Wanted to check this place out after it was hyped up on
Wanted to check this place out after it was hyped up on TikTok. I went on a Sunday afternoon solo and was quickly seated at the bar! This place does get crowded so reservations are recommended. Unlike other ramen places, Tonchin does not add all of the toppings in their ramen (which I do prefer as I don't like unnecessary add-ons to ramen). They don't have woodear or bean sprouts in their Tonkotsu ramen which I appreciate. Their Tokyo Tonkotsu ramen includes chasiu, bamboo shoots, egg, green onions?, and seaweed, which is a perfect amount for me. They added a ton of noodles, so the portion was pretty good. The noodles were chewy, but the broth was a bit too salty for my liking. It became a bit overwhelming towards the end. However, I didn't know you could ask for a less salty broth, which I would do the next time I come back. The broth was still flavorful though! Their egg is partially hard boiled and they added a good amount of meat as well. I want to try their smoked dashi broth next time
My best advice is to make your reservation early and go go
My best advice is to make your reservation early and go go go!!! the restaurant is pretty small, but that adds to the intimacy of the experience. I followed other recommendations and ordered the wings for an appetizer. I wish I had a picture - we started eating the wings and inhaled them and totally forgot to take a picture. In any case, definitely order the wings. We also ordered noodle bowls. After that, we ordered what the server recommended for dessert, which was a banana dessert and the Matcha ice. Both were a great way to end this meal. Overall, this was a wonderful dinner, and I highly recommend Tonchin.

The chachu rice ball, roasted chashu pork, and the egg in the Raman are the only things that's yummy. The soup and the noodles are disappointing. I'll give a 6/10 for our first time trying. Service and ambiance are good, though.

The taste and service is good overall, but -1 star for the ramen soup being too salty, -1 star for the insufficient amount of clam in the ramen
Best ramen I have had in ages, particularly the broth.
They forgot the egg in my ramen but it was good enough that I didn't even care. The food came out quite quickly and the portions and flavors on the onigiri appetizers were great. I had both the unagi and pork onigiri and they were rolled instead of like a ball and delicious. I didn't try the dessert so I can't comment, but I would highly recommend this place if you are craving ramen.
It was deliciously made.
It had so much flavor and it did not weight me down like other ramen. It was light and delicious. The cucumbers were delicious as well. It was a little over priced for only 6 pieces that were cut thin. The wings were good as well. It was flavorful and had the right amount of salt and spiciness. The unagi rice ball was not it. Definitely pass on that.
Every single dish was amazing ! Tremendous depths of flavor
Every single dish was amazing ! Tremendous depths of flavor in each dish , with great presentation ! Definitely the best ramen I have ever had . The Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because we felt slightly rushed . But we will definitely be back . Staff was excellent as well
Excellent
Amazing dinning experience. The Classic Ramen was best we’ve ever had, and the Gyoza delicious. It was elevated dining, but not too much so for our kids who are old enough to sit mostly still. The service was excellent, we’d definitely go again. Not a cheap, or quick family meal though.
What can be said that hasn't been already? Tonchin is
What can be said that hasn't been already? Tonchin is incredibly delicious ramen in a wonderful atmosphere with great staff. The broth was rich and flavorful and characteristic of many of my favorite ramen experiences in Japan. The noodles were thick, chewy and satisfying. Even the bathroom at the restaurant was inviting and smelled good lol! I will definitely be returning.
Hosted a large group for my wife's birthday.
