Terrible service
We came to enjoy some izakaya fare and drinks. The food was good and so were the drinks. The service was definitely not friendly or respectful though. We agreed when we visited we would be done by a certain time. The waitress kept coming by our table and checking her watch impatiently. Clearly trying to make us uncomfortable or make us leave quicker. Never mind that we’re spending $200 in a meat stick restaurant and ordered quality sake. We had an agreed time to leave and were happy to be done by then but it was super rude yo. Anyway, we closed on time like I knew we would. There was no reason to make the last half hour totally uncomfortable and to just drag the check out like that. If it was up to me they’d get no tip. Terrible service! Do not recommend. I would not return.

One the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a long time Tried to write a feedback letter and was completely snubbed by management and the GM Save your money This place is not what it used to be Go to kokoro The leadership team at this place is non existent and do not care about your experience
Be the first to Replyenjoyable meal for the most part
enjoyed most of our meal here on our visit. stylish light filled space. very attentive service but a bit lacking in knowledge when asked about items. menu full of japanese style tapas and yakitori-grilled meat or vegetables on skewers. it was our plan to choose a selection of the yakitori for a varied meal before a movie. decide we better include some vegetables to offset the meaty options. started with edamame, a old favorite. unfortunately these were undercooked and much too salty for our taste. not very enjoyable. nest, a couple of grilled skewers of zucchini and of grape tomatoes. the zuke was barely hot and needed more grill time. the tomatoes had a nice blister on them. also a sprinkle of basil and were nice and sweet. followed with an order of oyster mushrooms dressed with soy and butter. again, these were undercooked and very woody. like chewing bark. unpleasant. the portions on these were quite small, just 3 pieces on the toms and 2 on the zuke. moving on to the proteins, simple choices were our pleasure tonight. picks were chicken thigh with teriyaki, pork with a simple sprinkle of sea salt and pepper, and beef with teriyaki and garlic. all three arrived sizzling and fragrant. each one had distinct flavor profiles. better than most. moist meat, grilled perfectly. the beef especially was quite flavorful with the garlic. after enjoying these, due to the small portions, we went another round on the three meats. i also decided to order the takoyaki-deep fried octopus balls. the skewers came quickly but takoyaki takes time and i ended up having to cancel this due to our evening plans. the staff was very understanding on my problem. our meal was good enough to visit again, ordering some different items since there were many others that sounded enticing. recommended.
Be the first to ReplyCharcoal has never smell this great!
Full marks for the atmosphere, charcoal grill chefs, service, and quality of food. The only problem is parking. We usually arrive at a very early time. However, if parking is not available when we arrive late, we park across the street at the meters.
There are lots of choices on Main, but this place keeps us coming back for the same reason: great staffs and great food.
If I had to choose my last meal, this would be it!
Everything is absolutely delicious. Wonderful service. Feels like you're in Japan. The decor is so welcoming, comfortable, and intimate. I'm going to make this place our date place.
Be the first to ReplyUh oh...
I really hope Zakkushi will work on providing better service because I love the food here. I used to eat here very often but due to the service recently friends have been recommending other places. Last week I celebrated my birthday here with a big group and OMG they messed up and gave us someone else’s cake!! Being the birthday girl I thought that was my cake (because a friend brought it) but then after we finished half of the cake the waiter came and asked if he can take away the rest of our cake and give it back to another table!!! We ended up having cakes from the same bakery but different flavours. The other table ended up with our cake and they noticed the difference. It was so embarrassing and ruined my birthday :( we ended up leaving the other table with some cash to “buy their cake” and then I took a whole cake (my original cake) and half of someone else’s cake home. A story to remember. This would never happen at another restaurant. The staff at Zakkushi didn’t say too much to help with the situation.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service and mediocre food
I’ve been to the other Zakkushi in Downtown vancouver and this one is by far the worst. The service was slow, rude, and deceptive. The first round was a bit slow and the food was at best warm, not hot. We did not order much for the first round since the tables were very small.
When the second round was ordered, it did not arrive after thirty minutes (nothing fancy just the Zakkushi set and premium set, one each). We followed up, and was assured by the manager it would be five minutes to ten minutes. The excuse was that many customers just came in and they had to serve them food first, not the best reason, but at the same time there weren’t many customers actually coming through the door.
After another ten minutes, still no food despite other tables around us receiving food. Followed up again and was simply dismissed with “wait a few minutes”. It feels as if the restaurant was creating a situation where the customers would give up waiting and simply leave, so they can get the table back.
We left and ate somewhere else.
Would not recommend.
Great Izakaya for grilled food
We visit here every time we come to Vancouver. We saw that they had taken away the walls to make the Great food selection and the service was great, especially if you like charcoal grilled skewers. They did not have ASAHI super dry which surprised us.
Parking is rare but there is a small paid parking lot at the back, and occasionally you might find street parking on Main St.
Japanese Meat, Seafood, Veggies and Starch on-a-Stick, done right.
