Pretty disappointed really , very small portions.£50 per person for starters and main plus wine . Wouldn’t rush 2 go bac
6 of us £300 for starters , main and one dessert plus booze Very disappointed to be honest I had squid / calamari, the coating was a bit squishy , and the portion size was very small , maybe 6 or 7 pretty thin slices . Steak and ale pie , looked impressive but didn’t go overboard on flavour, Mackerel pate , again very small portions , I think those who know mackerel is very cheap to buy . The fish with the fish and chips looked impressive but I think it was mainly batter. Would I go again ? Probably not to be honest .
Be the first to ReplyFish pie was delicious😍
We came here for the first time whilst visiting the town of Petersfield and really pleased we did. The food was so yummy, in particular the fish pie - real comfort food. The service was OK, I found the waitress to be quite cold considering my partner had let them know it was my birthday. Apart from that, an enjoyable visit !
Be the first to ReplyLovely mothers day lunch
We had a lovely lunch for mothers day. The pub was really busy which is always a good sign and service was quick and friendly. The roast pork was very good and the carrot and orange soup was delicious and original. The only thing id note down is that our food arrived in five minutes of ordering and so wasn’t that hot.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing lunchtime visit
My wife and I booked for lunchtime on the 9th March. We had been before with our family last summer and had enjoyed ourselves so were looking forward to it. Unfortunately it proved to be a disappointment. I ordered the haddock and chips and my wife had the smoked mackerel pate. The food was delivered within a few minutes. I was surprised by this however the pub had very few customers so I presumed the kitchen was quiet. The batter on the fish was crisp however the fish inside was small/thin and appeared to be a tail end of haddock. So not exactly good value given the price (£17.50). I scrapped out the fish and left most of the batter. I wasn't asked if we enjoyed our food so decided to bail out and skip the dessert. There are a lot of competition in the area so I'm not sure we would risk another visit in the future.
Be the first to ReplyNever know what the food will be like
This is a local pub and I just wish that they would secure a reliable, trained cook/chef. Every time we visit we hold our breath as to what the food will be like. Please heed the local comments. You could be so much busier as there is nowhere else to go but we are put off by the lacklustre food.
Be the first to Reply“The best beef burger I’ve ever had!”
My husband ordered the beef burger and he said he hasn’t tasted anything as good anywhere else, and he’s had a few burgers!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed
Majority of service was pleasant however one server had not received training and seemed out of their depth which felt rather awkward as they were clearly uncomfortable serving. Food incredibly overpriced and inadequate and served mains served with no cutlery after starters were cleared. The bread and olive nibbles also came at the same time as the starters. Salad with the steak (pictured) was at least 2 days past it’s best. Asked for the skin on fries and received the undercooked ones pictured. Photos of desserts speak for themselves. Smaller one was “mini dessert and coffee” but was just the regular brownie cut in half - would be fine if the chefs had some consideration for presentation. Coffees presented with two lumps of white sugar on the saucer - a jar with choice would have been nice (also felt a bit unhygienic). No gluten free options stated on menu, despite noting on the booking. Overpriced.
Be the first to ReplyNice - but could be better
A group of 9 of us went for Sunday lunch, we had booked a good 3 weeks in advance and were asked to come at 1.30pm, I presume to ensure the kitchen had enough time between the first sittings to cater for a larger group. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We all ordered roast dinners, I ordered the pork belly with crackling, others the beef, chicken, vege wellington and lamb shank. My pork belly came out and there was no crackling, it was soft and floppy so I asked if they could change it for one with crackling or if they couldn't to beef. When my plate came back it had beef on and I was told none of the pork belly had crackling. Shame but the beef looked good. It was also a shame that they didn't replate my meal as my gravy was cold by the time I got my plate back. The vegetables were all a disappointment. Undercooked parsnip and carrot (one slice of both only) what I can only describe as thick cauliflower soup which was the caulflower cheese and a small bowl of red cabbage that was placed on the table which I think they expected to be shared with the 9 of us. I had three roast potatoes, one was almost raw, the other two soft enough to eat but none of them, nor on any other plate, were cooked to a crunchy outside, fully inside. My husbands were burnt on one side only. The beef, whilst tasty was extremely difficult to cut. I think a combination of tough beef and blunt cutlery didn't help. It was quite the workout just to get some meat and I ended up tearing it most of the time rather than cutting it as it was the only way I could get to it. Portion size for the meat was huge but it was a good job as getting through the fat and gristle meant a good lot of it was moved to one side. We ordered two sides of pigs in blankets which were so anaemic one of the guests thought they were pickled onions! Gravy was very tasty. Dessert I chose was brownie with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. It was really good, I did wonder if the chef mixed up the melon baller and the ice cream scoop as the scoops were particularly small. Even those who ordered ice cream only got really small scoops. All in all, the majority of people around the table, especially those who ordered the vege wellington, chicken or the lamb shank, thoroughly enjoyed their food, I think we were just unlucky with the pork and beef.

