It was a great experience dining there.
Food was excellent! I wish we had the "Fourteenth Generation Sake" (Not sold in US). It would be the perfect pairing for me.

This is absolutely the best sushi restaurant around! Everything is so fresh, each bite is like a dream! They also have the BEST selection of sakes you will ever see! Chef Hiro-San chooses the BEST ingredients and puts a great deal of care into each dish. Each time I go is a memorable experience.

I've been dreaming about eating Urasawa's food for over a decade. Â Then came coronavirus, and a perfect opportunity arose. Â Urasawa's offering bento boxes, which are substantially more affordable than eating-in. Â Price was $220. Â It was easy to call the restaurant and reserve a meal for take-out. Â There was very little traffic, and street parking was easy to find. Â I called the restaurant, and a few moments later, the chef walked over carrying a tray with this beautiful cloth-wrapped bento box. Â Inside the bento box, there were real ceramics. The bento box did not come with a written description of the items, but I will try my best.Beef roll: slightly sweet. Â There was a pleasant contrast between the slight chew of the beef and a crunchy vegetable inside.Ginger shoot: crunchy, refreshing for palate.Bean: a cute crisp green bean.Scallop: firm and sweetTako: chewy in a good "Q" way. Â Not rubbery.Shrimp: so beautiful, toothsome.Gari: yellow, not pink Smoked fish: I think it was smoked fish. Â Wrapped around a crunchy vegetable.Squash: I think there was a squash piece. Â Waxy texture in a good way.Mushroom: sweetSnappea: good crunchTaro: sweet and smoothChestnut: very sweet. Â It didn't dust or fall apart.Daikon: soft and juicyCarrot: it tasted like a carrotGobo: simmered. Â Earthy, sweet, and fibrous.Abalone: good crunch and chew. Â Not rubbery at all.Chawanmushi: smooth texture.Caviar: I think there was caviar. Â Was I supposed to eat it alone?Sushi rice Pickles: I saw daikon, renkon, cucumber, eggplant.Chirashi: a believe this is a chirashi rice. Â There were bits of unagi, uni, ikura, tamago, and a crunchy green vegetable. Â Lovely. Â Huge portion. Â Strawberry: a beautiful strawberryShisho leaf wrapped around something sweet: I think there was a bit of sweet orange inside?Ume: sweet and firmStrongly recommend Urasawa.
Be the first to ReplyGood food with high quality ingredients.
However, the Chef was very arrogant, he might piss off customers and he said he doesn't care what people say online about him. I was asking him questions about the ingredients politely, he thought I knew nothing and mocked me in Japanese, sadly, I do understand some Japanese and had lots of experiences with Japanese cuisine in all different forms. Went to lots of fine dining restaurants including top sushi, kaiseki and kappo restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto who do way better than Urasawa and serve fantastic food, but not a single chef can reach how arrogant urasawa is. No photos allowed. Price starting at 600 per person exclude beverages, taxes and tips.Went to Masa in NYC, definitely better than this since Urasawa was taught by Masa, and the price was about the same, but Masa is a Michelin 3 star while urasawa only has 2 stars. If people are happy to pay the overly high price and take the risk of being treated as an idiot, you should go to Urasawa, otherwise, save your money and go somewhere else. The dishes are nothing creative, simply throwing a whole bunch of expensive ingredients at you, foie gras, caviar, uni, etc. Boring. I'm pretty sure except a few regular customers who go often and spend lots of money drinking there, Urasawa looks down on all other customers.
Be the first to ReplyWe ordered 2 bento boxes.
It was the best take out food we have ever had. Yes, it's by far the most expensive bento box you'll ever eat, but where else would you be able to get a $200 bento box full of the best tasting selections from a 2 Michelin Star restaurant? It was totally worth the price and we can't wait till Urasawa reopens so we can dine there for the full experience.

Take-out due to the safer-at-home update:Obviously not the full experience. And a great deal cheaper (something like 1/3rd the price?), but don't misunderstand-- this is still a very pricey meal. Even with the admittedly very reasonable delivery fee, by the time you pay tax and tip... this is by far the most eye-wateringly expensive takeout I've ever done. The service and presentation are exquisite. Presented with old school formality, wooden tray and everything. And instead of a bag and cardboard box, it's layers of cloth and a real bento box, complete with glass and ceramic containers inside, including a chopstick holder and spoon. The let down is the food. It's a packed box, loaded with tasty noms, including caviar, a single delectable cooked shrimp, and a variety of fresh and tasty dessert items. However, much of the rest of the meal doesn't mean the elevated expectations, set either by reputation, by Michelin rating, or by price. Even the combination of uni, ikura, tamago over rice... it's good, but not the level of epic noms you expect.

Came here today with my husband to celebrate our 8 yr anniversary. Chef Hiro-San always provides the best service and the most high end best of the best dishes. Every ingredient is carefully selected, the rice is the best rice you can buy imported from Japan; best in the world!!!! It is a special order and cannot be purchased eslewhere, the ikura is prepared in such a way that it takes two days, has its own special made from scratch broth, and even sous-vide for a day. Imagine that, I never knew you could have ikura so clean and tasteful. The hairy crab we had sitting on a coal pot was decadent, rich with flavors, and full of details that I can't even begin to explain. We even had Miyazaki sliced beef Shabu that was dipped in a thick/ full uni broth. Tell me where in the United States can you have a Japanese meal this amazing and rich? Absolutely nowhere! ONLY Hiro-San at Urasawa can imagine such a dish. The toro was amazing, the top grade you could possibly get in the market, the caviar with gold, was over the top, and there were the perfect vegetables that were each delicately prepared with each its own distinct flavors. Imagine having a snow pea (or maybe a green vegetable) that's perfectly cooked with a hint of smokiness or a very delicate smoked fish wrapped around a slice of nagaimo yam.... it's unimaginable what this flavor can create in your mouth!!!What Hiro dreams for the sushi dishes he creates, is something you can't imagine. The complex combination of each dish, the intention he puts in for every bite you take, as he calls it the "perfect balance" can leave you humble. I don't know about what other critics might have to say but Hiro-San is the last true chef of our genre who's an owner chef At Urasawa. Nowadays, those fancy chefs don't even bother cooking in their own restaurants. Tonight's dinner was wonderful in every way and Hiro-San is still the fun and strict chef we met years ago. We enjoyed his creation, cheered to sake together, truly made merry  and celebrated not only our anniversary but Hiro-sans amazing dishes. If you get a chance to come  here, remember to offer Hiro-san a cheers  because he treats his guest with care but will treat you better when you've shared a drink together. We love Urasawa and know that there's no one left to take his mantle ten years from now but that just means we gotta come more often before he retires. Thank you so much for a once in a lifetime meal!!!

One of a kind Japanese in Los Angeles -- feels like you are in Ginza, Tokyo. Â Hiro San is keeping Masa's old place alive and this is a must visit if you are coming to Los Angeles and want to experience some of the best dining Los Angeles has. Â I go here every time I am in LA.

Finally made it to Urasawa & "wow" is my only word I can use to properly describe our dining experience! Â Be ready to spend a legit amount of money for this meal, $600 per person + tax, tip, & alcohol, but it's an exquisite adventure definitely worth going to venture at least once. Â Â It will definitely set you back some, but a worth while adventure in my opinion if your up for it.Overall Rating: Â A++++
