I had an amazing time. This place is more beautiful than I remembered. Set up high in Montecito with almost an ocean view... maybe there is one but the lush plantings obscure it... you can imagine you're Oprah or Ellen nearby and think of how they live. Which is very well.
It would have been nice to dine indoors and the Stonehouse is world-class charming inside but during this most recent surge of Covid, I wouldn't. Fortunately, there is a LOT of outdoor dining space on two levels.
The host Kona was lovely and fun and really understood what I wanted out of a table, and the server Adam was adept, expert and lots of fun, too... all in the perfect amount of what you'd want from service in a fine resort dining experience like this. Never stuffy, just engaged and warm.
Now to the food. I loved my perfectly cooked and very retro Steak Diane, which comes with a healthy side of potato puree and lots of tasty green beans. My mom used to make Steak Diane years ago and no one will ever top her version, but this comes close. Adam flambeed it to perfection at the table. He is really talented at cooking table side, I must say. And it does make for a more special occasion when your entree starts off flaming.
I began dinner with the cucumber gazpacho... which unfortunately wasn't as successful and I like cucumber. It was tasty but quite watery... the consistency needs work. I finished the night with the mint ice cream Baked Alaska, which really didn't work and is my only real regret of the night. There are better desserts on the menu. The ice cream was really good but the flavor was too strongly minty and the combo with the meringue was odd. I kept burping it up all night, like I had just rinsed my mouth with really expensive, overpowering mouthwash. It really took over the meal that way. Oh well. I got over it.
The tortilla soup was a hit with my dining partner, as was his Jidori chicken. He really, really liked that chicken. No one usually likes chicken that much, but this was an exception. It's what most chickens aspire to be. As is this restaurant. I'm still on a high even a week later.
I will definitely come back (hopefully again and again). It's not cheap. but it is considerably less pricey than dining at the other 5-star hotel down the road on the water that shall remain nameless. Boy, that place was too much money plus they serve watered down drinks... maybe inspired by their watery location? Not the case here. Our martinis were great and just the right strength.
I also want to mention the rest of the staff I encountered on the premises (lobby, valet and entrance)... all were friendly and nice. That matters a lot when it comes to the overall experience. And what an experience this was.