The staff was unfriendly and just not accommodating. I felt like I was burdening them when ordering. I tried to order a cocktail they have listed with less sugar than they usually put and the waitress responded with a sort of angry tone that they can't customize anything for me. The staff also likes to grab cocktail glasses that still had some drink left without asking if we were done. I tried the wings which were pretty good but lacked any sort of dipping component that would have made them way better. Maybe a spicy mayo, vinegar garlic, or even something like a sweet chili oil. Without that they were a bit too dry. The ramen was great though. They only have a tiny bathroom that is for both men and women. There was always a line for the bathroom and people in line had no choice but to hover over and around our table. At the conclusion of dinner I had a friend give out little candies as gifts she got on a trip to our friends. The waitress jumped toward us with a raised voice and said. "No outside food allowed!" We were all surprised. They also charge a $5 fee per person if you wanna bring a birthday cake which I agreed to pay in the beginning privately with her and explained its a surprise. Suddenly at the end of dinner instead of bringing the cake out she went up to our table and publicly asked if everyone is ok paying $5 each for the cake. My surprise was totally blown. We decided to not bring the cake out because of the rudeness and ate the cake at a different restaurant completely. Overall my experience at Tonchin NY was a let down due to the unwelcoming staff. Its so unfortunate because the place had high expectations. Its really not worth the hype. There are other ramen spots that are much better.
5 Stars from The Ramen Lover
Absolutely loved it. Noodle, soup - real authentic Japanese ramen. I’m a big fan of ramen needle and have had many in Japan, too. Finally found one I like in NYC. Side dishes are great. The modern decor with Japanese twist. I wish the server was a bit more friendly. Over all, Ton him is a must visit place. Can’t wait to go back!
Tonchin
Picked this restaurant as my Sunday Stroll last week for my upcoming novel "Table for One." That's a joke yelp please don't take my elite status away for self-promotion. Well let's call it a half joke. Anyways, this place is IDEAL for solo dining. I have high standards for ramen as I have had a plethora of it when I was galavanting in Japan... yeah I'm like that. I make the walk from the Wayland in Alphabet City (review coming soon), and I walk in and ask if they have any availability for 1 and they said there is room at the bar. Perfect. I sit down and have a digital menu which is the norm now, although I miss physical menus with all of my soul. The bartender was inviting and welcoming, and with his help I decided to order the Shrimp Tempura hand roll and the Tonkotsu Ramen. I was debating getting a drink as the vibes were UP, but mid-day on a Sunday I just couldn't pull the trigger. The tempura handroll came first and was a nice appetizer for the ramen after I just banked like 4,500 steps to get to Midtown. The ramen came next and the broth was absolutely perfect, and really helped the violent hangover I had from the night before due to all that mezcal. Overall, Tonchin absolutely blew me away. I really thought no ramen in NYC could touch Ichiran, but we may have found its match. The Thor to Ichiran's Loki. The Frazier to Ichiran's Ali. The Roark to... ahahah jk I'm done with those. Love Speech! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
A delightful meal!
We didn’t have reservations but hoped to get in on a Thursday night - two of us. Offered two at the bar or a long wait, we took the former. It did not disappoint, and we’d happily return despite the bar stools being very tight to the bar. Service was very attentive and the food was excellent with the exception of the edamame, which was a tad soggy. The other dishes were exceptional.
Good ramen with a side of stylish interior
This place has been on my radar for some "ramen in NYC" exploits after reading all the reviews and the "best ramen in town" lists where it is prominently featured. All in all, a solid experience although my personal ramen hit list is safe (for now). Word of caution, the entrance to this place is very inconspicuous, took a few walks up and down the street to see the discreet door :D Look for the Jerusalem cafe as your landmark and then a bit to the side of it. Inside, it is a cool industrial/minimalistic vibe, which I absolutely loved. The front of the house folks are mostly friendly and accommodating. As for the food, both my daughter and I went for the classic ramen: the tonkotsu pork broth and the roasted pork were absolutely delicious. The noodles were fine, I wish they had options to choose from though. What was a bit of a let-down was the [absence] of spice: we both had to ask for extra chili oil as ramen was missing any kick at all. Makes me wonder if the chili just somehow missed our bowls on the way to the table... All in all, I would probably go back to taste other items on the menu as they seem to have a few big hits. But would go to Ramen Danbo for my "noodle soup fix".
Yummy Asian place
Awesome Asian fusion place. Great ramen. Must have the chicken Tsukune buns, the maguro (either, but we love the classic) the chicken wings with curry and cheese, and the cold chicken mazemen noodles. The shave ice dessert is a house specialty: the coffee one tastes like tiramisu. Yum!
