A long standing favourite.
We were in the area and were ready for lunch, what better place than the tried and trusted Vini da Gigio? All the usual attributes were in evidence. Warm welcome, excellent service, traditional menu and a truly excellent wine list. One of the special starters of the day was soft-shelled crabs, which were a must for two of our group. I always order this when available, as it is totally awesome but on this occasion I went with the grilled octopus (it seemed a bit over-the-top for three of the four to go with crab). The crab was excellent but sadly, the octopus less so. Grilled to be sure and lots of it but it would have benefitted from being removed from the grill a little sooner as it was way too charred (for my tastes). All the other fish and pasta main courses were good, as was my Venetian liver. Coffee and grappa finished the meal and service - as always - was great. Even if you exclude my โburntโ octopus, the meal didnโt reach the extremely high standards we have experienced here in the past. Saying that, we still ate very well - but we have eaten better at this historic and well established restaurant. It did seem less crowded than usual. I would still recommend Vini da Gigio if you are looking for a true Venetian eating experience but you can get more innovative and exciting food elsewhere.
Be the first to Replythe MOECHE are VENICE
we are in Venice, time of the moeche, the crabs which in this period lose their armor and are soft, must be eaten fried and whole but must be very fresh. they recommended this restaurant to us as it often has them, we asked and we went there. excellent in taste. a nice, well-kept place with friendly and professional service. they should be tried once in your life, even if they are a little expensive
Be the first to ReplyTasty, but such impersonal service!
On our third day in Venice we chose this restaurant based on the good reviews it received. The food itself was not too bad, but unfortunately the quality of the food paled due to the terribly impersonal service of the waiter we had. The man in question barely said a word, treated us like tourist number 1001 and hardly a word of hospitality came from his mouth. The highlight even came when he came to clear the plates of the main course and did not ask at all if it had been tasty. He had almost left the table when he suddenly realized that as a matter of routine he should ask if he liked it. He also had no say in the choice of wine. He didn't say a word when I asked him if the wine chosen would go with the dishes. Seriously, that man shouldn't be working in a restaurant! As mentioned, the quality of the food was not too bad, although my wife was not very satisfied with the pasta with crab about the dryness of the pasta and the many remains of the crab shell that were in between. Despite the many good reviews, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant. We have found better hidden gems in Venice where people were much friendlier, the quality was better and the price was also cheaper,

No need to make a special trip, though worth it, as we were staying minutes from here. They did us our first evening meal in Venice and another later in our stay. The person serving us welcomed us back. The food and service were good as remembered. The food was well presented and you are always guaranteed well cooked and well presented food. Prices reflect the quality of the food and the service. Not somewhere to eat every night but starters around โฌ20 and mains around โฌ30 is more than reasonable. There are two sittings 1900 and 2130. Definitely book for earlier in the evening - it was full when we ate early on arrival and when we walked past. If you book and canโt make it or your plans change do let them know. Give someone else a chance the may not have had to eat there and support a local business.

Small place discovered by chance, but where I will gladly return. Small but well-kept place with a canal view. Varied and abundant fish starter, like the first courses, which left me and my friends more than satisfied! Even the desserts were above expectations! Friendly, helpful and very kind staff. Price proportionate to the offer. Highly recommended!

Be the first to ReplyThe perfect truly Venetian dinner
We chose this restaurant for our anniversary and never was a more appropriate choice! Very fresh fish, impeccable and extremely balanced traditional Venetian dishes. Although the place is not very large, we felt pampered without indiscretion and spent a very pleasant and romantic evening. We will be back for sure! The first courses, plentiful and well-designed, and the desserts, which are the perfect final treat to end such a dinner, are highly recommended.

