn deeply. I enjoyed the spoon bread, beef, and beans. However, it's quite difficult to explain to my father why I can't get a reservation before 10pm.

I always walk by this restaurant and finally got a chance to try it out. It has a very cozy west village vibe, with candles on each table. The food was also quite delicious, especially the tomato toast! I would recommend this place for an intimate date or for a small group.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful restaurant with a sceney vibe.
The food is good but what we weren't prepared for was how large the portions are. I would definitely recommend sharing dishes. The large portions do make up a bit for the relatively high prices.

Sat at the bar here last night and had some of the best clam chowder of my life. The patty melt was amazing too. Amazing service and cocktails from the bartenders. The ambiance is so cozy too. Highly recommend!

This place has grown on me -- maybe more than any other NY restaurant ever. Had a fabulous dinner here tonight. We split oysters three ways -- raw pickled, and fried, and they were all great. I especially loved the fried, which were served piping hot, in the shell, over a slick of tartar sauce and next to a wedge of lemon. It was excellent. We then shared their poached leeks (always great) and buttermilk salad (simple and perfect), and then for our mains shared the roasted duck, which came with cubes of roasted celeriac, and sides of poached quince and creamed spinach. I'm not a duck fan, but loved the sides -- and my friends who love duck loved this. Then we split a wonderful roasted whole sea bass that was filleted and topped with a bright slaw of lightly cured thinly sliced fennel and thin slices of fried potato. It was PERFECT. For dessert: a nice (but slightly too sweet, Im glad we split this) raspberry Eton Mess type thing. All in all, I love the service here, the vibe, and the food. This is officially one of my faves in the city.

While the place is not spacious, it has a vibe. Cute place. Food was amazing! Definitely want to try other menu next time.

Usually a go to place for drinks but will think twice next time. Our bartender could not have been ruder. For $75.00 for 4 drinks and a lot of attitude it's not worth the trip.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is everything you want it to be.
The cocktails are great, but I recently stayed for dinner as well and the portions, quality, value, service, and décor were all great. They do a nice job of letting you pick you protein, veg, and starch to mix and match at the table or customize your meal instead of having people have to ask for substitutions. Our server was great. We had drinks with friends in the bar prior and were a little past our reservation when we came over, but they were warm and accommodating. I look forward to going back already.
Be the first to ReplyLoved everything about this.
Follow the advice of your waiter on what to order - they're super well informed and obviously want the guest to have a great meal. If it's a cold night, don't miss the hot toddy. And the beef will knock you out - made me question why I ever toyed with quitting red meat!
Be the first to ReplyUnique menu unlike any I've experienced.
The food is wonderful, the vibe is relaxed, the service is excellent, the staff is attentive and well-informed, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyFood was good.
However, this is the true definition of an upscale "pub". Very limited menu. Not much to choose from. Entrées are between $30-$70. Appetizers range in the 20s. Atmosphere is wonderful, cozy, yet not crowded. The service was OK, They did not fill my water glass once. Checked on the table maybe twice!?!? Didn't give us bread or anything to snack on to start with. Didn't try to upsell, but didn't pay attention to us when we did not order a bottle of wine. I had the trout it was tasty, yet not the most outstanding fish I've ever had. The tables around us mostly mostly shares -- the steak, as that's the best option if you're not trying to spend $300 for an appetizer and entrée and one glass of wine for two.

Was excited to try this spot in my neighborhood and it was NOT what I was expecting (idk what I was even expecting, but clearly I didn't fully grasp the whole "Shaker" thing at first). So let's start there - it's "Shaker-inspired", and if you're as confused as I was about what that meant, there are three Shakers left living at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine. They rarely if ever venture into Manhattan to have a look around the latest hot spots LOL. The interior looks like it's jumped back to an earlier century of Americana (think: Amish vibes). The menu is short with some crazy font (probably my favorite part along with the fact that they had Aesop soap in the bathrooms (kinda funny/ironic, but I'm here for it). Order the cornbread and they bring a big pan of it out and give you a scoop. I was confused by this, haha, like that's all we get for $9? We ordered more but forgot to check if they charged us twice.Lastly, we made reservations online and there was only ONE time slot available, so we walked there to see if they could seat us beforehand and it was literally empty. My friend said it best - that it's like "manufactured demand".TLDR - it's worth going if you're interested in something different, but I won't be making it one of my usual spots. But props to the owners for trying something unique.

