The French House London Reviews from The Last Year
An eexceptional restaurant
A small restaurant above the pub. Excellent food, in a pleasant, quiet atmosphere and friendly staff. Menu changes daily, with some interesting dishes.
Highlight of the Weekend!
Superb lunch and afternoon in The French House. Excellent sélection of starters and main courses accompanied by exquisite aperitifs and digestifs. Plumb brandy was exhilarating. All delightfully served by Suzanne and Maxi. Honoured by Neil’s personal attention and special mention for chef Paul who guided us through each of our gastronomic selections. An establishment steeped in history and an historic day for us. Thanks so much guys.
Excellence on all fronts.
Truly excellent cooking married with an efficient and effortlessly competent front of house. To drink, we had aperitifs and a reasonably priced bottle of Pomerol, followed by a couple of glasses of Sauternes. To eat, my wife had a roast scallop (“delicious!”) and I had a slab of ox tongue with cress and horseradish which is possibly the most delicious way I’ve had this cooked: quite dense meat, really beefy flavour and utterly delicious. For mains, we had a spatchcocked quail and pork cheeks - both really well cooked. For pudding, we had a Paris-Brest. The service was attentive without being intrusive. All reasonably priced and a memorable dinner well worth the effort of waiting for a table (owing to its popularity, we had to book some time in advance) in a small, simple dining room. Fantastic!
expensive ribeye and it was quite stringy, so rather glad we shared!
Bit of a curates egg this place but still love it, very expensive ribeye not of the best quality so cant understand the price, fish also way over £40 so we have decided to share plates from now on as we have history here
A Classic What a memorable experience.
Be sure to reserve well in advance. Food, wine and service all excellent. Though Servers are casually dressed they are pros. Nudge your way through the downstairs' crowd to the staircase. Once upstairs it's a another world
Amazing, definitely to be repeated
Fantastic food with impeccable service. Ghenta & Leo were amazing, perfect blend of funny, friendly & professional. Neil brought out the madeleines which freshly baked were one of the best desserts either of us have ever had. We are already planning our next visit, can’t wait!
Superb, memorable meal and not at rip-off prices
Superb. French cuisine at its very best. Subtle, complex, well-balanced flavours. Cannot recall a meal in London as good as this in twenty years. La Trompette at its best, maybe. Neil Borthwick is a very fine chef (and on a cold, dark Wednesday evening was in the kitchen not leaving it to others). Warm welcome from cheery, knowledgeable staff who take great pride in the sheer quality of what they are serving. I doubt an interior designer has been near, but who cares? The napery is spotless and the food memorable (and not ridiculously pricey). Delicious chicory-based salad (and I find salads boring usually) and a gorgeous duck breast (for two) linger in the memory.
Never again!
I have been to this popular but small Soho restaurant a number of times in recent years but today's visit has made me vow never to go there again. The food was good the wine was quaffable but expensive at £45 a bottle. However we were asked to move tables after our main course to let a threesome sit down and offered another table plus a glass of Calvados each as a sweetener. We agreed and were still eating our pudding when the waitress arrived with the bill and asked us to pay up and leave (nicely) as a couple were waiting by the door for our table!! We remonstrated that we had accommodated their needs and had not finished eating yet but another waitress accused us of rudeness by objecting to their demands!! We had exceeded their two hour limit by 15 minutes but all restaurants in London have this limit and yet I have never in 30 years been asked to leave my table especially in such circumstances. Life is too short to be harassed by rude waiting staff especially when you are paying £170 for two including tip (yes we did leave a tip, God knows why!!)
Don't keep this one a secret!
Please keep this place a secret so I can get a table next time I need one! And that will be very soon! This spot is that very rare thing in London these days - unassuming, skilled and lovely staff, proper plates of food not dinky sharing rip-offs! Short and special menu, unashamedly serving meat and of course other things. Magret was stunning and the American football of luscious chocolate mousse restarted my stalled relationship with chocolate mousse! Oops. Forgot the perfect Irish rock oysters! Thank You Neil and staff! Rx
One of Londons Best Steaks.
Upon many recommendations, it was finally time to try out the upstairs restaurant at this great pub. It did not disappoint!
Enjoyed our first visit to an iconic eaterie
First visit to the French House and enjoyed it immensely. Cosy dining room, friendly, knowledgeable and effective service, thankfully short and reasonably priced wine list, classical French food, cooked really nicely. We had scallops, goats cheese curd with a baked garlic on sourdough and shared the duck with fois gras with aligot and greens. Followed be cheese and crumble supported by Poire William, Port and coffee. Would have been a 5 but the meat main course had sold out (at 6.30) so the only choice we has was both having monkfish or the shared duck (at a rather steep £95).
I feel like most of the reviews are for the bar, which is
I feel like most of the reviews are for the bar, which is always packed after 5pm, but this review is specifically for the restaurant upstairs. It is resi only, exceptional. 8 tables, mainly 2 tops, and a handwritten menu each night. The chef only uses fresh ingredients from that day's market, and you can taste it in every bite. The menu had 2 apps, 2 mains, 4 sides, and 2 deserts. The Madeline's were to die for. Service was outstanding.
one of the most unpleasant dining experiences.
.. overpriced, no variety on the menu , other than three types of pate and incredibly unpleasant staff who stronghold you into a 12 percent tip. steer clear.
Fine for a drink, but skip the restaurant.
Very limited menu, overpriced food and unpleasant staff who push for service charge to be added though service is in fact poor.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
