Mediocre dining experience
We visited The Plough on two consecutive nights on the basis of reviews and because we could walk from where we were staying in Kelmscott. Neither experience was great. First night we both made the mistake of having the Double Gloucester cheese soufflé. Let's just say this was not what we expected a cheese soufflé to be. It was more like a steamed pudding in a bowl of cheese sauce with grilled cheese on top! Neither of us could finish it and it gave my wife such bad indigestion that she couldn't eat any of her rather greasy chicken escalope main course. Avoid at all costs. The second night we both opted for the steak frites. This was passable but the meat had obviously been standing for a while as the beure café de paris on top was not melting, it was so cold. We were hungry so couldn't be bothered to send it back but we did query it as the plates were being cleared. The message came back from the kitchen that "there had been no delay". But that just sums the place up. The waiting staff had no idea what they were doing and took an age to do anything. We ordered sparkling wine as an aperitif (once I had found the wine list for myself!) and this was left for several minutes where we could see it going flat before anyone bothered to bring it to the table. We ordered wine to go with the mains and we had to ask for it again as we were at risk of finishing eating before it arrived! To summarise, set your expectations low and you might have a nice time - and avoid the cheese soufflé.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Pub with rooms
Visited this pub for a couple of nights in February, the food was fresh and home cooked, serving staff very friendly and attentive and the rooms recently refurbished and to a very nice standard! A really great find, and looking forward to trying their beer garden in the summer
Be the first to ReplyBest pub ever
I spent a couple of nights at The Plough. This is, singularly, my favourite pub / place to stay in the world. Great food. Great rooms. Great location. Great people running it.
Be the first to ReplyA perfect stay
Great base for walking a few miles of the Thames Path - even if it was flooded at the time (the river that is, not the pub) - and spending a day in Oxford. Although nearby Kelmscott Manor is closed in February, we will be back for a visit. The Plough Inn is a beautiful 17th century pub with excellent food and with comfortable, recently modernised bedrooms and en suite bathrooms. As a veteran of many UK B&Bs this is undoubtedly one of the best.

The location and style of this country inn are wonderful. The service was also good. However, the food was very mediocre and disappointing. We both had Sunday Roasts and the ingredients were fine, but it was clear that everything had been prepared well before service as all the vegetables were greasy, overcooked and dried out. I suspect that they had been plated for at least an hour and then left on a hot plate. Such a shame! Also, why do pubs insist on serving Yorkshire Puddings with every type of meat? To my mind, it should only accompany beef and not be so large that the rest of the food is completely hidden.
Be the first to ReplyDog friendly & welcoming pub!
Myself & my husband visited whilst staying on holiday nearby. When we arrived it was quiet but so welcoming! The fire was lit & we had the restaurant area to ourselves which was beautiful to be able to sit and chat. We had 2 courses & shared a pudding as the portion sizes were great we were unable to finish a pudding each. The food was so tasty & great value for money. We loved the friendly feel of the place & it was a bonus that it was dog friendly. If we had found this gem sooner in our break we would have gone back again! Really do recommend The Plough Inn!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meal in a cosy, welcoming pub.
We decided to eat out on a random Thursday in January, with our 4 year old. We therefore ate early, and the pub wasn’t very busy. However, the host was very welcoming and put the fire on in the restaurant just for us. She was very attentive and the food was delicious. I had the rabbit pie which was just fantastic, the addition of fennel seed on top added a lovely flavour and the rabbit was juicy, not dry. Accompanied by lovely gravy and perfectly cooked greens. My wife’s fish was also very good and tasted very fresh and light. We have frequented many times before for drinks but never for food, but we now look forward to exploring them menu and popping by for lunch. Overall, a delicious meal that was really cooked and clearly wasn’t run of the mill reheated food that so many pubs are serving up to save costs nowadays. We look forward to returning soon.

Amazing welcome, great food and wonderful service next to an open fire. So cosy. Definitely recommend.

Dinner last night, 9 of us and I cannot compliment this venue enough! The service was fabulous, such lovely friendly girls and nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb, very fresh, beautifully presented and beautifully cooked. Thank you to the staff...you made our Christmas meal very special.
Be the first to ReplyFlawless hospitality in the Cotswolds.
We have just stayed overnight at The Plough with 6 friends whilst walking the Thames Path. Roaring fires and a warm welcome, cosy and comfortable en-suite bathrooms and delicious food. Big shout out to the staff Olivia, Vincent and Janos for being the very best, you nailed hospitality! Nothing was too much trouble and it wasn't just us who were made to feel very much at home, our spaniel was given VIP treatment and was very sad to leave!! Looking forward to staying with you again next year.
Be the first to ReplyDissappointed!
I booked a night stay around a month ago and asked for a room with bath which confirmed. When we arrived, I have been told the room I booked wasn't available as the existing guests continued to stay in that room for the other night, therefore, the room I booked wasn't available for me when I arrived. The staff told me she teied to contact me around 5pm to inform me about this. Well, first impression wasn't impressed at all. The staff should have told me a day before I arrived or at least in the morning. If I had known this incident, I would have cancelled and asked for a full refund, also I stil have time to find somewhere else to stayas this wasn't my fault and it was a bit naughty of its managing. I'll not going back again.
Be the first to ReplyThe Plough Inn is excellent and truly dog friendly.
Spent a lovely night at the Plough Inn at Kelmscott. Delicious food, lovely room, comfortable bed, spotless bathroom with huge shower, and best of all everything worked properly. Breakfast menu was extensive and my full English was perfect. A beautiful inn in a really beautiful village and so peaceful I slept like a log. An absolute gem and truly dog friendly - the lovely staff made a huge fuss of my terrier so she had just as good a time as I did. Excellent place and terrific value. Will definitely stay there again.

