The Kitchen American Bistro Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Terrible service.
Bartenders were rude and unwelcoming. At dinner, our server was kind but we could tell he was swamped with other tables. Our food was forgotten, drinks took 30+ min, and our appetizer came last after our entrees. They did comp my meal, however, it was a HOT MESS to say the least. The price is not worth it, so save your money and go somewhere else! Will not be returning.
Observed hostess being rude and snotty to walk in guests.
Her attitude was completely unacceptable and would turn me off of ever wanting to dine at the establishment. Not a good look for front of the house and first impressions to patrons.
Great Location, Food & Service !
My wife and I had dinner here upon the recommendation of a friend. We're so glad we decided to take her recommendation, it was our first visit to Chicago. The restaurant is located along the edge of the river in the downtown core. We were seated at a window table, and although we couldn't see the boat traffic going by on the river, we still enjoyed a nice view of a nearby bridge and several of the interesting buildings in this truly amazing city. Outdoor seating with a great view of the river is also available if the weather cooperates. I'm a rum drinker, and they had a very good selection of highly rated rums on the cocktail menu. Several wines were available by the glass, keeping my better half happy! And the food...oh my, the food. The menu is full of fantastical fusions of a wide variety of things, with a great selection of gluten-free and vegan options. We ordered 4 things – the Focaccia bread, Lamb Arrayas to share, the Pappardelle, and the Tagliatelle. The Focaccia was wonderful, a bit crusty on the outside, but nice and moist inside with just the right amount of olives so it wasn't overwhelmed with olive flavour. Lamb Arrayas are some ground lamb meat, fried and stuffed into a pita, then fried again, and served with sour cream and fresh dill. 4 of them come with one order, and that's plenty of appetizer for sharing between 2. It would even be a tasty appetizer to share amongst 4. Very flavourful...a great start to the meal. My Pappardelle was essentially a pasta & rabbit stew. It was delicious and plentiful. Too many American restaurants have a habit of serving huge portions. Not here, they're just right. The Pappardelle had a nice mix of shredded rabbit, root vegetables like carrots and turnip, and was topped with the most amazing crispy sage leaves. Our server Auburn, who did a wonderful job, explained how the chef got them to that crispy stage...they really added to the flavourful taste of the dish overall. My wife's Tagliatelle was also delicious. She described it as mildly spicy, with a very tasty bolognese sauce, and the pasta was done just right. And dessert? When Auburn brought the dessert menu, she described the first item on the menu, the Mousse Dome. We didn't give her a chance to get to the 2nd item because the Mousse Dome sounded like a heavenly dessert. And it most certainly was. Our eyeballs bulged out when we saw it, and we polished it off so fast I forgot to take a picture of it! Don't even ask, just order it. It's easily enough to share for 2. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone. It isn't too expensive, so I believe it provides great value for your dining dollar. It would be pretty noisy if it was full of patrons, but the food would be worth it. Auburn, thanks for the wonderful service. And thanks to the chef and staff for a wonderful meal.
The layout is big and open, light and airy.
You can see the river. The food and drinks were great. Justin provided the best service. Our only regret is not trying this restaurant sooner.
Decent food and drinks but awesome location and river views
Decent food and drinks but awesome location and river views if you sit at the bar seats on the patio.
I loved the outdoor seating by the river.
Try to book ahead of time to reserve the outdoor seating. I got lucky when I went and was able to sit outside after waiting for 10 minutes. The food was really good. I went with my friend and will be bringing my husband next time!
I had heard good things before coming here and was a little
I had heard good things before coming here and was a little disappointed. It wasn't busy for a Sunday (Cinco de Mayo), and plenty of servers on. The food was decent, but the "Black Caesar" was too salty and barely any dressing. The fried chicken sandwich was good, not too big and simple. The burrata might have been the best dish of all items we ordered. Our server kept forgetting about us leaving us with no water most of the time and no clean silverware after appetizers and she didn't look happy to be there. The restaurant itself was beautiful and a great setup, may try again but doubt it with all the other options around the area.

The Kitchen was recommended to me by a friend and, after looking at the menu and pictures of the restaurant online, I was excited to go. But I am sorry to say I was SO disappointed in my experience. I dined at the bar which was tended by the most lackadaisical bartender. I barely saw them and when I did they were not very friendly or welcoming. The burrata was yummy but the rest of the food was a major let down, especially given the price point. I also had to hunt down my own silverware. The cocktail was pretty good. It took nearly 15 minutes to get the check after asking for it. The bar area was surrounded by high top tables, half of which went unbussed and dirty for the majority of my time there. In a city full of incredible cuisine, I will not be making a return visit to the Kitchen.

