The Art Menu
I have several of Rick Baylessโs cookbooks and have wanted to have a topolobampo dinner. This one was titled โ The Art Menuโ. As dinners arrived, they took us table wise [ we were two] to the bar area of the restaurant for a pause for drinks and appetizers. This interlude allowed us relax and the staff to tune with the kitchen. A little later, we were guided to our table. The service and plating of the six courses was outstanding. We also enjoyed the wine pairing. The total experience of flavors, textures , menu tie in to art on the walls and service level was worth the price. Rick was on the floor during or meal.

Just an amazing establishment. Every dish on the tasting menu was delicious. The rooms are great with a lot of unique art pieces. Great dinner.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular privite event
This might possibly be one of the best dinning experiences I have ever had. It's definitely top 10. It competes with an experience I had in Paris at a tiny restaurant where the chef lived upstairs and cooked personal meals for a small customer base each night. We rented out the library at Topolobampo which is Rick Bayless's private test kitchen. All of his private books and recipes are in that room. The only rule of the night was "do not touch." A personal chef with two sous cooked a seven course meal in front of us. The mirror angled over the kitchen allowed us to watch the magic. A host explained what we were watching and then what we were about to taste. The chef would explain each course and link it to Rick Bayless's wishes and expectation. Just spectacular. I tasted fantastic foods paired with great wine and spirits.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience
Upon entering, we were greeted and led to the Topolo part of the building. We sat at a small table at which we could have ordered drinks but decided that since we had ordered a pairing with our meal, we should pace ourselves so didn't order anything. However, the chef brought out some small amuse bouche items that were extremely tasty and were a great precursor to our meal. We were then led to our table. We reserved the Greetings from Chiapas prix fixe and found it very inventive, complex, and delicious, and each course was quite different from the others. Our servers were extremely helpful, especially since we had ordered the Agave + Wine pairing and a few of the agave's were mezcal, with which we had no experience. Our server gave us excellent information and helped us understand the origins and differences among the various drinks. The agave and wine selections went very well with the courses and some must have been very hard to pair. The overall experience was wonderful with one exception. The music was relatively loud so we had trouble hearing exactly what the server was telling us when describing the food. We had to ask for clarification several times since this information is very interesting to us.
Be the first to ReplyYou should be Ashamed Rick Bayless - $75 in fees on top of $170 lunch menu
was going to be in town, and attempted to make a reservation. its like going to disneyland. they keep offering excessively priced items , and when you ready to pay, they want an additional $70 in fees. and it all must be prepaid !!! Shameless Rick Bayless, truly shameless.
Be the first to ReplyWay overpriced and under-performing
This is part of the Rick Bayless group of restaurants and considered his high end. Greeting and seating was done well. Service was very good but the food itself was overpriced and underwhelming. Every dish looked and often tasted the same. I have eaten Mexican food throughout Mexico and the southwest including Mexico City. This food wasnโt it. At minimum of $155 per person plus drinks, is extremely expensive and his place next door was less than half the price. We did not enjoy the meal and will not return.
Be the first to ReplyAn Amazing Culinary Tour of Puebla
We try to visit one of Chef Rickโs restaurants every time we revisit my home town of Chicago. This past evening we had an interesting and delicious Taste of Puebla dinner at Topolobampo. Your staff was excellent and Victor was exceptional. The dishes were amazing, and let us experience some flavors and chiles/spices we had never had before. We enjoyed this culinary tour through history and the Puebla region.
Be the first to ReplySexual Harassment
I was quite excited for this experience with high hopes that were unfortunately dismissed by unacceptable service. The small and personal atmosphere was enjoyable. The courses were well paired with the โWhat is Artโ menu. The date I was with informed me that the waiter, Fernando, was increasingly hitting on her throughout the night and was making her uncomfortable. I wasnโt aware as it was in Spanish. Once told, I tried to engage with the waiter more but was not responded too. When going to the restroom he gave her his number (pictured) and stated โI would like to see you again. It is a shame that an otherwise great night was ruined by him. It doesnโt matter how great everything else was if one doesnโt feel safe in the environment. Will not be returning nor recommending. Shocked a Michelin star restaurant embodies sexual harassment. I informed the restaurant and was refunded the gratuity and told they will tell him that it was unacceptable. To these readers, it is up to you to decide how to interpret this experience and the restaurantโs effort to mitigate.
Be the first to ReplyWell worth the trip
Excellent meal created and served by a very talented staff.
The courses were timed perfectly and tasted superb. I did find the truffle (part of the soup course) was superfluous and would have been better incorporated in a course where they could shine. The soup (like all the courses) was first rate.
Thank you for a wonderful evening. Michelin was smart giving you a star!
AMAZING! Thank you Rick Bayless and Tompolobampo Staff
This was a great experience. We travelled here from Canada to celebrate my 50th birthday. What an experience. First off, my husband (who booked the trip to surprise me) told them it was my 50th. Rick Bayless personally signed a menu for me to commemorate my trip. THANK YOU! It was a lovely surprise and I will treasure it.
The food was excellent! I do not typically eat gluten. I am not celiac but gluten sensitive. My husband notified the restaurant when making the reservation. They amended the menu to meet my needs. This was going above board and quite unexpected. Again, THANK YOU! I was able to enjoy all of the courses.
From start to finish this menu hit the mark. The crispy smoked short rib course was amazing. So good! And the cod course....WOW! That is one of the best things I've ever tasted. Lovely! Truly lovely!
While we were in Chicago for three days we ate at all three of the restaurants in that area of town. I highly encourage you to check out Xoco and Frontera - two of Rick Bayless's other restaurants. They were also exceptional.
Thank you Topolobampo staff for making this a birthday to remember!
Sublime!
My wife and I did the tasting menu in late February of this year. Two people. Once arriving at the restaurant you are ushered to a private elevator to a second-floor private function area. The tasting menu is not conducted in the normal restaurant.
The first room, a large corner room with high ceilings , big windows and fun artwork and music was overlooking Clark Street. Here we enjoyed wonderful appetizers such as tortilla soup, Oysters with some spice and empanada and wine.
We then were escorted to the library, another private dining area which includes a small kitchen where the chefs prepared the food before us. The dining area seated 14 total and once again social distancing was practiced. The service was perfect. The food, many courses, is is presented alone or optionally paired with wine or tequila, was simply outstanding. Not enough adjectives can be used to describe the quality , flavors and creativity and preparation. It was simply one of the top five meals
My wife and I have ever enjoyed. The volume of food by the end was good as well and they were sensitive to dietary restrictions.
Chef Bayless even made a surprise appearance and stopped at every table to chat and take pictures when desired.
My wife and I will do this again in a heartbeat when we get back to Chicago once the menu changes. What a special night!
Pandemic Dining - Excellent 5-Course Take Home Tasting Menu
Looking to celebrate a special occasion but we're deep into January and there's only outdoor dining at restaurants. The solution was Rick Bayless's 5-course "Topolobampo at Home" menu. The menu rotates. When we ordered, it consisted of a plantain empanada amuse bouche, yellowtail kampacha & citrus ceviche, polenta tamale with pistchio pippian, ribeye steak with black mole, and passion fruit & white chocolate cajeta. There was no problem in getting them to swap out the steak for chicken for one member of our group who doesn't eat red meat.
This is not a take-out meal where you simply open the containers & start eating. There are detailed written instructions for reheating the items to be served warm, as well as plating for each individual course, plus a link to an online video of Bayless demonstrating the plating. Those instructions were very good.
Given the prep work involved and that the meal is best consumed as 5 sequential, separately plated courses, this is not an option for visitors staying in hotels (or even in short-term rentals unless the kitchen is reasonably well-equipped with a decent variety & quantity of dishes and eating utensils.)
But for those of us stuck at home who want an upscale meal that approximates the fine-dining of one of Chicago's best restaurants, this is a great option. There's even a Spotify playlist available if you want background music.
Fantastic, Personalized Service
Meagan and her team provided outstanding, personalized service from start to finish. The tasting menu was full of flavor and presented perfectly. Due to COVID, the setting was in The Library, an intimate space upstairs with an open kitchen. The overall experience was excellent.

