Vetri Cucina is THE outpost of "Alta Cucina" in Philadelphia. I like the old town house in which it is located, with five or six steps leading up from the sidewalk to the front door. The signage is discreet. When I put in the address of the restaurant into my phone, the area came up as "Gayborhood". However, I do not have any information one way or the other on that designation since I was just visiting from California and it was my first visit to Philadelphia. I had booked my table a month in advance with Grace, and when I entered, Grace was at the door to greet me. There was about a ten to fifteen minute wait for our table at a little wooden bench in the narrow reception, which was understandable, since the dinner reservations were for 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday night. I like the collection of small Murano glass vases positioned on a side table opposite the bench. At one point as were waiting, more and more people began to enter the restaurant. However, Grace had disappeared upstairs for some time, so that created an awkward standing around in the small reception by a number of new arrivals, since the little bench was fully occupied. When Grace came back downstairs, a young male/female couple came into the restaurant in jeans and inquired of her if there were a bar in the restaurant at which they could have dessert. [Note: Vetri Cucina is prix-fixe only, $155.00 per person, plus supplements, and they have no bar]. I was very curious how Grace would respond to their inquiry. Specifically, I recalled a prior Yelp review in which a man stated he had walked in freezing weather from his hotel to Vetri Cucina to request food to go, and he claimed Grace was "mean" to him when she refused to offer the ability to obtain a to-go meal. I am pleased to report that Grace handled the encounter with the couple very well. After telling them that it was not possible to have dessert only, she asked them if they would like recommendations for other places in the area which might better meet their needs. When they answered in the affirmative, Grace provided them with detailed information on the names and locations of other bars and restaurants in the area where they might enjoy the desired dessert. Thereafter, we were seated at a large round table in the downstairs dining room, as I had requested. It should be noted that the upstairs dining room is equally beautiful, and I especially love the bright red Murano glass chandelier twinkling overheard in the upstairs room. Our server was Danielle, and she was processional and welcoming. She explained the options on the complex four-course prix-fixe menu with clarity. In addition to the four course, we selected an add-on supplement of house-cured Prosciutto and Speck, sliced in the dining room right near our table. As to the wine, even though we ordered a grand Barolo, the sommelier lacked personality and warmth in its presentation. . He also disappeared after the initial pour and we never saw him again. When I inquired of that fact to Danielle, she commented he "must have been upstairs", as she smilingly poured our wine in place of the missing-in-action sommelier.