We have been going to all locations of Zakkushi for years. Starting at the original (now closed) on West 4th, moving on to Denman St, but now go to the one on Main Street. Funky, cool, beautiful, it could use a little more cleaning and the decor is looking tired. But who cares when the food and booze is so good! You must try the Sweet Potato Sochu Vodka on-the-rocks and as many different skewers as you possible put in your cake hole. Standouts are the Mochi with Bacon (grilled, puffed glutinous rice with American Cheese and Bacon, could have easily just eaten those all night. But there is so much more. Pork Cheeks, Tender Beef Steak, Pork Belly, Sea Food, & Veggies. For the more adventurous connoisseur you must try the Chicken Livers and the Chicken Hearts, just delicious! The is always a special sheet with Sushi & Sashimi, Salads and Appetizers and always a dessert special.
Be the first to ReplyBest Izakaya in Vancouver
After returning from our trip to Japan, I was starting to wonder if I would find an izakaya in Vancouver that I really enjoyed (not a big fan of Hapa Izakaya). I decided it was about time we visited Zakkushi as I had heard some pretty good things about them.
This place only opens for dinner service and it was fairly busy when we arrived on a Monday night. The menu is a bit daunting given all of the different choices so we just wound up ordering a bunch of items. As this is an izakaya, they have a fairly good selection of drinks to choose from as well. My personal favourite was the Pure Blue ($5.80) made with Bols blue curaçao, lychee liqueur, Calpico, and soda. The Lychee Orange ($4.80) made with lychee liqueur and orange juice was pretty good too.
First up was the Goma-ae ($3.80) of boiled spinach with sesame sauce, Kurage ($4.50) jellyfish with imitation shark fin in sesame oil sauce, and the Tsukemono ($4) Japanese quick-pickled cucumber.
Next up was the Age Mochi ($5.20) or deep-fried sticky rice with sweet soy sauce. If you’re a fan of the chewy texture of mochi, you’ll really enjoy this dish.
Zakkushi is known for their skewers and we still had fond memories of the grilled seafood that we had in Japan so we ordered the Giant Scallop ($9.80 per skewer) with soy sauce and butter as well as the Garlic Prawns ($3.20 per skewer) with garlic butter. The scallops lived up to their price point (on a side note, I was pleased that they were served whole with the orange coral part intact).
The Zakkushi Set ($10 each) is probably the best deal as it’s slightly cheaper than ordering the skewers individually. You get the Momo Teriyaki (chicken thigh), Umeshiso Yaki (chicken thigh with sour plum and Japanese basil), Me Maki (garlic stubs wrapped with pork), P-Toro (crunchy and juicy pork), and the Oropon Beef (served with grated daikon and ponzo sauce).
These skewers were amazing. It’s difficult to pick out a favourite but I did really enjoy the Me Maki.
We figured that we needed something a bit more substantial so we also ordered the Mentai Kimchi Yakiudon ($9.50) which is pan-fried udon noodles with spicy cod roe and kimchi. Very toothsome noodles here with a slight kick.
Their Appetizer Sashimi Platter was beautiful ($14.30) and we wound up ordering 2 servings of this. It comes with albacore tuna, sockeye salmon, yellowtail, and spot prawn. Everything was super fresh.
Another filling dish was the Negi P-Toro Don ($10) which comes with the same crunchy and juicy pork toro that you can get in the skewers along with a soft-boiled egg, green onions, onion sauce, and nori seaweed on steamed rice. Simply delicious!
We wound up ordering a few other items to round out our meal including the thinly sliced, tender Beef Tataki ($8.90).
The Duck Breast skewers ($4.30 per skewer) with yuzu citrus chili was fairly solid. They really know how to do skewers here.
We added a couple of orders of Yakioni ($2 each for butter shoyu or regular shoyu) – these grilled rice balls (or should I call them triangles?) had a super crunchy exterior and I thought the butter shoyu had the better flavour.
We’re almost at the end… we had some surprisingly good chicken meatball skewers in Japan so we ordered the Tsukune ($2.20). It actually tastes better than it sounds.
The Takoyaki ($4.90), or deep-fried octopus dumplings with sweet sauce and bonito flakes, were a bit on the small side and didn’t have a lot of octopus inside but they were pretty good.
Last up was the Karaage ($5.80). For the price, there was actually a rather large portion of deep-fried chicken thighs. More importantly, they were quite tasty. The exterior had a nice thin crust which encased the moist chicken thigh meat on the inside.
We were super stuffed by the time we left Zakkushi (something which doesn’t always happen at other izakayas) and the food, though a bit pricey, was top notch.
Order with care, some food burnt:(
Quite an informal environment with a large variety of traditional Japanese cuisine. It is easy to order something which you may not really want because items include liver, heart, regular meat, sushimi and more. This time we noticed that some of our food was actually over-cooked/burnt (eg rice balls, and teriyaki chicken); the cheese topping also tasted awkward. Rest of the food was as amazing as always .... a must try place.
Be the first to Replybirthday dinner oishi
Went on a Saturday night to celebrate my birthday. Have seen Samurai Gourmet on Netflix and got interested in Oden, and this was the only place in Vancouver that offered it. Zakkushi's Oden was soon good. Doesn't seem like it was cooked in broth for longer time, but it was still good. "Oishi" i kept on saying. Also had a few yakitoris. they were so good! My favourite is the chicken liver. My not so favourite was the sardines - it was so so salty! (And they are quite expensive.)
Ambience was nice. I particularly like the rustic Japanese feel, and the Japanese music thats neither old nor pop. It was good. Better be there early as the place is not that big, and it gets busy really fast!
I will definitely come back and next time I will just indulge in Oden!
