Nice location, starters were good
Nice location and good use of a building that looks like it was stores for goods that came in on boats. The service was mainly good and friendly except for one staff member who was trying to get bills done (or something) and completely ignored one customer and rushed around as if she was the only one getting stuff done. The starters and oysters were good, salmon ceviche, haddock scotch egg and very good calamari. We had an oyster each from a dish of three. Their own butters are very nice, the bread is a big portion and filling so we only had a small amount. The mains were good on the whole, one fish dish could have been warmer, the crab linguine was good and a dish of mussels in broth was tasty. I understand what other reviewers have meant about the sight of a climbing wall at the back (it leads up from downstairs which is a separate organisation). We went in the evening and downstairs was closed, so if you had a table at the back of the restaurant in the day I’m not sure if you’d suddenly see a climber out the back window?! A very few tables have a river view but most don’t. The decor is pleasant and fitting. Not sure about parking nearby as we walked, it looks limited. We’d definitely return and maybe go for a mix of smaller plates/ starters as we enjoyed them the most.
Be the first to ReplyTasty, professional, noisy
We enjoyed our food, recreation of a GBM 2024 from the excellent chef here. Service was prompt. Staff helpful, Wine list modest. Room was not very atmospheric and with little muffling was clattery and noisy. Recommended.
Be the first to ReplyIt just gets better every visit.
Having first visited when it opened, we have returned several times when in Looe and this trip was no exception. We took friends who had never been before & we were all stunned with the quality of the food. The signature Scotch egg fish is as beautiful as when we first had it & 2 of us opted for what could have been a boring fish & chips. But oh my word! It was the tastiest, best cooked. & juiciest fish I have tasted in a long time. My husband’s burger was magnificent- thick & meaty with plenty of relish & accompaniments. The crab linguine was also pronounced a deliciously delicate flavour. I would have loved to make it to the desserts but sadly had no room. We will be back in July so maybe then ?!
Be the first to ReplyWorth visiting the West Side!!
A simply superb restaurant! In all the years we’ve visited Looe we’ve never been over to the West side and we are glad we did! This is a top quality restaurant with quite simply superb food. I had one of the best starters I’ve had in years ( raw salmon - beautiful ) and my wife had a cod taco which again was superb - mine got the award though. We both had crab linguine for mains which was, frankly, the best crab linguine either of us had ever had - great quantity and a lovely mix of flavours and textures. Superb. We shared a pudding - Sheila’s delight which was not in the same league as the savoury but still lovely soft ice cream. Will be back. Ps the service was brilliant - I rarely tip but I did today.

We tried the Great British Menu with a couple of friends, of which we could not try the scallops, this made no difference at all the meal was lovely, service was very good, and thanks Ben and Charlie for coming out for a chat, great evening guys 👍

Scotch egg and squid pretty good, fish and chips terrible thick fatty orange batter, fish not good, should be fresh with light crispy batter. came here 12 months previous and we had much better quality meal we loved it. Don’t think we’ll return next year.front of house great people but the main just ruined the evening.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal with a view
Very enjoyable meal in a nice building and lovely setting and view. Very popular so would recommend booking. Service attentive and professional with good food and range on menu.
Be the first to ReplyPopular sea front restaurant which lives up to its reputation.
A really good restaurant which deserves its Bib Gourmand status. It's popular so you definitely should book in advance. It's very good value for money (but not cheap) and the menu reflects local food availability on a daily basis. As well as detailed dishes you can still get fish and chips or a burger if you need to satisfy someone in your group - but I urge you to be more adventurous!
Be the first to ReplyCracking lunch
Cracking lunch, starter of mussels and smoked haddock scotch egg, excellent. Mains of mackerel and fish of the day lemon sole, again excellent. Can’t find fault here. Service good, smiles all around.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelmed!
Underwhelmed!! I booked lunch with my mum as a treat. I had mentioned when I booked I’m lactose intolerant. I chose Garlic prawns on toast with prawn head mayonnaise, delicious!! When it arrived it was 5/6 prawns on a large piece of focaccia. It didn’t taste of garlic at all!! I asked the waitress what they had removed for the DFO? The answer was the garlic butter!!! And the prawn head mayo??? Mayo doesn’t have dairy so not sure why that was removed! I did ask if they could fry them in olive oil and garlic! They did that but still no mayo! The staff were great but just a bit disappointed. It seems a shame that the chefs don’t use a bit of initiative! Main was ok, nothing special! I have to be honest, as great as the premises and staff are, we ate at The Coddy Shack ( in Looe) earlier in the week and that was fabulous!!
Be the first to ReplyFront of house could be better
We booked for Ben's great British menu a month ago, we were seated and then unfortunately we were told it wasn't registered through the website, they acknowledged there was a booking problem but did nothing to resolve which created an atmosphere between us and the waitress which wasn't fair, we then decided to make the best of the evening as it was my birthday with no acknowledgement from the restaurant manager that there was a problem with the booking ,we then found out the table next to us also booked the menu but were also let down, who decided to leave. Upon payment we asked to speak to Ben who was more than accommodating and apologetic which could have been resolved with the front of staff at the time All I can say is the food is good but please be accommodating when a mistake is made. When in Looe will return for Ben's food but please organise the front of house
Be the first to ReplyOkay have had better locally
There are some good views of the harbour depending upon where you are seated. The menu is good and reflects local produce. I had the fish and chips. The haddock was slightly undercooked, the batter is quite heavy and the mushy peas are really not good. The service is friendly, but we had to keep asking for things. It needs to be more attentive and receptive. I had to ask for the bill repeatedly. It has a good ambiance. VAT is added to the price of food and drinks, which is rather naughty. So would I go back? Maybe, I’m not sure. If you want excellent fish and chips or seafood- go to the Coddy Shack or the Three Pilchards at Polerro, they are far better in quality and value

