🤮 1/5 - After picking up a very good deal with Expedia for just

After picking up a very good deal with Expedia for just £79 per night using "secret prices" on the website, I decided to stay at The Midland hotel, an old and historic hotel in the heart of city on Peter Street, being close to Manchester Central, former train station now a convention centre, it is also close to the city centre by walking distance, or the St Peter's Square Metrolink Station which is basically right next to the hotel. The Midland has changed hands so many times since it was built in 1903, most recently switching from QHotels to Leonardo Royal, it has even been a Crowne Plaza, and has a great deal of history, to the fact it even warrants a Wikipedia page. It is a grand hotel, it is a stunning building in the city centre but as a hotel, it is barely average and the decor inside the rooms resembles something one would find on Gordon Ramsay's hotel hell with an awful colour scheme which was basically a vomit green/brown.Having stayed at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate for the few nights previous and moving here to try out The Midland while they were doing a very good offer, prices generally peak at close to double that on normal nights, was just a huge downgrade it was like when Leicester City hired Craig Shakespeare to replace manager Claudio Ranieri who won them the league.Check-in at the hotel didn't go too smoothly, it took far too long in my opinion to then be handed by the tangible key, which included an issue in booking breakfast - I rather wish I didn't book it at all now after a dreadful experience (see seperate review for Mr Cooper's) - £13 per person for guests or £20 if you don't book with reception for an awful breakfast. From entering the hotel, it did feel quite grand and luxury which you can tell from the lobby and reception area, where there are reception and concierge and outside the hotel, with it being an old building, but as I got into my room I was really shocked, the room seemed basic and far from luxury, and even had a broken headboard meaning every time I'd reach back, it would make a large and uncomfortable bang. I did manage to change rooms, the next room was only slightly better and still had many flaws I will mention, even down to the size of the bed which was really small for a hotel, the bed & pillows were hard and uncomfortable, causing me to struggle to relax and then sleep. The hotel staff seemed friendly, such as maintenance man Dave who I had a quick chat too as he helped explain the confusing air conditioning and the television, which was another problem with the room. The air condition and heating in the room are very ineffective and noisy. I had to ask for a radiator because the room was so cold - also a bad sign probably down to the size of the building. Even the combination of both couldn't heat up the room, on a cold wintery January evening to the point I had to wear a thick jacket to sleep, which I wouldn't normally - there were no blankets either, leaving me to suffer in the freezing room. Disappointing! The television, on the other hand, had a confusing setup, it showed a range of channels and had basic UK Freeview, but it also listed channels (which couldn't be played obviously) which weren't available such as Sky Sports 1 and 3, which I was told the hotel cut so they would not have to pay for it anymore, and even now defunct channels such as Pricedrop, for me this shown laziness in failure to update the television, as this channel has been defunct since April 2014, which is nearly five-years. 5 years without an update and making sure everything is running smoothly is just shockingly poor.Plug sockets around the room were minimal, once again probably down to the size of the building with most of them being built inside the desk, which is probably the only part of the room I actually liked.I was told the mini bar in the fridge was no longer in use which is why it was locked, once again another confusing policy as the mini bar takes up space, they did later bring a fridge up but the fridge just looked old and bashed in. which also was how I'd describe the radiator they had to bring up as the rooms didn't have any - I can only presume they are making the temperature the only reason the rooms aren't like Hell. This is a grand hotel, but the rooms are ugly, basic and freezing cold in most regards, with ugly plain walls and a small television, I can't help but feel they are spending more time, money and space of the hotel in the main areas including the spa, lobby and corridors, and that means they're simply forgetting about a room. The main thing about a hotel is that the rooms are nice, comfortable and can deliver a good nights sleep - none of those applies here, so I sadly feel The Midland Manchester deserves a single one-star rating, especially down to the point where if my house would have been in a condition where I could have stayed there (it isn't due to renovations), I would have much preferred to go home.