Went here today for the first time ever for happy hour with my boyfriend. We called 10 mins before to ensure we could get a seat outside by the river. It was such a beautiful day out and all other restaurants by the river were booked so we figured it would be best to call before we made the 12 min walk there. As we walked in, the hostess was super sweet and quick to greet us when we got there. There was probably a total of 10 customers max at the restaurant at about 4pm on a beautiful 75 degree weather day in Chicago. We got seated on the spot and got our first round of drinks/food within the first 15 mins. Food was absolutely amazing as our server had recommended. After about 30 mins, the server never came back to check on us. He finally came back to let us know he will be done for the day and they will be switching servers. We attempted to order drinks with him before he headed out and he told us he couldn't take our order and that he will send the server replacing him. 15 mins later, nothing. 25 mins still nothing. Finally one of the hosts walks by and we had to flag him down to please help us find our server. He stated he will make sure they come to check on us and meanwhile he will work on getting our drinks. 15 mins later...no sign of him, our drinks or any servers. At that point we were getting ready to just ask for the check and leave. There was a couple next to us that was also joking with us about how they ordered drinks 20 mins ago and they were probably back there making the wine from scratch in the back. Finally a nice young lady who wasn't even assigned to us (i wish I got her name) walks behind us as a whole other customer stops her to let her know she has been there for 15 mins and that no one has greeted her or even given her water. She kindly took her order and caught us looking at her and stopped to ask if we were okay. Told her we were waiting for our drinks and she said she would go check on it. You could tell she was absolutely fed up with the lack of her coworkers helping her out there. 10 mins later she comes out with just my boyfriends drink and tells me it's going to be a few more mins for my one glass of wine and continued to apologize to us knowing it was not her doing. We told her we understood because all 5 of us sitting there noticed the lack of help she was getting. As soon as she brought my glass of wine we asked for the check and couldn't wait to get out of there. Ofcourse then my boyfriend decides it's a great time to pay with cash and yep...guess how much longer we had to wait to get the change back? We ended up leaving that place at almost 7pm. Seems to me like patio season caught them by surprise or something on the 2nd week of beautiful 70+ degree weather in Chicago? Because holy!! I will not be coming back here. Shout out to that superstar server that was working the patio basically all by herself today at about 5pm-7pm while we were there. She's the only reason this place got 3 stars. Oh, and the carrots course!
Went her for drinks and apps.
Waiter asked if there was any allergies(which is always appreciated) and we let him know that there was a sesame allergy. We ordered the burrata and he told us he would double check with the kitchen about the allergy. He came back and let us know we were all good. Then after consuming the burrata I started to feel a reaction and looked closer to find that there were sesame seeds on the burrata. I'm not sure if there was a miscommunication with the kitchen but was extremely frustrated. Ended up having to end my night early due to this reaction. Didn't say anything at the time because I didn't want to make a scene. But if you are going to ask about an allergy and tell the customer the dish does not contain sesame please make sure you are correct! Allergies should be taken seriously and paid close attention to.
I sat outside with a friend and the service started out
I sat outside with a friend and the service started out awesome with our server Eddie. Eddie was so kind and welcoming & made sure we got a great view of the river. Unfortunately, the service took a dive after that. I had the Bartenders choice (it was a moscow mule today) & my friend had the aperol spritz. We liked our drinks but could not get a second one for the life of us, so after about an hour we gave up and left. Great views, good drinks, hit or miss service- I'd honestly go back again simply because the views were so great!

This was a beautiful place to eat walking distance from lots of hotels in the area. You walk along the river. They have big beautiful windows. They have a coat check, nice for those heavy winter coats. Food service was also great and nicely paced. We just got (many) small plates, most of the vegetarian options since we had recently had a lot of meat. They were so good. IMO it can be hard to find places that serve great vegetables that are not trying to be meat and are not just breaded and deep fried (because of course veggies are great deep fried). I remember carrots, broccolini, beets, cauliflower--all wonderful. The crab fried rice was mediocre but not bad, just not elevated to the same level. The big disappointment was dessert. We had a mousse dome and some meringue thing. They sounded great and looked beautiful but weren't enjoyable to eat. The meringue thing didn't have much flavor and the dome was waxy. Would go elsewhere for dessert.

Had the most wonderful meal and dining experience here! The service was so on point, without being intrusive. The food was across the board absolutely lovely. We enjoyed this meal while overlooking the Chicago River, which added so much to the already well-appointed, comfortable ambience of the restaurant! Highly recommend this place to everyone!

So, funny story, I booked a reservation here on what I thought was St. Patrick's Day (Saturday celebration) and ended up being the ACTUAL St. Patrick's Day. I didn't plan to go back into River North after the shenanigans of St. Paddy's Day, but there's a booking fee if you cancel, so I came. I had a delightful brunch here! Great atmosphere. Good view of the river. Seating was not the most comfortable thing of my life, but that's literally my only complaint (and quite minor). I'd come back!