Aa pensioners mg wife and I don’t eat out very often but after watching Great British Menu we decided to splash out. What can I say? From the first course, the amazing Firefly with so many layers of flavour to the scallop starter, which I felt would be overpowered by Indian flavours, I was so wrong! The lamb? We both commented this was what lamb tasted like years ago Even the “simple” Affogato was a revelation. The food and the service were exceptional so why this place doesn’t have a full Michelin star I don’t know.
Be the first to ReplyWhen can we come back?
Having watched Great British Menu we really wanted to visit The Sardine Factory in our home county of Cornwall. Ben, Charlie and the team are running the 4 course menu showcased on the GBM and wow! I'm so pleased we caught this menu option because it was amazing. Firefly (the vegan starter) was so lovely, the sweetness of the beetroot, the balance of the whipped feta, black garlic ketchup and delicate pastry just got better with every bite. The subsequent courses also delivered superb flavours, the delicate spicing and warming curry flavours surrounding a perfectly cooked scallop was excellent, the lamb rump tasted as all lamb should from this point on, the briam of vegetables, the burnt aubergine puree...... all brilliant. Finally the ice cream, the nod to the Cornish cream tea was a great way to end this meal. Every mouthful delivered and gave us so much enjoyment. The setting is relaxed and a lovely place to be, the team are all really friendly and have a great balance of being attentive and leaving diners to enjoy the meal. Ben also came and spoke with us which was really kind and interesting to discuss the GBM experience. We toyed with the idea of trying to book for the same menu the following day because we would happily of gone through the same 4 courses again and again. Instead, we will be visiting Love and the Sardine Factory again, we will try and organise our next stay from a fleeting visit to a slightly longer stay so we can also try YAMAS, the sister restaurant just across the river. Go and visit the team at the Sardine Factory, you will not be disappointed. Thanks to all the team for a memorable evening, and see you again soon!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely lives up to expectation!
Booked for lunch here with friends as part of wife's birthday celebrations and it certainly lived up to the expectations that had been set as a result of Ben appearing on Great British Menu and Charlie on Masterchef. Lovely ambience, airy and chilled. We had a mixture of small plates to share tapas style, each and every dish was a delight, really flavoursome and each plate was empty. Service was excellent from the greeting on arrival to ordering and service itself. We will certainly be back with family and friends!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great views!
The Sardine Factory serves delicious food. The service is excellent and the views are marvellous! We’ve been here quite a few times since the SF opened and we’ve always had excellent food.
Be the first to ReplyFire fly
We visited the sardine factory last week for the Great British Menu four course meal. I have to say that it was outstanding from beginning to end. I can see why fire fly won the starter. It even came in the lantern. Ben Palmer is an outstanding and very talented chef. I’m sure that it won’t be the last we see of him on the tv
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding food and service
Just outstanding. We ate here on our first night in Looe and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The service was excellent - our daughter is coeliac and very anxious about contamination, but our host quickly put her at ease and we could very clearly hear the “gluten free..!” order confirmation from the open kitchen. When the food arrived it was excellent - fresh crab linguine with al dente pasta, Cornish mackerel, juicy mussels and a perfectly cooked steak. Combined with great service from a busy but responsive team it made for a wonderful experience - so lovely to meet head chef Charlie in person too! The strongest of recommendations from us - thank you and we’ll be back.

Be the first to ReplyFood good, service fail. Hopefully a one off blip
Second visit here after a wonderful first trip. The location is great in the old factory, views across the harbour. Nice walk along the quayside to arrive, nearly blown away on this rainy lunchtime. We were seated promptly at 12.30 and ordered 2 starters (sashimi salmon, fish tacos) both delicious, 5 mains (2 skate wing, 2 fish pie, children’s fish). The skate wing which I’d not tried before was good, very meaty, lots of it. But wish it could have been hotter, and in less butter. Vegetable sides were also not hot. Fish pies were meaty and enjoyed. Unfortunately after our starter we had to wait 90 mins for our main course. Our waiter hadn’t passed our order through to the kitchen, so we were left waiting for some time. I would have expected our waiter to have been checking on our behalf rather than me having to ask several times where lunch was. Our 2 80+ year old guests (who hadn’t enjoyed starters) were rather hangry at this point. Will come back as good fish restaurants are hard to find, I’ve put this down as a one off.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming experience
Expected more, under whelmed by the menu and standard of the food. Sent back first dish as it was cold, fried bread accompanied it was soaked in oil, sent that back. Food lacked seasoning, crab linguine couldn’t taste any crab. Fish was skate wing @£28, so more bones than fish. However the chilli squid starter was nice. Disappointing expensive evening. Won’t be returning.

Sublime. We’ve eaten at Sat Bains, Fallow and Alchemila (Nottm) and this is absolute stand out above! Loved every mouthful and perfect atmosphere and service. Very impressive.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best restaurant I have been to
Absolutely awesome food, service and wine. We literally enjoyed every mouthful of food. We had a window table that overlooks the harbour and the restaurant is beautifully decorated.
Be the first to ReplyGood but ...
Great food, lovely atmosphere, slightly marred by a forgetful/ neglectful waitress and an additional charge for 2 small slices of GF bread.