We were craving a traditional place with traditional food and were very happy to have chosen Vini da Gigio. Great food, friendly service. Average price for Venice.
Be the first to ReplyFor many but not for everyone
So I'll start by saying that it's not a cheap place and it's within everyone's reach, especially if you're not a teetotaler. The restaurant is historic and you can see and hear it when you walk through the front door. The owners (I think father and son were present) do not exude sympathy from all their pores but I cannot say that I perceived any rudeness on their part. The wine and spirit list is important as is the cost to access it. The dishes indicated on the menu are verbally communicated to other dishes of the day with their often more expensive prices. For what we ate I cannot say that I found an adequate quality/price ratio, especially regarding the starter. The first ones are good but not enough to leave you with an indelible memory. I can't say I'll go back next time.
Be the first to ReplyI don't know
Good place, good welcome. The quality/price ratio is not convincing especially the mixed fried food with vegetables, better defined as calamari and prawns, traces of vegetables and fish at 26 euros, not at all I would say an insult to the customer. I don't think it matters to the manager. Much better elsewhere in Venice.
Be the first to ReplyThird time and still good
This was our third time at this restaurant over a 5 year period and it didnโt disappoint. A really well run family restaurant with excellent fish specials, good service and reasonable prices. We have always found it consistently good and would come back for a fourth time.
Be the first to ReplyTreat with real Italian food
I made reservation for lunch. It was easy to do it on their website. The restaurant is along the water. It seems small, but once I got inside, I was surprised how spacious it was. I saw the menu, and I wanted to order โtagliolini com granseolaโ, but they didnโt have it. The waiter suggested spaghetti al nero di seppiaโ because it is the local dish of Venice. I had it with a glass of Amanero. The noodle was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was excellent. It went well with Amanero. I had tiramisu for dessert. It was beautifully done. It seemed that there were regular customers when I went, so I think it is authentic Italian restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyA slick, highly professionally run restaurant. An authentic taste of old Venice.
To call Vini da Gigio a relaxed, unpretentious family run restaurant, would be to do it a disservice. It's a slick, highly professionally run operation. The food is authentic Venetian fare, all prepared in a galley kitchen visible from the restaurant. We had spider crab, artichokes and grilled eel, for example. The wine list is incredibly comprehensive, and obviously cellared off-site given the numbers of times the sommelier disappears out the front door only to return with a bottle. Highly recommended.

Wonderful restaurant. Delicious food, impeccable service, comfortable atmosphere radiating care and love. The short menu and 'specials' are interesting and not available everywhere. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent in all respects
We had visited this restaurant on many occasions pre-pandemic. I was concerned, reading reviews, that the restaurant had gone down hill post-pandemic. However we were delighted with our experience. The published menu is shorter than it used to be. However our waiter reeled off a long series of daily specials that were also available - presumably based on what was available that day in the market . (I suspect this explains why one of the reviewers noted that other people were eating things that were not on the menu.) My wife had duck pasta and I had crab pasta. Mine was very tasty - although the duck pasta was even better. We, then, both had monkfish (one of the specials) together with a caponata and polenta - which was absolutely delicious. We then finished off with a millefoglie and pannacotta. The service was very friendly and prompt. We will definitely go again when we next visit Venice. Peter
Be the first to ReplySpoiled holiday.
Is it recommended by the Michelin guide? You are sure? Very tasteless food. Pasta with vongole, there are so few of them that you can't find them. There's too little vangole here. 20 euros is too expensive for such bad pasta. Fish with vegetables without taste and overcooked vegetables. Only the lemonade was delicious, but that's not the chef's job. My husband and I celebrated my birthday here. Spoiled holiday.
Be the first to ReplyVery poor
We were recommended by a friend and this gets good reviews but our experience was very disappointing. We had mussels- not cleaned properly and the stock was poor - the crab pasta had shell in it and whilst I like and understand al dente that is not an excuse for undercooked. The wine was ok at best. The staff were clearly not at all bothered when asked if we liked the food that we were disappointed. We have had very good food in Venice so donโt believe what you read but give this a miss.
Be the first to ReplyOur best family dinner in Venice - excellent quality food, service and wine list.
Visited for dinner and enjoyed the experience, service levels and food quality/wine list so much that we returned again the next evening. Warm, welcoming and buzzy atmosphere with a focus on local produce and with a really extensive and well curated wine list. Pasta dishes cooked very well and crab dishes particularly excellent. Wine list caters to all tastes and price ranges and was very well recommended by Decanter.
Be the first to ReplyA treat
Am sitting here in the restaurant as I write this review and I have had such a lovely evening. The food was delicious. Grilled octopus, followed by a seafood cabonara and a hazelnut chocolate parfait, all accompanied by a really good wine, . I had no reservation but even now that the place is filling up I do not feel like I am being rushed out the door. The staff are lovely, the surroundings are very comfortable, even the music is great and to top it all the food is amazing.
Be the first to ReplyTraditional venetian dishes with charme
DA GIGIO mixes up local traditional recipies with a slight personal touch that makes them perfect.
Locals gather here for their sunday lunch/dinner with their families and now I know why.
The venetian antipasti are simply perfect (both raw fish and warm appetizers), so are the home made desserts.
"Primi piatti" are good too.
The location is set up in an hystorical building as typical "taverna" with wooden furniture and small rooms (definitely too crowded on sundays). The windows over the canal are adorable.
Personal and warm service.
Hidden Gem in Venice
Always a treat to dine here while in Venice. Wine is also amazing and the service by the owners welcoming and warm. Reserve in advance!