Awesome food, fresh ingredients great service. Ive been to Mexico several times and I love the food , I did not know that the restaurant took his name from a town on the sea of cortez.
Food in baja is amazing and Rick make this freshness of flavors happen up-north in Chicago.
a Must try is the Duck Mole , and for the sweat tooth, crepas cajeta .
Great experience and excellent food.
Great experience. The menu was very interesting and the service flawless. All the dishes were a delight to the palate and the eyes. Their duck was on the raw side, though. Apart from that, all the rest was cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the dinner watching how they were preparing the dishes, quite an experience. I would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Staff and Food
We celebrated our first date here 21 years ago on February 13. It is even better now. We did the Winter Beach Getaway tasting menu with the wine pairings. The dishes were all memorable but these stand out the most.
Amuse Bouche was really an entire course with a spoon of jicama, cucumber and tequila infused pineapple on a mango puree and a shot glass of wonderful soup with toasted pine nuts. Then a sushi course with yellowtail and geoduck clams with little spirals of cucumber. The pheasant and octopus courses were incredible. The yellow mole "flan" with poached lobster, uni and charred fennel and mushrooms was memorable. Chef Meagan O'Connor taught us how to cure egg yolks. Thanks to Patricia for the great recommendations and excellent service. Vanessa, the manager was a pleasure to talk to, Highly recommended if you are not on a budget.
Nothing great about this place
After reading the reviews I had to try this place out! I was highly disappointed with the wait time in-between plates, and the plates of food were tasteless in my opinion.

Really enjoyed the creative tasting menu at this classic Chicago restaurant - best Mexican meal Iโve had!
