I had seen this place as a new restaruant and had been wanting to try this place. I came here with two of girl friends for one of their birthdays and it was a great experience!! We got the pre-fixed menu and it is an amazing deal and great bang for your buck. It came with 1 appetizer, three pastas, and a dessert!! We had so much leftover we all took almost a whole portion home. The cacio-pepe was SOO good! It wasnt your usual c&p but had a nice kick!! We also got the beet ravioli which was also a hit!! The third pasta dish was a mushroom pastina and that was great as well! It was all high quality fresh pasta and the flavors went so well together!! I have been wanting to come back with my husband for a date night and constantly rave about this place.
Be the first to ReplyOverall 3-3.
5 stars. Food: we got 2 pasta dishes and 2 hot apps. Chicken: left something to be desired. Not dry, but was served with a verde which didn't match the flavor. Broccoli rabe: fried and crunchy, it was flavorful and we enjoyed this. Buttery mushroom pastina: the mushrooms were great, creamy dish with a melting Brie type cheese in the center which was unique. Tagliatelle ragu: our favorite one of the two pasta dishes, red sauce based but we were disappointed in the lack of meat chunks. Service: excellent. Polite and quick, attentive. No complaints. Ambience: sitting at the kitchen was the best, watching the cooks is always a unique experience. They serve wines, beers and liquors from PA only which is unique. A small selection of wines. Overall a good experience, but nothing was so outstanding that I need to go back. If asked to go, I would join a friend.

Great little spot in Fishtown! We came here to celebrate my birthday, as we have walked by it many times and I've been wanting to try it. I would definitely advise making a reservation. We were seated in the back room (which we didn't know they had) next to the window! It was very intimate and a perfect spot for a date night. The server was wonderful and walked us through the menu. We decided to do the $55 tasting menu per person which included 2 appetizers, 3 pastas, and 2 desserts. For the appetizers, we got the fried cauliflower and the polenta hush puppy. The cauliflower was the highlight! The pecorino cheese sauce it came with was to die for. For the pastas, we got the ricotta gnocchi, beef agnolotti, and duck fat carbonara. All were great, with the gnocchi being both of our fav! And lastly for dessert, we had the ricotta fritters and casaba cake! The fritters were the better of the two in my opinion, but the cake was still good. The only aspect of the meal that wasn't my favorite was the wine. They partner with a local vineyard, and the red wine we had just wasn't for us so we will probably drink a cocktail or bring wine next time! But overall would definitely recommend and will be back!

Great pasta and great wine! This restaurant is a Fishtown must try! Highly recommend making reservations beforehand.
Be the first to ReplyService is a 5, food a 4.
We did the tasting menu and it was absolutely worth it - SO much food. The mushroom pastini was our favorite. Our server Valerie was one of the best servers we've had in Philly. Shoutout to her.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect for a girl's night out or date.
HOWEVER, it is not the most intimate setting depending on where you're sitting. The tables were far too close together to other groups to the point where i actually requested to be seated in a somewhat secluded spot by a window. I give them five stars because they were accommodating with this request. The food was also delicious! I had the Cacio de Pepperoncini and we also ordered their focaccia. I enjoyed both. The portions are pretty big, so i ended up taking a lot of the pepperoncini home.
Be the first to ReplyGreat for a romantic date, or a night out with friends.
The menu is thoughtful and expertly prepared. It can be a bit loud, depending on where you sit, but the overall experience is worth it.
Be the first to ReplyThe octopus ink pasta is really good.
I love how it's sour and savory. The bread with honey butter is super delicious. I love it
Be the first to ReplyThe homemade pasta is amazing! I went here with a friend
The homemade pasta is amazing! I went here with a friend and they offer an option it's $55 a person and you get two appetizers three pastas and two desserts, a few of other reviews mentioned that the portions are a little on the smaller side, this price seemed fair to me for the amount of food we got we have leftovers of each of the pastas and the desserts that we were able to take home! The yucca app was both of our favorite app and then the cacio e pepperoncini our fav pasta. It's like a fresh take on cacio e Pepe but instead of ground black pepper it's like fresh peppers made into the sauce! I will definitely be back, if you go try to go with someone who will share the tasting menu with you, it's totally worth it!
Be the first to ReplyWhat a nice cozy place for food! We got their tasting menu
What a nice cozy place for food! We got their tasting menu which they were offering for $55 a person for 2 appetizers, 3 pastas, and 2 desserts. It was a loooot of food but we got to take some home thankfully. For apps: we got the focaccia and the chicken skewers. Both were good! The focaccia was like a giant round salt roll which was quite fluffy and warm. It wasn't like the flat rectangular dimply bread that I was used to but it was still quite good. It was a very large piece so we were already getting full from the apps For pasta: these change seasonally but we got the squid ink linguine, the crab ravioli, and the lamb meatball spaghetti. My favorite was the crab ravioli which had toasted pumpkin/pepita seeds on top. For desserts: we had the chocolate polenta cakes which were very rich and delicious! I was super full at this point and wish I had more room to eat the dessert. It tasted like a brownie but better. The service was also very good!
Be the first to ReplyThe pasta is shockingly bad for a "pasta" bar.
The cacio e pepe was an abomination that tasted like mac n cheese. The pappardelle was over cooked to near mush. The only redeeming quality was the human robot beer and focaccia
Be the first to ReplyI really loved this place.
we sat at the chef's counter and got to watch them cook. food was great. will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyWe really wanted to love this place.