Visited for lunch with friends. Food excellent as always. Top quality meat. Two of us had duck which was served nicely pink. One fish pie and one huge pork chop. Found space for puddings and liqueur coffees. Service welcoming and attentive. I just wish we lived nearer as 30 minute drive away. Previous visits were a group of 12 for Sunday lunch and steak meal with friends. Each time all food top quality. Can't wait to come back.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely superb!
Seven of us met for a family meal. Great round table, which is always great for a group. Seated and served politely and promptly. Starters of scallops, terrine, sausages….all delicious. Mains of beef, burger, pork and fish pie, fabulous. Mini puds with coffee, baked Alaska, ice cream, brownie…. all great. Couldn’t fault a single dish nor the service. Superb!
Be the first to ReplyChristmas stay
My family stayed a couple of nights over Christmas and hosted a Boxing Day lunch for 13 people - all in the Thomas Lord. We were very well looked after. Even hot croissants brought to our room on Christmas morning. Comfortable. Very jolly, seasonal atmosphere. Great meal on Boxing Day. Lovey, helpful staff.

Wonderful food, an excellent wine list and great service….a brilliant birthday experience in a beautiful setting. Thank You.

We enjoyed a lovely meal whilst sitting outside in the beer garden with our dogs. Very friendly staff and excellent food.
Be the first to ReplyVery mixed experience
Guy on the bar who served me was charming and friendly. We ate in the garden. Starters arrived swiftly. Very underwhelming crispy squid (good thing mum went to Iceland type stuff) which was expensive for 6 rings out the freezer. Aioli wasn’t aioli. Lovely sounding vegetarian scotch egg was under seasoned and boring. Mains all very nice - steak over seasoned this time - but everything took forever and we had to check if they had forgotten us. Steak sauce ordered was béarnaise, but what arrived was not so we sent it back. It came back the same with the explanation that it was made on the premises and was actually béarnaise even if it didn’t taste like it! Pretty much had to then self serve and clear to get deserts. Staff seemed very relaxed given entire garden has tables full of dirty plates and glasses. Not the best £140 I’ve ever spent.

We had a very uninspiring experience at Hinton Ampner house and gardens so searched around for a pub on our way home. We pulled into the car park of The Thomas Lord and I checked Trip Advisor and there were a lot of “excellents” and not too many “terribles”. I had the mussels and my wife the haddock fish cakes with poached egg and broccoli. She said one fish cake had more fish than the other proving they were made in the kitchen(!). My mussels were excellent coming with a lot of herbs and onion pieces. Good chips made from new potatoes too. The broth was delicious. We finished with a mini desert which consisted of truffles with the coffee - very indulgent. I had a glass of Sauvignon (a bit expensive) and my wife orange and lemonade. We also had a carafe of water. The service from the manager was first class and the music through the speakers in the “library” room was turned down at our request - we had the room to ourselves. The bill came to £54.94
Be the first to ReplyGood food & great service
We were staying in the area & having done a bit of research, chose this pub for an evening meal. The waitress who looked after us was fab, I’m annoyed that I can’t remember her name! The food was good & we would recommend if in the area.