A truly warm welcome awaited us here for lunch. Many thanks to our host who, I believe, was French. Menu selection was good although I found the faggots just too much. Not a reflection on quality, I just couldn’t finish both. The shared dessert (sticky toffee pudding) was the best I’ve ever had. Recommended.

We have visited The Plough many times and have always enjoyed our stay. Will made us especially welcome and he was very concerned to make our visit special. The food was excellent, including the delicious breakfast. Accommodation was very comfortable, clean and attention to the smallest detail was evident. Without exception all the staff were kind, polite and delightful. Look forward to our next visit. Peter and Ann
Be the first to ReplyNice but room for improvement!
First of all the staff are very friendly and helpful. Made to feel very welcome. The bar and dining room areas are cosy, the dining room in particular is lovely. The evening meal, whilst there wasn't a great deal of choice, was delicious, home cooked and very tasty. A cost of £10.90 for a large glass of standard white wine came as a bit of a shock though! Breakfast was delicious but a fixed price of £10.00 per person whether you just had a croissant or full cooked was too much for us. As I only have toast for breakfast, I was not prepared to pay £10.00 for this. The lovely rooms on the website photos belie a few problems; stains on the carpet (room 5) need attention. I'm glad I had my slippers. The spiders and cobwebs should have been seen and removed. There is nasty black mould in the shower ‐ tiles and shower hose. Water wasn't running away properly in the sink, when my partner removed the plug it was disgustingly covered with hair and gunge! Long black hair found on bathroom floor, my partner and I both have short grey hair. There is no dressing table but a bit of movement of wardrobe would allow for one, lots of hanging space in wardrobe, plenty of hangers but nowhere to put 'smalls' and non hanging items, kept in suitcase. Also nowhere to boil kettle except on the floor, therefore this is dangerous. TV remote needed a good clean. In summary, I would definitely go back and eat but improvements need to be made to stay there again.
Be the first to ReplyA Great Find !!
My wife and myself met a friend here for lunch, prior to visiting Kelmscott Manor and it was our first visit to the Plough. The exterior is typically attractive Cotswold stone, and once inside, the log fires made for a cosy environment, We had a simple meal, the girls starting with pumpkin soup, whilst I elected for chicken parfait. All good, but the highlight was cheeses souffle which we all ordered, pure delight This capped off by the pleasant surprise of the bill, just £60.20 !! Included a pint of Hogett bitter at £4.20, thought I'd gone back in time ! We will return again

We spent 1 night at The Plough Inn Kelmscott and absolutely loved it. Vincent and Will were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. The food was excellent as was the service provided by all of the team. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyNot good value
We went with friends for supper. The menu was small and became even smaller when we were told that two of the option were no longer available. We basically had a choice of a burger ,fish and chips or steak . The food was ok but but expensive. We will not be returning.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely rubbish celebration meal.
No. No. No. The Plough got this all wrong tonight. The service asking for drinks and food was too slow. The food delivery to our table was awful. One of our party had ordered a steak, which had obviously been forgotten and our server tried to cover up the gaff. 10 minutes after all other plates had been delivered, the forgotten steak arrived. Two of the six menu main dishes were not available “due to a busy lunch period”. Pathetic excuse for basic food management logistics. What was served was just average, just any pub grub. To finish.,, the coffee machine was broken. New owners? Who cares… won’t be going back. Waste of money and a waste of a celebration meal for our friend’s 50th.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect, actually
I discovered the Plough while walking the Thames Path. It was a scorching Lyn hot day and a sign pointed me to it, and I’m so glad I went. This is a place that clearly excels at all three things - pub, restaurant and hotel. The bar staff are genuinely jolly and hospitable; as soon as I arrived, weary and thirsty, I was told to take a seat and order whenever I was ready. I was so glad to stay for lunch, the cheese and chutney roll was excellent - it’s the measure of a place that it can make such a reliable snack just that little bit better than average. The place is beautifully maintained, the garden is lovely and happy, and the rooms look gorgeous; I will be returning and this time I’ll stay the night. Thank you for an outstanding effort.
Be the first to ReplyGreat hideaway in the Cotswold!
Great hideaway in the Cotswold. At first sight we were questioning ourselves why did we choose this? But it turned out into a very nice location, with great food, beers, a very nice room, a beautiful location and extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Vincent was our host and he was very genuine and friendly. We had a wonderful stay. The only drawback was that there was no dinner service on Monday/Tuesday, but this was compensated by great suggestions of our our host Vincent.

Perfect garden. Lots of shade on a hot day. Delicious food, sandwiches are superb Excellent service Could not be better
Be the first to ReplyExcellent lunch
Excellent customer service, polite and helpful staff. The best fish and chips ever! The batter is very light, tasty and not dripping in fat. The quantity of chips was sensible and the pea puree was lovely. More choice of draught beers would have been nice (only one available at the time, but others may be normally on tap) but the one we had was good.
Be the first to ReplyVillage pub at the end of a river walk
The food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient. The amazing thing was the quality of the wine list which was superb and sets the establishment apart from other village pubs.