The experience we odd overall. To start we ordered the stracciatella which should be the easiest thing to get right, but they still missed. There wasn't nearly enough for the amount of focaccia you receive. The cacio e pepperoncini had very little flavor. We didn't even finish it because it really just was blah. It looks great but flavor wasn't there. The crab ravioli was the best thing we ordered but again, I wouldn't be running back for it. The pasta itself on the ravioli was thin and impressive but the flavors were very confusing together. Overall, this place has potential because it's adorable but they need to take some feedback and change some things around on the menu. For how hard it was to get a reservation, I expected this to be in my top favorite restaurants in Philly but I won't be returning any time soon unfortunately.
Be the first to ReplyStart with the fact that this part of Fishtown has zero
Start with the fact that this part of Fishtown has zero parking, so you need to park on the sidewalk in front of someone's home, and then walk several blocks to the restaurant. The restaurant has a strange layout. The tables are small and placed too close together, and the chairs are flimsy and uncomfortable. This is all before you get to the food! The few drinks are bizarre. The negroni was an undrinkable concoction that tasted of cinnemon, and had no relationship to a real negroni. I found it undrinkable. The beers are all local, and your best choice. I did not try the wines, as they were from Pennsylvania, and I never found a local wine I could like. The food had some interesting characteristics. The stracciatelli soft cheese appetizer was fine, and the heated sweet roll accompanyment was a nice touch. The broccoli rabe was excellent and well charred, only the portion was half the size it should have been. And then came the pastas! The fresh pastas were excellent, with a firm bite and good texture. It was a great start, until the chef decided to get "creative" and try to best traditional sauces by creating inedible renditions of good dishes. The caccio y pepperoni (?) was so over cheesed with a very strong cheese, that it had no other flavor, and there was zero heat from the pepper. The tagliatelle with lamb ragu had excellent pasta, ruined by overcooked ragu and was swimming in too much oil and butter. The black squid pasta was beautiful tiny round black pasta with a few flakes of fish, but the flavor was repulsive. I had one bite and had to call it quits. The chef has an arrogance and a mistaken belief that he can produce a better dish than the Italians have been doing for 100 years, and in the process he produces inedible concoctions from his clearly limited understanding of pasta sauces. I cannot understand how the owners could let him have free range to produce his own inventions that contradict basic culinary combinations. Of the four people at our table, it was unanimous that none of us would return.
Be the first to ReplyWe had the best meal EVER at Tulip Pasta & Wine Bar.
Our group of six tried just about everything on the menu and it was all fabulous. The small plate pastas are not that small and all are original and well conceived. The varieties of pasta were all tender and delicious. Who knew that everyone would love Charcoal roasted beet ravioli?? The menu changes every so often, so I can't wait to go back and try whatever is new!
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it
I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it didn't wow me. Reservations are really hard to get. It's a small (but very cute) place, but all the tables are super close together. We started with the house made stracciatella and focaccia, which was definitely the best part of the whole meal. We also tried the mushroom arancini and cauliflower. The cauliflower comes in a cheese wiz sauce, which was too overpowering and dense. I would have preferred the cauliflower as is, as it was perfectly cooked. The appetizers were better than any of the pastas we had, which is not a great sign when your restaurant is a pasta and wine bar. We got the cacio e peperoncini, gnudi, and squid ink pasta & calamari. We unfortunately thought the squid ink pasta was not edible and didn't touch it. The other two were awesome though! Perfectly seasoned and not too heavy. I don't think you can call this place a wine bar given the liquor license they have. I typically expect wine bars to have wines from multiple wineries, but it looks like this place had a partnership with one PA winery. I do think this is worth coming to, but don't think it's worth the hype it's been getting.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely will be back.
The focaccia was to die for. The fried cauliflower was delicious, and the pastas were sizable portions with great flavor. Service was also great, very attentive and friendly. Yes, a small menu and wine list but I think it's just right for a place of their size. If you can snag a reservation, totally worth it.
Be the first to ReplyI love the simplicity of Tulip.
From the menu, to the service and decor. The hits were the pasta that was prepared perfectly. We had the cacio e peperoncini and the special tagliatelle bolognese, both were delicious. The roasted cauliflower with truffle oil was well seasoned and the truffle was not overpowering. The ricotta fritters were a great end to the meal and were reminiscent of beignets. The misses with the exception of the Riesling, was the alcohol. My old fashioned was way overly sweet and would have still been even with half sweetness. The red blend was awful. I was hoping that it would open up a bit as we got through our mains, but sadly got worse. The tuna crudo was just okay and seemed like it was just on the edge of getting binned. We will definitely return and stick to what Tulip does exceptionally well.
Be the first to Replymy boyfriend and I went last night for dinner, and I'm sad
my boyfriend and I went last night for dinner, and I'm sad to say it was probably one of the least favorite restaurants we can recently think of. the crab ravioli was the only thing that tasted good, even though for $30 you get what seemed to be a kids version. the linguine and calamari .. I'm still looking for the calamari. my boyfriend got a dish with pork and 2 other things .. we're still looking for the pork. We just didn't think it tasted good at all. the service is the only good thing I can say, fortunately enough. For the prices and location I hope they find a way to switch things up to last. it's a nice edition but wasn't up to its expectations at all.
Be the first to ReplyA few days later but better late than never.
I give this restaurant a 2 because the highlight of the meal was the focaccia and grilled chicken skewers NOT the pasta the pasta itself was well done but the sauce was not. And the wine was absolutely the worse wine I've ever tasted and apparently my option of that was viewed as negative versus hey what didn't you like about that? As a business owner own up to the good, bad and ugly don't tell your patrons they're negative because they didn't like your bad wine.