You'll likely enjoy your experience at The Commerce Inn, but you'll enjoy it even more if you're curious about how Americans used to fill their plates in the early 1900s -- or, more specifically, how Americans living in Shaker religious communities in the Northeast used to eat. That's a very niche concept for sure, but as a person who recently became very interested in finding and trying out the favorite recipes of past presidents, I definitely found it to be up my alley. That's not to say that there aren't drawbacks and limitations to cooking with heritage recipes. We chose an appetizer, a vegetable, and a main dish from the menu, and the results varied. The "buttermilk" is literally just lettuce in buttermilk dressing, and it's very good, but could it not have had a few more ingredients for $18? If this were a different sort of restaurant, this would be verging on "deconstructed salad" territory without the rest of the deconstructed bits. But what do I know, maybe the Shakers didn't eat their buttermilk lettuce with anything else! And therein lies the conundrum. I haven't had much rarebit in my life, but you don't have to tell me twice to order melty cheese on toast if that's an option. It was definitely good, kind of a sharp, saltier cheddar cheese melted (and then congealed) against a soft, toasted bread. The half roast chicken with "fry'd potatoes" was the standout dish of the night. The chicken is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside - it tasted to me as if it had been brined - and prepared with delicious herbs. It was a simple preparation, and I loved it. I also tried the West Village Sour, a slight twist on a New York Sour with mulled wine in place of the red wine and simple syrup. It was a little sweet, in a good way, and a nice way to fully winterize a whiskey sour. 3.5 stars rounded up.
Be the first to ReplyI had high expectations given the owner and at least some
I had high expectations given the owner and at least some of the reviews. It was underwhelming. Understandably prices are not cheap which would be fine if the quality was better, but I'd rate the food as a C Plus. The most interesting and well executed thing was the room itself, yes the chairs are small but that's part of the attempted really old school charm. I really like what they are trying to do, but menu is rather short as well and nothing really stood out.And when the check came when paying with credit card the default and order suggested tip is 22 percent which is pretentious especially considering service was not great, and that includes water glasses not being refilled. It was also hard to find a bottle of wine that wasn't approaching 100 dollars.A great concept but they have to execute better or they will wind up in the scrap heap of restaurants that have occupied that space once the novelty wears off. My suggestion is to wait and see if they get better.

My menu:Cod cakes - no surprises, but a standard dish done well.Squash - delicious. Had an earthy, almost woodsy flavor. Not too sweet. Very complex.Spoon bread - rich, but light. Went well with everything Pork - a powerhouse. A lot of robust flavors and plenty of fat. Cooked perfectly to maintain the moist quality.I had a Jet Pilot Milk Punch which I found syrupy. The waiter was kind enough to exchange it for a dry cider, which complimented the meal nicely.

The pictures of the inside of this place don't look very good? But when you get there it's super pretty/cozy in person. Food, drinks, and service are great. We had a reservation and we're seated immediately. I'd definitely come back to this cute little place.

I came here on a first date last night, unfortunately I was drunk after hanging with my friends all day, so don't remember everything but was generally a huge fan of this place. It's a really cool location with a great ambiance. The food is amazing. We had a salad, some steak, and two other dishes that I can't remember. Fwiw I did hold it together, my date wrote me this today: "Most interesting first date in a while - how's your hangover? ". I'm in, got another chance

Be the first to ReplyI loved it then, and I love it now.
Jody and Rita know how to do cocktails....we love the regulars Jeanie and Sid (from Buvette)....and the best martini around.Food is solid, if a bit odd.....think 1700's British or American tavern, with only domestic wines btw (no French or Italians). It's our 4:00 drink destination, and the cod fritters are yum.I do miss the old days and that coconut birthday cake and that gorgeous mural. Everything changes. xo

Popped in for a pre-Theatre drink, the place was packed and buzzy. Loved the ode to colonial past with the tavern like atmosphere. Food looked delicious and will have to return to give it a try. We stood at the bar which has an extensive list of drinks and wines. Beer is a bit limited, but there's something for everyone. Service was quick.

The Commerce Inn has the most classic, homey vibe, like a perfect warm hundred-year-old bed & breakfast. If someone were churning butter in the corner, it honestly wouldn't be out of place.Written in an endearingly horrible old-timey font, the menu seems full of winners. We started with the brussels sprouts and spoon bread (both great) and my mom absolutely lost her mind over the pickled oysters. Next, we got the chicken and pork ribs, both of which were delicious and masterfully made--I can't think of a better way to phrase it than that, masterful, because they were both so good they made me aware of how much skill went into the preparation of each dish. I would do unspeakable things for the chicken here.I'll be frank: I could probably eat five of the apple crumbles in a row. I would not regret it, and I might ask for a sixth.I highly, highly recommend this place. It's got an inviting atmosphere, incredible service (everyone was so nice and attentive), and--most importantly--amazing food.

This is a super cute place in west village, a perfect pre drink/meal place if you are going to the theater next door too. This building dated back to 1900 very cozy and colonial feel. There's an interesting menu definitely will come back to try. The drinks are on a pricy side. $19 a cocktail.