Quaint setting for a pub/restaurant. I visited with a group of friends at the weekend for the first time and will be back. Meal was great. First rate service from Martha, who looked after us on the day, smiley, helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. Very generous portions of food and a varied menu choice to cater for all preferences. Very relaxed atmosphere and perfect balance of service and hospitality from staff which enabled us to enjoy each other’s company whilst there. Enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you to all.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Customer Service
I booked a table for Sunday 10th July in the evening a while ago for my Husbands birthday as he is a cricket fan. I was aware that the booking T&Cs stated tables could not be held after 10-15 minutes. We arrived 4-5 minutes late after our booking time of 18.45 as it took us slightly longer to drive than we expected (45 minutes). As we arrived we apologised we were a few minutes late and were greeted with a very curt manager informing us they were shutting in 5 minutes due to staff training and we'd better order pretty quickly. A little taken aback we sat down and started looking at the menu. Within a few seconds, the curt manager returned and demanded we order immediately. At this point we explained when I had made the booking no-one had mentioned they were shutting for staff training, and there were no announcements on their website or any signs in the pub, and we had come a long way for a celebratory meal. After no signs of remorse we decided we would not order and left. We are thoroughly disappointed as we had booked in advance and were looking forward to this meal. It is certainly clear they need staff training on customer service! Very poor form!

Family meal as would have been my Dad's birthday today. Service was great( apart from forgetting to cone back to get a dessert order) Selection of food on offer was varied and came out promptly after we had ordered it. Well presented gave me gravy was I requested this part way through the meal. Generally a lovely relaxed environment Thank you
Be the first to ReplyThe most unfriendly pub ever
Stopped for an evening meal, while traveling. Note that I am white, was clean, dressed in business casual attire, and speak perfect English having been born in the UK. I was directed to a table immediately beside the front door and ordered tacos, having eventually gained the attention of the staff who were engaged in long conversations behind the bar. Tacos arrived, and were banged on the table without a word. Nobody asked if my meal was good. I felt totally unwelcome, unlike other incoming guests who were greeted warmly. Not a word was directed to me. I paid my bill and left, without ordering dessert. Clearly, outsiders are shunned here. Be advised !
Be the first to ReplyAbout as bad as it gets.
Poor Ingredients, cooked badly, served after a long wait by rude staff in a dirty environment for too much money. I'm guessing either management or ownership has changed as it seems it used to be good. Definitely not so anymore. One to avoid.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t bother!
We visited the Thomas Lord today for my husband’s birthday. The serving staff were unfriendly and we felt uncomfortable. We had to wait so long to even be given a menu that we nearly left without ordering; I only wish we had! Unfortunately the food was poor, my husband had a paper thin steak which cost £26, and I had cod and chips which was just a plate of tasteless fried batter. We were very disappointed we did not enjoy our visit and felt ripped off as it was so expensive for the poor quality. We would not go back or recommend it to anyone else.
Be the first to ReplyA thank you from our puppy’s
Very nice pub in a lovely area. Food was very nice and drinks wise there was a lot variety including a cocktail menu. Highlight was the incredibly nice staff that were accommodating and were very nice towards our spaniel and sausage dog puppy’s. Will be coming back again and would highly recommend
Be the first to ReplyPerfect Sunday Pub
Lovely setting. Booked for Sunday lunch and the food was great, perfect sized portion and service was good.
Was initially nervous booking here when looking at recent reviews but I must say we did not have an experience that relates and we were delighted.
Night away
Stayed in one of the garden cabins, lovely accommodation. Ensuite with toiletries, individual cabins to the side of the pub garden. Cosy chairs and table inside for reading by the patio doors, each cabin has its own outside furniture as well for sunnier weather. Good breakfast menu, friendly helpful staff. We ate an evening meal as well, small menu but good food.
Ideal location for walking, did a 9 mile circular walk up to Old Winchester Hill from the village