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!! I understand that my friends and I attended this restaurant on an extremely busy time but the blatant disrespect, unprofessional manner this place conducted themselves is absolutely baffling. First off they ran out of a menu item which we understood and then had to pick other food options. They had mentioned they aren't doing modifications because it was so busy but are willing to accommodate allergies. My friend DOES NOT eat pork or red meat and asked to have the bacon removed off the breakfast sandwich. Our waitress said pick something else and they cannot do that. Mind you we did not ask for substitutions or modifications but asked to not have something on the food item due to food sensitivity. After she asked us to choose something else she then proceeds to say "any other allergies other than the one?" so she could recognize there were allergies and would not accommodate that? Absolutely disgusting service and extremely disrespectful to their own paying customers.

Very cute inside but I went for brunch and it was just kind of middle of the road. I would maybe come again for dinner if I really wanted to be on the water
Service wasn't well.
Waited over 30minutes for simple mimosas. Out of multiple food items when we wanted to order. DO NOT RECOMMEND coming here. I understand they are high volume establishments, but plan ahead of these things to accommodate your customers.
The best dining experience of my life is thanks to Andrew
The best dining experience of my life is thanks to Andrew and Josh at The Kitchen. The food itself is 12/10 but no dining experience is complete without its service. Andrew felt like family from the moment we arrived and gave us the most incredible atmosphere for our meal. His recommendations were spot on but beyond that he was patient, friendly, professional, and made the meal that much better. We would return for his service alone. Josh as well, who continuously checked in on us and supplied us with food we will talk about for weeks to come. Both of these kind men deserve raises, promotions and a lifetime of good luck.
Been meaning to dine here for a while so Valentine's Day it
Been meaning to dine here for a while so Valentine's Day it was....the hostess was kind enough to seat us by the window with a view upon request. The ambiance is trendy, drinks are expensive but good and food is mediocre. We really liked lamb sausage in pastry puffs with greek yogurt on the bottom. We liked it so much that we placed a second order , the crab fried was very dry and crunchy? chicken was moist but lacked flavor, the sashimi salmon with egg yolk on the bottom was tasty but needs an adventurous eater. The desserts were ok, our server brought out a complimentary peanut butter chocolate mousse which was delicious and our order of Pavlova which was a huge disappointment. Overall the experience was definitely underwhelming.
Chill Space, Good Food & Service
We went for Chicago Restaurant Week and had a four course meal for $59. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and professional. The food was excellent. Our only regret is that we didn't order bread to sop up the extra sauce from our dishes. It was a shame to leave something that good on the plate.
Solid brunch place. Good for large groups as well. Service is top notch!
Had brunch with a dozen of my wife’s coworkers. The location is ideal and overlooks the river. The service is great and our server nailed everyone’s orders correctly. Brunch menu is fairly small but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We loved the breakfast potatoes. I had the Turkish eggs and my wife had the Benedict. Both were great
Great view, solid lunch
Gorgeous spot on the river. Get a table by the window. We visited when it was too cold to sit outside. Had the halloumi naan which was fabulous, the fried chicken sandwich was nothing special. Nice ambience.
Eat outside overlooking the river if the weather is nice
Weekday lunch outside overlooking the river, what could be better? We had the halal cart chicken and the fried chicken sandwich, both were nice and the service was friendly.
A nice summer evening dinner along Chicago River
We spontaneously stepped in on a Sunday night and enjoyed a delicious mix of plates to share, along with a nice bottle of wine. Definitely one of the very good places we have been overseas for dinner during our travel in US and Canada. Sitting on the terrasse, we had a nice view and mostly quite dinner (a few lowder boats passing by) close to the Chicago River! Hostess+Waitress very welcoming and friendly 😊 Absolutely delicious goat cheese cake!
Excellent brunch
We stopped for Sunday brunch. Even though we hadn't booked, we were seated after waiting half an hour. Well-kept place with excellent views of the river. Unfortunately, as it was a rainy day, only the internal spaces were usable. Average prices in Chicago with smaller portions than in the USA. Good choice on the menu between sweet and savory. Good selection there cocktails. Helpful staff
Must go!! Excellent restaurant
Excellent food, place, view, and staff!!! Food was incredible, tasteful, perfectly and carefully prepared. Staff was so polite, careful and attentive!! The ambiance is amazing and with lots of seating options and a wonderful view to the lake!!
Decent chicken halal sandwich for lunch
The Kitchen Bistro had a decent chicken halal sandwich for lunch, with an interesting mixture of vegetables and spices added to the grilled chicken. The tomato soup & chocolate chunk cookie were also good. The views of the river traffic were also enjoyable.
Great spot on the river
My first time here and really enjoyed it. Loved the atmosphere and the food was good. Will be back my next time in Chicago.
